Police Chief Scott Anderson of Deerwood City and his assistant Wallace Shane are waiting for the 2:11 AM train. It arrives on time, and a man named Lester Furman gets off. He is quickly grabbed and taken to the police station. They show him the circular regarding him that was sent out by the Trans-American Detective Agency. It offered a 1500 dollar reward for the arrest and conviction of Lester Furman, wanted for the murder of Paul Dunlap in Philadelphia. Furman vehemently denies the charges, and says that someone is trying to frame him. The next morning, Furman is found dead, hanging in his jail cell of an apparent suicide.
