Suspense - Alibi

Mark has decided that he has no other choice. His business partner, Hannigan, must be eliminated. He was given a phone number of a man named "Barney" who could do the job. Mark called him and was given the address of a small grocery store. He went to the address and found a grimy storefront between a press-while-you-wait tailor shop and a fly infested fruit store. He walked in, noticing the dust covered stock of tobacco and candy that would not have tempted anyone. Mark said to himself "Not much chance of customers disturbing you here". He walked to the clerk and says "I need to see Barney. I phoned him and he gave me this address." The clerk points him to a backroom. Mark knocks on the door. The man in the room says "Come in". Mark asks "Are you Barney?" The man says "So". Mark says "I phoned you yesterday, my name is..." Barney interrupts him and says "Never mind. You wanted a job done, is that it?" Marks say "Yeah". Barney says "You want a short job, or all the way?" Mark looked confused. Barney says "A short job is to scare him, break an arm, or rough him up". Mark says "No, this has to be all the way".

Casey, Crime Photographer - The Lady in Distress

About two o'clock in the morning, down a narrow midtown street lined with nightclubs, a cowboy is wandering along. His ten gallon hat and his high heeled boots seem very much out of place in this metropolitan city. Suddenly from a shadowed doorway, he hears a lady say "Mister, mister please". He says "You talking to me ma'am?" She says "Yes come closer. Here, where we can't be seen. I'm in desperate trouble and I simply can't go to the police. Not yet. You're appearing in the rodeo aren't you?" He says "Yes ma'am. I'm at the Coliseum". She says "You're from the south like me". He says "I come from Texas". She says "You're not a part of this town, this street. I can trust you" He says "Well, I reckon you can ma'am. What you want I should do?" She says "Get a cab here for me and then ride with me to Union Terminal". He says "Well I'd be glad to but why?" She says "All I can tell you is some men are looking for me and if I'm found I may be killed".

Mr. Chameleon - The Hanging Judge Murder Case

Judge Hatch is walking quickly and impatiently along a corridor of the Cyrus Blackstone Museum in New York. Accompanying the judge is his young, and obviously puzzled, daughter whom says "Father what's this all about? Why did you insist on coming here to the museum today? The Judge says "You'll soon find out, Barbara". She says "You've never come near this museum before, even though Cyrus Blackstone was your cousin. Then, you suddenly decide that you have to come here this afternoon. Father, are you listening to me?" The Judge says "I've seen that man before". Barbara says "Which man do you mean?" Judge says "Barbara, come into this room quickly. I don't want him to see me. I'll pretend to look at this antique wooden box".  Barbara says "But father, the sign there says do not touch. All these things are very valuable". Judge says "Never mind the sign. I'm going to look at this box, then I will have a little talk with the head of this museum, Miss Priscilla Ames. Yes, incidentally, this box is a work of art. Come and look at it, Barbara". Suddenly, a gunshot is heard. Barbara says "Oh good heavens, he is dead, he is dead!"

Pat Novak, For Hire - Geranium Plant

Pat closed his office and walked down to Noonan’s Bar. A lady comes into the bar and sits down next to Pat. She says "I went to your office but they said you were over here. I want to hire you Mr. Novak". Pat says "You got a name to go with a figure?" She says "It won't fit in your file. I want you for three hours work, tomorrow afternoon. Can you do it?". Pat says "If I said yes, it might be too tough". She says "There's a flower stand at the corner of Post and Kearney Streets. I want you to go to that stand tomorrow afternoon at 2:00 pick up a geranium, and take it to this address". Pat says "I'm too big to be a Western Union boy". She says "Are you too big for fifty bucks?" Pat says "No. It must be a pretty geranium at those prices". She says "Some people love nature Mr. Novak. Go to the stand and tell them you want the plant, then take it straight to the address I gave you. It's important, don't let it out of your hands". Pat says "For fifty bucks, I'll act like we're married".

Inspector Thorne - The Defrosted Refrigerator Murder Clue

Marsha Winters, wife of wealthy banker Arnold Winters, is standing in front of the refrigerator in her large kitchen. As she opens the refrigerator door, she says to herself "This refrigerator needs defrosting again. Oh, my friends would laugh seeing me, of all people, the glamorous young wife of old moneybags Arnold Winters doing kitchen work". Emily, Marsha's sister-in-law, walks into the kitchen and says "Marsha, I came here for a showdown with you. I'm your husband's sister, and you are his wife". Marsha says "Oh, nothing for us to quarrel about there Emily, we are practically sisters". Emily says "Sisters? Forget that, we are both infatuated with the same man". Marsha says "What do you mean by that?" Emily says "You know what I mean Marsha. I am warning you to leave my fiancé Eric Stevenson alone!" Marsha says "All right, you asked for it. Eric Stevenson is not your man. He's mine. Mine, I tell you, and we have plans that don't take you into account" Emily says "You're married to my brother! I'll tell him the whole thing!" Marsha says "I can wrap him around my finger. He won't believe you!" Emily says "Listen Marsha, you will put Eric Stevenson out of your life or I'll kill you!" 

The Adventures of Philip Marlowe - The Friend from Detroit

Marlowe is in the middle of a strange dream, when his telephone rang. He picks it up. It is Dave Pryor, owner of the corner coffee shop. He says "Marlowe, this is Dave. Betty's gone. She's in trouble. You've got to help me, Marlowe. You've got to come over to my apartment, right away!" Marlowe says "Dave, it's one o'clock in the morning, and I'm in bed. You know I don't get in the middle of family quarrels". Dave says "It's not like that. Phil, believe me, I'm scared for her. Phil, please come over to the apartment. It's at 2000 Beechwood, It's a matter of life and death". Marlowe says "Okay, okay. I'll be there in ten minutes. When he arrives, Dave says "Marlowe, Marlowe, I thought you'd never get here. Look, somebody fired a shot through the door and when I got back with the aspirin, Betty was gone!" Marlowe says "All right, wait a minute, Dave. Hold it. I'm not even awake yet. Look, sit down. Take it from the top, slowly". Dave says "Yeah, okay. Maybe it started this morning at the coffee joint when a fancy guy came in and talked to Betty".

The Whistler - The Hangtree Affair

Lee Ryan is on the train from Chicago heading toward the West Coast. Feeling a little bored and impatient, he decided that the club car might help pass the time. Once there, Lee found a familiar face that he had known casually over a number of years, a talkative newspaper reporter who seemed to know many things about many people. The reporter says to Lee "You picked a good train. You can continue to follow my boy there, Jeff Larkin. I have to get off this train at the next stop, because, according to my newspaper, there's no story here". Lee says "Larkin? That name sounds familiar". Reporter says "Yeah, he looks that way too. He's sitting right over there with that girl". Lee says "Oh, she's not bad". Reporter says "Oh, she is just like all the rest, hanging around him thinking he's going to get that money". Lee says "What money?" Reporter says "Oh, you didn't recognize him. He's an ex-con now, but I knew him when he was a big man. He'd plan the robberies and his partner, Noisy Nevins, would pull them off.  Their last job was a 100,000 dollar bank job. Larkin got careless, and he got five years". Lee asks "Who got the 100,000?" Reporter says "It disappeared, so did Nevins".

The Molle Mystery Theater - Make No Mistake

Dave Kimbell has one more important thing left to do. He has to see Jeannie. He has to tell her it was all a mistake, a hideous mistake. And he has to hurry, because he knew the police are going to pick him up any minute now. He had to, somehow, explain the mistake. Even now, he could not look back and say just exactly where the mistake had been made. He could not tell, even now, with death on his hands. Maybe this was a mistake too, coming to see Jeannie. But, he had to do it. After that, whatever happened did not matter. He went up the steps and rang the doorbell. Soon, Mr. Mundy came to the door. He says "May I help you, sir?" Dave says "I'd like to see Jeannie, Mrs. Jean Kimball". Mundy says "Oh yes, and your name, sir?" Dave says "I'm her husband, Dave Kimball". Mundy says "You're... Oh. Oh, I see. Step this way". As Dave followed Mr. Mundy down the soundless corridor, he tried hard to think, to frame the words he needed to say, because this is the last time he would ever see Jeannie.

The Man Called X - Carbon Fourteen

From a small office in the Physics Building at a University near Los Angeles, a man is making a long distance call to New York. A call that could affect the lives of millions of people.  The man says "Hello, is that you Mr. Thurston?" Ken says "That's right, who's calling?" The man says "My name is Bill Wilson. I'm a physics instructor out here at the University. You don't know me but things are happening out here. Mr. Thurston, you've got to fly to Los Angeles today." Ken says "Oh, suppose you offer some inducements, Wilson, such as why?" Wilson says "Have you ever heard of Carbon 14? Would it mean anything to you if I said that a lot of it has been disappearing out here?" Ken says "Go on Wilson" Wilson says "Well, I'm afraid to talk freely over the phone, Mr. Thurston, but I can tell you this, the Carbon 14..." Suddenly, two shots rang out. Ken says "Wilson, what's happened there? Hello, Wilson, can you hear me? Hello?" 

Richard Diamond, Private Detective - The Gibson Murder Case

In an apartment on the Upper East Side, Harvey and Virginia are packing their bags in an attempt to make a quick exit. It seems that they were attempting to run a blackmail scheme on an older man named Leland Gibson, except he did not fall for it. As they are hurrying to leave before the police appeared, there is a knock at the door, Harvey answers it. Leland Gibson says "Hello Virginia. Yes, I waited around at the other apartment and followed you here. I wanted to be sure to send the police to the right place". Harvey says "Now, look Mr. Gibson.." Gibson interrupts him and says "Now you look, whatever your name is. I don't like being blackmailed or threatened".  Harvey says "Mr. Gibson, why don't you give her a break. I'm not asking for me." Gibson says "That's very noble of you. You should have thought about that a few hours ago when you accused me of making love to your wife. You're not really married, are you?". At that point, Harvey grabs Mr. Gibson and pulls him into the apartment.

Barrie Craig, Confidential Investigator - Behold a Corpse

Barrie Craig meets his latest client on a horse and buggy ride around Central Park for three dollars an hour. Although it was freezing outside, he did not mind, because she was paying for it and he had dealt with eccentrics before. Her name is Brenda Connor, a brunette with tendency to overact. Barrie asks her "Who is the demon that is pursuing you?" She says "It's my husband, Ralph Connor. He was gone for five years, completely out of my life. I'd almost forgotten him. Then, a week ago, he came back to me". Barrie asks "Do you resent his return?" Brenda says "I didn't say that". Barrie says "That's right, you didn't, but you don't exactly look overjoyed". She said "No, but it isn't what you think. I have no basic quarrel with my marriage even despite the separation but, Ralph, this man who has come back, I am really not so sure that it is him".

CBS Radio Mystery Theater - Sea of Troubles

Owen Leighton had arrived in Paris at 10 o'clock that morning, but did not leave his hotel room until well after 4:00 PM. He knew his brother Gerald's habits only too well. He would probably be sleeping until noon, but by 4 o'clock he would be at Patrick's Cafe on the Rue de Montparnasse.  Upon arriving at Patrick's, Owen choose a table well to the side, but still garnered attention with his long beard, crutches, and heavily bandaged foot. Soon, Gerald walks over and says "Well, what do you know Owen, how have you been? What's wrong with your foot?" Owen says "Hello Gerald, I'm glad you recognized me with the beard and the bandages. I haven't seen my kid brother in over a year. Do a favor for me, finish this drink for me, I really should not be drinking with the gout". Gerald says "How is Harriet, still the same?" Owen says "No, she's more of the same. She's richer than ever, fatter than ever, and meaner than ever". Gerald says "She couldn't be too mean, she let you grow that beard". Owen says "Well, I had my reasons for growing it Gerald. It was all part of my plan". Gerald asks "What plan?" Owen replies "Well, to kill my mean, fat wife, of course".

The Lives of Harry Lime - It's a Knockout

Harry and Jenny Warren, his partner in his latest confidence scheme, were in the airport. Jenny says "Point him out to me, Harry". Harry says "There he is, the one cleaning out his pipe. That's Stan Pierce, our little sucker. He is getting on the plane bound for Miami, taking a vacation". Jenny says "He's not bad looking". Harry says "Keep your mind on your work. He's worth at least 30 thousand if you do as I tell you". Jenny says "Don't worry, Harry, I'll have him in Havana with his thirty thousand inside of 48 hours." Harry says "Oh, okay, I'll be waiting for him. Now, try to get a seat near him on the plane and don't forget when you meet me in Havana, I'm not Harry Lime, I'm J. Harrington Lime, the wall street tycoon". Jenny says "Don't worry" as she left to board the Miami plane. Harry knew that when a businessman like Stan Pierce goes on a vacation, and finds himself sitting on the plane next to a pretty girl, the work of the confidence man becomes much more simple.

Johnny gets a phone call from Pat Cummings at the Inter-Allied Life Insurance Company. He asks Johnny "Have you ever heard of Everett Benton? He's involved with a a New York investment firm that deals with real estate, oil, and mining". Johnny says "I'm afraid not. What about him?" Pat says "We are carrying a one hundred thousand dollar life insurance policy on him, and last night, he fell out of a fourteen story window". Johnny says "That is bad. Was it an accident or suicide?" Pat says "Maybe neither, I think he was pushed". Johnny says "I'll be right over". When Johnny arrives, he asks "What can you tell me about Everett Benton?" Pat says "He was 45 years old and doing very well in business, as far as we know. At about 10 o'clock last night, he fell, jumped, or was pushed out the window". Johnny asks "This policy he had, who was the beneficiary? Pat says "His wife, Clair. She was about 12 years younger than him, and has red hair. So, what do you think? Johnny says "I think I better have a talk with Mrs. Benton".

The Adventures of Rocky Jordan - The Man They All Loved

Rocky and a couple of his friends planned to take a day off and go hunting for gazelle at a place near Helwan. When the day arrived, Rocky woke up early to get ready for the trip down the Nile. He walks down the stairs from his living quarters into the cafe. The Tambourine still reeks from Oriental smoke from a few hours before, so he went to open the front door for some fresh air. When he opens it, a dead man that was leaning against door, fell inside the cafe. The first thing Rocky notices is his unusual clothes, headdress, and heavy shoes, all in black. Just then, another figure moves from the shadows outside. It is a little beggar named "Samak" that Rocky has seen a few times wandering in the native quarter. Rocky says "Nothing here for you to see, Samak, move along". Samak tries to get the man's wallet, but Rocky prevents him. Rocky opens the wallet for the man's identification. Samak sees the man's name, and starts running away in fear.

Mr. District Attorney - The Vanishing Runner

On a rainy night, Rocky and Francine are driving an unconscious man named Ferguson out into the country to get rid of him. It seems that Ferguson had a streak of luck tonight and won a large sum of money gambling. Francine says "He is not just another gambler who can't go to the police, Rocky. He's an important man, and he'll make trouble". Rocky says "what do you want me to do, wake him up tell him I'm sorry and give the money back? Suckers ain't supposed to win. I run that game for me to win, one way or another". Rocky then stops the car and says "This place is as good as any". Now, Francine, just shut your mouth and help me get him out, will you?" She says "Rocky, please!" He says "So help me, if I hear one more word out of you, I'll shove the muzzle of this gun down your throat and will pull the trigger". Francine says "Don't hurt me Rocky, I'll help you". After they get Ferguson out of the car, Rocky says "Alright, do you hear anyone coming?" Francine says "I can't hear anything in this rain". He says "That's good. Nobody else will hear anything either. Well, goodbye Mr. Ferguson, too bad you got so lucky". Then, two shots rang out.

Mr. Keen, Tracer of Lost Persons - The Yellow Talon Murder Case

Philip Carter and his fiancé, Eloise Gray, pay a visit to Mr. Keen's office, hoping that he can help them. Philip says "Mr. Keen, could you possibly give us a few minutes of your time, sir? I'd be very grateful". Mr. Keen says "Certainly, just what is it you want to see me about?" Philip says "A murder, Mr. Keen. My sister Helen was killed last night in the family estate. Mike Clancy, Mr. Keen's partner, says "We didn't read anything about it in the newspapers". Philip says "The family estate is fifty miles from here, on the Hudson River. It will probably be reported in the newspapers later today". Mr. Keen says "Philip, you and Miss Gray please have a seat and give me all the details". Philip says "My sister Helen was found in the study about midnight by our Uncle Jonathan. He's been living with us ever since the death of our parents years ago. I'll never forget last night as long as I live". Mr. Keen says "How was Helen Carter killed?" Philip says "That was the most horrible thing of all, Mr. Keen. My sister had been strangled and her throat was terribly lacerated. It was as if some gigantic bird with sharp talons or claws had attacked her".

In the city of Toronto, Ontario, late one night two men were in a room on the fourth floor of a cheap hotel near the union station.  One was a middle-aged, bald fellow nicknamed "Sonny". He sat on the edge of the bed while the other one, Big Jim Labard occupied the only upholstered chair in the room. After a moment, Big Jim got up and walked to the dresser to pour drinks to bind the deal they just closed. He said "Okay Sonny, we will have a drink on it.  May you make a fortune out of the deal". Sonny says "Much obliged, Jim, for wishing me a fortune. You already made your fortune from what I paid". Jim says "If you want it, you have to pay the price". Sonny says "That's the first time I ever paid 400 per ounce, and probably the last". Jim says "Look Sonny, an ounce of heroin is just as hard to come by here in Canada as it is in the States. I am the hottest guy in Canada right now. I've got three King's warrants out after me".

It is 9:30 PM and the small American freighter, the Edna Mae, out of Maracaibo continues steadily on its northward course toward New Orleans. In his cabin under the bridge, Captain Peterson has been dinner host to two of the ship's passengers, a Dr. Mahler and his secretary, Miss Karen Brennan. Suddenly, Mr. Raimy opens the door and says "Beg your pardon, Captain. It looks like it is making up in the northwest. Captain says "Secure everything, I will be along". Raimy says "Right, sir". Captain says "Well, I'm afraid folks, it is going to get a little rough. The Doctor and Miss Brennan thank the Captain for the wonderful dinner, and start to make their way to their cabins. As they walk past the radio room, Miss Brennan says "Oh, wait a minute. I've left my handbag in the Captain's cabin". The Doctor says "I'll get it for you my dear. You go on ahead to your cabin". Miss Brennan says "Thank you Doctor. Be careful because it is getting rough out here". As he heads back toward the Captain's cabin, he has a deadly encounter someone unknown to him.

Jeff Regan, Investigator - The Lady with Too Much Hair

Anthony J. Lyon told Regan "We have some business with a lady named Hazel Carr. Go to 1302 Beechwood Street and hide behind a tree or something. In about 45 minutes, you should see a red-headed guy coming out of the house. Get a real good look at him, so you'll know him anytime you see him". Regan asks "Where does Hazel Carr fit in?" Lyon says "She's inside the house. After you spot the guy, go in and see her. She will then tell you all you need to know. Now get going!" Regan drove to the address on Beechwood, and parked his car across the street. After a few minutes, a big guy in a trench coat stepped on the running board of Regan's car and stuck his head in the window. Regan says "Beat it, you're spoiling my view. The big guy says "So, you're just looking, huh?" Regan says "Yeah". Big guy says "Me too. See ya". Soon, the red-headed guy comes out of the house and starts walking down the street. The big guy follows him. Regan gets out of his car and goes to the front door. The doorbell sounds like it belongs in Buckingham Palace, but the woman that answered was no queen.

Inspector Carr receives a phone call from the Operations Division about some information from the Foreign Office. Inspector Carr is told that a man named William Banbury is coming from the Foreign Office to speak with him. It seems that there is some doubt as to whether a man they found dead was murdered or committed suicide. The dead man was Sir Roland Makepeace. After Mr. Banbury arrives, he says "Inspector Carr, there's nothing to indicate that he was murdered. Sir Roland was head of our Eastern European Division and was on the point of preparing a memorandum that would profoundly affect the member states of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization". Inspector Carr says "Mr. Banbury, you wouldn't have got in touch with Scotland Yard unless you yourself were pretty certain that this gentleman was murdered. Have you any other reasons for suspecting foul play other than some foreign power wanting to stop him from issuing his memorandum?"

The Adventures of Sam Spade - The Rushlight Diamond Caper

Sam pays a visit to the elegant Rushlight residence at 21A Granite Court. The butler escorts him to the morning room, where he meets Mrs. Nancy Ward, Mrs. Rushlight's social secretary, who tells Sam that his job will be to guard the wedding presents at the pending nuptials of Mrs. Rushlight's nephew Ralph. Mrs. Ward then introduces Sam to Mrs. Rushlight, who does not seem too fond of either her nephew nor his bride to be. She says "the wedding presents will hardly be worth guarding, except for one. The one I am giving, the Rushlight Diamond. It's not quite as big as the Hope Diamond, but it does not contain a single flaw. It is priceless, however, it is also considered to bring bad luck to whomever possesses it". She then gives it to Sam for safekeeping.

Screen Guild Theater - Blind Alley

Dr. William Shelton, Professor of Psychology, at a Midwest college, and his wife, Shelby are at home talking about the end of the semester. The nurse that they hired to take care of their little boy was upstairs putting him to bed. Shelby says "This summer you're going to take a real vacation. You're going to forget classwork, lectures, and profound essays on what makes people tick". Suddenly, they heard their front door shut. As Dr. Shelton gets up to see who it is, two men and a woman enter their room. The first man says "Stay right where you are mister". Shelby says "How dare you come in here!" The man says "Take it easy lady". The professor says "Now see here, who are you?" The first man says "My name is Hal Wilson. Take a look in the other rooms, Mazie. Pull down those window shades, Buck." The professor asks "To what circumstances do we owe the honor of this visit?" Hal says "The cops are right on my tail, and I needed a hideout".

The New Adventures of Nero Wolfe - Dear Dead Lady

A prosperous-looking young guy in expensive clothes came in and stood in front of the Mr. Wolfe's chair. He says "My name is Oliphant, Mr. Wolfe. I am the spiritual leader and guiding head of a small religious group known as the Seekers of the Inner Power". Mr. Wolfe says "Ah, I see. You are also a man addicted to marrying neither wisely nor well, but often". Oliphant says "You read the papers". Wolfe says "Yes, I do. Oliphant says "Mr. Wolfe, I am as aware of my sin-ridden past as anyone else is. Even a person such as I can see the light in time". Wolfe says "Good, now might I ask why you've come to see me, Mr. Oliphant?" He says "I need your help, Mr. Wolfe. There is a certain young lady with whom I'm deeply in love. I've asked her to marry me and she's given me some hope". Archie says "Well, then where's the problem?" He says "The problem is the presence of another man in her life. I want you to save Elsa Dana's life. Mr. Wolfe, this other man I spoke of, is insanely jealous. Not only of Elsa's present, but of her past as well. He has threatened to kill her.

Box 13 - Hot Box

Dan receives a letter that reads "Enclosed you will find enough money to do what I want you to do. Go to the Mason Auction Room and bid on an old Chinese teakwood box. I must have that box. If you get it for me, wait for further instructions". The letter had no address or signature. Dan makes his way to the auction, but arrives a little too late. The teakwood box was just sold to a small, nervous looking man that held onto it tightly. Dan signaled to him and he left quickly. The man ran across the street, right into the path of an oncoming car. The man was badly hurt. A crowd started gathering around. Dan looked around but did not see the teakwood box. Then, he saw a red-haired female getting into a taxi with the box under her arm. Before Dan could push his way through the crowd, the taxi was gone, but he did get it's number. It should be easy to find the driver's name and ask him a few questions.

Bold Venture - A Bullet for Shannon

Mr. Bullock has hired Slate Shannon and Saylor Duval to take him from Havana to Key West at night aboard his boat, the "Bold Venture". Mr. Bullock is carrying a large sum of money with him. As they are walking toward the boat, two men in a car pull up to them. One of the men, nicknamed "Dolly", gets out of the car and shoots Bullock. They make a hasty retreat back to their employer, Johnny Rice. Once there, Johnny says "Tell me how Bullock died". Dolly says "He took four slugs to the chest". Johnny asks "Who was driving?" Dolly says "Marchek was driving". Johnny says "Marchek, I told you to do the shooting and Dolly drives. Next time, do it the way I told you. It's the little things like that annoy me. Take Bullock, a bookkeeper who walks out with 50 thousand dollars. It's not the money, it's the annoyance. There is no chance for Bullock is there?" Dolly says "No chance, it happened so fast the guy and the dame were...." Johnny interrupts him and says "What guy and dame?" Dolly says "The guy and dame who were talking to Bullock". Johnny says "Get them and bring them here".

Mr. Lawrence Westbourne and his wife Gertrude had been attacked during the previous week by four youths armed with knives. They were badly hurt, but still alive. The couple were returning home from shopping, and were attacked in an alley. Inspector Black brought Mr. Westbourne to a police line-up at Scotland Yard. He chose three individuals, However, he was mistaken on two of them, as they were not involved. The Inspector says "We know this gang has been working the streets for five or six months. This is the first chance we have had to make a positive identification. You and Mrs. Westbourne are not the first victims by a long shot. We need you and your wife both to make identifications". Mr. Westbourne says "I picked out one of them, send him to prison". Inspector says "I'm sure we will, sir, but we need all of them. We need the other three as well".

R. D. Wingfield - Credit Risk

A man walks into Dobson's Department Store and heads toward the Men's Jewelry area. Miss James, working behind the counter says "Can I help you sir? He says "Yes, I want one of those electronic watches". She says "Certainly sir, which model? They start at... " He interrupts her and says "Never mind the price, uh, that one. You do take the Sesame Credit Card don't you?" She says "We accept all cards, sir. It's a lovely watch isn't it, I'll show you how it works". He says "Oh, it doesn't matter, I'm in a hurry". She says "Very well, if you'd let me have your credit card, we'll be phoning it through while I make out your receipt". He says "What do you mean by phoning it through?  She says "It's just routine sir, for a purchase over a certain amount, we have to get authorization from the credit card company. It won't take long". He says "No, forget it. I don't want the watch. How about the cigarette case there, the small one for 6 pounds, 60. Would you have to get authorization for that?" She says "Not for a small amount sir". He says "All right, I'll have that".

Fred Fontaine and Sandy Oppenheim hire Richie Holland, a private detective, to locate a missing girl named Connie Burton. Fontaine gives Richie a picture of the girl, which he sticks into his coat pocket. A few days later, Richie's wife June accuses him of cheating on her, because she finds the picture of Connie in his coat pocket. He tries to explain that it is just a job, but June does not want to listen. June says "Yesterday, I saw that girl in Marshall Field's and I followed her'. Richie says "You saw this girl?" June says "Yes, she dyed her hair blonde, and is using the name Lyla Grayson. She is living at the Beverly Apartments. You are not fooling me with this act". Richie gets up to leave, and June says "Where are you going?" He goes to an outside phone and calls Connie. She answers, and Richie says "Is this Connie?" She says "No, my name is Lyla Grayson". Richie says "If this is not Connie, then I guess you wouldn't be interested in my message". Connie says "Wait, assuming that I was Connie, what is the message?" Richie says "Two guys are after you, one is named Fontaine, and the other is named Sandy".

Carter Brown Mysteries - Curves for a Coroner

Four entertainers, Walt Lund, Kate Germaine, June Sherman, and Terry Tomlin are riding in an old bus on a snowy and windy night making their way to the next show in Exeter. Their bus driver is named Harry. In the theatrical circles their act was known as Four for Frivolity. While on the road, the bus comes to a slow stop. Kate asks "Why did we stop, what's wrong?" Harry says "We've had it. Burned out bearings, I wouldn't be surprised". Walt asks "What do we do now?" Harry says "We walk". Kate and June say "We're not walking in this snow. You big brave boys find us some shelter, then lead us to it". Walt and Terry start walking. They soon find a large house. When they get closer, Terry says "That's not a house, it's a castle". After knocking on the front door, the butler opens it and says "Yes?". Walt and Terry explain their situation, and the butler says "Very well, come and speak to the Master".

Calling All Cars - The Murder Quartet

Mrs. Mudge sees Mrs. McManus on her way down to the Relief Headquarters to get her children something to eat. Mrs. McManus says that she has had a plumbing problem and has not seen the landlady, Mrs. Watson, for the last three days. Mrs. Mudge says that she has not seen her either, so they decide to go to her apartment. They knock on her door, but there is no answer. Mrs. McManus looks through the keyhole and sees that the place is a mess. Concerned about her, they call the police. The police discover that Mrs. Watson has been murdered. She had been tied up and beaten with a blunt instrument. The police said it looked like a robbery. They call the coroner, then start questioning her neighbors. One of them says that she had some money in her room and always wore a big diamond ring.

The Big Story - The Lottery Racket

Keeler McCartney, a reporter from the Atlanta Constitution newspaper, is talking to another reporter. Keeler says "The City Editor gave me the assignment to help clean up the lottery racket in this town". The reporter says "How do they operate the lottery?" Keeler says "The lottery numbers are determined by the third, fourth, and fifth digit of the daily bond total in the paper. It pays off 450 to 1, but the odds are 1,000 to 1 against winning. How do you find out about the lottery?" The other reporter says "Place a bet. A fellow down the street from me named Joe Sampson gambles a lot on it. Ask him, he should be able to make contact for you". Keeler goes to Samson's home, and finds his wife there. They sit on the front porch, and Joe's wife tells him about how Joe's gambling has affected their lives.

The Clock - Hollywood Heartache

Mrs. Arlene Finney is talking to a police officer. She says "I don't know why I waited so long to call the police". The officer says "what's the story Mrs. Finney?" She says "Well, it started a couple of months ago in Santa Monica. I was a cashier in a barbecue place when I first met George Finney. I liked him right away. He worked in Hollywood, and Hollywood was just where I wanted to be. So, you're in pictures Mr. Finney, are you an actor?" He said "Oh, not a chance, I work inside the production end". She said "I always wanted to get into pictures, but never had much luck". Then, he says "With your looks, you don't need luck". When do you get off from work?" She says "In about half an hour". He says "Why don't we go to the beach and talk it over?" So, I met him at the beach. He was a perfect gentleman. From there we started seeing each other 3 or 4 times a week. About a month later, he asked me to marry him, and I said yes. On the way back from the honeymoon to Los Angeles he started talking about being practical and taking out a 50 thousand dollar life insurance policy on himself and making me the beneficiary".

Crime and Peter Chambers - Joan Bradley

Peter receives a phone call one rainy evening from a woman named Mary Doyle. She says "I'm glad I was able to reach you. I own a rooming house at 801 West 53rd Street. I need a bodyguard for tonight". Peter says "It is pouring rain outside". She says "I know but it's kind of an emergency. It's about 100 thousand dollars. 100 thousand dollars in cash...". Suddenly, the line goes dead. Peter says "Hello...hello...are you there?" He hears nothing. He starts for the address she gave him. He arrives and knocks on the door, but there is no answer. He turns the doorknob, the door is open, and slowly goes inside. He sees an attractive, but unconscious lady sitting by the phone, which is off the receiver. He helps her to regain conciseness. She asks him "Who are you?" He said "I'm Peter Chambers, we were just talking on the phone". She says "Good, stay right here" and quickly runs up the stairs. She soon screams, and Peter follows her up the stairs. They are both looking at a dead woman, with a nickel plated revolver laying next to her.

The Man From Homicide - The Lucille Forbes Case

Lieutenant Lou Dana arrives at the scene of the crime, which is the ladies lounge at the local theater. The victim is identified as Lucille Forbes. Dana noticed that her wrists were cut. Sergeant Meyers says "Maybe she did it herself, Lou. She might have broken up with her boyfriend and committed suicide. It happens sometime". Dana says "Yes it does, but not this time. You've seen how people die, they don't do it gently even if they want to die. They lose consciousness and then the death spasms start. The blood doesn't run out of the wrists in two neat pools, it spatters things up. There is only one way she could die that easy with her wrists cut. She was drugged. Have the boys from the crime lab do some tests".

Escape - The Red Forest

It had taken him five years, three months, and four days, but he finally found what he was looking for in an old shack in the Clearwater County of Idaho . The trail led from a lumber town along a washboard road and into the forests. It was still afternoon when he started back to his car. He noticed that something seemed different. The trail had disappeared. Then, he sees it, a coiled rattlesnake. Fortunately, it did not strike. It seemed to be more afraid of something else. He remembered throwing a cigarette away about 3 or 4 hours ago, and that is when the fire started. He started to run. It was almost dark when he finally found the road, about half a mile down from where he parked his car. Half an hour later, outside a small town, he picked up a girl hitchhiking her way to Missoula. She soon grew sleepy and started to take a nap in the car, when he saw lights flashing. There was a police officer was standing in the road waving his arms.

A Case for Dr. Morelle - Confession of Guilt

Dr. Morelle and his secretary, Miss Frayle, are returning from the legal and medical dinner, which was a speaking engagement for the Doctor. They notice a police car parked in front of an office. Miss Frayle says "I know the driver, he drives for Inspector Hood". The driver says "Good evening Dr. Morelle and Miss Frayle". Miss Frayle says "Good evening, is something going on?" He says "Nothing really special, a suicide". Inspector Hood comes out of the office and says "Sorry to have to leave your speech, Dr. Morelle". Morelle says "I am gratified to see it was business and not boredom which was responsible". Hood says "Yes, I was in the area and had to respond". By the way, Doctor, how many cases do you recall where the suicide shoots himself through the heart? In my experience, it is always through the head". Morelle says "I'm inclined to agree with you".

Night Beat - Molly Keller

Randy's story for today came over the teletype. It read "Charles Keller died today in the state penitentiary. Keller served 14 years of a 20 year sentence for armed robbery. Keller died still denying any knowledge of the $65,000 payroll robbery of 14 years ago. Keller's death deepens the mystery of the stolen money which was never recovered". As the teletype machine stopped, Randy thought about Charles's wife Molly, a quiet, patient woman who worked in this same building, scrubbing floors at night. As Randy walked down toward the lobby, he met Tim the night watchman. He asked Tim "Where is Molly?" Tim says "I don't know. When I came in tonight, she wasn't here. Why?" Randy said "Her husband died tonight. She didn't send word, or call in sick, anything like that?" Tim says "No, not that I know of. Just ain't here, that's all. First night she has missed in 14 years". 

The Mysterious Traveler - Death is My Caller

Henry Norton, a wealthy stock broker, is in his office is signing some letters when he's called on the office intercom by his secretary, Miss Perry. She says "Mr. Norton, there is a Mr. Blair here to see you, Charles Blair. He said you know him very well". Norton says "Oh...Charlie Blair! Tell him I'm not in! Tell him I'm out of town, anything! I don't want to see him. I don't ever want to see him! Miss Perry says "He says he knows you're here and insists on talking to you! Oh, sorry Mr. Norton, he just forced his way in and I couldn't stop him!" Norton says "It's quite alright Miss Perry, I'll see him". Charlie says "Hello, Henry. I thought you'd be delighted to see your ex-partner. We haven't seen each other for seven long years".  Norton says " I didn't know you were out already, I thought you had three more years to go". Charlie says "I did, but good behavior cut three years off my sentence".

Dragnet - The Big Kill

On Sunday, May 23rd, Joe Friday and his partner, Ben Romero, had worked the day shift in the Homicide Division of the Los Angeles Police Department. They were off duty when they received an emergency call, and got to Room 42 at five minutes past 3:00 AM. They were told that Police Officer Robert Fillmore had been killed. Fillmore was working the day watch out of robbery. He left work at six o'clock last night, and drove home. He had dinner and then he and his wife went to a show. They got home about 11:30 PM, and went to bed. About 1:30 this morning the front doorbell rang and Fillmore answered it. His wife said she heard him open the door and there was a gunshot. She ran to the front door in time to see a guy jump in a car and drive away. Fillmore was lying on a porch, chest ripped open. This guy used a shotgun, point blank.

Dangerous Assignment - Recover Stolen Missile Plan Microfilm

Steve Mitchell walks into the Commissioner's office and says "Good morning Commissioner. Ruth said you have something for me".  He says "Yes I do Steve, here it is, a plane ticket to Dublin, Ireland. You will be looking for something about the size of a walnut". Steve says "I going all the way to Dublin to look for nuts? I can find plenty of them here at home". Commissioner says "It is the SIZE of a walnut, but a lot more valuable. It's a roll of microfilm, Steve, containing the complete plans of our latest and most improved guided missile. We believe it was smuggled out of the country by a man named Ernest Webber. If so, he has a two-day head start on us. He left by plane on the day before yesterday. Here is his picture, and all the information we have on him. We are depending on you to get that microfilm. You've got your assignment Steve, good luck".

The Adventures of the Falcon - The Case of the Baby Brother

It is Sunday afternoon in New York and a frightened blonde named Diana Wayne hurries down the second floor corridor of The Maxton, a shabby rooming house on Manhattan's west side. When she comes to Room 2C, Miss Wayne is knocking on the door and says "Steve, let me in. For Heaven's sake let me in!" Steve says "All right give a guy a chance, will you?" He unlocks the door, she jumps in to his room and says "Lock it. Lock the door!" After a few seconds, she says "Okay, give me a drink". He says "It's kind of early Diana". She says "Give me a drink, then sit down and listen. We have got to leave town. I saw Josh Brady in Time Square today". Steve says "What is Brady doing away from Washington?" Diana says "He's after me. If you hadn't thrown away the money I took from him on the horses, we wouldn't be in this jam".

Rogue's Gallery - Cabin on the Lake

Richard was spending a week, and the proceeds from his last case, in a swanky summer cabin that was one of fifty on the hotel grounds. The social secretary of the hotel was named Janice Cole, a beautiful young lady of about 28 years old, who, unfortunately, was engaged to a wealthy society playboy named Clint Hayes. There was a dance that evening in the the hotel ballroom, and Clint and Janice were putting on quite an exhibition. While out on the floor, Janice was looking at Richard when suddenly a strange look of fear appeared on her face. Soon after, she said she had a terrible headache and wanted to go to her cabin to lie down for a while. About 30 minutes later, Richard decided to look in on her. He left the ballroom, and walked outside toward Janice's bungalow. Once there, he noticed a light on, and the door was ajar. When he knocked on it, it swung open. He took a few steps inside, and saw Janice lying there, a red pool of blood expanding on the Navajo rug under her head. 

Stand By for Crime - The Black Hand

Chuck Morgan and Carol Curtis are having dinner at Nicodell's Restaurant, when a stranger comes to their table. He asks Chuck if he can talk to him for a minute. Chuck says "Sure, have a seat". The stranger says "My name is Frank Dawson, and I am a frightened man. Four nights ago, I witnessed a murder. I saw Elmer Hatfield shot to death". Carol says "Elmer Hatfield was the councilman who was murdered for cracking down on the rackets around the town". Chuck says "The police have been trying to find who did it.  Did you recognize the man who fired the shots, Frank?" Frank says "No, but I recognized the man driving the getaway car. His name is Jack Stone".  Carol says "You must have a good reason for not going to the police". Frank says "I do, look at this card". He reached into his pocket and pulled out the card. It had no writing on it, just the imprint of a black hand. 

Broadway is My Beat - The Tommy Stafford Murder Case

It was 11:30 PM and Detective Danny Clover was on his way home, when a squad car picked him up on 43rd Street and a man told Danny that his working day was not over. They were from the Technical Lab and on their way to the scene of the crime, which was Coney Island. When he arrived, there was a crowd gathered around the roller coaster, and a police officer named Muggerman was waiting for Danny. The man said "Hi Danny, there's a guy there in the third seat of this car, dead". Danny asks "Who stabbed him?" Muggerman says "We have no idea, except that somebody sat behind him and pushed a knife into him. We have no witnesses". Danny asks "Who found him?" A man standing near says "Me, I did. My name is Frank Crisio, and I run this ride. The dead guy sitting there had a half a dozen tickets in his hatband. For each ride, I just pulled a ticket out. I figured he didn't want to be disturbed. When he ran out of tickets, I had to disturb him".

Nick Carter, Master Detective - The Funeral Wreath

In Nick's office, Lieutenant Riley is telling Nick and Patsy about an unfortunate experience. He says "Old man Bramble has been giving me trouble about there being four robberies on Pine street in the past three weeks. So, I picked the best man I've got on the force and I sent him there".  About 1:00 AM this morning I decided to go up there and have a look for myself. I asked the officer "How are you making out?" He said "Nothing  was stirring so far. There have been no suspicious characters around at all". Then, he asks me "Do you have a  minute to spare?  My wife is having a baby, and she went to the hospital right before I started my shift. If you don't mind, I would like to use the phone at the drug store around the corner to see if I am a father yet. It should only take a minute". I said "Sure, go ahead". As I was standing there for the officer, I saw a dark figure come out of old Bramble's house, and hang a funeral wreath on the wall next to his door. I asked him "Who died?" and he said "I regret to inform you that Mr. George Bramble has just passed away".

Under Arrest - The Case of the Evil Witness

Captain Jim Scott is visiting prisoner Ben Coleman on the night before his execution for the murder of a police officer. Scott says "I'm here Coleman, what do you want?" Ben says "I'm innocent Captain". Scott says "Yeah, I know, every man in the death house says that. You killed a cop on a payroll stick-up. Why should I help you?" Ben says "I've been framed. Please Scott, you are my last chance to prove I'm innocent!" Scott pauses for a few seconds, then says "Okay, what have you got?" Ben says "I heard through the grapevine that the guy who killed the cop and stole the payroll came back to town last week. Contact Frank McGraw. You can find him at 2801 River Street. See him Scott, please". Scott goes down to the 2800 block of River Street that night. Suddenly, he hears shots and sees a sedan race quickly out of sight.

Arnold wakes up just before noon, still feeling the effects of last night at the bar. He calls for his wife Sally, and asks her if there is any coffee. She says "I'll make you some". He says "Please make it snappy, will you? I've got to throw some water on my face and get down to the store, I'm late". Sally says "Maybe you better not go to the store today, looking the way you do. Maybe you better stay home". Arnold says "Sure, just take the day off, just like that. The old man would have a fit, wouldn't he? You don't have to stick up for him because he's your father. I know what a cheapskate he is." Sally says "Darling, I don't want to argue with you about my father. Please just stay here today, you've got to. My father says that he doesn't want you working for him anymore". Arnold says "He told you that? I'm going down there".

While Peter has been working nights on a forgery case, his friend Roger Bacon has volunteered to make sure Julie got to her home safe and sound. On this particular night, as Roger was dropping her off in front of her home, there was a man waiting for her in the shadows. In his attempt to  kidnap her, Roger received a bump on his head, and Julie started screaming. The kidnapper changed his mind and retreated. For the next few days, the story was in the newspapers, and Julie began to enjoy the attention. Later, while Peter, Julie, and Roger were out having dinner at Roger's restaurant, Peter receives a phone call and leaves the table. Roger, thinking about the attempted kidnapping, began to wonder why Julie was the target. He said to Julie "You don't have a wealthy family, so it was not for ransom. Maybe it was related to the case Peter is working on".

The Adventures of Michael Shayne - The Case of the High Priced Twins

Mr. Arthur Jefferies and Miss Linda Odom walk in to Michael's office. After the introductions, Michael says "Mr. Jefferies, you didn't say very much over the phone about why you two wanted to see me". Jefferies says "Well to be brief, I have been managing the estate of Linda's uncle, Charles Odom, Last week, Mr. Odom passed away from a sudden heart attach. Linda, being his only living relative, came down here to New Orleans as soon as she could". Michael asks "Did you just arrive here tonight?" Linda says "Yes, Mr. Shane I've been away for quite a few years. In fact, I just met Mr. Jefferies tonight". Michael says "This is all very nice, but how do I fit in to this situation?" Jefferies says "Mr. Shayne, Linda and I both had every reason to believe Charles Odom was a wealthy man, but since his death, we have not been able to find any trace of his money or other holdings. Everything seems to have disappeared, along with his personal secretary, a man named Wilkerson.

I Was a Communist for the FBI - The Line is Busy

Matt Cvetic is trying to spend some time away from the Communists in an small, obscure hotel two hundred miles from his home. Suddenly, a messenger comes to his door and leaves a telegram that reads "Don't leave town. Instructions will follow." The message was sent from comrade Harry Webster, the leader of a local Communist cell. The instructions came the next morning by registered mail, they read "Rent an apartment at 224 West Globe Street, install a telephone, and wait for me there, signed Webster". Matt arrives at the address, rents the room under Webster's name, and pays the first month's rent. He then finds a phonebooth and makes a long distance call to the FBI. He tells his FBI contact everything that has happened so far. The contact says "Albatross Tool Corporation is in that town. The government just gave them a big order to manufacture parts for atomic weapons".

Philo Vance - The Left Handed Murder Case

Helen is awakened by her daughter Jan's scream, and runs to her room. Helen says "What happened? Did you have a bad dream?" Jan says "No, Mother. I saw Steve at my bedroom window. I haven't been able to sleep since we broke up, and I saw his face in the window". Helen says "I will call the police. Even if you were married to him, he had no right to do this". Jan says " the police will probably think I was dreaming, and he will deny that he was here. The police have been trying to get something on him for months, you know that". Helen says "We will talk about it in the morning. Your father has not returned from his meeting yet, I will leave him a message and stay in here with you tonight". The next morning, Helen is talking to Jan's father, David. She says "What are we going to do?". David says "I don't know, but I'm going to do something to make sure Steve doesn't bother Jan again".

Lucy is driving Dr. Hilton to the railroad station. She says "I wish you would let me go with you". The Doctor says "it's best that I go alone, Lucy. After you let me off at the station, I'd like you to go back home and wait until you hear from me". Lucy says "just as you say Doctor, but somehow I just don't like the idea of you going to Washington by yourself. That formula in your briefcase is so important". Doctor says "I'll attract much less attention that way. Lucy, you're getting all upset over nothing at all". Lucy says "I just can't help thinking of the desperate measures certain people might take to gain possession of it." The Doctor says "there is no need to worry, my formula will be in the hands of the National Defense coordinator in the morning.

In Ottawa, at the Royal Canadian Mounted Police Headquarters, Inspector John Miller is speaking to a representative of the Canadian Ministry of Justice. Miller asks "do you know a man named Igor Covenko?" The representative says "yes, may I ask why?" Miller says "Because he is sitting here in my office".  The representative says "I must warn you, Inspector. He is a very dangerous man". Miller says "he says that he was in to see you this afternoon. He's employed in the Russian Embassy and walked out of the code room with some highly secret documents. He brought these documents to the Ministry of Justice, and was told to go home and stop bothering you. Is that true?" The representative says "we told him we could engage in no negotiations with someone who is not a representative of a foreign power with whom the British government are not at war.

Hollywood Star Playhouse - Calculated Risk

Crime pays exceedingly well for Bart Willard. He is not your average crook, but could be considered a virtuoso of larceny. His latest plan involved stealing one million dollars from the Hyperion Payroll Service. For this endeavor, he needed Ames, an excellent electrician. When Willard told Ames of his plan, Ames says "it's never been done before. The Hyperion Payroll Service is built like a fortress. It would take an army to break into it". Willard replies "no, according to my plan, it will only take two men, you and I. The Hyperion normally does not have that much cash on hand, but I know it will on the 31st." Ames asks "How about the split?" Willard says "when a million dollars is involved, a man can afford to be generous. How about 50/50?" Ames says "500,000 dollars...this is crazy, The craziest thing I ever heard of, but, you might just get away with it. Count me in".

The Crime Club - Murder Rents a Room

Many years ago, the great plantation of Cliff's Edge had once been the showplace of the community. Now, it was just thousands of acres of dried out desolate land. Three days after the body of Uncle Brock Curtis had been found in the swamp with a bullet in his head, he was lying peacefully in the graveyard among his ancestors. His heirs, Kate Frazier and Kitty Boling, were sitting in the living room waiting for Lee Randall, vice president of the bank, to read Uncle Brock's last will and testament. Sheriff Bill Davies and his deputy, Tom, were also present. The will stipulated that Kate received the house and grounds. The rest of the property was divided between Kate, Kitty, and Lee Randall. Kate asks "what about Jeff?" Lee says "the will stipulates that no provisions are to be made for the worthless nephew, Jeffery Gaines, for reasons he should understand.

Boston Blackie - Fifty Hunter Street

The owner of the Manletter Company receives a letter in the mail that reads "if you want to know how to prevent the Morton bank from foreclosing on your note, have your friend Boston Blackie visit a house at 50 Hunter Street at seven o'clock this evening. Signed, a friend". Manletter shows his secretary, Miss Jean Rochelle, the message he received, and she tells him that the new Morton Bank president, John Partridge, just called in their bank notes. Manletter, not wanting to involve Blackie, goes out to try raising the needed money, while Miss Rochelle immediately calls Blackie and tells him about the message. Blackie agrees to be at the Hunter Street address at the designated time. Once there, he listens to a recording and gets knocked out. Upon waking up, he notices a bullet hole in his jacket and his gun is missing.

Cloak and Dagger - War of Words

O.S.S. Agents Harry and Pete are tasked with dropping bombshells from their airplane near a Japanese encampment in Burma. However, instead of  explosive materials, these bombshells were full of propaganda leaflets, designed by the O.S.S. to lower the morale of the Japanese soldiers. One of the leaflets read "Sons of the Rising Sun, it is better to surrender than to fight without bullets or to die of starvation". Pete says "yeah, that ought to give those lousy Japs something to think about." Pete thinks about his statement for a few seconds, then says "I'm sorry Harry, I should not have said that". Harry says "That's okay Pete, forget about it". Sometimes, the guys forgot that "Harry" was short for "Hariyoshi", Actual name was Hariyoshi Oshinabura. Although Harry thought of himself an American Japanese, Pete Bono, his partner, thought of him as a Japanese American.

Magazine Reporter Jerry Combs is given an assignment to interview Countess Athena on a new ship named "The Orient" which has just arrived at the port. After boarding the ship, Jerry finds the ship's Purser to give him directions to the Countess's suite. He knocked on her door, and she invited him in. Before the interview started, the Countess's telephone rang. She spoke with someone on the line for a few seconds. She hung up and, sounding frantic, told Jerry that he had to leave. He left her suite, feeling confused. However, he had heard her mention on the phone that she would be staying at the Hotel Metro, so he decided to visit her later that evening. When he arrives, he sees the Purser again, who takes Jerry to her room. Once there, they notice her door is open. They go inside, only to find her dead on the floor, having been shot.

The New Adventures of Sherlock Holmes - The Case of the Out of Date Murder

Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson go to Eastbourne for a much needed rest. After the third day there, Holmes went to pay a visit to his good friend, Professor Evan Whittle, curator of a nearby museum. During the after-lunch meeting, Holmes and Watson sat and listened to the Professor telling them of his recent discoveries "As I was excavating in this neighborhood, I was fortunate enough to discover a number of underground caves saturated with a heavy deposit of lime, which, as you know, has the property of rapidly mummifying any flesh human or animal deposited". Subsequently, Lady Clavering enters the room, most anxious to meet and talk with Holmes and Watson. After the introductions, she says "five years ago, my husband left me. I have had no contact with him since then. Now, I wish to be remarried, but cannot do so without having my husband declared legally dead. Would you help me Mr. Holmes?"

Lux Radio Theater - Five Graves to Cairo

Corporal John Bramble is the sole survivor of a British tank crew after Erwin Rommel and his Afrika Korps capture Tobruk in June of 1942 and pursue the British into Egypt. He stumbles across the North African desert into the town of Sidi Halfaya, where he finds the Empress of Britain, a small, isolated hotel owned by Farid. The only other employee is the French chambermaid Mouche, as the cook fled with the British, and the waiter Davos was killed the night before by German bombing. Shortly after entering the hotel, Bramble passes out from his wounds, exhaustion, and the desert heat. Farid, the hotel owner, quickly hides the unconscious Bramble from the swiftly advancing Germans, who eventually take over the hotel to use as headquarters for Field Marshal Rommel and his staff.

The Line-Up - The Cop Killer

Detective Ben Guthrie escorts the elderly witness Charlie to the viewing area at the police line-up for the identification of suspects in the murder of an undercover narcotics officer named Fisher. At the end of the session, a Police Sergeant takes Charlie to look at some mug shots, while Ben goes to see Captain Bill Walters. Bill asks "did old Charlie identify any of them?" Ben replies "no, but we will keep trying. I'll have the boys keep calling him in. Charlie can keep looking at every narcotics suspect we've got. Are you sure this old bum can identify the three men?" Bill says "Charlie says he can, but I don't know. He was under the bridge when the car pulled up and stopped". Ben asks "did he actually see the men kill Fisher?" Bill says "no, but he heard the shot, looked up, and saw the three men lift Fisher over the railing and drop him into the riverbed".

Let George Do It - Red Spots in the Snow

Herbert Judson, a famous movie director that has recently received a threating letter, hires George as a bodyguard. George is to accompany Mr. Judson at a ski resort named Snow Valley Lodge. George and Brooksie take the morning flight to Snow Valley. Upon arriving, they meet with Mr. Judson for lunch. George asks "how were you threatened, Mr. Judson?" He shows George a note slipped under his door that says "Better keep your promises if you expect to remain healthy". George asks "what promises does this allude to?" Judson replies "I have no idea". Subsequently, the waitress arrives at their table. She says "Mr. Valentine, this note was left for you with the desk clerk". He opened it. It contained an old picture of George from an advertisement, and says "If this is you, you're wasting your time. A man must pay for his sins and you can't stop it".

The FBI in Peace and War - Strangle Hold

Steven, a Police Officer, is speaking with Earl Decker at the station about his relationship with Linda Jessup, a coworker. Steven says "Linda was lying to you about Marty Jessup. Marty was actually her husband, not her brother. Now, tell me your story from the beginning". Decker says "one night, about two months ago, Linda and I were working late, taking inventory on the fur coats. When we finished, she seemed very tired that evening, so I suggested we stop for a drink before I drove her home. At the bar, I could tell there was something on her mind. She was normally laughing and friendly, but that night she was quiet, restless, and drinking more than normal. After asking her several times what was wrong, she finally admitted to taking 2,800 dollars of the store's money. She said that Marty was in trouble with some gamblers, and had to pay up".

Escape - Affair at Mandrake

British Colonel Guy Baker stood on the beach at Dunkirk, watching what was left of his battle-weary troops wait their turn to board the little boats back to England. While inspecting the captured prisoners, Colonel Baker notices one that looks identical to someone he knew before. He asks him a question, but the prisoner replies that he does not understand English. The Colonel says "Sergeant Major Holloway, shoot that man!" Holloway replies "no sir, I cannot. It's against the King's regulations to kill a prisoner of war". Colonel says "that man is a traitor, I will prove it to you. Get his service book". His name according to his German service book is Wilfred Dorf, a name not familiar to Colonel Baker. He says "I could have sworn he was a childhood friend from London named Ferdy Shotz. It seems that I must have made a mistake".

The Black Museum - A 32 Caliber Bullet

On a London street, a dark sedan with three young men inside, named Jack, Matty, and Rod drove slowly into the stream of traffic. Rod is the youngest, at only 17 years of age. Jack asks "You got everything straight, Rod?" Rod replies "sure, I'll stay in the car until you signal it's all clear, then I'll go in with you". A parking spot was found on the street near the jewelry store. Jack and Matty leave the car and start walking down the street. The jewelry store seemed very busy, so they walked past a few steps, then turned around to see Rod going into the store. Jack and Matty ran in behind him. Matty says "Rod, what's the idea? Rod says "you signaled didn't you?" Jack says "never mind, let's do it. All right everybody, this is a hold-up! Over against that wall! Everybody, these guns are loaded".

Casey, Crime Photographer - The Loaded Dice

Casey's friend Steve Drake calls Casey at 6:00 AM to tell him that he needs help. He says "will you come to my apartment right away? I live at Adeline Gardens, the Barkley House 4A. I think I'm in a bad jam. Hurry over here". Casey says "I'll be there as soon as I can throw some clothes on". A few minutes later, Casey arrives at his apartment. Steve says "thanks for coming over so quickly. I need to show you something". Steve shows Casey a bloody knife on his floor. Steve says "I found this, but I haven't touched it. Earlier, I was asleep and thought I heard my door close so I got up to investigate. My door was unlocked, but I locked it before going to sleep. Someone left the knife here, but I looked around and no one had been stabbed here, and nothing looked out of place."

Mr. Chameleon - The Case of the Blood-Stained Dollar Bills

Hubert VanDyke has found dead in his apartment. Mr. Chameleon and Detective Sergeant Dave Arnold are investigating. Dave says "He has been dead for several hours, shot between 1:00 and 2:00 AM, but one heard the shot. The other tenants are away for the weekend". Mr. Chameleon says "could it be that Silvia Southerland is in town?" Dave replies "do you think she was involved?" Chameleon says "I am almost positive. She has been constantly seen with VanDyke recently. She was seen with Archie Clyde six months ago, and he was found murdered". Dave says "Her chauffeur was found shot to death on the waterfront just last week". Chameleon says "when Archie and her chauffeur were found, they were each holding a one dollar bill in their hand. Look at what is sticking out of VanDyke's vest pocket, a blood-stained one dollar bill".

Pat Novak, For Hire - Fleet Lady

Pat was just about to close his office for the day when a short man walked in. He said "my name is Jackie Gregg, and I'm a jockey. I am supposed to be riding a horse tomorrow in the sixth race named Fleet Lady, but she has disappeared. I will pay you two hundred dollars to find her. Someone took her in a van, and I followed them down here to the waterfront. Do you think you can you find Fleet Lady?" Pat said "I don't know, who owns her?" Jackie says "a woman named Sybil Thornton. She may be mixed up in this". Pat says "why steal your own horse?" Jackie says "I don't know, maybe she is a ringer. Anyway, if you can't find her on the waterfront, maybe you can try looking around the track, ask around there". Pat agreed to it and took Jackie's two hundred dollars, but something felt phony about this job.

Inspector Thorne - The Empty Ashtray Murder Case

In the library of a palatial estate, Hortense Fremont is looking through the contents of her wall safe. She hears the door to the room open, and says "oh, it's you. Why are you looking at me so strangely?" Suddenly, she screams "you are choking me!", and falls to the floor. Later, Inspector Thorne is speaking to the late Hortense's brother, Barrett. He says "I understand that Hortense actually owned this house, but she gave it to you?" Barrett replies "no, she only allowed us to live here, my daughter Jennifer, and her husband live here with me. Hortense preferred to live in a hotel suite". Inspector Thorne says "I know it is difficult for you, Mr. Fremont, but I need to see the body and the scene of the crime". Barrett says "yes, you need to come outside with me". Thorne says "outside?" Barrett says "yes, she is along this path, just outside the gate".

The Adventures of Philip Marlowe - The Lonesome Reunion

Philip is on commercial flight from Los Angeles to Phoenix, Arizona. Miss Kaye Gordon has hired him to pick up a suitcase from her brother, Joe Gordan, and return it to her. For this task, Philip would earn two hundred dollars cash. Philip's plane lands at 3 o'clock and by 3:15, he is in Room 111 of the Granada Hotel, meeting with Joe Gordon. As he hands Marlowe the suitcase, Joe says "inside are stocks and bonds that are worthless to anyone else, as they are non-negotiable. However, to my competitors this information is priceless". Marlowe asks "what exactly is your line, Mr. Gordon?" He says "I'm a broker that likes to bet on longshots. Take the suitcase now, Mr. Marlowe, and don't let it go until you meet with my sister in Los Angeles. I'm paying you to stay away from my enemies, and they play rough...real rough, so watch your step". 

The Whistler - Legacy of Death

Ten years ago, Henry Mitchell, a biologist, married Martha Hollister, the widow of a wealthy cotton grower. Martha continued to direct the business of the cotton plantation with the aid of Henry as the overseer. She had one child from her previous marriage, a girl named Doreen. Now, Martha lies on her deathbed, growing weaker. She says to Henry "it won't be long now. There is something I must tell you about Doreen. She is 21 now, and is thinking of marriage. As she grows older, she becomes more strange each day. She must be watched over and guarded, until she reaches the age of 30. She has inherited something terrible from her father's side of the family". Henry says "what is it Martha, insanity?" Cruising on a suburban highway are Curtis Tabor, at the wheel, and Mrs. Lilly Lucas discussing the details of their plot. As they draw near to her home, Lilly tells Curtis to let her out about a block away, so her husband George will not see her getting out of the car. George and Lilly have been having some financial troubles, so George had previously suggested that they rent out one of their bedrooms to a tenant. Lilly pretends to call the newspaper to place the ad, but in fact it has already been placed earlier. Of course, Curtis comes to their front door "in response to the ad". As Lilly is supposedly showing Curtis around the home, he quietly tells her "don't forget to go to the Motor Vehicle Bureau tomorrow to get your learner's permit so I can teach you to drive. We have to make it look like an accident, Lilly". 

The Man Called X - Report from the Arctic

Dr. Kempinski, a meteorologist that has led an 18 month expedition to the Arctic, has recently arrived in Plymouth, Massachusetts, and wants to talk to Ken Thurston in Washington D.C. When the call came through, Dr. Kempinski says to Ken "when we disembarked the ship, we noticed that all of our data from 18 months in the Arctic has disappeared, and our geologist Dr. Roberts was found dead in his cabin". Ken asks "where can I find you?" Dr. Kempinski replies "I am onboard the Argonaut in the Plymouth Harbor". Ken takes a flight to Boston, rents a car, and drives to Plymouth Harbor. Once onboard the Argonaut, he meets Dr. Colwell, who tells Ken that Dr. Kempinski is onshore and will be back soon. Later, when he returns, he tells Ken that Dr. Robert's autopsy has disclosed the reason for his death.

Richard Diamond, Private Detective - The Jean Cooper Murder Case

In Central Park, a girl gets run over by a car driven by a young guy. The guy stops, and is standing over the girl, saying "I swear that I didn't do this, I loved her. Someone pushed her into the street in front of my car". A police officer is quickly at the scene. A short time later, the ambulance arrives. The officer says to the ambulance driver "you're too late". The ambulance driver says "Central Park is turning into a graveyard. The gangster Geno Scarbo just got shot full of holes a few minutes ago". A couple of days later, Richard is in his office talking to Helen over the phone when a man walks in and says "Mr. Diamond, I want to hire you. My son is being held on a manslaughter charge, but he didn't do it. The girl, Jean Cooper, was shoved in front of his car. My name is Earl Cook and my son's name is Tom. He is at the Fifth Precinct Police Station".

Barrie Craig, Confidential Investigator - A Time to Kill

Leaving Grand Central Station, Barrie was stepping into his car when he noticed a pretty woman named Cerise sitting in the passenger seat. She said "I hid in your car to escape the Dragon, a repulsive little man who followed me from Connecticut". Barrie asks "where is Mr. Repulsive now?" She says "behind us in the grey coupe, waiting for us to leave so that he can follow". Barrie says "I can fix that" as he starts to step out of the car. She says "please, no violence, just take me away from here". The grey car followed them for many blocks, then through the Holland Tunnel and into New Jersey. Barrie pulled off the highway and drove on rough side roads, with the grey coupe still behind. The Dragon started firing shots at them, with one bullet breaking the back window and hitting Barrie in the elbow. Suddenly, a loud crash is heard.

CBS Radio Mystery Theater - Key to Murder

On a cold wintery day in the living room of a four-story brownstone boarding house, owner Rachel James and her closest friend, Minerva Hall are having a much needed cup of tea and talking about the recent departure of a few of her tenants. Rachel says "Two of my tenants have left, and another, Mrs. Parker, is concerned about living here after Mr. Carson's suicide. Having three empty rooms now, and maybe another soon, I'm not sure I can make ends meet". Just then, Police Lieutenant Mike Forbes of the Homicide Division rang the doorbell. Rachel invited him in to the living room. He says "I am here investigating the death of Harold Carson". Rachel says "you mean his suicide?" He says "the fact of the matter is that it was not suicide. Harold Carson was murdered."

The Lives of Harry Lime - Three Farthings for Your Thoughts

Harry is sitting in a pub in Liverpool, when he noticed a familiar young woman arguing with the bartender. After the bartender grew annoyed and brushed her aside, she suddenly pulled out a gun from her purse and told everyone to put their hands up, and empty their pockets onto her table, one person at a time. She says "I just want your coins, you can keep the paper money". Everyone, in turn, did as they were told, including the bartender, who brought her the coins from the cash register. She gathered everything into her purse, and left the pub saying "if anyone follows me, they will be shot". A few minutes later, Harry paid his bar tab, and left. As he was walking down the street, he suddenly remembers the young woman's name. She was Helen Bartlett, Bill Bartlett's wife. Bill was just sent to prison for bank robbery.

Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar - The Gruesome Spectacle Matter

Ed Barron from Tri-state Life and Casualty Insurance of New York calls Johnny to tell him his friend, Tommy Hargrave, has died in a car accident near his summer lodge. He had a significant amount of insurance, and his wife was the beneficiary. Johnny asks "did Tommy and his wife get along alright?" Ed says "no, not really, however, I'm sure that this should just be a routine investigation. Please, just go up there and help her. The place is called Shadow Hill, near the town of Bethel, New York". When Johnny arrived at Shadow Hill, it turned out to be a beautiful summer lodge, sitting high on a hill near a private lake. On the narrow, winding road down to the lake, he found the place where a car took a corner too quickly, and rolled over on its side. Johnny stopped his car to look, when an older man jumped out from a hidden car nearby and pointed an old 30-30 rifle at him!

The Adventures of Rocky Jordan - Desert Betrayal

On a particularly hot evening in Cairo, Rocky made his way toward the Nile river lagoon, hoping to catch a cool breeze. As he drew near, he heard the muezzin call the Muslim faithful to prayer from the minaret of the mosque. Not wanting to interfere, he hid in a small passageway that led to the winding stairs of the minaret. He waited until the sounds from the street told him that the prayers were complete. Suddenly, he heard a loud scream and looked up to see the bearded muezzin in his long flowing robes tumbling headlong down the stairs. The red splotches from stab wounds were spreading on his white robe. Rocky ran to him to help stop the bleeding, when he noticed another individual wearing a robe and heavy black field boots walking down the stairs toward him saying "this does not concern you". He then pulled out a Lugar and bashed Rocky across his face. 

Mr. District Attorney - The Case of the Bank Killer

At 8:30 in the morning, before the 10:00 AM opening of the First National Bank, two robbers named Willie and Patterson encounter the bank manager, J. T. Barnes, as he is stepping out for some breakfast. They tell him to go back into the bank and call everyone out to the lobby. They announce that this is a robbery and tell everyone to line up against the wall. Willie tells the manager to tie up the employee’s hands, as Patterson goes into the vault to get the cash. About that time, the bank guard steps out of the manager's office and begins to pull his gun, but Willie shoots and kills him. The robbers run out the front door and down the street as the bank's alarm rings. A short time later, Mr. District Attorney and the police appear and start questioning Mr. Barnes. He says "they must have known all about how a bank operates. They had everything down just right".

Mr. Keen, Tracer of Lost Persons - The Case of Murder and the Bloodstained Necklace

A man named Austin is knocking at Mrs. Grace Bradley's door in the Metropolitan Hotel. A bellboy is bringing a pitcher of ice water and some glasses to her room. Mr. Austin says "is that ice water for Mrs. Bradley? I don't think she is in. I have been knocking on her door for the past five minutes, with no answer. I have an appointment with her". The bellboy says "that is strange, she just told me on the phone to bring this up right away". Austin asked "do you have a key to this room? We better check to see if she is alright". The bellboy opened the door, and they started looking around the room. Mr. Austin stopped and said "set that tray down and get ahold of the police, quickly". The bellboy asked him "why, what is the matter?" and Austin said "look behind the screen". There lay the body of Mrs. Bradley, dead, with a bullet hole through her neck.

This is Your FBI - The Desert Dictator

In the Arizona desert, two older gentleman and a girl are sitting around a campfire, watching the sun go down until dark. Doctor Harold is an archeologist, Miss Larrie, is his niece, and Mason is their guide. They are in the desert to study ancient Indian culture. The three soon hear a wolf howling somewhere nearby, as their horses start to become nervous. Mason goes out to check on them, when suddenly, a stranger appears out of the darkness holding a gun. Larrie notices the stranger's arm is bleeding. He asks her for a bandage. It seems that the stranger is an escaped bandit of a bank in Flagstaff. He stole 20 thousand dollars in a running gun battle with the police. The FBI in Flagstaff was notified and Special Agent Blake drove in to confer with Sherriff Hickman.

At 3:00 AM, on the outskirts of Houston, Texas, at the Palace Grove Modern Tourist Camp, a man crept by the all-night clerk, headed to Cabin 4. Upon entering, he woke Kitty, his girlfriend, who was asleep. She said "Jack, what are you doing here? His name was John Frederick Benson, but she calls him "Jack". He said "They were taking me to the Federal Building this afternoon, and I broke out. I made it out to the freight yards, and have been there for twelve hours. I need you to get a hacksaw to cut my handcuffs off". The next morning, Kitty buys a hacksaw and uses it to remove the handcuffs. He says "I have to find some place to lay low for a while. How about your sister Nora's farm in Kansas?" Kitty says "Allright, if that's what you want". Three weeks later, Jack is working on the farm, but he getting very bored and restless. 

Jeff Regan, Investigator - The Prodigal Daughter

Jeff was called in to Mr. Lyon's office to meet the client, Mr. Carter, who was telling them about his daughter, Patrice. Carter says "she left about five years ago and, since then, I have never heard from her. I can understand, in a way, because ever since her mother died I sent her away to boarding schools. I haven't been the best companion for her, but I want her back Mr. Regan". Jeff says "I can see how you feel". Carter says "I have offered Mr. Lyon a two thousand dollar fee if he can find my daughter. Let me know when you find anything". When Carter leaves, Lyon hands Jeff a train ticket to New Orleans and says "she had a boyfriend next door, but he hasn't seen her in a year. She has another boyfriend in New Orleans and went to see him there. I found that out with two phone calls. Go to New Orleans and bring her back".

The Epic Casebook - Murder in the Bag

Sergeant Barnes of the Dewhurst Police is relaying the facts of the case to Inspector Carr. He says "A farmer named Tom Ferguson was shot last night when he was returning from a party in the company of a Mr. Flynn, who called for an ambulance. However, Ferguson was deceased by the time the ambulance arrived at the hospital. He lived at Greystone Farm, along with Vera Hammond. a widow, and her 20 year old son, Robert. Vera was a Ferguson before she married. Tom Ferguson was her nephew. The farm was originally owned by Vera's brother, but when he died, Tom inherited it". Inspector Carr asks "Did Tom have a girlfriend?" Barnes says "yes, he was engaged to Evelyn Todd, from a neighboring farm. Once they were married, they planned to live at Greystone, so Vera Hammond and Robert would have had to move out.

Screen Guild Theater - The Maltese Falcon

A young lady named Miss Wonderly walks into the offices of Spade and Archer, Private Detectives. Miss Wonderly had just told Sam Spade why she needed to employ his services, when Miles Archer enters the room. Sam says "Miss Wonderly just told me her sister Corrine ran away with a guy named Floyd Thursby, and they are here in San Francisco. She wants Corrine away from Thursby because she believes he is dangerous. Miss Wonderly says that has a meeting with Thursby after 8 o'clock tonight in her hotel lobby. Archer agrees to be there to watch over her. Later that night, Police Lieutenant Duffy calls Sam and tells him that his partner Archer has been found in an alley, shot through the heart. 

The Adventures of Sam Spade - The Sinister Siren Caper

A man named Donald Stryker pays a visit to Sam. He tells Sam that a somewhat reliable source has told him that he is a marked man. Stryker tells Sam that a wild-eyed man named George Strutt came to his door last night, and showed him a picture of a pretty girl cut out from a newspaper, with no name or identification. He said "you can still save yourself. Beware the siren song she sings. You are number six, I am five, and the four before us are doomed. Beware of this sinister, redhaired handmaiden of the dark angel". Sam says "Mr. Stryker, are you sure this Strutt isn't some harmless escapee from the local sanitarium?" Stryker says "he isn't, I made some phone calls this morning, he is a quasi-successful cigar salesman downtown, with an apartment on Leavenworth Street. Please, Mr. Spade, I must get to the bottom of this issue".

The New Adventures of Nero Wolfe - The Bashful Body

Mr. Wolfe is generally not too fond of traveling anywhere, but when he gets a call from Mr. Zabro saying that he has a new shipment orchids in his flower shop, he changes his mind. Shortly after the phone call, Mr. Hansen appears at Zabro's Flower Shop wanting his money. Hansen says "I don't like the way you have been avoiding me, Zabro. You have 24 hours to pay me what you owe, or I will be the owner of this flower shop". Later, Hansen's niece, Enid, pays a visit. Hansen says "he is not here, John Arndt. His job is to take care of my orchids. I suppose he believes when he marries you, he won't need a job anymore, since you will inherit my estate. I have instructed my lawyers to add a codicil to my will to say that all my money goes to you, but only if you do not marry John Arndt now or in the future. I will sign that codicil as soon as it is ready".

Box 13 - The Better Man

Dan Holiday accepts a dinner invitation from the wealthy Mr. Charles Winthrop. After the dinner, Mr. Winthrop has a proposition for Dan. He says "somewhere in this city I have hidden a packet containing 100 one thousand dollar bills. There will be three other individuals also looking for the money. At midnight tonight, I will drop four identical letters in the mailbox. Each will contain the first clue of where to find the money. Finding the first clue will lead you to the second clue, and the second will lead you to the third, and so on. The person who finds the money will have the choice of keeping it, or donating it to charity. If he chooses to donate it, I will add another one hundred thousand dollars to the donation." At first, Dan is hesitant to play this rich man's game, but Winthrop says "your first clue will arrive in the morning, you can then decide to participate or not."  

Bold Venture - The Kuan Yin Statue

Slate Shannon has a passenger on his boat named Mi Long, who Sam Chu desperately wanted to see. When they arrived in Havana, they are met by two armed men named Jeffery and Micky. Jeffery says that they are looking for the Kuan Yin statue that Mi Long brought with her from China. She says that she has brought no statue, only a suitcase of clothes. Jeffery then says it must be somewhere on the boat. Micky knocks Shannon out, and they start searching. Having no success, Jeffery grabs Mi Long, and she slaps him. He becomes angry and shoots her. Back at Shannon's Place, Saylor and King Moses are waiting for Slate and Mi Long, but they have not returned.

Pursuit - Pursuit in the North Sea

Inspector Black, while at the Regents Bar, catches a vendor with a case of American made nylon stockings, worth about 500 pounds on the black market. Unfortunately, the source of these goods was not caught. The next morning, Inspector Black is in to the Home Secretary's office. He says "the Prime Minister is very concerned and takes a serious view of the violations of our Custom Laws. Smuggling has become big business, so much, in fact, that it is starting to have an effect on the economy. Something must be done."  The Inspector says "well sir, I hope you understand what we are up against. We know there is one large gang of smugglers with dozens of subsidiary gangs. They use planes piloted by ex-combat airmen, and torpedo boats to bring in the goods. We will have to have our own planes and boats to combat them."

The Amazing Mr. Malone - Seek and Ye Shall Find

Larry Barker is meeting with Private Investigator Frank Polanski. Barker shows Polanski a picture of Sheila Barker, his wife, and says "I want her followed, day and night, and I want to know everyone she sees". Polanski says "I can do the job, but I need a retainer". Barker says "no retainer, I only pay for results". Polanski says "then we are both wasting our time. You will have to get someone else". The next day, Polanski sees Sheila Barker trying to hail a taxi. He walks up to her and says "I've got some information for you Sheila". She says "how do you know my name?" He says "I know a lot about you Sheila, and for some cash I will let you know". She says "you keep your information, and I'll keep my money". He says "alright, your husband came to see me yesterday. He is checking up on you". When Sheila arrives home, she makes a call to John J. Malone.

A Life in Your Hands - The Dr. Alanby Case

Jonathan Kegg's secretary, Miss Rogers, opens a letter from the Alumni Secretary of the University. He wants Jonathan to come for visit. Meanwhile, at the same university, Dr. Alanby and Professor Barlow are listening to Barlow's recording of Alanby's speech about his discovery of the Kalara Temple in the Yucatan, and his future plans to lead an expedition back to recover a vast treasure. Shortly after the tape ends, a visitor named Rocky Martin pays a visit to Dr. Alanby, and tells him he represents some people who will finance his Yucatan trip for a percentage of the treasure. Dr. Alanby says "that is ridiculous, get out of here". It seems that Barlow has given a transcript of the speech to the newspaper. Later, the campus switchboard operator tries to get in touch with Dr. Alanby in his room, but she can get no response from him.

Calling All Cars - Murder for Insurance

At 3 o'clock in the morning, four men on a duck hunting trip are traveling on the highway toward Topanga Canyon. Suddenly, a car coming the opposite direction stops in the middle of the road, blocking their way. The hunters watch as a man steps out of the car yelling "please help, robbery,  they shot my wife!" The hunters care for them as best as they can, then take them to the hospital in Santa Monica. The wife dies in route, but the husband is taken to surgery to remove a bullet from his shoulder. Later, Deputy Sherriff Walter Hunter is questioning the young husband. He says "we were on the highway when a Chrysler Roadster ran us off the road. Two guys got out of the car and robbed us. As they started to leave, my wife says to one of them -- isn't your last name Woods? That's when the shooting started". 

Carter Brown Mysteries - The Lady was Lethal

Private Investigator Johnny Eaton and Police Lieutenant Jorgenson are in the city morgue to identify Hank Williams, Eaton's former partner in their Private Investigation business. Hank had been killed because he had discovered "something big", meaning some important information that was very valuable to someone. The problem was that Hank normally kept the information to himself, rarely writing anything down on paper. When Eaton got back to their office, he searched for anything that could help him discover what Hank was working on, but it was to no avail. He then decided it was time for a drink. He found a dive bar and ordered one. Soon a stranger sits down next to him and asks "how much?" Eaton says "how much for what?" The stranger says "how much for the information your partner had. Name your price."

The Big Story - The Hunch that Paid Off

Bill Griffith, a reporter for the Youngstown Vindicator, a newspaper based in Ohio, is being sent by his boss to the Hodge Mansion. It seems Mr. Clive Hodge, the mining millionaire, has shot and killed his wife, Mrs. Amy Hodge. The police are currently at the scene. The boss says "when you arrive, have the secretary show you into the library. There, you will see Detective Bromley and a couple of his men listening to Mr. Hodge trying to explain what happened". After Bill arrives, Mr. Hodge says to the Detective "after dinner, Amy was resting on the loveseat. She hadn't been feeling well." Bromley asks "how did you come to have a shotgun in the library, Mr. Hodge?" He replies "we were nearly robbed the night before, and I carried it around for protection. Amy fell asleep, so I prodded her with the gun to wake her up, never thinking the gun would go off."

The Clock - Nicky

Mrs. Nicky Kane is at a funeral parlor looking at coffins. She tells the mortician that she wants to buy one for her husband, but with a few stipulations. She does not want the coffin to be sealed shut. It should have some air holes cut in the lid.  Also, her husband is not to be embalmed, just placed into the coffin as he is. She says that she will be responsible for burying him. The owner asks "when should we call for your husband's body?". She says "next Tuesday at midnight". He says "but that is five days from now". She says "yes, he won't be dead until then". The mortician then says "where should we call for his body?"  She says "the state prison, he is scheduled to be executed in the electric chair for murder".

The Man From Homicide - The Wee Willie Baines Case

Lieutenant Lou Dana and Sergeant Dave are at the morgue, looking a the latest victim of a gunshot to the head, "Wee" Willie Baines. Dave says "a couple of 18 year old kids found him in the park tonight about 11:00 PM. The time of death was about 7:00 PM". Lou asks Dave "who was he?" Dave says "forty years ago he was born in the slums. Ten years later, he was a juvenile delinquent. Since then, he was involved in petty larceny and bookmaking. Yesterday the crime investigating committee had him on a subpoena." Dana asks "what were they going to ask him about?" Dave says "Captain Kowalski tried to check on that. It seems that one of the men on the Governor's staff put his name on the list. His name is Skyler". Dana pays a visit to Skyler's home. While he was talking to Mrs. Skyler at the door, two shots rang out from his bedroom.

Crime and Peter Chambers - Nursemaid to Three Beautiful Women

Peter is being paid to take care of the three finalists in the Miss Universe Beauty Contest. Making the arrangements is Miss Matilda Cragg, who is representing Mr. Byron Thorndyke, of the Thorndyke Modeling Agency. The winner will receive 50 thousand dollars in cash and a Hollywood contract. Mr. Thorndyke will be the sole judge, and I am here as the chaperone for the young ladies. They will stay overnight at a lovely house on Sutton Place. Mr. Chambers, you are to be there at midnight, because the money will arrive to Mr. Thorndyke just before midnight. You will guard the cash until it is safely deposited in the winner's bank. Later, at midnight, Peter arrives at the Sutton Place address and is met by Lieutenant Louie Parker at the door. He says "I don't think the contest will continue, because Mr. Thorndyke has been murdered".
