The Crime Club - Mr. Smith's Hat

Inspector Christopher McKee was in his office at the Center Street Police Headquarters, when the telephone rings. A strange man tells him he can find a corpse at 1142 West 16th Street, Gilbert Shannon's apartment, and hangs up the phone. A few seconds later, a young woman named Julie calls and tells the Inspector that she just found her father, Gilbert Shannon, dead on the floor of his apartment at the same address. The Inspector then tells his deputy to call the medical examiner and says that he is going to that apartment himself. When he arrives, he inspects the crime scene, and tells Julie that her father was killed by blunt force trauma, and the murderer was someone known to him.
