Mr. Walter Merritt, Attorney, is in the backseat of a taxicab nearing his destination, Miss Edna Fergo's home. He says "Alright driver, I'll get out here". The driver asks him "Mister, you sure this is the place you want?" Merritt says "It's 1504 Avenue L isn't it?" Driver says "Oh it's the house number you gave me. I only meant, uh, well a gent like you in this kind of neighborhood? Well, I'm sorry I said ...." Merritt says "That's all right. Not all a man's clients can afford Park Avenue". Merritt pays the driver, and says "Well, here you are. Keep the change". Driver says "Oh, thank you mister, thanks a lot". Merritt makes his way to the front door and rings the doorbell. Edna says "Yeah, who is it?" He says "Mr. Merritt, Walter Merritt. I spoke with you on the phone". Edna opens the door and says "I wasn't sure it was you". Merritt says "Who did you expect?" Edna says "A bill collector, process server, a lawyer...." Merritt says "I'm a lawyer". She says "Come in, this way. Alright, grab yourself a chair. You drink rye?" He says "Not this time of morning, you go ahead". She says "I can use one. Last night was a bit rugged, and then hearing from you how Alex kicked off and all. Poor Alex, that was a shock to me all right". Merritt says "Yes, it must have been". Edna asks "Heart disease you said?" Merritt says "That's right, inoperative". She says "Poor Alex. But I don't guess you came over here to exchange condolences". Merritt says "No". She asks "For what, then?" He says "According to my information, you were still married to the late Mr. Alexander in 1937. He didn't obtain a divorce until some four years later. You weren't represented in that action were you?" She says "No, some character sent me a letter saying we were split. I didn't receive it for about six months". Merritt says "You knew he remarried since that time?" She says "I heard somewhere. Yeah, I also heard he made himself a bundle of money". Merritt says "It's quite a bundle". She says "Well, he can't take it with him". Merritt says "No, he can't. That's why I'm here".
