Early afternoon, in the Blue Note Cafe. Ethelbert, the head bartender, is engaged in conversation with Archie, a rather weak-looking young man and Mildred, a very good-looking young woman. When the street door opens, Casey and Miss Anne Williams enter. Ethelbert says "Wow, look who's here". Casey and Anne say "Hi Ethelbert" He says "Hi Casey and Miss Williams". Casey sees Archie and says "Huh? Doggone. How are you, Archie?" He says "Fine. And you?" Casey says "I feel better when spring comes". The good looking young woman says "Don't you remember me, Casey?" He says "Mildred". She says "Hello". Casey says "Well, what do you know? Say you look like a million in that mink coat". Ethelbert says "I gather you know these folks, Casey". He says "I've known Archie ever since he was a punk in grammar school, Ethelbert, and Miss Sells, here .... ". Mildred says "Our acquaintance goes back only a few years to the Warren affair". Casey says "Yeah. Oh, excuse me, Miss Anne Williams, Miss Mildred Sells". Anne says "Hello, Miss Sells". Mildred says "How do you do?" Casey says "And Archie Purcell". He says "A pleasure, Miss Williams". Casey says "You know Archie's father, Annie. He's one of our favorite cops". Anne says "Not Lieutenant Purcell?" Archie says "He's my old man". Anne says "Well, we have a great admiration for your father". Archie says "He's quite a guy". Casey says "They don't come any better". Archie says "Well, Miss Sells and I must be running along. We have a date". Mildred says "Yes. It was nice meeting you, Miss Williams. See you again, Casey". He says" That goes double". Archie says "Well, see all of you again. They all say "Bye, So long". Ethelbert says "There goes one beautiful babe, Casey. He says "Yeah, she's dynamite, too. I mean that literally. You know, she's a stooge for old Iron Hat, Tim Lansing". Anne says "The political leader?" Casey says "Yes, sir. The boss. The big crook under the old-fashioned derby who protects professional gambling in this mid-town section".

In an elegant suite of the Coronet Hotel on Fifth Avenue, Lois Cunningham is weeping and crying out to her sister, Helene Cunningham. Lois says "Helene, I'm not a baby. It's only ten o'clock , and I have a right to go out and enjoy myself, haven't I?" Helene says "No you haven't, Lois, not if you're going to play bridge for money". Lois says "But that's ridiculous. You do it yourself all the time. Last month you paid the rent here with the money you made playing bridge. You're always next door playing with the Smalley's, and just because they asked me to a couple of parties". Helene says "You're too young for that sort of thing. You're only twenty, Lois. Since Dad and Mother died, I've had to look after you, and I intend to go on doing it whether you like it or not". Lois says "But the Smalley's have been so kind to us". Helene says "I didn't say they weren't, I simply said that I won't have you playing cards for money". At that moment, the doorbell rings. Helene says "I'll answer that, and don't think I've finished with you, I haven't". Lois says "It may be Edgar". Helene says "I hope it's Edgar. The sooner you marry him, the better I'll be pleased. Helene opens the door and says "Yes? Oh, hello there". Suddenly, two shots rang out! Lois says "What's that? Helene! Helene what happened?" Lois screams! Meanwhile, Mr. Chameleon and Detective Dave Arnold are strolling along Fifth Avenue. They suddenly stop, and Dave says "Mr. Chameleon, do you see what I see?" Mr. Chameleon says "I see a crowd and two police cars in front of the Coronet Hotel. Add them all together and what do they spell, Dave?" He says "Trouble". Mr. Chameleon says "Yes, come on". As they rush to the scene, Mr. Chameleon says "Oh, there's Captain Robbins. He must be on the job. Hello, Captain. What's up?" Captain says "Plenty. A girl named Helene Cunningham, who lives here with her sister, was murdered an hour ago. She was shot through the heart by someone who rang her doorbell". Mr. Chameleon asks "Was she alone at the time?" Captain says "Her sister, Lois, was in the bedroom. She didn't see the murderer but she claims it must have been someone Helene knew because she greeted them as if she knew them".

Marlowe was at the Beverly Room Cocktail Lounge, waiting on his new client, Eddie Mellette. He showed up about twenty minutes late. Eddie sat down, took off his hat, and shook hands all in one quick motion. Marlowe knew he was either in trouble, in a hurry, or both. Eddie says "Marlowe, this is business. You got to find a nut who's been following me for the last couple of days. He's big. A lot of muscle under a t-shirt and a kind of jacket like the Dodgers wear when their warming up. You know what I mean? I can't figure out what this bird's after. All the time, he's hanging around. Oh, and if I go for him, he runs. So, what I want you to do is get next to him and the answer to this tag. Here, a hundred bucks. Enough, Phil?" Marlowe says "That's enough. You know, Eddie, the law might do this for you for free". Eddie says "For John Doe they might, but Eddie Mellette's another story, Marlowe. You know what I mean? Today, I got a respectable business, war surplus. But the cops, they only remember me as a guy who once did time for being careless with other people's dough". Marlowe says "Yeah". Eddie says "And I'm in a hurry. My two partners, Lou Tripp and Ruth Dunn. She's also my girl. They're coming back to town tonight. I'd like to spend some time with both of them without interruption". Marlowe says "What do you mean girl, Eddie? You and that pretty wife, I've heard about, split up?" Eddie says "Yeah, I'm suing for divorce right now. Tina and I never should have been, Marlowe. I need someone who's softer, more honest, and understanding. Know what I mean? Ruth has a good head for business, and is a sweet kid at the same time. Here's a letter I got from her today. She and Lou were both in Mexico City. It's got all the dope on the deal were working on, plus the fact she's worrying about me". Marlowe says "That should bring us right back to the t-shirt, remember. Where do I start, Eddie?" He says "At the only place I know of, Marlowe. Yesterday I kind of turned the tables on this guy. I trailed him down to the corner of Wilshire and Western, but he got away in the middle of a lot of traffic. I figured from his build and t-shirt, he could work on one of these health clubs around. If you find out then come to my place on Hoover before eight o'clock".

A thin, bespectacled little man named Wilson paces nervously up and down the floor of his office, up and down, back and forth. He runs his hands nervously through his hair. Time after time he cleans his glasses, lights cigarette upon cigarette. The tension increases with every passing moment. This man is fighting against time. With him, every second counts, every minute becomes an eternity. Yes, this man is up against a blank wall. Suddenly he stops and in sheer desperation he almost screams at the man facing him. Wilson says "I can't go on any longer. I won't. There's a limit to everything. I've come to the end of my rope". Griskin says "You made a deal with me, Wilson. So far you've done very well. But you can't back down now. It's too late". Wilson says "I've done everything you assigned to me. But don't you understand? It's tearing me to pieces. It's wrecking my nerves. I can't eat, I can't sleep". Griskin says "It's too late to quit, Wilson. You've gone this far and I warn you, you can't pull out now". Wilson says "Murder, murder, death. How long do you think I can go on doing such things? How long?" Griskin says "You'll go on and on until we're through with you". Wilson says "I won't". Griskin says "Yes you will. Furthermore, you'll like it or .... well, you know what'll happen". Wilson asks "What do you mean?" Griskin says "You know what I mean, Wilson. If you think you can walk out on me after all you've done, considering what you know about everything here, well you've got another thing coming". Wilson says "But, I'm afraid". Griskin asks "Afraid of what?" Wilson says "I'm afraid I'll lose my mind. For the last six nights now I haven't been able to close my eyes. All I can see is poor Gregory Hellman". Griskin says "Hellman?" Wilson says "Yes, all I can see is his body buried in the cellar. Two weeks ago it was John Henderson, dying in agony. Look Griskin, you've got to let up on me, for a while at least, or I'll crack up". Griskin says "Alright, Wilson. alright. We'll give you a rest". Wilson says "You will?" Griskin says "Yes. After this one". Wilson says "What? Which one?" Griskin says "Olivia Martin. If you plan it so that Olivia Martin takes the rap for everything, then I see no reason why you can't have a rest from all this". Wilson says All right, Griskin. I'll do my best".

Ken Thurstan's flight from Dublin lands safely in New York. As he exits the plane, he is met by Pagon, who says "Hi Mr. Thurstan, what a happy coincidence, eh? Imagine meeting you here". Ken says "Yeah, just imagine. How did you get hold of my schedule?" Pagon says "Well, I just accidentally happened to see the cablegram on Miss Brook's desk. Well, I thought I would welcome to New York, Mr. Thurstan. Here, let me carry your bag". Ken says "No thanks. And no, I won't loan you a hundred bucks. So long". Pagon says "Wait a minute, Mr. Thurstan, How could you even think that I only came out here to borrow money? Besides, I need three hundred". Ken says "Really broke, eh?" Pagon says "Oh, flat as a flounder. I've only got fifty or sixty bucks left, and of course, that's nothing". Ken says "Nothing? Is inflation that bad? And I've only been away a week". Pagon says "How about it, Mr. Thurstan? Eh, after all, it's only money". Ken, seeing someone he recognizes, says "Hold it, Pagon" He says "Huh? You mean that guy there by the guard rail?" Ken says "Yes. He looks like um...by George, it is! Pedro Andolero! Hey Pedro!" Pagon says "Look, He's running away". Ken says "Yeah. Now, what the devil?" Pagon says "He crawled under that guardrail. Now, he's on the ramp". Ken says "I can't understand what he's.... Pedro, that plane!" Pagon says "He don't see!" Ken says "Pedro, look out!" Pagon says "Oh, Mr. Thurstan!" Ken says "He ran straight into that propeller!" Sometime later, at the hospital, the Chief says "Well, what I did was make arrangements at the receiving desk, Ken, and an intern is bringing the contents of his pockets up from the morgue". Ken says "Okay, Chief". He says "We can wait in here". Ken says "I called police headquarters. They've got nothing on him". Chief says "I still can't understand why he ran away from you". Ken says "Nor can I, Chief. I hadn't seen or heard of Pedro since that sabotage case in Panama in 1944". Chief says "He was mixed up in that, wasn't he?" Ken says "Probably. He was dismissed for lack of evidence, though. So, that certainly couldn't be the reason he was terrified enough to run into a plane propeller".

Frank Cannelli, Captain in Command of the 21st Precinct, started his day tour at 8:35 AM when Sector Car 5 came by his house to take him to the East River Drive near 61st Street. A gravel barge had sunk in the river on the previous day and salvage operations to clear the channel had begun that morning. Cannelli had anticipated that the work would create a curious attraction and result in a serious traffic problem along the East River Drive. As Patrolman Dylan, the operator of Sector Car 5, drove Cannelli to inspect this condition, He saw in the block ahead a large moving van parked at the curb in front of 181 Sutton Place North, one of a row of large and elegant residences which had in recent years been converted into multiple dwellings of medium-sized expensive apartments. Also parked there were two departmental vehicles, Sector Car 2 and the Sergeant's car. Cannelli says "Dylan, pull into the curb". As he did, Cannelli could see Sergeant Waters standing on the sidewalk talking to an attractive and well-dressed woman. Four moving men were several feet away, engaged in conversation. Cannelli says "Alright, stay with the car, Dylan". He says "Yes, sir". Waters says "Hello, Captain". Cannelli asks "What's the trouble here Sergeant?" Waters says "Mrs. Linwick, this is Captain Cannelli, commanding officer of the 21st Precinct". She says "How do you do?" Cannelli says "Mrs. Linwick". Canelli asks "What is it Sergeant?" Mrs. Linwick says "I just want my furniture, that's all. That's what I had these men come for, to get my furniture. They're standing around and I have to pay them while they stand around. It is by the hour, you know". Cannelli asks "Well, why can't she get her furniture?" Mrs. Linwick says "That's exactly what I'd like to know". Waters says "Well Captain, seems like the super won't let her up in the building. He won't let her into the apartment". Cannelli asks "Why not?" Waters says "The super says she separated from her husband about three weeks ago. He says he's still living in the building. The super said he's got no right to let her go in there without permission from the husband".

Lieutenant Levinson calls Richard at his office. Richard says "Well, Lieutenant Levinson, what's the matter with you? Did someone swipe one of your ulcers?" Levinson says "Now stop that. I wouldn't call you unless it was something important". Richard says "I know. You're losing Sergeant Otis to Barnum and Bailey?" Levinson says "You stop that. Diamond, I have an important message for you, so for the sake of my sour stomach, act like a normal human being for five minutes". Richard says "Ah, sure to be a strain, but go ahead". Levinson says "Bill Garrett wants to see you". Richard says "Bill Garrett?" Levinson says "Yes. He goes to the electric chair tonight at 8 o'clock, and he wants to see you. It's his last request. Will you see him?" Richard says "All right, sure". Levinson says "I'll call the warden and tell him you'll be up". Richard says "You be sure and put in the call. If Otis does it, the warden will get so confused, they'll turn Garrett loose and toast me". Later, Richard appeared at Garrett's cell in Sing sing Prison. Richard says "Hello, Garrett". He says "Hello, Diamond. I'm glad you got here". Richard says "Wouldn't miss it". Garrett says "Neither would I unless I could help it". Richard says "Look, Garrett, I'm busy and you're on a tight schedule. Now, what's on your mind?" Garrett says "Well, it's like this, Rick". Richard says "The name's Diamond". Garrett says "Okay. I know you hate guys like me, but I ain't ashamed of what I've done. That's the way I live. That's the way I'm gonna go out". Richard says "If you want someone to listen to you feel sorry for yourself, he'll be along in a few minutes before eight". Garrett says "Maybe I better forget it. You ain't got no use for nothing". Richard says "I got use for everything that doesn't include guys like you. There's no middle with me, Garrett. It's got to be right or wrong". Garrett says "And right keeps you out of trouble, huh?" Richard says "Well, not always, but it helps people to live together". Garrett says "Okay. I guess you know I got a kid brother. He's going on seventeen, and it looks like the family's gonna have another guy for you to hate". Richard asks "What do you want me to do?" Garrett says "He thinks I'm a big shot. I want you to convince him that I'm not".

Barrie was having a meal at Willie's Wagon, if you could call it a meal. Willie says "What would you call it, Mr. Craig?" Barrie says "Penance". Willie says "Big joke. Something wrong with the hamburger?" Barrie says "Well, it's been fatally wounded, Willie. Next time you might wait till it dies before serving it". Willie says "I can remember a time when private dicks could hardly read, let alone make witty remarks". Barrie says "Sorry". Willie says "Have a cup of coffee". Barrie says "Oh, I'm not that sorry". Willie says "There's nothing wrong with the coffee". Barrie says "Well, there's nothing wrong with sulfuric acid either, but I'll hold on to my stomach lining for a while longer if you don't mind". Willie says "What's so special about your stomach?" Barrie says "It's attached to me". Willie says "Ah, you're getting sentimental. Which reminds me, there was a guy in here looking for you about an hour ago. Oh, nervous little punk. I gave him your office address". Barrie says "He must have missed me an hour ago. I was on my way here. How could you tell he was nervous?" Willie says "He couldn't keep his hand from trembling. The one that was holding the gun". Willie didn't have much more information to offer, other than explaining that this potential client was clutching the gun in his pocket. Barrie walks back to his office building, and talks to Jake, the elevator operator. Jake asks "Going up?" Barrie says "Where else could I go from the ground floor?" Jake says "I guess you're going up. Other fellow went up, too". Barrie asks "Which other fellow? Jake says "The one looking for you". Barrie says "Well, thanks for letting me in on it. Was he a small, nervous man?" Jake says "Yep". Barrie asks "Did he say he'd wait for me in the office?" Jake says "Yeah. He ain't come down either". Barrie says "Which means he's still up there, unless he used the back stairs". Jake says "Yeah". Barrie says "He was carrying a gun, wasn't he?" Jake says "Oh, you heard about him?" Barrie says "From Willie. He tried to get a hold of me at the wagon". Jake asks "Did that fellow drink any of Willie's coffee?" Barrie says "I don't know". Jake says "You better hurry, if he did, he's going to be needing major surgery".

David Williams, a young driver, is pacing his living room floor, waiting for his father, Grant Williams, to come home. Shortly after his father arrives home, David says "Dad?" Mr. Williams says "David, what are you doing up at this hour?" David says "I didn't hear you come in. I thought you'd never get home. Where have you been?" Mr. Williams says "Well, now do I have to start answering to you for my whereabouts?" David says "I'm sorry, Dad". Mr. Williams says "Well, for your information, I was working correcting term papers. It wasn't that I.... David, I'm very tired". David asks "You all right, Dad? You look like you had an attack or something". Mr. Williams says "Well, don't be silly. I said I was tired. What's wrong with you? You've been drinking". David says "Yes. I wish I hadn't, but I did". Mr. Williams says "Oh, okay, son. Take it easy. Now, whatever it is, we'll work it out. Where's your car?" David says "I left it parked on the street". Mr. Williams says "Well, you better put it away. There's no sense in leaving it out in this rain". David says "Dad, I've got to talk to you. It's about the car". Mr. Williams says "What about the car?" David says "I didn't know what to do. I hit the panic button. I ran". Mr. Williams asks "What did you hit?" David says "Someone, a man, I'm pretty sure down near the railroad. You know, where the big curve comes around by the station opposite Franny's place. I think it was one of those old winos that hang around there. Dad, I swear I never saw him with all that rain and the fog". Mr. Williams asks "Was there anyone else around?" David says "I didn't see anyone. I should have stopped, but all I could think of was that I'd been drinking and if anything happened, it would kill Mom. Before I knew it, I was running away. I'm scared. I guess I ought to go to the police". Mr. Williams asks "Does your mother know about this?" David says "No". Mr. Williams says "Okay. When did it happen?" David says "At 2:00 o'clock this morning". Mr. Williams says "Okay, now go into the kitchen and wait for me. And no matter what, don't let your mother get involved". David asks "Where are you going?" Mr. Williams says "I'm going to have a look at your car". David asks "What are you going to do?" Mr. Williams says "I'm not sure yet, but just maybe there's a way to get off the spot".

Wealthy tourists have always been attracted by the romance of India and the beautiful Taj Mahal. And Harry Lime has always been attracted by the romance of beautiful and wealthy tourists. With this idea in mind, Harry took the train from New Delhi to Agra, which is the ancient capital city of India where the Taj Mahal is located. Enroute, Harry was listening politely to the interminable prattle of a lady named Mrs. Hayley, a missionary's wife, with whom he shared his compartment. Mrs. Hayley says "I suppose you're going to Agra to see the Taj Mahal, Mr. Lime". He says "Yes, among other things, Mrs. Hayley". She says "I could tell you were a cultured gentleman the first moment I laid eyes on you, Mr. Lime. But all too many people see the beauties of India and never give a thought to the poor, benighted people. We must think of them, Mr. Lime. Don't you agree?" Harry says "Oh, yes, absolutely". She says "My husband is the Reverend Mr. Hayley, you know. He's the head of the mission at Nanda Devi. He's given his whole life to these poor natives". Harry says "That's very nice". Mrs. Hayley says "We have an orphanage there, you know, one of the finest. A terrible thing happened. Such a terrible thing. We had a fire just last week. Here, look at these newspaper clippings". Harry reads "Orphanage at Nanda Devi destroyed by fire, medical aid rushed to mission". He says "Oh, I'm very sorry, Mrs. Hayley". She says "That picture, that's my husband, Mr. Hayley, standing there among those poor little Indian children. If I don't raise the money, he'll be heartbroken". Harry says "The money?" Mrs. Hayley says "Yes, yes, that's why I'm going to Agra. We need 3,000 pounds right away to cover the emergency. When we heard that Lady Edith Bannon Murdoch was in Agra, we decided to approach her. She's very wealthy and her family had always helped the mission. I'm sure her heart will be moved by the plight of these poor orphans. However, I just dread speaking to her. I'm not well, you know, and with the shock of the fire and everything". Harry says "Now, Mrs. Hayley, this is only a suggestion, but I was wondering if it might be helpful if someone else approached Lady Edith on behalf of the mission. Myself, for instance". Mrs. Hayley says "You? Well, that's awfully kind of you, Mr. Lime".

Rocky's Tambourine Cafe attracts all sorts of people, but this kind of man was new to Rocky. He was tall and muscular with piercing dark eyes. He had black hair, a thin beard, and sunbaked skin that turned light below the eyes. In spite of his size, his hands were delicate and he might have been graceful, except for the ill-fitting white robe and his complete uncertainty. Rocky watched him as he came back to where he was wiping some glasses behind the bar. The man says "My name is Jerod. I would work for you some". Rocky says "I got all the help I need, sorry". Jerod says "I need money. I will work very hard for only a few francs". Rocky says "They don't pay in francs around Cairo. Where are you from, anyway?" Jerod says "If I do good work you do not care". Rocky says "You ought to be a good caravan driver. Why don't you look up Ali Ben down at the camel stalls". Jerod says "I do not want to drive camels. I would work hard for you. Scrub floors, sweep, with this broom I will show you". Rocky says "Stay on the other side of the bar. I said nothing doing". Jerod says "I clean up very good, you would see". Rocky says "Cut it will you? Look out with that broom". Jerod says "I am most sorry". Rocky says "I'll bet you are. That was expensive liquor. It will cost you plenty". Jerod says "Oh, but there is no money, so now, you see, I have to work for you. Is that not so, sire?" Rocky says "Yeah alright, get busy, Jarod". There was nothing to do but let him work it out. Everything was new to him, but he was tireless. By night, he had the place spotless. The Cairo streets had him confused, so Rocky helped him to an address in the Sharia el Kama. Jerod was back bright and early the next day, hard at work. That evening, Rocky told him it worked off his debt, and gave him a few piasters. He thanked Rocky and hurried away. A few minutes later, three men wearing blue robes and black veils appeared at the door. Rocky says "Alright, fun's over, take the masquerade someplace else". One of them says "Let us know where he is". Rocky says "We'll talk when you take off the disguises". The same one says "Where is the one who calls himself Jerod?"

Johnny gets a call from Barry Winters at Masters Insurance and Trust. Johnny says "Hi Barry. It's been years". Barry says "Sure, Johnny. Because we don't usually have trouble with our accounts". Johnny says "You mean you didn't?" Barry says "Huh?" Johnny says "Until now". Barry says "Well, yeah. I'm afraid that's about the size of it. And this time it's bad trouble. Simplex Tackle Company, Johnny. Over in Danbury". Johnny says "Fishing tackle?" Barry says "That's right". Johnny says "Well, how come I've never heard of them?" Barry says "Well, they're a small outfit. A kind of glorified partnership. It's owned by nine men. One of them, Hanley Thomas is president. The others are secretary, treasurer, and a flock of vice presidents". Johnny asks "So, what's happened?" Barry says "Well, the nine of them, plus the twenty or thirty workers at the plant, are all covered by a group life insurance deal. And listen, we've just had to pay off on three policies in a row". Johnny says "Well, that's too bad. But why call on me?" Barry says "Because, Johnny, those three deaths were all murders". Within a few minutes, Johnny made the trip to the Masters home office, located in Hartford, and was soon sitting in Barry Winter's office. Johnny's first question is concerning the police involvement. Barry said "Sure, they've been working on these murders, Johnny, but they haven't come up with anything, except a theory that one man is behind them all. Johnny asks "Why, Barry?" He says "Because the victims have all been members of the Simplex Tackle Company, and they've all occurred within a month, and each of them occurred on a Wednesday". Johnny says "A pattern, huh?" Barry says "That's right. And also, Johnny, because there's been no apparent reason for any of them".

Defense Attorney - Client Joshua Masters

Attorney Martha Ellis Bryant is meeting with a potential client, Joshua Masters, in her law office. Martha says "Conducting an investigation is decidedly out of my line Mr. Masters. I'm an attorney not a private detective". Joshua says "I understand that Miss Bryant, but this is something I believe you could handle better than a private detective". Martha says "Well I'm very flattered, but I'm afraid I don't quite understand". Joshua says "Your reputation for integrity is common knowledge, so I know I can trust you. You're famous for proving people innocent". Now, uh, one of my three sons is trying to kill me". Martha says "And you want me to find out which one is guilty?" Joshua says "Well, in the manner of speaking, yes but what's more important I want to know which two are innocent. You see, there's a lot of money involved as well". Martha asks "How old are you, Mr. Masters?" Joshua says "I'm 68". Martha asks "And your sons?" Joshua says "The oldest is 38 and the youngest is 33". Martha asks "Are they married?" Joshua says "No, all three like to consider themselves as eligible bachelors". Martha says "Yes, I believe I've read about them in the newspapers". Joshua says "I'm not proud of my sons, Miss Bryant. They're parasites waiting for my money. Waiting for me to die, and ones trying to hurry it". Martha asks "Will your sons inherit your money?" Joshua says "As my will is now, the estate is to be divided equally among the three boys". Martha asks "Well, specifically what is it that makes you think that one of the boys is trying to murder you?" Joshua says "Well, I've got a weakness for speed. I like to go fast, in a car, boat, anything. I've got a foreign car that's very fast. I like to get out on the freeway and open my car up once in a while. I started out the other day and got a flat tire. I drove into a service station to get it fixed. One lug bolt was holding the wheel on. The other four had been unscrewed, holding by one thread. My speedboat bilge was full of gasoline, and would have blown up if I had touched the starter. There were many other things like that".

In a modest suburban cottage, a young man named Russell is walking towards the front door, with a stubborn, unhappy expression on his face. Suddenly, a beautiful young woman named Jean, emerges from another room and pauses in surprise. She says "Russell, where are you going?" He says "I'm going out, Jean". She says "But it's nearly midnight". Russell says "Never mind. I'll spend the night in a hotel". Jean says "You're angry about something". Russell says "Why shouldn't I be? It's bad enough to be out of a job. But when someone tells me my wife's been meeting another man behind my back...." Jean says "That isn't true, Russell". He says "Isn't it?" She says "No". Russell says "All right, deny it. But I've got proof". Jean says "Aren't you going to give me a chance to explain?" Russell says "There's nothing to explain, Jean. I.... What are you looking at?" Jean says "There was someone outside the window. A face was peering in the window just now. It looked like Jeffrey Tate". Russell says "Well, I don't see anyone. You've got Jeffrey Tate on your mind so much, you even believe you're seeing his face wherever you go". Jean says "Russell, please". He says "I'll call you in the morning, Jean". As Russell walks outside, he is talking to himself "Tate. That's all I've been hearing. Jeffrey Tate. Well, she can have him. Jean thinks that...." Russell suddenly hears something. He asks "Who's there? Who's hiding behind... Oh. Are you crazy? Put that gun down. No. No. Don't shoot. Don't...." Two shots rang out. The next day, Jean is talking to Mr. Keen, telling him everything that happened. She says "When I heard the shots, Mr. Keen, I ran out of our cottage and found my husband Russell, lying on our lawn, dead!" Mr. Keen asks "You say you'd seen a man named Jeffrey Tate peering into your window, Mrs. Owens, just before the murder?" Jean says "Yes, Mr. Keen". Mike Clancy says "The police haven't picked this Tate fellow up yet, boss". Mr. Keen says "My partner, Mike Clancy, read the details of your husband's murder in the morning paper, Mrs. Owens. But, I haven't had a chance to go over them myself". Jean says "I told the police that I saw Jeffrey Tate outside our window, Mr. Keen, and they're searching for him. But he left his home last night and they haven't been able to locate him".

Walpole says "I'm not sure what it is, sir, you have a look". Brewster asks "Where is it?" Walpole says "Far out off the starboard bow, bobbing in the water". Brewster says "Let's see. Hmm, I don't see anything...." Walpole says "But I'm positive, sir, there's something...." Brewster says "Wait a minute. You're right, Mr. Walpole, lower a boat". Walpole asks "What is it, sir?" Brewster says "It's a man. We'd better get to him". Walpole says "Aye, sir. Man boat Number One. Make ready to lower away". Meanwhile later, as the rescued man starts to regain consciousness, Brewster says "Oh now, just take it easy. Mister, you're going to be alright, just take another swallow of this". The man says "That's fine. Who are you?" Brewster says "I'm Captain Brewster, skipper of the Anna Girl, she's a fishing troller. We picked you up just after dawn this morning". The man asks "Where am I now?" Brewster says "You're at my house. I brought you onshore. What happened to you?" The man says "Well, closest I could remember, I was on the fourth watch. We had heavy going. I went forward to batting down number one. Bow took a dive. Well, here I am". Brewster asks "What was your ship? The name on your lifebuoy was too dim to make out". The man says "The Oreo. Cargo, eight thousand tons out of New York". Brewster asks "What company?" The man says "North Star. Why?" Brewster says "Well, I won't send a report". The man says "I'll take care of that". Brewster says "You'll be in the blankets for two or three days. My wife Anna can take care of you".

Wednesday Jan 14, 2026
Wednesday Jan 14, 2026
During the middle of December, Larry and Ruthie Oaks are waiting in their car outside the bus station. Larry says "Roll the window up, Ruthie". She says "Honey, it's hot in the car". Larry says "Got cold". Ruthie says "Larry, we have to breathe". Larry says "Did I tell you I had sinusitis?" Ruthie says "Several times. What time is Mallory's bus?" Larry says "7:05. The Doc in prison said I had one of the worst cases of sinusitis he ever saw". A bus comes to a stop at the station, and Ruthie says "I think this is him. Larry, light me a cigarette". Larry says "What is this stuff, Ruthie? Lighting cigarettes, open the doors, waiting for me to pull out chairs for you. What's got into you?" Ruthie says "I waited four years for you to get out of prison. I'd like to know you are around". Larry says "I'm around". Ruthie says "Oh, here comes Mallory". Larry says "Hmmm, he brought that beat up shortwave portable radio. I told him to leave that thing behind". Ruthie says "Don't start anything, Honey". Larry says "Hey, Mallory. Over here". Mallory says "Larry and Ruthie, what's the good word?" Larry says "Get in. It's cold". Mallory asks "What kind of a job we going on?" Larry says "It's a big one". Meanwhile, the phone rings in a Kansas Sheriff's Office. Lieutenant Martin answers. He talks for a couple of minutes, and hangs up the phone. Martin says "Sheriff called to wish us a Merry Christmas. You know, I'd sure like to wrap this case up as a Christmas present for him". Sid, the Deputy, says "Well, I you're on the wrong track, Lieutenant". He says "Maybe I am. I don't know. Sid says "The drug store was in Oklahoma. Cash and narcotics were taken by two men. A woman was waiting in the car". Martin says "And the car had Kansas plates". Sid says "The liquor store was held up in Wichita. All the cash and nineteen cases of liquor were taken by two men. A woman was waiting, but this time it was a black panel truck with Oklahoma plates". Martin says "The descriptions fit". Sid says "Outside of a jewelry store robbery and the liquor store, none of the robberies were committed in Kansas". Martin says "Well, they were all close enough. No more than an hour's drive over the state line".

Jeff Regan, Investigator - A Cure for Insomnia
Monday Jan 12, 2026
Monday Jan 12, 2026
It was about 10 o'clock in the morning when Regan got to the Lyon Detective Bureau office. Lyon says "Jeffrey, my boy, be careful where you stand". Regan says "What's the matter Lyon, drop an olive?" Lyon says" No, don't be funny. Your feet are muddy and we can't afford to have the carpet cleaned. Not the way business is going these days". Regan says "Yeah, well okay. Mind if i sit down? My overcoat's wet". Lyon says "Well then, take it off first. Regan, our books don't balance for the month of April. Wait a minute, leave your coat on and don't sit down". Regan says "So, we got a new client?" Lyon says "Yes, Jeffrey, I was sitting here at my desk twenty minutes ago, trying to balance our books...." Regan says "And the phone rang and it was a new client". Lyon says "Exactly Jeffrey, a man named Paulson. He lives in the hills above Hollywood and Vine on Chapman Boulevard, 7707 and a half. You better get out there right away". Regan asks "Somebody's life in danger, maybe?" Lyon says "Life in danger? Oh no, the victim's already dead, Mrs. Paulson. Paulson's wife murdered, he said. Paulson wants us to prove it". Regan says "Paulson wants us to prove his wife was murdered?" Lyon says "Yes. You see Mrs. Paulson died seven or eight days ago. The police say she committed suicide, but Mr. Paulson would be so much happier if it would turn out that she were murdered, Jeffrey". Regan says "Nice fellow". Lyon says "Isn't he, my boy, he wants to pay us a hundred dollars". Regan says "Not what I meant. Look Lyon, if Mrs. Paulson died seven or eight days ago, what's so urgent about my getting out there this morning?" Lyon says "It's the one hundred dollars, Jeffery". Regan says "Oh, I get it". Lyon says "Yeah as I explained to you, my boy, try as I might, scheme as I would, our April books refuse to balance. Now, uh, I've been thinking that perhaps one little fee carried backwards from the first week of May...." Regan says "Oh okay, Fatso, set your calendar back to standard time. I'll go out and talk to Paulson".

The Epic Casebook - Death Most Known
Monday Jan 12, 2026
Monday Jan 12, 2026
Inspector Carr is assigned by investigate a claim made by an American to be the sole heir of one of Britain's oldest Earldoms. When Ralph Marriott, from the state of Wyoming in the US, arrived to claim the title, he created a fund in which he promised that for every fifty pound share invested in his fund, the sender could hope to receive a one hundred percent profit as soon as the inheritance became his. Marriott claimed the purpose of the fund was to seek financial support for his rightful claims to the succession. This upset the establishment quite considerably. Questions were asked in Parliament. The home secretary was asked to look into it, so he invoked the aid of Scotland Yard. The Commissioner delegated Carr with the task of probing Mr. Marriott's motives and integrity. Carr began by paying a visit to Mr. Marriott at his current place of residence in England. When Marriott came to the door, Carr says "Mr. Marriott?" He says "Yes, I take it your Inspector Carr". Carr says "Yes, sir. Here is my warrant card" Marriott says "Oh, I don't need to see that now. You come on in. I mean, you're not arresting me or anything like that. Or are you?" Carr says "No, sir. As I said on the telephone, the home secretary is a little bit worried about all this publicity". Marriott says "Now, you said something about my inheritance. Any question you happen to ask, I'll be happy to answer". Carr says "Well, it's very good of you, sir. I've been through your papers. There's no reason at all why you shouldn't be in this country or why you shouldn't lay claim to the title. Frankly, Mr. Marriott, what is worrying us is the advertisement. The fund seems to be degrading for the British aristocracy. It's like gambling on your claim of inheritance". Marriott says "Okay, I get the message. I've probably received enough dough to pay all the fees I need. You can go back and tell your commissioner there'd be no more soliciting. I'll withdraw the advertisement. Mind you, there's an exception to every rule".

Sunday Jan 11, 2026
At the request of Elliot Champion, Sam went to Champion's Brokerage House in San Mateo, where he met Mildred Champion. As Sam walks into the office, Mildred says "Yes, may I help you?" Sam says "I'm here to see Mr. Elliot Champion. My name's Spade. You don't have to write it down. He's expecting me". Mildred asks "Your business, Mr. Spade?" Sam says "It's private". Mildred says "I have to have a little more than that, I'm afraid". Sam says "Always this hot here?" Mildred says "Oh, Mr. Champion can't stand fresh air". Sam says "Obviously". Mildred says "That's what makes it so warm in here. I'm sorry". Sam says "Yeah, just flip the switch and tell him I'm here". Mildred turns on the intercom. Champion asks "Well, what is it, Mildred?" She says "I was just going out. Mr. Spade is here. He says you're expecting him, but I don't find him listed in your appointment book". Champion says "Don't be an idiot. Send him in". Mildred says "You may go in now". Sam asks "Is he always like that? Mildred says "He's nice today". Sam says "Sorry, mother. That's your name, isn't it?" Mildred says "His office is first on the right". Sam says "Don't bother, I'll find it". Mildred says "Thank you. I'll just go to lunch". When Sam appears at his office door, Champion says "Well, don't just stand there. Come in and shut the door. What I have to discuss with you is private. I don't want that snoopy niece of mine listening to our conversation". Sam says "She's out to lunch now. Does she listen that often?" Champion says "All the time. Why?" Sam says "She didn't know who I was". Champion says "I outsmarted her there. I called you from the drugstore on the corner. I don't want anyone to know who you are, why you're here. Joe Josephs has been released from San Quentin this week and I've been receiving telephone calls from him telling me to beware and to watch out and a lot of other nonsense". Sam asks "What was he doing at San Quinton?" Champion says "Two to five on an embezzling count. He previously worked here as a junior executive".

Babe Sherman is a confidence man, currently "working" Paris, France. In a big city, like Paris, it was easy for Sherman to pick up money without attracting too much attention. He could gamble on the races or pick up blackmail money from married women who don't like their husbands to know what they're doing. He was currently working on a young French lady named Therese Jermaine. He describes her as the tiniest woman he ever saw. She was like a little bird, fragile and delicate. Sherman first saw her selling some guy a gold cigarette case in one of the best jewelry stores of the Rue de la Paix. Of course, Sherman made quite a first impression on her. Therese wasn't any different from the others. The build-up took a month of taking her to lunch every day and calling for her every night. When shopping with her, Sherman would ignore the stuff in the showcases as though it didn't exist. He had to tear his eyes away from it and pretend he wasn't interested. On the day it happened, they had lunch together. Sherman took her back to the jewelry store. She insisted on showing Sherman some pearls. Therese says "You must look at these, they're so beautiful". Sherman says "They are not as beautiful as you". She says "Look at them, so beautiful". Sherman says "Yeah, I guess so. Tell me how much, and I'll buy them for you". Therese says "I think for the moment in your money, they are seventy five thousand dollars". Sherman says "To wear around your neck? Try them on". She says "Oh, I think I should not be silly". Sherman says "Oh, come on. Let's see how they look on you. Turn around. Oh, I think the clasp is broken. Oh no!" She gasps as the pearls drop to the floor, Sherman picks them up and says "Oh, we better put them away". She says "Yes, you go now. You see me tonight, at the same place?" Sherman says "Positively, about 8 o'clock". Sherman had deliberately let the pearls drop to the floor. When he picked them up, it was easy to make the switch. The pearls she put back in the case weren't worth more than a hundred bucks.

The New Adventures of Nero Wolfe - The Final Page
Saturday Jan 10, 2026
Saturday Jan 10, 2026
Mr. Wolfe has accepted a dinner invitation from an old friend, Arthur Merle. Fritz Brenner, Mr. Wolfe's exceptionally talented Swiss chef, and occasional chauffer, will be driving Mr. Wolfe and Archie Goodwin to the Merle apartment. Fritz calls the office to tell them that the car is ready, and parked out front. Archie says "Yes, thanks, We'll be right down, Fritz". Archie hangs up and says "Boss, Mr. Wolfe, will you please hurry? The car is downstairs waiting. Fritz is all ready". Wolfe says "You're well aware that it will avail you nothing to hurry me? Why must the world be such a rush today? Isn't it enough that I've agreed against my better judgment to leave the comforts of home?" Archie says "To a dinner, that should be an inducement". Wolfe says "Fritz could have prepared a delicious dinner. He has truffles in the pantry". Archie says "Well, why did you promise Arthur Merle? You didn't have to accept the invitation". Wolfe says "Quite so. He's an old friend. Besides, he does set an excellent table". Sometime later, after they finally reach the lobby of Merle's apartment, Mr. Wolfe is surprised to see a young lady working as the elevator operator. She asks "Are you going up, gentlemen?" Archie asks "Are you, honey?" She says "Certainly. It's my job". Archie says "Then so are we. After you, boss". Wolfe asks "When did they install women elevator operators in this building?" She says "I've been here for two years. Floor, please". Archie says "Arthur Merle's apartment, I believe its 814". She says "That's right. Are you Mr. Wolfe?" Archie says "No, this is Mr. Wolfe. I'm Archie Goodwin". Wolfe says "Although the name Wolf would be much more appropriate for him than for me". Archie asks "How did you know about us?" She says "Mr. Merle came in about a half hour ago. He mentioned that he was expecting you". Moments later, Wolfe and Archie are ringing Merle's doorbell, but getting no answer. They find that the front door is unlocked. They go in to look for him. Archie looks in the study, and says "Boss! Boss!" Wolfe says "Good heavens, Archie. Don't shout. I'm coming". Archie says "It's Arthur Merle. Look, he is slumped over his desk with a knife in his back!" Wolfe says "Yeah, he's quite dead. Call Inspector Kramer at Homicide".

Box 13 - Double Trouble
Saturday Jan 10, 2026
Saturday Jan 10, 2026
Dan Holiday receives a letter in Box 13 that reads "If you're interested in preventing a murder, come to 327 North Greeley Street in Edgemont. It should take you only three hours by train to get here, but you must come at exactly 3 30 PM or it may be too late, Pat Kennedy". The entire letter was typed, even the signature at the bottom. Susie asks "How long will you be gone this time Mr. Holiday?" Dan says "Well, that's a little hard to tell Susie. I think it depends on Pat Kennedy, whoever he or she is". Susie says "I don't like letters that have only typed signatures at the bottom". Dan asks "Why not?" Susie says "Well, it always makes me think that someone else wrote it". Dan says "And that's exactly what makes me think this may be very interesting". Some time later, Dan got off the train at the Edgemont station platform at 3:00 o'clock. A taxi left him in front of an apartment house at the Greely Street address at 3:20, ten minutes before the deadline. Dan walks into the lobby and sees an uninterested desk clerk. The clerk says "Yeah?" Dan asks "Is there a Pat Kennedy living here?" Clerk says "Uh huh. Miss Pat Kennedy. Why?" Dan says "I'd like to see her". Clerk says "Apartment 1-B, straight down the hall". Dan asks "Aren't you going to ring her up first?" Clerk says "There's no phone in her place. Be sure to knock first". Dan says "Oh sure, that's one of my good habits". At the door, Dan knocked. Getting no reply, he tried the door. It was open, so he walked in. Dan says "Miss Kennedy? Pat Kennedy?" Dan walked into the apartment a little farther. A clock on a table ticked away, it's hands at 3:23. There was a window open in the room. He walks to the bedroom and stops. It was Miss Kennedy. Suddenly, a man appears and says "Don't move Bud. Get away from her". Dan says "You better send for a doctor". The man walks up and says "It's a little late for that. She's dead".

A man walks up to Slate in Shannon's Place and says "Is your name Slate Shannon?" Slate says "That's right. And this is Miss Duval". The man says "I'm very happy". Saylor says "Then I'm happy too, hello". The man says "My name is Cameron. I have a plantation outside of Santo Mar, sugar". Slate asks "What can we do for you Mr. Cameron?" He says "I've never come to a man and beg before in my life". Slate says "Then you've come to the wrong man, you don't have to beg anything from me". Cameron says "It's about a girl, a young girl, wild, impetuous and spoiled". Saylor says "No thanks, Mr. Shannon already has one". Cameron says "Please, it's about my daughter, it's about Cathy, Cathy and the Blue Moon". Slate says "Oh yes, there's a gambling ship in the bay called the Blue Moon. Look, if you're a man in trouble I'll listen to you. If all you want to do is hire someone to spank your daughter for gambling, get yourself somebody else". Cameron says "There's nobody else that can do what I want you to do. Cathy's involved with a man named Norton". Slate says "Oh yes, I've heard of him, he owns the Blue Moon. How did your daughter get mixed up with a guy like that?" Cameron says "I don't know, all I know is that since she's met him she's....well, she's changed, she's a stranger to me. She's on that boat all the time". Saylor says "I have an easy solution. Why don't you just tell Mr. Norton to bar your daughter from the boat?" Cameron says "I've tried that, he laughed in my face, he told me...." Slate says "Hold it a minute. Saylor, there's a guy over there at the cigar counter, take care of him. I'll remember every word Mr. Cameron says and tell you later". Saylor goes to the cigar counter. Slate says "Alright, Cameron". He says "Well, Norton knows something about Cathy that I don't. I know my daughter, it's more than just a lust for gambling. Please, will you help me, Shannon? Go there, talk to Cathy, convince her that she need never go back to that ship again. Please, I'll give you anything". Slate says "Put your wallet back. Your daughter's in trouble with Norton, I'll try to straighten her out". Cameron says "You don't understand, Shannon, I'm a rich man". Slate says "When I bring Cathy back, will you give me a box of lump sugar?"

Calling All Cars - Desertion Leads to Murder
Friday Jan 09, 2026
Friday Jan 09, 2026
On the morning of January 10th, John C. Sheldon, lineman for the Consolidated Gas and Electric Company of San Diego, and two members of his crew are repairing a telephone line. Sheldon is perched on the cross arm of a telephone pole. The others are waiting below. One of the crew asks "Are you going to want a new insulator for that line, Sheldon?" He says "No, the insulator is alright, the line itself has just loosened a little. I'll get it in a minute. Just needs a little tightening is all". A crew member says "You can tighten it all you want as far as I'm concerned. I want to sit down and eat. I'm hungry". Sheldon says "I've got this finished now. We can rest for awhile. Say, this is a swell day alright. It's quiet and peaceful. Huh, there's a guy whose got the right idea. He's stretched out on the grass over there. He looks like he's out like a light. That's the life, nothing to do be sleep... Hey, wait a minute. He can't be sleeping like that, with his face right in the dirt. Yeah, you guys take a run over there and see what's wrong with him". After a few seconds, the crew find him. One says "Hey, this guy is dead. There's a hole in the back of his head. You better call the police, Sheldon!" He says "I'll tap this line and see if I can get through to police headquarters!" Acting upon this information, Chief Hayes of the San Diego Police Department, immediately sends Detectives Harry Kelly and James Patrick, and others, to the scene. From the body of the dead man, they remove letters from his wallet, which establishes the victim's identity of being one Frank McCrary, a San Diego taxi driver. After the crime scene has been investigated, Sergeant Joseph Lopez is assigned to check on McCrary's actions as far as possible. His first step is to interrogate a cab driver friend of McCrary's named Register. After the initial shock of learning that McCrary had been murdered, Mr. Register told Lopez that he had two soldiers in his cab last night, and that they got on his got on his nerves, so he brought them back to the city.

During his time in San Quentin Prison, Robert Tasker began writing. After the first year of his original ten year sentence, writing short stories started as just an activity to occupy his time. Later, as he became more proficient, he submitted a short story to a magazine, and, to his surprise, it was published. An attorney named Max Craiger read that story, and was so impressed that he visited Tasker in prison. Craiger looked over Tasker's case and told him that he would try to help. Sometime later, Tasker was called to the Warden's Office. Craiger was there. He said "Robert, I've got some good news for you. I've got your parole. You're free. Well, you happy? Tasker says "Sure, it's just that I still don't quite believe it". Warden says "It's official, Tasker. Here are your papers". Tasker says "Papers, that'll make everything easy won't it, Warden? Passport to a brilliant future for an ex-con". Craiger says "Robert, I know it's going to be a little hard to adjust at first but there's a job in my office". Tasker says "Thanks, Mr. Craiger, but I don't want charity, even from you". Craiger says "It isn't charity, Robert. I need a clerk in my office or I wouldn't have offered you the job. You don't have to stay if you don't want to, but you'll be doing me a favor if you try". Tasker says "Well, I guess I owe you at least one favor". Warden says "Well, Tasker, goodbye and good luck. Just remember that what's happened up here is water over the dam. Don't hold any grudges". Tasker says "I don't hold any grudges, Warden. There's one man I hate, that's all". Craiger says "A man you hate, Robert?" Tasker says "What's the use of kidding about it? His name is Arthur Hines and I hate him, simple as that". Warden says "Well, forget it, son. Hines was the District Attorney then, and he was just doing a job, that's all. He had nothing against you". Tasker says "He was doing a job all right". Craiger says "Robert, you mustn't feel that way. You'll get along with Hines all right". Tasker says "Get along with him?" Craiger says "I mean in the office. Oh, didn't I tell you? Arthur Hines is my new partner in the Law Firm".

The old man behind the counter, Sam Schwartz, says "Yes, I could help you. So, what is the gun for?" Ernie says "The gun is for you if you don't do like I say. You all alone here?" Sammy says "Yeah, take the money and go, you need it so bad". They hear a voice from behind say "Something is wrong, Sammy?" Sam says "That's just my wife from the back room, she wouldn't bother...." Ernie says "Tell her to come out here. Hey you, out here now." Mrs. Schwartz says "Who is speaking in such a .... Sammy, a gun he's got". Ernie says "There's a cop out there taking shots at me. If he comes in, I shoot. Okay? You, what's your name?" She says "I am Mrs. Schwartz". Ernie says "Okay, get over there by the front window. There in the corner where I can watch you, and don't move". Sam says "Like he says, Minnie, go in the corner. You shouldn't move". Ernie says "Now, you Pop ...." Sam says "You could call me Sam". Ernie says "Yeah, sure Pop, you're going to stand in front of me, so if somebody puts a bullet in me it's got to go through you first, okay? Sam says "By me?, no, not okay, since you ask". Ernie says "Don't get smart, Pop". Sam says "You don't want answers, you shouldn't ask questions". The man says "Alright, Pop, open the door, just to crack, so I can yell at someone". Sam opens the door slightly, and the man says "Hey you out there, Copper. You hear me?" The officer says "Yeah, I hear you". Ernie says "You see this guy I got with me? His name is Sam Schwartz. He owns this dump. Now, if you take one lousy step towards me, Sam Schwartz is a dead man. I got a gun right on the back of his head. Tell the guy, Pop". Sam asks "Tell him what?" Ernie says "About the gun, stupid". Sam says "A gun he's got, on the back of my head". The officer says "Now listen to me. Don't shoot that man. Put your hands up and come out here. All we've got on you now is armed robbery, a few years. If you pull that trigger, you're a cinch for the chair. It would be crazy to kill him".

Matt Cvetic went to a meeting in his communist cell on a Tuesday at 9:00 PM. There were members six there, four men and two women. They went through all the reports, the propaganda, and the directors. Then, comrade Ted, the leader of the cell, had a word to say. He says "Keep this in mind, comrades, the party expects nothing impossible. It expects you to just do what you're told. I think that's all, good night". As the members got up to leave, Ted says "Oh, comrade Matt, wait just a second, will you?" Matt says "Me? Sure". Ted says "Sit down. Have you ever been in Chicago?" Matt says "I've passed through a couple of times. That's all". Ted asks "Do you have any connections there? Relatives? Anybody that knows you?" Matt says "Not that I know of". Ted says "Okay. You know, comrade, you are a pretty good looking guy. That isn't gonna do any harm on the job we've got for you". Matt asks "What job?" Ted says "The Central Committee decided from what I told them about you. You are the comrade to handle this follow-up". Matt says "I don't understand". Ted says "You don't have to understand. All you have to do is obey orders". Matt asks "Okay, what are my orders?" Ted says "Pack a bag full of clothes and be at the information desk at the Union Station at 1:00 AM". Matt says "Four hours from now. Where am I going?" Ted says "Don't worry about it". Matt says "And how long will I be gone?" Ted says "Who knows comrade, maybe forever". Comrade Ted gave Matt some money for expenses and they walked out to the street together. Ted says "Well, see you again, comrade" and walks off. Matt, then, walks across town to the place where he lives. He went to his room and called his FBI contact. Matt says "I'm being sent somewhere. I'm not sure, but I think it's Chicago. I'm supposed to make a contact at the Union Station at 1:00 AM". The FBI contact asks "Do you know what it's about?" Matt says "No idea". FBI contact says "Chicago. Yes, there's an operation in Chicago that we've heard about. I'll give you a number to call if you need it. Michigan 9-1112. Don't write it down, just remember it". Matt says "I'll remember".

The year was 1941. Polly Dubinsky was determined to find out what happened to her married sister, Rachel Dobkin. Many people went missing at this time as London was pounded mercilessly from the air. But Polly didn't believe her sister was a victim of the blitz. For one thing, her sister's handbag, including her identity documents, had been found in a post office. During the war, it was essential to carry this identification. Polly went to the police, and was shown through to Chief Inspector Davis. Polly says "My sister's been strangled by her husband! This was told to me by two mediums!" Davis says "Come now, Miss". Polly asks "What are you going to do about it?" Davis says "Yes, Miss, but the evidence of a medium, or even two mediums..." Polly says "She's been murdered, I tell you. You don't care!" Davis says "Alright, I'll talk to the woman, this medium". Polly says "And Rachel's husband, you'll talk to him as well?" Davis says "Yes". Chief Inspector Davis did visit the medium, and Mr. Dobkin was seen too. Mr. Dobkin didn't seem much concerned. He lived apart from his wife for the last eighteen years, and he freely admitted that there was no love loss between them. Harry Dobkin said he had seen her on April 11th, the day she disappeared, when she pestered him yet again about maintenance money. Then she said that she was going to her mother's. Where, in fact, she had gone after that, he neither knew or cared. Then, the matter might have rested. But about that time, there was a fire in the cellar of an old Baptist church in South London, next door to where Rachel Dobkin's husband worked at night. In fact, he was discovered at the scene, by a policeman. Harry Dobkins says "I'm glad you've come officer, this is a terrible blow, isn't it?" The Officer says "I'll call the fire brigade. They should be here in a minute. After the fire was put out, a day was spent digging over parts of the floor. Strangely, a newly dug hole was found, about the size of a grave.

Dragnet - The Big Fake
Monday Jan 05, 2026
Monday Jan 05, 2026
Detective Sergeants Joe Friday and Ben Romero, working the day watch out of Personnel, arrive at the Assembly Room of Central Division at 5:25 PM. Ben says "Do you see him, Joe?" Joe says "Yeah, that looks like him over there". They walk up to him, and Joe says "Hi. Are you Russell Clark?" He says "Yeah, that's right". Joe says "Friday and Romero, Personnel. Lieutenant Drummond over at the Bureau of Internal Affairs would like to talk to you". Clark says "Alright, when did he want to see me?" Ben says "Right now". Clark says "Okay, let's go". As they are walking, Clark asks "What do they want to see me about, you know?" Joe says "Drummond will tell you". Ben asks "How long you been on the job, Clark?" He says "About two and a half months". Joe asks "How do you like it?" Clark says "Oh, I like it fine. My wife doesn't think much of it. She wanted me to stay at my old job". Joe asks "What was that?" Clark says "Selling insurance". As they arrive at the office, Ben says "This is Officer Clark, Lieutenant Drummond". Clark says "How do you do, sir?" Drummond says "How are you, Clark? Sit down. I have a couple of questions for you. You were on special duty at the Olympic auditorium last night, is that right?" Clark says "Yes sir, for the fights". Drummond asks "Did anything unusual happen out there last night?" Clark says "Well, it wasn't very important, Lieutenant. After the fights, a drunk fell down the stairs on the way out of the auditorium, and broke his arm. I took him to Georgia Street and they took care of the arm and I drove him home. He was pretty drunk". Drummond asks "Why didn't you book the man?" Clark says "I didn't think it was necessary. The man was in pretty bad shape. Drummond says "Law is there for a purpose. You decided to forget it, now you're in a mess, right up to your neck". Clark says "I don't understand". Drummond asks "Do you remember his name?" Clark says "Yes, sir, his name was Stacy, lives out in West LA" Drummond says "Mr. Stacy, wants to file a complaint against you. He claims you took him back to the auditorium, beat him up, broke his arm, and robbed him of 128 dollars".

Night Beat - The Elevator Caper

Finding a dead body in the dark alley is business as usual in the big city, however, this time it was different. The police asked newspaper reporter, Randy Stone, to identify the body. Early the next morning, Randy was in the morgue standing beside a sheet covered slab. The Police Lieutenant nodded, and the attendant pulled back the sheet. The Lieutenant says "Well?" Randy says "Yes, that's him, that's Ted Carter". The Lieutenant says "Okay, that does it. We had to get positive identification and you were the only one we could reach. Sorry I had to get you out of bed. Well, I guess that winds it up. Thanks for the trouble". Randy says "Wait a minute, what do you mean by "thanks?" What happens now? We go back and catch up on our sleep?" Lieutenant says "I know you had a friendly interest in the kid, Randy, but he got it the way all hoodlums eventually get it". Randy says "He was going straight, you know it". Lieutenant says "Getting sore about it ...." Randy says "Who did it? Who killed him? Lieutenant says "Go into any book joint, any gin mill, look at any back alley, any flop house. Whoever you find there could have done it, take your pick". Randy says "Take my pick?" Lieutenant says "Nobody talks. Nobody remembers anything. No clues. But enough suspects to fill Soldier's Field. In my book, it's murder by person or persons unknown". Randy says "Oh, it's just like that". Lieutenant says "Just like that". Randy says "Maybe for you it's that way, but not for me, Lieutenant. You want the man who put Ted Carter under that sheet? Well, brother you just reach out and touch him". Lieutenant asks "What are you talking about?" Randy says "I've known Ted since we were kids. We grew up in the same block of tenements. Whenever we got together, I never missed a chance for some fancy speeches about Ted going straight and leading a good life. Well, he listened and started going straight, you know he did. However, somebody didn't like the idea of him going straight so he's now lying on that slab as a tribute to my eloquence. If I don't find who killed Ted Carter, I'm going to start having some lousy dreams, Lieutenant, and I'm a guy that likes to sleep soundly".

Dangerous Assignment - Missing Arctic Warfare Report
Sunday Jan 04, 2026
Sunday Jan 04, 2026
As Steve is walking into the Commissioner's office, He says "Good Morning, Commissioner. Ruth said you had an assignment for me. Commissioner says "I do, Steve. How would you go about firing a rocket if the firing mechanism was frozen?" Steve said "What? You mean you dragged me in here just to try out a riddle on me?" The Commissioner says "I'm serious now, answer my question". Steve says "Okay, so if the firing mechanism was frozen, I probably wouldn't be able to fire the rocket. I suppose that's the wrong answer". The Commissioner says "No, it's the right answer and that's what's wrong". Steve says "I think you'd better start at the beginning". Commissioner says "Steve as you know the entire arctic area is a potential battleground, but sub-zero temperatures do a lot of strange things to weapons of war. All the way from impairing their accuracy to rendering them completely useless". Steve says "So, what am I supposed to do, invent a new plastic to protect them from the cold?" Commissioner says "You don't have to. it's already being made. It's a liquid which does protect weapons and electronic devices from the effects of sub-zero temperatures". Steve says "Well, that's all very interesting commissioner but I still don't see where i fit into the deal". Commissioner says "I'm coming to that. The private company which developed this new plastic has just concluded exhaustive field tests with it up in the arctic. They learned under actual conditions just how much of this liquid is to be used, how it's applied, and how it affects the accuracy of the weapons. In short, they found out a lot of pretty important information, vital information. Steve, their field representative man, named Holcomb wrote up a complete report on it for the western hemisphere defense meeting which is slated to be held in Quebec, Canada, tomorrow. Steve says "Oh I get it. You want me to go up to Quebec and bodyguard this guy, Holcomb?" Commissioner says "I'm afraid it's a little too late for that. Last night on a side street in Quebec they found Holcomb's body. He was quite dead and the report was missing".

The Adventures of the Falcon - The Case of the Unsilent Butler
Saturday Jan 03, 2026
Saturday Jan 03, 2026
It is early afternoon in New York City. In the swank offices of the Conreid Oil Company, the president of the outfit thumbs through a stack of correspondence. His secretary, Miss Rogers, calls for him on the intercom. Conried answers and says "What is it, Miss Rogers? She says "I'm sorry to bother you Mr. Conried, but there's a Daniel Lions here to see you". Conreid says "Daniel Lions?" Miss Rogers says "He used to be with the Cooper Detective Agency. He says he has a 3:30 PM appointment". Conreid says "Oh yes, send him in". Miss Rogers says "Mr. Conried will see you now, Mr. Lions". Conried says over the telecom "Miss Rogers, see that we're not disturbed. Danny walks into the office and says "Mr, Conried, I'm Danny Lions. Conried says "Lions, this is indeed a pleasure, sir. Won't you sit down? Danny says "Thanks". Conried says "You're probably wondering why I sent for you". Danny says "Now that you mention it, I am. Your company has its own staff of troubleshooters". Conried says "Well, the assignment I had in mind calls for peculiar talents, and I don't think our boys are equipped to handle it. Mr. Lions, how much do you know about the oil business. Danny says "Very little". Conried asks "Have you any idea how we locate a well?" Danny says "I always assume you just kept digging and hope for the best". Conried says "It's a little more scientific than that, however there's still a great deal of guesswork involved, so much so that last year alone my company lost six million dollars sinking new wells. Now, three months ago, an engineer named Robert Butler invented a device that takes practically eighty percent of the guess work out of locating oil wells. He called it the Butler Petroleum Protector". Danny says "A gimmick like that ought to be worth a fortune". Conried says "It is. Unfortunately, Robert Butler died in a car accident two weeks ago, and the plans for his invention were lost in the accident. The only thing left was a twelve inch working model, which was passed along to his brother Arthur. If we could get that working model it would be worth a hundred thousand dollars to someone. Danny says "No questions asked? Conried says "No questions asked".

Tales of the Texas Rangers - Soft Touch
Saturday Jan 03, 2026
Saturday Jan 03, 2026
Early on a Sunday morning, married couple Bill and Judy Ross are in their blue sedan, taking their children on a trip to see their grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Ross at their ranch home, located about 30 miles from the town of Salt Flats, Texas. They arrive at their destination about 11:00 o'clock in the morning. Bill says "Come on, kids, this is Grandma's house". Judy says "Bill, let them sleep. We started so early and they're tired". Bill says "Well, we can't leave them in the car". Judy says "If we wake them up now, they'll never finish their naps. We'll bring them in in a few minutes". Bill says "Okay, getting up at 4:00 AM was kind of early, even for them. Hey look, Paw has painted the windmill". Judy says "Oh Bill, I love this place. I wish we didn't live so far away". Bill says "Yeah, we don't get here often enough. Hey, I wonder where the folks are? They usually stand in the middle of the road waiting for us when they know we're bringing the kids for a visit". Judy says "The door's open. Your mother's probably in the kitchen cooking enough food for a dozen". As they walk into the house, Bill says "Yeah, don't smell anything cooking. Maw, Paw, you home?" Judy says "Maybe they're still at church, Bill". He says "No, they're always back by 10:00 o'clock. The garage door is closed, too. Paw always leaves it open when he's got the car out". Judy says "Oh, then they must be in back someplace". Bill says "Yeah. Hey Maw, Paw, where are you?" Judy says "I've never known your mother to be any place but in the kitchen, Bill". He says "Yeah, but she doesn't hear so well anymore. Let's take a look. Maw? Hmm, nobody here, Judy". She says "Bill, what's that spilled on the floor at the door to the pantry?" Bill says "Hey Judy, that looks like blood". They open the pantry door. Judy screams! Bill yells "Maw, Paw, oh, Good Lord!" The brutal murder of the rancher and his wife was reported. Texas Ranger Jace Pearson was notified by shortwave radio. He reached the ranch house in less than one hour after the bodies were discovered.

Michael Shayne, Private Detective - Date At Cliff House
Saturday Jan 03, 2026
Saturday Jan 03, 2026
Private Detective Michael Shane and his attractive assistant Phyllis Knight find themselves at San Francisco's Cliff House to keep a date with a lady that called herself Miss Jones. Phyllis says "Mike Shane, if she weren't a blonde and good-looking you'd have turned the case down". Mike says "For the thousandth time, honey, I tell you I haven't seen the girl. I only know that she's frightened. She said she was a brunette, 5'2, and wearing a Kelly Green raincoat". Phyllis says "Well then, there she is staring out the window. Oh, she saw us. Hey, does she know you?" Mike says "No, but I told her I was bringing you along and there aren't any other couples around. She says "Mr. Shayne and Miss Knight, correct?" Mike says "Are you Miss Jones?" She says "Well no, I used that name over the phone but my real name is Wright". Phyllis says "Not Patricia Wright?" She says "Yes". Phyllis says "Oh, then it was your brother. I mean, I read the article in the papers". Mike asks "What is all this?" Patricia says "My brother was killed Monday. The police said it was an accident. He fell over the cliff they said but...." Mike says "But you think he was murdered, in fact". Patricia says "Yes". Mike asks "Why?" Patricia says "I just know he was pushed over that cliff". Mike asks "And now, whom do you suspect?" She says "I don't know, my father's manager, Mr. Haberman, for one, and a Mr. Armstrong, a businessman dealing with my father, and..." Mike says "And your father?" Patricia says "Yes. Well, not that I think my father killed my brother, no, but I am suspicious of some of my father's business dealings and associates". Phyllis asks "Miss Wright, your brother was in business with your father?" She says "Yes and, well, he didn't approve of some of their deals. Mike asks "Did he complain to you or to your father?" Patricia says "Both. They've had bitter quarrels over some of their transactions". Phyllis says "And how about you, Miss Wright. Are you afraid for your own life?" Patricia says "Yes, terribly afraid". Mike says "Okay, that settles it. So, far as I'm concerned, we'll take the case".

Broadway is My Beat - The Charles Crandall Murder Case
Friday Jan 02, 2026
Friday Jan 02, 2026
Detective Danny Clover is called to an alley near Solly's Bar on Third Avenue. A man was found with a gunshot wound to his chest. Sergeant Muggerman is already on the scene, searching the dead man's pockets. He finds something, looks at it, then notices Danny and says "It was a nice day, wasn't it, Danny?" Danny asks "What did you find, Muggerman?" He says "I found him like that, all broken up about the bullet in his chest. He tried to tell me why it was there, but the word never got out". Danny asks "Was it was phoned in?" Muggerman says "Yeah, from the back room of a bar down the alley. A friendly chap wanted out for a breath of fresh air, saw this, ran back to the bar, and made his phone call. Danny asks "You talked to him?" Muggerman says "Yeah, a friendly lush. Invited me to a cold beer. I didn't take it". Danny says "He knew this man?" Muggerman says "Never had the pleasure, he told me. All the citizens of the alley never had the pleasure, I checked". Danny asks "What's that in your hand?" Muggerman says "This? Oh, I almost forgot. It's a ticket for parking made out to a Charles Crandall. Over-parked in the loading zone". Danny asks "Anything else?" Muggerman says "Not a thing, nothing. Except that expensive watch on his wrist. You have to listen awful close to even hear it ticking. Very expensive". Danny says "No wallet, no identification, just the parking ticket". Muggerman says "That's all. Not much for a grown man to leave behind him, is it, Danny?" By then, the alley became cluttered with onlookers and men from the police department, so Danny left the scene with the ticket. He took it to the Traffic Department to find an address that when along with the name and license plate number. Charles Crandall, rooming house on West 17th Street. Danny paid a visit to the address and talked to the landlady. She said that Charles was a longshoreman and worked at the Peerless Steamship Line. Danny went to his place of work and found him. Danny says "The foreman said you are Charles Crandall". He says "Yeah, is this about the parking ticket? I'm not surprised". Danny says "I am. I didn't think you were alive".

Nick Carter, Master Detective - The Four Rings of Death
Friday Jan 02, 2026
Friday Jan 02, 2026
Nick and Patsy are onboard a small motorboat headed for Tory Island, a small island just off the Long Island shore. Nick says "If I had known the weather was going to be like this, I never would have accepted this job". Patsy asks "Why are you doing it, Nick?" He says "As a special favor to Colonel Howard. A friend of his, Andrew Jessup, asked him to find the best code expert he knew, and he said I was the man of the job. So when the colonel called me, I agreed to do it" Patsy asks "Just what is it you're going to do?" Nick says "Well, it seems that back in 1776, four wealthy Tories were afraid that General Washington was going to capture Manhattan Island, so they got all their valuables together, and went to this little island where we're going now. They buried everything somewhere on the island and recorded the burial place in a secret code or cipher. They lived there for a while and later were all lost in a storm while trying to get back to the mainland". Patsy says "Is there any real truth in it?" Nick says "His lawyer, Andrew Jessup, recently came across something that convinced him the story is true. So, he rounded up the heirs of the four original Tories and arranged for them to meet on the island this afternoon. If I can decipher the code, they'll dig up the treasure and divide it". A few minutes later, the boat operator drops off Nick and Patsy at the island, then heads back toward the mainland. Patsy says "Oh, Gosh, Nick, I wish you hadn't let that boat leave us here like this. This is the loneliest looking island I ever saw". Nick says "It's all right, Patsy. We'll go back with Jessup when he goes. Ah, that must be the house up there". Suddenly, they hear a man yelling. Patsy says "Listen!" Nick says "Yes, I hear it. Wait here. I want to see what's wrong. A shot is heard. Nick soon finds one man laying on the ground, and sees another man running away. Patsy comes up and says "Nick, what is it?" Nick says "I'm okay Patsy, but this man isn't. He stopped a bullet with his head". Patsy asks "Who is he?" Nick says "Let's see if he has any identification on him. Here we are, Cyrus J. File. He's one of the heirs, Patsy. I remember his name".

Walk Softly, Peter Troy - The High Pressure Harpy
Thursday Jan 01, 2026
Thursday Jan 01, 2026
As Julie was out to lunch, Peter Troy was in his office looking at the newspaper. There was an article about a holdup in Mr. Hagerty's little corner store, but Peter didn't take too much notice of it. That kind of caper is strictly for the police. Suddenly, a tall lady swept into his office like a galleon under full sail. She must have stood five feet eleven inches in her stockings. Unfortunately, Peter left the door to his office open, so there was little to impede the overpowering Amazon's invasion. Miss Hoffman says "You'll be Peter Troy, no doubt". He says "Uh yeah, I'm Peter Troy". Miss Hoffman says "Shall I sit here?, yes, this will do". Peter says "Now, look Miss...." She says "Hoffman, Diana Hoffman of the Hoffman Business College, you know". Peter says "Business College? You sure you don't mean a gymnasium?" She says "If that's meant to be funny, I can assure you it doesn't appeal to me that way. I have come here on business, your business. You are a private investigator, are you not?" Peter says "Well, that's what the sign on the door says, Miss Hoffman". She says "You don't look much like a private investigator, rather too soppy if you don't mind me saying so". Peter says "Oh why should I mind that? You go right ahead". She says "Anyway, you'll have to do. I can't spend any more time on this project". Peter says "Project?" She says "They've arrested Heinrich Capel, Paul Capel's father, for holding up Hagerty's store. The position is this: Paul Capel's father is a shiftless person, but probably not the kind of man to commit a crime like this. Paul is convinced of his innocence and I'm prepared to support him in that at least I am prepared to go to some trouble and expense to get at the truth". Peter says "Oh, why?" She says "Because Paul Capel is my future husband, that's why". Peter says "Your future husband? Does he know? She says "Of course, he knows. I've already told him".

Mr. and Mrs. North - Shoot To Kill
Thursday Jan 01, 2026
Thursday Jan 01, 2026
Five days a week for eighteen months, Sam Mercer has ridden across town on the bus to work and home, to three rooms in a cold water flat, to his wife and baby. But not tonight. Tonight he's making a detour. One that is taking him back to an old life, an old friend, and trouble. Sam is pressing on Art's doorbell. Art opens the door and says "Well for.... look who's here, Sammy". He says "Hello, Art". Art says "Sammy boy, I can't believe it. Come on in kid, come in". Sam says "Sounds like you got company". Art says "Oh, just some of the gang. Come in kid". Sam says "No thanks, Art, I better not". Art says "Come on". Sam says "Look Art, could I talk to you private for just a minute?" Art says "Well, sure Sammy boy, sure. In here". They go into another room, and Art says "Well, what's on your mind, kid?" Sam says "I need some money, Art. Helen's been sick a lot the last six months, ever since the baby was born. I haven't been able to get a decent job, you know how it is for a guy with a record". Art says "Yeah, sure I know. Well, how much you need, kid?" Sam says "About ..about a thousand. Maybe I could get by on seven fifty, Art, but I...." Art says "Oh look, Sammy, I'd like to help you out, but I just don't have that kind of dough. A hundred or two, sure, okay, but...." Sam says "Okay Art, thanks anyway". Art says "You know kid, this...this makes me a little bit sore". Sam asks "What do you mean?" Art says "I mean you, a good guy like you, strapped for dough. You like the way you're living, working on a docks all day and going home to a wife and a squalling kid every night, packing your lunch in a tin pail, worrying about bills, trying to decide whether to ride to work or save a dime for a glass of beer?" Sam says "Look Art, will you...." Art says "Who do you think you're kidding, Sammy? Remember when you were living in a nice apartment, driving a flashy car, wearing decent clothes, running around with numbers, like Kay Miller out there. Well, a guy may stop living that way Sammy, but you can't tell me he ever stops wanting to". Sam asks "Why the sermon, Art? You just preaching or have you got something in mind?"

Counterspy - The Case of the Captured Contact
Wednesday Dec 31, 2025
Wednesday Dec 31, 2025
A phone call is made to the Counterspy offices in Washington. The caller says "Mr. Harding? Mr. David Harding?" Harry says "No, this is Mr. Harding's assistant, Harry Peters". The caller says "I am calling from Baltimore. I must speak to Mr. Harding in person. Did he not receive my letter?" Harry asks "Who is this, please?" The caller says "I signed the letter only with the name, Roland". Harry says "Just a moment", and transfers the call. David says "Harding speaking". The caller says "Mr. Harding, this is Roland. You received my letter, no?" Harding says "I'd like to know who you really are". Roland says "Full details I cannot give over the telephone, but I give a name, Dr. Maximo. I have been in your country lecturing on Bacteriology. My real purpose was something else, and now I realize I have been making a terrible mistake for years. I can correct it only one way, to tell everything to the United States Counterspies". Harding says "Well, you're only forty five minutes from Washington by train". Dr. Maximo says "Oh no, I do not dare move from this hotel room. My life...." Harding asks "What hotel?" Maximo says "The Gainsborough, Room 819. I beg you to come, Mr. Harding, what I must tell you is of the first importance". Harding says "Well, I'll see about it, Dr. Maximo, good bye" and hangs up the phone. Maximo then calls the hotel front desk and says "Young lady, this is Mr. Jones in Room 819. You have, I believe it is called, a house detective, Mr. Blaine is his name? I believe my life is in danger. Would you please ask him to come to my room at once?" Later, after Harding and Peters listen to a three year old recording of a socialist's speech given in Paris, and compare it to the recording of Dr. Maximo's call from earlier that day, they conclude that it is the same man's voice. Harding says "Well Peters, if this man is ready, as he says, to turn against his masters in Catania, we'd better go see him”.

Whitehall 1212 - The Case of Sydney Wolfe
Tuesday Dec 30, 2025
Tuesday Dec 30, 2025
Chief Inspector Leslie Cameron Underhill of Scotland Yard is called to Margate, a seaside town in the Thanet District of Kent, by authority of the Chief Constable who had asked for the CID's help. Inspector Charles Hatcher, of the Margate Police, informed Underhill as to what was happening. Hatcher says "We've got him safe in jail on a charge of unlawfully obtaining credit. We shall be able to put our hands on him when we want him, alright". Underhill says "I don't understand what you need a CID man for a charge like that one, a misdemeanor". Hatcher says "Inspector, it isn't a misdemeanor we want him for, sir. It's murder. We can't prove it, of course, yet. So, we can't charge the blighter, but as long as he's in jail, we can look about a bit, and we're hoping that perhaps you can find out if we're right in our suspicions". Underhill asks "What's it all about? I know nothing, of course". Hatcher says "Well, he did the hotel people, the Metropole, here in Margate, out of 8 pounds, and 13 shillings, food and lodging for himself and the old lady for a week. Then, he got an advance of 40 pounds on her insurance". Underhill asks "Was she dead?" Hatcher says "Of course, in the fire". Underhill asks "What fire?" Hatcher says "When her room caught on fire, last week". Underhill asks "What happened?" Hatcher says "She died. Suffocated. Carbon dioxide, smoke, etc. Two doctors certified her dead by misadventure. He took her away to bury her, but instead he rushed up to Norwich". Underhill asks "Did he bury her at Norwich?" Hatcher says "Her home was at Great French, but he didn't go there. He went to Norwich, where the headquarters of the insurance company is located. There he got an advance of 40 pounds, but he didn't bother to come back here and pay his bills". Underhill says "Ah, I see. You arrested him there and brought him back here". Hatcher says "He's in jail here now, awaiting trial on the fraud charge". Underhill says "Well, then...." Hatcher says "We have an idea that the old lady didn't set herself on fire accidentally". Underhill says "You think he murdered her for her insurance?" Hatcher says "With your assistance, we hope to prove that".

Cloak and Dagger - The Roof of the World
Tuesday Dec 30, 2025
Tuesday Dec 30, 2025
After a lecture on prehistoric animals at the Museum of Natural History, Philip and Ester Malden receive a telegram from the Office of Strategic Services in Washington. Ester says "Now why in the world do they want us?" Philip says "Well, there's one way to find out". Later, in Washington, they are meeting with an OSS Colonel. He says "Mr. and Mrs. Malden, we know your reputation as geologists and explorers. We know you've traveled the Far East together several times. Now, at this stage of the war, Germany is pushing eastward across Africa to Suez, and Japan is thrusting westward across China into India. If the Axis partners meet, their junction will be Central Asia, and dominating that meeting point will be Tibet". Ester asks "What do you want us to do, Colonel?" He says "We want volunteers to make a pilgrimage to the Dalai Lama, High Priest of Tibet. It'll be a goodwill mission to get them on our side. It involves a great deal of danger". Philip says "Yes, yes, we know. Esther?" She says "I'm willing". A few weeks later, the Malden's were flown to India where we were given a car. Soon, their tour was started out across the border to a small village at the foot of the Himalaya Mountains. Once there, they were to pick up pack animals, a guide, and to start our journey to the holy city. Once underway, Philip says "These roads couldn't have been any narrower or any rockier". Ester says "Well, they weren't designed for modern travel". Philip says "You can say that again". Ester asks "Phil, are you worried about something?" He says "This is the worst possible time of the year to be traveling up that mountain. It's almost spring up there, and the thaw is setting in. It's going to loosen the snow and ice all along the way". Ester says "Well, we'll just have to be more careful, that's all". After a few seconds, Ester says "Oh, Phil, look, round the bend of the road. That's the village, isn't it?" Phil says "Yes, that's it". Ester says "Wait a minute, Phil. Slow down. Look". Phil says "Good Lord". Ester says "I should have said, it was a village". Phil says "It's been burned to the ground".

Jimmy Saunders, brother of a professional baseball player, is called in to have a meeting with Rully Carter, owner of a gambling house. As Jimmy walks into Carter's office, he says "You wanted to see me, Mr. Carter?" Carter says "I sure do". Jimmy says "Well, if it's about the fifty thousand I owe you, I don't have it". Carter says "Oh well, in that case Jimmy, maybe you shouldn't be allowed at the roulette tables again until you've paid up". Jimmy says "Oh but, Mr. Carter, you can't do that to me. My luck will change. Give me a chance, will you?" Carter says "A chance? Oh come now, Jimmy, you're into me for fifty thousand. But, um, I'll tell you what I will do. Your brother, Sammy, is one of the best baseball players in the league, right?" Jimmy says "Well sure, but what's he got to do with this? Look, I don't want him to know, you understand, I don't want him to know that I've been gambling". Carter says "Oh he won't, he won't. Now, uh, if you introduce your brother to a certain young lady, I'll forget that you owe me a dime. How's that?" Jimmy says "Just to introduce my brother to a girl and you'll tear up my IOUs for that?" Carter says "Yeah". Jimmy says "Gee, I don't get it". Carter says "You don't have to, but I don't get my fifty thousand either. What do you say?" Jimmy says "Mr. Carter, I don't know what this is all about...." Carter says "But you'll do it. That's being a good boy, Jimmy. That's being a smart boy, too. Yeah, maybe the smartest you've ever been".

The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes - The Noble Bachelor
Sunday Dec 28, 2025
Sunday Dec 28, 2025
Doran, an American mining millionaire, is wanting his beautiful, but spirited, daughter Hattie to be wed to the noble bachelor himself, Lord St. Simon. Doran's wealth will help to fill the coffers of the St. Simon family, who's fortunes have been in a state of decline. Doran knows that Lord St. Simon is one of England’s most noble aristocrats, and the marriage to his daughter, Hattie Doran, will bring about a slight sense of nobility to his own family. Doran is currently speaking with Hattie about the marriage, who seems a little less than enthusiastic about the idea. Hattie says "No, it's ridiculous". Doran says "It's exactly what I always wanted for you". Hattie says "It's what you always wanted. When did you care about what I wanted?" Doran says "If we had done what you wanted, my girl, you'd be stuck away somewhere in a two bit hovel without a cent to your name". Hattie says "That's the only thing you care about, isn't it? Well, I don't give a damn about money". Hattie stops to think for a few seconds, and says "Pa, it isn't working. None of it. I can't do it. Let's go home". Doran says "You don't want to go home". Hattie says "I don't know what I want". Doran says "All I want is the best for you. You know that. Look, the past is gone. You can't bring it back". Hattie says "I know". Doran says "You've got to think about the future. You're twenty four years old". Hattie says "I know that too, damn it". Doran says "Hattie, this kind of chance, it will not come your way again. Don't you like him at all?" Hattie says "I like him well enough". Doran says "Then, promise me you'll think about it, at least. That's all I'm asking. Just think about it". Hattie says "Alright, I'll think about it". Soon, St. Simon proposes marriage and Hattie accepts. Sometime later, the wedding ceremony takes place without an issue, however, during the subsequent wedding breakfast, Hattie, visibly upset, excuses herself and runs toward her room. Seconds later, Lord St. Simon goes to her room to look for her and finds that she is not there. In fact, after a complete search of her father's home and grounds, it seems she has disappeared completely.

The Line-Up - The Wild, Wild Woman Case
Saturday Dec 27, 2025
Saturday Dec 27, 2025
Sergeant Dave Asher enters the line-up audience room and sees Lieutenant Ben Guthrie. He says "Hi Ben. Has your victim shown up yet?" Guthrie says "No, I'm still waiting". Sergeant Matt Grebb begins, as he normally does, by giving the instructions to the witnesses. Just as Guthrie is about to leave, Mr. Chadwick, the victim, shows up. As Guthrie introduces Chadwick to Sergeant Asher, Grebb starts asking the line-up questions to the inmates. Later, Guthrie is in his office as Grebb enters. Guthrie says "Hi, you finished already?" Grebb says "Yeah, not many today. Chadwick didn't come through, huh?" Guthrie says "No. Take a look at this". Guthrie shows Grebb a list of the jewelry store robberies. Grebb asks "All these places?" Guthrie says "Yep, the MO (modus operandi) is exactly the same. They pick out a little neighborhood jewelry store. She stays on the outside, he goes inside and cleans out the place. They hit once and scram to the next town". Grebb says "Ben, these descriptions are all pretty much alike, including the one we got from Chadwick. Hey, what about that? John Tynan was number three in the line-up earlier. I thought sure he was our boy". Guthrie says "Well, let's keep hauling them in". Grebb says "Okay". At that moment, Guthrie gets a phone call from the Chief of Police in Denver. After a few seconds on the phone, Guthrie says "Hold on". He turns to Grebb and says "Matt, what about Tynan?" Grebb says "He's back at the city jail. He's going to be arraigned on having a concealed weapon this afternoon". Guthrie relays that information to the caller, and hangs up. He says "Tynan may still be our boy, Matt. The Chief of Police in Denver wants us to hold him. A jewelry store man there identified the picture we put on the wire last night. Get Chadwick up here. He's down there looking through the mug files".

The Chase - Blackout
Saturday Dec 27, 2025
Saturday Dec 27, 2025
The patient is in a hospital bed on a gray December morning. He seem to awake behind a curtain of gauze, with a mind that was enshrouded in darkness. He hears a voice that says "Pulse 92, blood pressure 140 over 80, temperature normal. not too bad. Oh, you're awake". The patient says "Yes, I think so". The voice asks "How do you feel?" The patient says "I don't know". The voice says "I'm Dr. Scott". The patient asks "Dr. Scott, am I ill?" Scott says "You were, for 16 weeks". The patient asks "Where am i now?" Scott says "The General Hospital. It seems to me you've been here since they laid the cornerstone". Patient asks "What happened to me? Why do I have all this gauze on my head?" Scott says "You were hit by a car, squarely. Incidentally, it was your own fault, You were crossing the street against the lights while intoxicated. Now, perhaps you'd like to introduce yourself". Patient asks "You mean you don't know who i am?" Scott says "No. Do you?" Patient says "Of course". Scott says "Fine. Who are you?" Patient says "Why, I'm.... uh.... but this is ridiculous. I mean I know who I am". Scott says "I'm afraid you don't. Uh, nurse, luminol, half grain. Here, take this with water". Patient asks "What is it?" Scott says "Something to keep you calm while we talk". The patient takes the medicine. Scott says "That's a good chap. Now, listen to me. I think you're well enough to understand the facts. First of all, you're suffering from amnesia. You've had a complete blackout. At the moment, neither of us knows just who you are or where you came from". Patient asks "But, my clothes? Wasn't any identification in my clothes?" Scott says "When we picked you up, you were wearing a shirt and a pair of trousers. That's all. You'd lost your overcoat and jacket somewhere". Patient asks "You've never been able to identify me?" Scott says "No. You've been in and out of the ether three times since the accident, but this is the first time you've been rational enough to answer questions".

Lux Radio Theater - It's a Wonderful Life
Wednesday Dec 24, 2025
Wednesday Dec 24, 2025
This is the story of George Bailey, a citizen of Bedford Falls, New York. George Bailey who more than anything under the sun wanted to see the world. The wonderful exciting world that lays somewhere beyond the limits of his home town. Oddly enough, this story does not begin in Bedford Falls. In fact, it doesn't begin anywhere in the world. It begins in heaven, where the Superintendent of Angels has just summoned an apprentice angel named Clarence. He asks "I'm really going down to earth, sir? Oh, how splendid". The Superintendent says "Yes, there's a very discouraged man down there, Clarence. His name is George Bailey. At exactly 10:45 PM. earth time, he will be thinking seriously of ending his life. Now, I want you to stop him, if you can. Now, sit down, and I'll give you Bailey's case history". Clarence asks "Sir, if I should accomplish my mission, may I perhaps get my wings? I've been waiting over two hundred years now, and well, people are beginning to talk". The Superintendent says "Clarence, what's that book?" Clarence says "It's The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, sir. I was reading it when you sent for me". The Superintendent says "Oh, fine book, excellent. Well, you do a good job on George Bailey, and we will see about your wings. Now listen, when George Bailey was a boy, two events occurred that you should keep in mind. One was when his young brother Harry fell through the ice and almost drowned. George jumped in and saved him. Ever since, George had a bad ear. All that icy water.... you understand. The other event came a few months later. George worked after school at Mr. Gower's Drugstore. One day, Mr. Gower received a letter saying that his son had died of influenza. In his grief over the loss, Mr. Gower made a terrible mistake with a prescription, but, thankfully, George did not make that delivery.

Let George Do It - The High Price of a Penny
Tuesday Dec 23, 2025
Tuesday Dec 23, 2025
George receives a letter that reads "Dear Mr. Valentine, I'm a prematurely retired lawyer and tax consultant. Neighbors of mine out here in the Fish Lake country, their name is Mum, elderly man and wife, spent a penny once a number of years ago on a lollipop. Let me tell you, the price of that penny is going to be more than a million dollars. In plain words, those nice people are going to be taken. But, I think you and I can stop the swindle with a diamond bracelet. Now here's what I'd like you to do. Telephone the Mums. Tell them you're friends of mine and would like to come visit the country. They know there isn't room for you to stay in my place. Maybe you can't do any good, but at least you can wear down your teeth for a change, biting on the penny. Sincerely, Amos W. Fell". George says "Hmm, spoken like a lawyer". Brooksie says "He certainly has a lot of faith in you, doesn't he?" George says "Million dollar penny, diamond bracelet, lollipops?". Brooksie says "Faith in your curiosity". George says "Well, come on, Brooksie, hand me the phone". George calls the Mum's residence and someone answers the phone. George introduces himself and wants to talk to Mr. and Mrs. Mum. The voice on the line says "Look, Mr. Valentine, they're not home". George asks "Well, when will the Mums be home?" The voice says "When they get tired of being where they are now. And don't ask me where that is, because I don't know". George asks "Well, who's this speaking? One of the servants?" The voice says "Mister, just call back later, will you?" George says "But I'm a friend of Mr. Amos Fell and I wanted to talk...." The voice says "And the housekeeper isn't here either. Sure, sure, Mr. Valentine. I'll be a good boy. I'll write it all down". George says "You're too kind". The voice says "Yeah, and don't be insulted. I'm right in the middle of a poker game and my luck isn't good. My name is Clifford. I'm the Mum's nephew. I've come to live here for a while, so don't worry, they'll get your message all right". George says "Clifford, huh?" He says "Yeah, yeah. Good night. Keep him rolling" and hangs up the phone. George says "Brooksie, maybe there is a penny. A bad penny". Brooksie asks "With the name of Clifford?" George says "Yeah, come on. We're not going to wait for an invitation".

Mr. Barrett Keller, the bank president, is picking up his girlfriend, Jean Raymond, from her job at the theater, in his chauffeured limousine. As she approaches the car, Joe, the chauffer says "Good evening, Miss". She says "Good evening". As she climbs into the backseat, Keller says "Hello". She says "How are you, darling? Hope I didn't keep you waiting too long". Keller says "You're the one who has three shows to do, not me". Joe asks "Where to Mr. Keller?" He says "The Midnight Club, Joseph". Joe says "Yes, sir". Jean says "My, how swank we are tonight". Keller says "Oh, that's right, You've never seen the car before, have you?" Jean says "Well, I never thought the day would come when little Jean turned her nose up at a cab, but after this, I don't know. What type of car have we got? Some fancy foreign make or just a crummy old Rolls?" Keller says "I can see I should have brought the car more often". Jean says "You can say that again. But, I suppose Mrs. Keller has some rights. After all, the wife of a big bank president can't just ride around in any old thing". Keller says "I guess that's about the size of it. Are you cold?" Jean says "With this over me? If the minks don't feel cold, why should I?" Keller says "You like the coat, huh?" Jean says "You know something, honey, you're going to spoil me, furs, jewelry, a chauffeured limo for a five block ride". Keller says "I want to spoil you, Jean. I want to give you everything you ever longed for". Jean says "Well, I got quite a list". Joe says "The Midnight Club, sir". Jean asks "Aren't you coming in to see the show?" Keller says "I've seen it, let's see, about fifty times". Jean says "Afterword?" Keller says "No, not tonight". Jean says "Why not?" Keller says "I thought we agreed, no questions". Jean says "Sorry". Keller says "It's alright, Joseph, I'll see Miss Raymond in". Keller escorts her into the club, then comes back to the car. As they leave, Joe says "Nice dish". Keller says "Told you". Joe says "Nothing like seeing for yourself. Where to?" Keller says "The bus stop on Fifth Street. I can hop out there". Joe says "If you're going uptown to the gambling joint, I guess I could take you". Keller says" No, you've done enough already, Joe. I can't thank you enough". Joe says "Forget it. What my boss doesn't know, won't hurt him".

Escape - When the Man Comes, Follow Him
Monday Dec 22, 2025
Monday Dec 22, 2025
Mr. Heineman is a smart racket boss in San Francisco. The other mobsters in the city respected him and stayed out of his territory. Heineman was also cultured. He loved music, and loved playing the violin. He treated the men who worked for him well, especially the one named Pascal. Heineman trusted Pascal, because for the past fifteen years, Mr. Heineman has been completely blind. Currently, in Mr. Heineman's top floor apartment, Pascal is looking out of his picture window. Heineman says "Come on, Pascal. Eyes, man. Give me eyes". Pascal says "It's foggy down there, boss. I can't see the bay". Heineman says "What about the street below us? What's going on down there? Pascal says "Nothing. Just street cars and taxis going up and down with a few people. Not very many". Heineman says "Alright, forget it. You can come away from the window. I just have a feeling that something's going to happen". Pascal asks "Happen? What's gonna happen?" Heineman says "I don't know. Something". Just then, the telephone rang. Pascal says "I'll get it, boss. After a few seconds, Pascal says "That was the manager. Your brother's here from Phoenix". Heineman says "Mark? He's downstairs?" Pascal says "Yeah, he's on his way up. The manager couldn't stop him. He says he looks like he's in pretty bad shape" Heineman says "Ever see a desert rat that didn't?" Pascal says "No. I wonder what he wants". Heineman says "Money, as usual. Three or four hundred dollars will finance another six months of prospecting". After a few seconds, Heineman says "I can hear the elevator stopping. Better open the door" Mark staggers to the door and says "Help me". Pascal says "Boss, he's hurt herself. He's weak and trembling. He's holding on to the door frame with his right hand, and holding his chest with the other hand. I think he's been shot, boss". Mark says "Yes, shot. Help me". Pascal helps Mark to the couch. Heineman asks "What happened, Mark?" Mark says "I had to get here. I want you to have it. So he can't". Heineman says "Pascal, get Brian and Daly over here. Brian knows a lot about gunshot wounds. Who shot you Mark?"

The Black Museum - The Jack Handle
Monday Dec 22, 2025
Monday Dec 22, 2025
During the war, London lived in the blackout, and many American soldiers found their after-dark amusement in tiny hole-in-the-wall cafes. Small places with a few tables, not much light, and the blackout curtains. The girl singing is pretty in a tawdry sort of way, but the two young men, named Ted and Tom, in the American uniforms don't seem to mind. Ted says "How's about it, Tom? Not bad for a dive?" Tom says "Not too bad. Five will get you ten, it's out of bounds" Ted says "Not yet. it just opened. The MP's haven't cased the joint yet". Their interest shifts, and quite naturally, of course, to the singer. Tom says "She's not too bad. Maybe she dates". Ted says "You wouldn't know what to do about it if she does". Tom says "Says who?" Ted says "Says me. What did you do, stateside, anyway?" Tom says "I worked in a bank. So what? I got along. I did all right". Ted says "Hiding in the Army?" Tom says "Hiding in the.... oh, maybe. Could be. Look, Teddy, what you don't know won't hurt you, see". Ted asks "That apply to Gracie?" Tom says "Gracie? You mean the babe?" Ted says "Who else? Grace Harwell". Tom asks "You know her?" Ted says "I met her a couple of times". He calls her over to their table. Gracie says "Well, Teddy, the yank who thought he'd take Soho single-handed". Ted says "Sit down, Gracie. What'll you have?" She says "My regular. Who's your friend?" Ted says "Oh, meet Private Tom Bennett, Gracie Harwell". Tom says "Hi". She says "Hello, soldier". Ted gets up and says "Let me get you a drink, Gracie", and goes toward the bar. Tom says "Grace?" She says "Yeah?" Tom says "How would you like to help me win a bet?" Gracie says "Well, this is a new approach". Tom says "Good. Now, look, all I need to win, is a date with you, see, for tomorrow night. Well, how about it? After the show?" Gracie asks "You on furlough?" Tom says "Maybe. Maybe not. I'll be in town tomorrow night". She asks "Got a car with petrol?" Tom says "No, but I will have". She says "You said it like you meant it". Tom says "I will have a car and gas". Gracie says "I'm not saying for sure, but be outside at one o'clock in the morning. You may win your bet"

Mr. Henry Corwin, normally unemployed, who once a year takes the lead role in the uniquely American institution, that of the department store Santa Claus. However, he has just spent his break time in the bar across the street, and is late returning to his temporary position. Mr. Dundee, the department store manager, says "You're an hour late". Corwin says "I am?" Dundee says "One hour and nine minutes to be exact. Now I advise you to get up on your throne without further ado". Corwin says I'm going, I'm going". Dundee says "And refrain from disillusioning these children any further". Corwin says "All right, all right, I'm going". Dundee says "By showing them that not only isn't there a Santa Claus, but the one in this store happens to be a wino who'd be more at home playing Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer". Corwin says "I take your point, Mr Dundee. Stand aside, Saint Nick is back on the job". A mother with a young boy says "Go ahead climb up on his lap. He won't hurt you, will you Santa? You won't hurt my little boy. Go on, you tell him what you want for Christmas". Santa asks "What's your name, lad?" The boy says "Percival". Santa says "You're putting me on". The boy says "Percival Smithers, the third. My dad's name was Percival Smithers, and my grandfather's name was Percival Smithers". Santa says "Oh, I get it. Well, I guess that's not your fault. So, what would you like for Christmas, young Percival?" He says "A new front name". Santa laughs and says "That's a good one. A real good one. I got to remember it". Percival says "Hey Ma, I smell something funny". His mother says "You do?" Percival says "Yeah, and I know what it is too. The same as Dad. Santa Claus is loaded". His mother says "Leave my boy alone!" Santa says "Lady, I never laid a glove on the kid". She says "Oh, you've got some nerve, drinking on the job!" Santa says "Madam, I am morally ashamed". She says "You should be. Come along, Percival. I hope this won't scar you for life".

Mr. Chameleon - The Case of Murder and the Man Who Saw Too Much
Saturday Dec 20, 2025
Saturday Dec 20, 2025
At twilight, in that lively section of New York City where Broadway crosses Columbus Circle, already electric signs are flashing in the dark and the sidewalks are swarming with hurrying masses. Lost in that crowd is the figure of a man stalking another man like a panther stalking its prey, until suddenly the air is shattered by a cry of pain and terror. The victim says "I've been stabbed! I've been, oh, stabbed!" Millicent, standing nearby, says "Oh, no. How ghastly!" She asks her fiancée "Wilfred, did you see that?" Wilfred says "Yes I saw it, and I saw the man who stabbed him! Catch him, catch him somebody, the man in the gray suit! Don't let him get away!" Someone asks "What's happened?" Another man nearby says "It's murder! A man's been stabbed to death! Somebody said a man in a gray suit did it!". Sometime later, at Central Police Headquarters, the Police Commissioner is talking to Mr. Chameleon about the incident. The Commissioner says "That's all we have to go on, Chameleon. Some unidentified man who was with a woman cried out that a man in a gray suit did it. Chameleon says "Well that's something, Commissioner. Maybe the two witnesses will come forward and give us a more complete description of the killer". Commissioner says "Yeah, but you know how people are scared to death to get involved in a thing like this". Chameleon says "Certainly the killer wasn't lacking a nerve, stabbing a man to death in the early evening on a crowded street". Commissioner says "And a man like Carl Lynch". Chameleon says "Yes, we belong to several of the same clubs. Carl Lynch was a wealthy bachelor, high up in the banking business, and a patron of the arts. The killer had his nerve to strike him down right under the nose of the police". Commissioner says "That seems to annoy you, Chameleon". He says "Well, certainly it does. It's been three hours since Lynch was murdered. The witnesses really should turn up very soon, for their sake. They should come to the police. The longer they stay away, the more dangerous it is for everyone".

The Adventures of Philip Marlowe - The Dancing Hands
Saturday Dec 20, 2025
Saturday Dec 20, 2025
After a long and roundabout day, Philip Marlowe found a telegram stuck in his mail slot when he got back to his office. The telegram read "Enclosed, find a 50 dollar money order. I want you to investigate a man. A table is reserved for you at the Saddle Club where I work. Come in time for the second show at 11:00 PM, important. Signed, Beth Tyler". So, at a quarter to 11:00, Marlowe drove over the Cahuenga Freeway and ventured out to the Saddle Club, Quickly after entering, Neil Redmond, owner and operator of the place, came toward Marlowe, sporting his genial host smile, which seemed even more forced than usual. Neil says "How are you, Marlowe? It's been a long time. Business or pleasure?" Marlowe says "It's always a pleasure to come to the Saddle Club, Neil. I've even got a reservation". Neil says "You know my food better than that, Marlowe. Just don't let it get rough, will you? Come on, I'll find your table out front. I want you to see this show. A pair of twins in a twin piano act that's sensational". Marlowe says "Yeah?" Neil says "Edie and Beth Tyler. Incidentally, Edie will be the one on the left". Marlowe says "What, they're twins? What's the difference?" Neil says "Funny. Edie may be Mrs. Redmond one of these days". Just then, one of his employee says to Neil "You are wanted on the phone, sir". Neil says "Get the number, George, and I'll call back". George says "This gentleman said you would talk to him, sir. It is Mr. Paul Sider". Neil says "Paul Sider? Oh, yeah, excuse me, Marlowe, this is important". Marlowe noticed that Neil reacted to the name "Sider" like a punch in the nose, but that was none of his business, which was more than he could say for a flabby, dull-faced character sitting at the next table, who followed the nightclub owner all the way out of the room with a pair of watery red eyes. But at that point, an emcee stepped out on the stage, so Marlowe stopped worrying about flabby in favor of a first look at my client. The emcee says "The Saddle Club is now to present its second show of evening, featuring the incomparable piano stylists, Edie and Beth in Dancing Hands".

The Whistler - Malice
Friday Dec 19, 2025
Friday Dec 19, 2025
Dr. Jacob Benton is the wealthiest citizen in the town, as well as its most prominent physician and surgeon. He is also proud of the fact that he comes from a long line of highly successful surgeons. His greatest ambition is that his son, Tom, will follow in his footsteps and carry on the family tradition. Jacob also has a nephew, Harvey, the son of his brother, George, who married a girl from the wrong side of the town. Later, George disappeared, leaving Jacob to take care of his young son. After finishing high school, Tom and Harvey entered medical school. Harvey followed through and is to graduate next week. But Jacob's son, Tom, at the end of his third year, wandered over to the east bottoms at the lower end of town and met a girl. He lost interest in medicine and refused to go back to school. After a late night, Jacob sees Tom returning home, and asks him "Where have you been? It's two o'clock in the morning". Tom says "I've been to a house party". Jacob says "Where? On the other side of town?" Tom says "Yes. In the east bottoms". Jacob says "You've seen that girl, that Nita again, haven't you?" Tom says "Yes. What of it?" Jacob says "I've told you time and again that you don't belong over there, with her". Tom says "I like Nita because she's honest and genuine. She's not filled with a lot of silly ideas like Eloise". Jacob says "Eloise is a fine girl. She belongs to an excellent family". Tom says "Oh bosh. Eloise is a phony. Nita is a real person". Jacob says "If you become serious about this girl, you'll be ostracized". Tom says "I know. I know all about poor Uncle George. He went over to the east bottoms and met a girl and went to the dogs. But it wasn't the girl, he was no good in the first place". Jacob says "He was a stubborn fool just like you. Are you in love with this girl?" Tom says "Yes". Jacob says "I'm terribly disappointed in you, Tom. You were wrapped up in your studies until you met her. This girl has made a fool of you. Oh, I could kill her". Tom says "I think I'd better go to bed. Good night". Jacob says "Good night, young idiot. As Tom leaves the room. Jacob says to himself "Something's got to be done about this, at once".

The Man Called X - Operation Fifty
Friday Dec 19, 2025
Friday Dec 19, 2025
It was in 1945 in the Mauthausen concentration camp in Germany that the Man Called X first learned of the existence of the Himmler plates, but it was not until five years later that he heard of them again when a phone call came into the Bureau from Uruguay Intelligence in Montevideo. Inspector Reza says "I tell you Senor Thurston, there can be no mistake". Ken asks "What about the scroll work, Inspector?" He says "Well, there are slight irregularities in the lower left corner". Ken asks "And in the serial numbers?" The Inspector says "The figure four is closed rather than being open". Ken says "Thanks for informing us, Inspector. I'll join you in Montevideo in twenty four hours. Adios, Inspector". Ken hangs up the phone and says "Chief, they've turned up again, the Himmler plates". Chief says "The Himmler plates? Good Lord, Ken." Ken says "I see you remember them". Chief says "How could I forget them. Why those Nazi engraving plates turned out the most perfect counterfeit American fifty dollar bills ever made". Ken says "That's right. Hitler's gang used millions of dollars worth to buy war materials from neutral nations". Chief says "But Ken, we found records stating that the plates had been destroyed". Ken says "What if the records were faked and the Himmler plates were smuggled out of Germany?" Chief says "Well, if they were, this will be a job for the Treasury, not for the Bureau". Ken says "The Inspector says the bills are being passed in Montevideo by a bureau agent". Chief says "Well, that's impossible. We don't have any men assigned down there". Ken says "That's right, Chief". The Chief turns on the intercom and says "Miss Brooks, book passage for Ken Thurston on the first plane to Montevideo, Uruguay". Ken says "Thanks, Chief. I'll be seeing you. By the way, you want me to give your regards to Pagon?" Chief says What's that chiseling crook got to do with this?" Ken says "Oh, didn't I tell you? Our non-existent agent down there is Pagon Zeldschmitt".

Thursday Dec 18, 2025
Thursday Dec 18, 2025
At 3:55 PM, Captain Frank Cannelli, commander of the 21st Precinct Police Department, came in to the station for his night tour, which would keep him on the job until 8:00 AM of the following morning. As he signed in on the blotter, Sergeant Burns, who was filling in as the desk officer, told him that Mr. Bally, the Acting Superintendent of buildings of the department, was in the house making a routine inspection. Cannelli went upstairs and found Mr. Bally on the third floor. Cannelli called his attention to the cracked plaster in the hall ceiling on that floor and to the fact that during the last winter the radiators failed to heat the floor comfortably. On the way down, Cannelli showed him the worn condition of the stairs from the second floor to the back room. He also spoke to him about the plumbing difficulties in the cells. Later, in the Muster Room, Mr. Bally says "Well, thanks Captain". Canelli asks "Do you have any idea when these repairs will be made?" He says "Well, there's a lot of work to do, Captain. There are nearly one hundred buildings in the department and most of them need work, lots of work". Canelli says "Oh yes, I understand that but some need attention sooner than others, don't you think?" Bally says "Oh yes, some do, that's why I'm making the inspection". Cannelli says "Well, this muster room, for instance, hasn't been painted since 1941. Did you realize that?" Mr. Bally says "Captain, you know I'd like to do everything and I'd like to do it right away but there's been only so much money appropriated. Well, it's been a pleasure, Captain. I need to sign the blotter and get on my way. I'm a little bit behind schedule". As Bally is about to leave, Cannelli says "What's doing Sergeant?" Kline says "Oh nothing much, Captain, except that young fellow over there is waiting to see you". Cannelli asks "Who is he? Do you know?" Kline says "He says his name is Harold Wheel". Cannelli says "I'll speak with him". Cannelli walks over and says "Mr. Wheel, what can I do for you?" Wheel says "Well listen, Captain I'm sorry to bother you, but I got an awful problem. It's my kid". Cannelli asks "What's the trouble?" Wheel says "Well, she got bit by a dog".

Richard Diamond, Private Detective - The Thomas Jason Case
Thursday Dec 18, 2025
Thursday Dec 18, 2025
A man named Thomas Jason, a retired stockbroker, has stopped by Richard's office to hire him. Richard says "What is your problem Mr. Jason? He says "It's Carol, my adopted daughter. We adopted her when she was twelve, but my wife died shortly after. Frankly, Carol has been in trouble ever since". Richard asks "And now?" Jason says "Now, I'm afraid it is no longer a matter of delinquency. Well, there have been several incidents that make me suspect that she's trying to do away with me". Richard says "Sweet girl. What's her reason?" Jason says "My money. In my will, she is my only heir". Richard asks "Why not change the will?" Jason says "I said I suspected her, but I'm not certain, Mr. Diamond. And you understand, it would be terrible to disinherit her If I am wrong about my suspicions, I simply must be sure before I change my will". Richard asks "She have any idea of your suspicion?" Jason says "Yes. This morning I did speak to her. I mentioned the possibility of cutting her from my will. She flew into a rage, made several terrible threats". Richard says "Oh, what do you want me to do?" Jason says "Well, sir, I want you to either prove my fears to be true or groundless. If I am right, I will change my will, of course". Richard says "Where do I start?" Jason says "Come to my house at three o'clock this afternoon. Here's the address. I'll introduce you to my stepdaughter, Carol, as a business acquaintance. After you've met and talked with her, I'll give you what details I have about her threats and actions. Richard says "Okay, Mr. Jason. I'll be there". Having some extra time before the meeting, Richard stopped by the Fifth Precinct to talk to Lieutenant Walt Levinson. Richard says "I just wanted to see if you had any information on the Thomas Jason family". Levinson says "There's nothing on him, but plenty on his step daughter Carol". Richard says "Like what?" Levinson says "She's a regular. Usually D&D, drunk driving, disturbing the peace". Later, at the Jason residence for the meeting, Richard was ushered into the library. Soon, Carol comes in to the room and says "I'm afraid you can't see him, Mr. Diamond. You see, he's become quite ill".

Barrie Craig, Confidential Investigator - Fog Over Murder
Wednesday Dec 17, 2025
Wednesday Dec 17, 2025
For Barrie Craig, this was an unusual assignment. He was contacted by a psychiatrist named Dr. Vanner in regards to the identity of one of his patients. At their meeting, Dr. Vanner says "This is an unusual thing for me, Mr. Craig, to consult with a detective". Barrie says "This is an unusual joint for me to be in, so we're even". Vanner says "Now, this patient that I will discuss with you, I've worked with him for months with encouraging results". Barrie says "Start off with his name". Vanner says "His name is temporarily Clark Smith". Barrie says "Temporarily?" Vanner says "A symptom of his ailment is amnesia. He resists his own true identity". Barrie says "He doesn't want to remember who he is, huh?" Vanner says "Yes, in a manner of speaking". Barrie says "That's bad". Vanner asks "Well, why do you say that?" Barrie says "From a cop's point of view, disregarding the medicine, a guy only tries to lose his identity for a pretty grim reason. Some crime he doesn't want to answer to". Vanner says "Oh, there is such a possibility, yes". Barrie asks "Still think you want to make a police case out of this Clark Smith?" Vanner says "Well, there is the risk that you suggest. I have thought of that. Restore this man to his own identity, but with an unhappy result". Barrie says "He faces the consequences of a crime. Capture, trial, and sentence". Vanner says "But if this risk is not taken, it's equally critical for Clark Smith". Barrie says "Meaning the shape he's presently in, huh?" Vanner says "Depressed, malingering, sick with anxieties, he cannot function as a social being. He hides from the world. Yes, he interests me, this Clark Smith. I would like to help him find himself. Help him to face his reality". Barrie says "Only your medicine goes just so far". Vanner says "I need a detective, such as you, to associate with the case. There are facts to ascertain, the special things in which you are a specialist, and in which my science is helpless".

CBS Radio Mystery Theater - Honeymoon with Death
Wednesday Dec 17, 2025
Wednesday Dec 17, 2025
Shortly after returning home, Jennifer says "It was a wonderful honeymoon, Howard. I can't tell you how much I enjoyed it. Adored it. But you know something? Howard, you know something?" Howard says "What, Jennifer?" Jennifer says "It's wonderful to be back home. These last ten days driving back from San Francisco, I kept thinking, when, oh when, will I be back in my own bedroom, in my own bed, in my own little old New York brownstone house? Oh, I shouldn't have said that, should I?" Howard asks "What? Said what, Jennifer?" Jennifer asks "Am I bothering you with all my chatter, Howard?" He says "Bothering me? How could you possibly bother me, sweetheart? I just trying to catch up with all that mail Margaret left on the living room table. Now tell me, what was it you shouldn't have said?" She says "What? Oh, I've forgotten". He says "Something about your own little old New York brownstone house". She says "Oh, what I meant, is that it's not just mine anymore. It's yours now, too". He says "And your sister Maggie's. You both inherited this old brownstone from your father. Though, I must say, I think that you, I mean, we have the better of the bargain". She asks "What do you mean? He says "I much prefer this top floor apartment. Don't you?" She says "Oh, yes. Luckily, Maggie always preferred the downstairs part. No climbing stairs". He says "Well, you can finish brushing your hair. I'll look at that mail in the living room". As Howard walks toward the living room, Jennifer says "Howard? What about the car? You think it's safe parked out in the street? He says "One night won't hurt". She says "I'd feel awful if anything happened to it. Howard? You locked the car, didn't you? Howard?" Jennifer walks toward the lining room and says "Can you hear me? I asked you...." Suddenly, Jennifer screams "Oh my God! Maggie come up here! Maggie help me! Howard has been murdered! Jennifer runs down the stairs and into the front yard. Maggie says "Come back into the house! Stop yelling and come back in. I'll call the doctor!" Jennifer goes into the house and says "I don't need the doctor, Howard is dead! He's been stabbed!" Maggie says "Sit down on the couch and try to control yourself. There is no one named Howard here".

The Lives of Harry Lime - The Third Woman
Tuesday Dec 16, 2025
Tuesday Dec 16, 2025
During his time in the military, Corporal Harry Lime was tasked with an important assignment. His first task was to meet with an Army Major. Later, while looking over Harry's file, the Major says "You know something Corporal Lime? If we could prove half of this stuff in your file you'd be celebrating your hundredth birthday in a military prison". Harry says "Yes, sir. I dare say so, sir". The Major says "Shut up and listen. You report to the address on this slip of paper. It's a tailor on Savile Road. The tailor has his instructions. He's to make you three suits, including the full soup and fish and the whole outfits, to be ready in 48 hours. Isn't that awful?" Harry says "Yes, sir". Major says "Wait a minute, it gets worse. You go to the Savoy Hotel. A room is reserved there for you. You'll register as a civilian, and for purposes of cutting red tape, you're going to be a civilian. Here are your papers. Look at them". Harry says "Yes, sir". Major says "See how you're traveling?" Harry says "Well, yes sir, but this must be a joke". Major says "Oh it's funny all right, but it's true. The Allied Command sending you on a holiday, Corporal Lime, and you're traveling as a civilian with the rank of full Colonel". Harry got his new suits and was sent to see Captain Smith. The meeting was set up for midnight, on the right side of Cleopatra's Needle in London. Later, at the meeting point, a man approaches Harry and asks him a set of three questions. Harry gave his answer to each. The man says "Splendid, Mr. Lime. All the answers are perfectly correct. Silly questions, and answers too, but it makes them easier to remember". Harry says "Right, if you say so, Captain Smith. Smith says "Well now, let's get down to cases. We've borrowed you from your people, Lime, because of your special qualifications, such as being able to speak several languages, your looks, a certain rather celebrated aptitude for the opposite sex, and a fair share of unmitigated gall". Harry says "Yes sir". Smith says "Don't call me sir. Remember this isn't the army and, not strictly speaking, this is another show. What do you think of spying Lime? Harry says "Well, I do not know. I've never tried".

The Adventures of Rocky Jordan - The Big Heist
Tuesday Dec 16, 2025
Tuesday Dec 16, 2025
In the afternoon, Rocky was walking toward the British Embassy in Cairo. One of his customers at the Tambourine last night accidentally left their passport behind, and Rocky was turning it over to the Consul, so that it could be returned to it's owner. Once Rocky arrived at the Embassy, he met with the Counsel Secretary, who was busy spreading red polish on her fingernails. She says "Yes, May I help you?" Rocky says "My name is Jordan. I run the Cafe Tambourine. One of your nationals left his passport in my place last night. Would you see to it that he gets it?" She says "Oh yes, just toss it on that pile. I think my nails are still wet. Oh thanks so much Mr. Jordan". Rocky says "Excuse me a moment Miss...." She says "Buckley, Helen Buckley". Rocky says "I couldn't help seeing that telegram lying on your desk. It says it's from MacLean. Could that be Freddie MacLean from London?" Miss Buckley says "Why, yes" Rocky says "He flew with the RAF? Flies British Transport now?" Miss Buckley says "Same one". Rocky says "We're old friends. We always get together every time he makes Cairo. He's coming in?" Miss Buckley says "Yes. Telegram says to keep Thursday night open". Rocky says "I don't like to break in on anything, but how about you and I meeting him at the airport together, and have supper on me. We can rehash old times a bit. Then, well you two can carry on from there". Miss Buckley says "Well...." Rocky says "It was just a suggestion, skip it". Miss Buckley says "No, no, it might even be fun. It's a date, Mr. Jordan" He says "Make it Rocky". Later that evening, Rocky and Helen Buckley are at the Cairo Airport when they hear the PA system announce "British Transport, Flight Six One, arriving now from London". Helen says "That should be Freddie's plane". The big plane taxied up to Gate Four, and passengers started to disembark. Then, all the crew came out. Freddie MacLean was not among them. Rocky and Helen ask a few questions, but no one knew anything. Just then, Rocky sees an armored car with two guards and Captain Sam Sabaya's police car.

Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar - The Saturday Night Matter
Tuesday Dec 16, 2025
Tuesday Dec 16, 2025
Johnny gets a call from Peter H. Filmore at the office of Surety Mutual Insurance Limited in Denver. He wants Johnny to investigate a racket that has been costing his company a lot of money. Johnny asks "What kind of a racket?" Filmore says "Robberies. Grocery store robberies. A whole series of them". Johnny asks "What's being taken? Cash or goods?" Filmore says "Cash, on Saturday nights with most discouraging regularity. But Dollar, with all the facts I can give you, well, I see no reason why you shouldn't be able to round up the gang that's doing this in short order". Johnny asks "You think there's a gang involved?" Filmore says "That's my conclusion, and I'm certain you'll agree with it when I give you the information I have. There also may be some danger involved in this investigation". Johnny says "Oh, that's the understatement of the week". Later, Johnny catches a flight from Hartford to Denver, and takes a taxi to the offices of Surety Mutual Insurance Limited. In a meeting with Peter Filmore, Johnny asks if the robberies have been taking place mainly in Denver. Filmore says "No, Dollar, all over the state in a regular pattern. A pattern that has finally enabled me to realize there is a connection between these robberies". Johnny says "Well, you better tell me all about it, Mr. Filmore". He says "Every robbery has occurred on a Saturday night". Johnny says "When the markets are likely to have more cash on hand". Filmore says "Exactly. The first robbery was right here in Denver. The next in Pueblo, then Colorado Springs, Aurora, Lakewood, Englewood, and Greeley. Last Saturday, a week ago tonight, the Casey Market over in Boulder was robbed. True to pattern". Johnny says "I'm afraid I don't quite see it". Filmore says "Well, Denver, the largest city in the state, then Pueblo, the next largest. Then Colorado Springs, next in size to Pueblo. Then Aurora, and so on down the line".

Mr. Keen, Tracer of Lost Persons - The Case of Murder and the Jewel Thief
Tuesday Dec 16, 2025
Tuesday Dec 16, 2025
The telephone in Mr. Keen's office is ringing, and Mike Clancy reaches for the receiver. Mike answers, and the voice on the line says "Is this Mr. Keen?" Mike says "No, this is his partner, Mike Clancy speaking". The voice says "May I talk to Mr. Keen? It's very important". Mike says "Well, who's calling, please?" The voice says "Tell him it's Mr. Carl Rollins". Mike says "Well, just a second. Mr. Keen, There's a fellow named Carl Rollins who wants a word with you. He says it's important". Keen says "All right, Mike, I'll take it. Hello?" Carl says "Mr. Keen, This is Carl Rollins. I've got to see you right away". Keen says "In regard to what, Mr. Rollins?" Carl says "Well, I can't talk about it now over the phone, but if it means anything to you, I'm also known as Kansas Carl". Keen says "Kansas Carl?" Mike says "Kansas Carl, the jewel thief the cops have been after for months?" Keen says "Just a moment, Mike. Mr. Rollins, where are you calling from?" Carl says "My room's on 10th Street, number 892, apartment 4D". Keen says "Alright, you'll wait there for me?" Carl says "Yes, I'll...." Suddenly, gunshots are heard over the phone. Keen says "Mr. Rollins, Hello? Hello?" Mike asks "What happened, boss? Keen says "I heard revolver shots, Mike. We've got to get over to Rollins' apartment right away". A few minutes later, they arrive at the address. Mike says "This must be the flat, Mr. Keen. There's his name over the doorbell. The door is open, boss". Keen says "Let's go in and keep your gun handy, Mike". They take a few steps inside. Mike says "The room is empty, Mr. Keen" He says "So, it seems. Just a minute, Mike. Do you smell anything?" Mike says "Sure, I smell powder. A gun was discharged in this room a little while ago". Keen says "There's no doubt that those were pistol shots I heard over the telephone. Mike look at the floor". Mike says "There's blood running along the crack in the wood there". Keen says "It's coming from under that couch. Quickly, Mike. Pull the couch away from the wall". They find the dead body, with two bullets in his head. They find a wallet in his pocket. Keen says "This identifies him as Carl Rollins, the man who phoned our office. He was shot down before he could say why he got in touch with me".

Defense Attorney - Client Grady Daniels
Monday Dec 15, 2025
Monday Dec 15, 2025
Martha Ellis Bryant, a defense attorney, and Jud Barnes, a reporter for the Dispatch, are driving to the jail to meet with a possible client, Grady Daniels, who is charged with murder. Jud says "Marty, I wouldn't touch that case if I were you". Martha asks "Why not, Jud?" He says "Well, for one thing, the police already have the ink on the solved stamp. The victim practically identified the killer before he died". Martha says "Practically isn't enough. What else?" Jud says "The murder weapon belonged to Daniels". Martha asks "Has that been proven?" Jud says "Yes, he admits it". Martha asks "Is there any doubt about it being the murder weapon?" Jud says "None whatsoever. It fits the wounds and it was found nearby covered with blood". Martha asks "What does Daniels say?" Jud says "He was picked up three miles from the scene of the crime and claimed he lost the knife while he was hunting" Martha says "Well, that could happen. Grady Daniels wife, Hester, had just left my office when I telephoned you. She said that Daniels could never kill another man". Jud says "Another? Martha says "Yes. She said he was overseas with the Marines for two years. He said he'd had enough killing to last him a lifetime. I want to talk to him, Jud". He says "All right, Marty, but the Dispatch covered the investigation and the whole story can be told in a half dozen lines. How? Something like this. Vet goes hunting. Farms are all posted no hunting. Vet figures he fought for the country and should be allowed to hunt in it. Argues with farmer. Stabs him". Martha asks "Is that what the police claim?" Jud says "Yes, and they've got the evidence to go with it". Martha says "But it's all circumstantial, and I don't like circumstantial evidence, Jud. Circumstance isn't above dealing a card from the bottom". Jud says "This case could hurt you, Marty". Martha asks "Oh, how can it hurt me?" Jud says "Well, you're going to be on the losing side of an open and shut, smalltime, unimportant case". Martha says "It's a very important case to at least two people, the accused man and his wife".

This Is Your FBI - The Corrupt City
Sunday Dec 14, 2025
Sunday Dec 14, 2025
Detective Donovan stops by the Police Chief's office and asks him "Did you want to see me, Chief? The Chief says "Yes, come in, Donovan. If I were asked what I think of you and your work, I'd say you're one of the most promising young men on the force". Donovan says "Thank you, sir". Chief says "The thing that really sold me on your earnestness about your work, was last fall when you asked for a leave so you could attend the FBI's National Academy, and at your own expense too. And that diploma you came back with, well, I guess I was almost as proud of it as you were". Donovan says "Thanks, Chief". Chief says "You have a great future ahead of you as a law enforcement officer, if you can stand the test of hard knocks. They can come in a million forms. Sometimes, they're hard enough to break a man's spirit completely, if he's not strong enough to take it". Donovan says "Yes, sir". Chief says "I want to personally commend you, Donovan, for the arrest you made two nights ago at Pier 26. Donovan says Thank you, sir". The chief says "I read your report and I think you're on the right track. Somehow that gang of river thieves has got to be broken up". Donovan says "I bungled the job the other night by getting only one, but I'll get the rest of them, sir. Chief says "the man you arrested was released this morning". Donovan asks "What did you say, sir?" The Chief says "Mike Haynes was released this morning". Donovan says "Released?" Chief says "Here is your first test in the school of hard knocks, Donovan. This is a statement from the councilman that is in charge of our appropriation. You may read it all later, but I'll read only the last paragraph. It reads "So therefore, in view of the evidence furnished me by reliable authority, my conclusion is that Detective Donovan acted wholly without cause and recklessly endangered the lives of the crew by the unprovoked and unjustified use of his pistol. Therefore, I demand his transfer to another assignment patrolling a beat and his promotion canceled".

Gang Busters - The Case of the Battle on the Staircase
Saturday Dec 13, 2025
Saturday Dec 13, 2025
Not far from the picturesque town of Oceanside, Oregon, a small park overlooks the blue waters of the Pacific Ocean. This is a peaceful place where someone's thoughts might be pleasant and good, only the thoughts of two young men in bathing suits didn't fit the countryside at all. Burt says "Red, I was just thinking. I guess a day like this makes you think, huh? Lying out here looking up at those clouds...." Red says "Where's Carole, Burt?" He says "Oh, still down there swimming, I guess. She'll be back. Like I was saying, I've been thinking about your idea. Are you sure it will work?" Red says "Oh now look, nobody's sure of anything. All I know is, Burt, I just got a peculiar habit, see. I like dough. I like lots of it. I like throwing money around on women". Burt says "That's sure, who don't?" Red says "Alright now, are you in or out? I'm pulling out of here in the morning". Just then, Carole returns and says "Hey, you guys going to take a dip? That water is sure cold, but a peps you up". Red says "Hey, you look good in a bathing suit, Carole". She says "You see, Burt, other guys know how to say nice things". Burt says "Oh now, I always thought you look good, honey, you know that". Red says "Well, time to head back". Carole says "So soon? I thought we could stay all afternoon. Red says "Oh, I got things to do. Did Burt tell you? I'm pulling out in the morning. Carole says "You are? Gee, we'll miss you Red. Won't we, Burt?" Red says "Huh? Well, will you Burt? Go ahead and answer the girl". Burt says "We'll talk about that later, huh?" Carole says "Talk about what? What goes?" Burt says "Well, Carole, look, uh, me and Red, well that is...." Red says "I'm going to get me some dough, starting tomorrow, a lot of dough and I asked Burt if he wants in". Carole says "Get dough how?" Red says "Oh, I've got a lot of ways. It's going to take time, though, a month, maybe longer. Carole looks at Burt and says "You're leaving? You just get out of San Quentin and you're leaving again?" Burt says "I need money too. Carol how can we have any fun if I'm broke all the time?" Carole says "Just answer my question. Are you leaving?" Burt says "Yeah, I guess I am". After a few seconds of silence, Burt says "Honey, just say something". Carole says "You dirty stinking rat".

Saturday Dec 13, 2025
Saturday Dec 13, 2025
Jeff Regan just walked into Anthony J. Lyon's office. The Lion says "Now sit down, Jeffery. You're just the man I wanted to see. I was just about to phone you. Juliette Jones..." Regan says "Our new client?". Lion says "Yeah, our new client wants you out in Inglewood, right away. Her life's in danger". Regan says "That's all?" Lion says "Yes, she wants protection, a bodyguard Jeffrey. Here's the address". Regan says "Juliette Jones, 712 Garbanzo Avenue, Inglewood". Lion says "Oh, she was beautiful, my boy. She came here to the office an hour and a half ago. Lovely, lovely, and never, Jeffrey, in all my vast experience as the president of the Lyon Detective Bureau, has it been my privilege to see such a gorgeous... and oh, she had a voice my boy. Well, it stroked you when she talked, and she smelled, as a matter of fact, Regan, she smelled of tea". Regan says "Tea?" Lion says "She's a Broken Pekoe Tea tester". Regan says "You don't tell me". Lion says "Yeah, I do. She feels, smells, and tastes Broken Pekoe tea. It's the very best, Jeffrey, the best black tea. Of course, she wouldn't think of testing Green or Oolong Tea, or so she said". Regan says "Sure. Anything else that'll help?" Lion says "Well, there was one thing, now, we mustn't jump to any rash conclusions, Jeffrey, but everything she had on, everything, was brand new and all very expensive, very expensive". Regan says "Maybe some guy likes her". Lion says "Yes, I suppose that would be it". Regan says "Look, Lyon, if you think she's a phony we just don't take her case". Lion says "Now Regan, don't start that". Regan says "What's the matter? She give us dough?" Lion says "Juliette Jones advanced us 400 dollars". Regan says "That's a broth of clams". Lion says "Yes, it is. Look here, my boy, just look - one, two, three, four. Four one hundred dollar bills. Oh, Jeffrey, isn't life wonderful?"

The Epic Casebook - Murder on the Brain
Saturday Dec 13, 2025
Saturday Dec 13, 2025
When news came through that Larry Richie, a well known gangster, was found on Clapham Common with a 38 caliber bullet in his head, Inspector Carr was neither surprised nor, it must be said, perturbed. Speaking to a sergeant from Operations, Carr asks "You say that Richie was found ten minutes ago? The sergeant says "Yes, sir. He was recognized at once by Sergeant Woods of the Clapham Manor, and he thought the squad should be formed" Carr says "Quite right. Looks like gang warfare. Some other thug belonging to some other gang will want his revenge. It looks as though we're going to have a busy time. Where's the body?" The sergeant says "At Clapham Mortuary, sir". Carr asks "Has the murder weapon been found?" The sergeant says "No, sir". Carr says "Alright, I'll send Sergeant Jackson out. Have the local boys found anything? Do you know?" Operations Sergeant says "If they have, they hadn't reported it, Inspector". Carr says "Right. Thank you", and hangs up the phone. Sergeant Jackson approaches Carr and says "Here's the file on the Wilson case, you wanted, sir". Carr says "Thanks, Jackson. You'd better put it in the pending file. Something more urgent has come up. Do you remember Larry Richie, the one that went in for grievous bodily harm?" Jackson says "Do I sir. I gave evidence. Did you see that file from X Branch? They say he's now working with the Lambeth mob". Carr says "Was, past tense. He's dead. Murdered". Jackson says "Well, he certainly had it coming to him, sir, didn't he?" Carr says "Certainly had. I still believe he's the man who bumped off Light-fingered Morris. Richie was shot with a 38 caliber. Jackson says "That'll cause a rumpus, won't it, sir? Carr says "It certainly will. If we don't find the killer and fast, the metropolitan area will become a shooting target for every light fingered trigger happy thug.

Radio City Playhouse - Witness for the Prosecution
Friday Dec 12, 2025
Friday Dec 12, 2025
Miss Emily French was found murdered in her home by her maid, Janet Mackenzie. Her last known visitor was a man named Mr. Leonard Vole. He is subsequently accused of the crime and is in jail awaiting his trial. Mr. Mayherne, the solicitor for Mr. Vole, has just arrived at the jail to provide counsel and to discuss the upcoming trial. Upon entering his cell, Mayherne says "Good afternoon, Mr. Vole". He says "Hello, Mr. Mayherne". As he is leaving, the guard says "You have thirty minutes, sir". Mayherne says "I've come to talk with you". Vole says "Sorry, Mr. Mayherne, I just can't seem to realize that I'm charged with murder. Such a horrible crime too. It looks bad for me, doesn't it?" Mayherne says "It does look kind of black, but Mr. Vole, we're going to make a determined effort to get you off". Vole says "You think I'm guilty don't you. I know you do. But I swear I'm not. I didn't do it, Mr. Mayherne, I didn't do it". Mayherne says "Very well then, I'll accept your assurance, but I must know the worst. I must know just how damaging the case against you is likely to be. Now, Mr. Vole, I need the utmost frankness. You understand that?" Vole says "Yes, I'll be completely honest with you". Mayherne says "Very well. I want you to tell me exactly how you came to make the acquaintance of Miss Emily French". Vole says "It was one day on Main Street, I saw an elderly lady trying to cross the road in heavy traffic. She dropped your packages. I picked them up out of common courtesy and offered to help carry them home". Mayherne says "And she was grateful". Vole says "Yes, of course. She was dressed so poorly, I had no idea she'd turn out to be as wealthy as she was". Mayherne says "But you did find out. Now, the first aim of the prosecution would be to establish that you were low financially at that particular moment. You were, weren't you?" Vole says "Yes, I'd been having a lot of bad luck". Mayherne says "Yes, of course. However, I'm looking at this from the point of view of the prosecution. Now, why did you, a young man of 33, good looking, fond of sport, popular with your friends, devote so much of your time to an elderly woman?"

Miss Effie Perine, Sam's secretary, reluctantly shows the lady visitor into Sam's private office. She says "Thank you for seeing me, Mr. Spade". He says "My pleasure. Won't you sit down?" She says "Oh, thank you. I'm Lorraine Kilcourse, Mr. Spade. It's about my husband, Leonard Kilcourse". Sam says "Your husband?" Lorraine says "Oh, we've only been married a short time. It was a quiet ceremony at the San Ysidro mission. Leonard didn't want to subject me to any publicity, the difference in our ages, you know". Sam asks "You mean you want me to keep it a secret?" Lorraine says "Oh, no. No. Except for the newspapers, of course. Naturally, all of Leonard's friends know". Sam says "Well, he doesn't have many, from what I've heard". Lorraine says "I thought it strange, too, that such a prominent man should have such a small circle of acquaintances. I met him only a short time before I married him. He's been very kind and absolutely devoted to me, and I suppose I should feel ashamed of myself for coming to you. But there are so many things about him that are mysterious". Sam says "I take it that you're not a San Francisco girl?" Lorraine says "No, I met him at a dude ranch". Sam says "Well, maybe I can clear up some of your mysteries for free. The reason your husband doesn't have many friends is because they keep dropping dead". Loraine says "I don't understand you" Sam says "Ah, forget it. He's a big public servant. He's built a lot of sidewalks. The streets of the city are paid with his good intentions. His name is on a thousand manhole covers. The names of his former business associates are only found on headstones". Lorraine says "Well...." Sam says "Well, what?" Lorraine says "I think my husband is paying blackmail to someone". Sam asks "Upon what do you base your suspicions, Mrs. Kilcourse?" Lorraine says "About a month ago, He began withdrawing large sums from our joint account. He's been leaving the house without a word to me, and sometimes doesn't return until dawn".

Archie Goodwin and Mr. Wolf are in his office when the phone rings. Archie answers and says "Mr. Wolfe's office, Archie Goodwin speaking. Oh, hello Doc. How are you? What? You're in trouble?" Mr. Wolfe says "More trouble, you attract trouble Archie, hang up". Archie says "It's our dentist, Dr. Thrummed" Mr. Wolfe says "Let him wait. We never can find him when we need him. Tell him it's after office hours". Archie says "Doc, Doc you're talking so fast, I can't make head nor tails of it. Look, listen Doc, come on over here and we'll be able to hear you. It'll only take you a few minutes, right". As Archie hangs up, Mr. Wolfe says "You consistently disobey me. I want to work on my paper about Odnta cousins". Archie says "Doc Thrummed has a friend who's in some trouble and he needs our advice. Besides, we owe the Doc a fair sized little bill, remember?" Mr. Wolfe says "Money again Archie, money is the curse of our times. Later, that same evening, Mr. Wolfe is studying his paper about orchids, while Archie is playing records on the phonograph. The telephone rings again, Archie picks it up and says "Hello". A female voice on the line asks "Is this Archie Goodwin?" Archie says "Me? Yeah, who is this?" The female voice says "I need help, Archie. Please come at once, you and Nero. Archie again asks "Who is this?" The voice says "This is Gloria.... No, no don't". Archie says "Gloria who?" She says "Rinaldo.... West...." Archie says "Hello? Hello? Well, did you hear that?" Wolfe says "Another female, bah. What happened?" Archie asks "Boss, who do you know named Gloria?" Wolfe says "Gloria? I know nothing about anyone named Gloria". Archie says "She said her name was Gloria... something, I couldn't quite get the last name. But she did say Rinaldo Road. Wolfe says "Well, it's quite possible that she resides on Rinaldo Road". Archie says "She said she was Gloria....Bar or Mar or something like that, and then she said Rinaldo Road West, and then the scream. That's all there was". Wolfe says "The usual pattern of your experience with women". Archie says "It sounded like a hand was slapped over her mouth or she was grabbed by the throat".

Box 13 - House of Darkness
Wednesday Dec 10, 2025
Wednesday Dec 10, 2025
Dan Holiday receives a letter in Box 13 that reads "I have something that may intrigue your sense of adventure. I myself cannot follow it up because I am blind. However, if you will come to the Braille Room at the public library tomorrow at 11 o'clock in the morning, you may be able to find something of interest. I think someone is in desperate danger, and needs help. I'd like to know what you think. Sincerely, William Michaels". In Dan's office, Susie asks "I wonder how Mr. Michaels knew about Box 13, Mr. Holiday? Dan says "I wonder about that too, Susie. He says he's blind." Susie says "Gee, this is really one letter I'd follow up if I were you". Dan asks "What time is it?" Susie says "It's a quarter to eleven". Dan says "Well, it gives me fifteen minutes to get to the public library, and also get a ticket for speeding if I want to get there on time, but maybe it will be worth it". Dan walked into the Braille Room of the library on time, without a ticket. There were only two people in the room, a man and a woman. The woman was busily running her sensitive fingers over a book, but the man was facing the door with a tense, expectant expression on his face. Dan walked over to him and sat down. The man turned his face toward Dan and asks "Box 13?" Dan says "That's right. You're William Michaels?. William says "Yes, that's right. I didn't know whether you'd come or not. As a matter of fact, I half wish you hadn't". Dan says "Your letter mentioned adventure. I never turn that down. What have you got, Mr. Michaels?" He says "This book. It's in braille as you can see". Dan says "What about it?" William says "Let me read you a passage from page 80. "And the terror of the night is hidden in the dark corners of my mind. And the shapes and phantoms that live in fancy are become real". Dan asks "Is that all?" William says "That is all that was originally written on the page, however, at the bottom it also says "Help me. 1217 Granger Avenue". Dan says "That is also on the page?" William says "Yes. Someone who knows how to read and write Braille has used a pin or a needle to put this message on the bottom".

Slate and Saylor are walking on a street in Havana, going toward Sanchez's Printing Shop to pick up some stationary for Saylor. Unfortunately, Saylor's mind is elsewhere. Slate says "Hey watch it, Saylor. That's the second time in three blocks a car's almost run you down. What's the matter with you?" Saylor says "Shannon's Place, the hotel is nifty, and the rooms are 3.50". Slate says "What?" Saylor says "No, I don't like it". Slate asks "You don't like what?" Saylor says "The slogan for my new stationary. The hotel is nifty, the rooms are 3.50". Slate asks "What's the matter with it? It tells the story. It says that Shannon's Place is a classy hotel and the rates are reasonable". Saylor says "Yeah, I know but I...." Slate says "But what?" Saylor says "Now listen to this slogan. Shannon's Place, rest in Havana in your private cabana". Slate says "Who's got cabanas? Makes it a problem, doesn't it? It's too late anyhow. Sanchez has already printed the stationary". Nearing the business, Slate says "Hey, look, Sanchez's shop is dark". Saylor says "Well, he just called you 15 minutes ago, didn't he?" Slate says "Yeah, he said come right over, the stationary was ready. Come on, Saylor". Standing in front of the shop, Slate knocks on the door and yells "Sanchez? It's Slate Shannon. Sanchez?" Getting no response, Saylor says "Try the door, Slate". He turns the doorknob and says "It's open". They walk into the shop and Slate yells for him again. Still, no response. Slate says "Hey, something's wrong, Saylor, strike a match". Saylor says "Something really is wrong. Look at the place". Slate says "Yeah, torn apart like...." Suddenly, they hear noises from the inside of the shop. Saylor says "Slate, there's someone here". As the unknown person tries to run out the door, Slate grabs him and says "I got him, Saylor. She says "I'll hit him with something". After the scuffle, Saylor says "Oh, Slate". He asks "What did you hit me with, Saylor?" She says "I picked something up. It feels like a monkey wrench. I'm sorry, I guess my aim was bad. Hey, what's all this about?" Slate says "Who knows? Maybe somebody else doesn't like our slogan".

Calling All Cars - Banks and Bribes
Tuesday Dec 09, 2025
Tuesday Dec 09, 2025
On April 15th in Los Angeles, at half past two o'clock in the afternoon, a young man working as a teller in the Citizens National Bank, looks up at the clock, then notices the figure of a woman approaching his window. He says "Good afternoon". She says "Good afternoon, I wonder if you would do me a favor and read this telegram". He says "Telegram? Sure I'd be glad to". The teller looks at the letter she gave him, and says "Oh, but this isn't a telegram". She says "Read what it says". The teller starts to read it out loud. He says "Keep still and...." She says "Read it to yourself. I know what it says". After reading it, the teller says "Oh, but there isn't five thousand dollars here". She says "If you know what's good for you, shove those bills into this bag, and keep it quiet". He says "Alright, I will. Here, this is all I've got". He gets all the money out of his cash drawer, and gives it to her. She says "Fine. Now, you read in that note about being covered by three guns. If you make a crack to anyone about this for twenty minutes after I walk out of here, it will be the last thing you will ever do". He says "I understand". Uncertain what to do, the young teller stands in his cage for five long minutes. Then, he takes off to the chief teller's office where he tells his story. The chief teller says "Do you expect me to believe that?" The young teller says "Expect you to believe it? Of course, it's what happened". Chief Teller says "A woman walked in and asked you for all the money. You just handed it over, and then stood there for five minutes before telling anybody?" Young teller says "She told me I'd be killed if I moved for twenty minutes. I didn't want that to happen". Chief teller says "Oh no, of course not. And you didn't want anybody to find out about it until your confederate had plenty time to get away, didn't you?"

The Big Story - The Deadline Murder
Sunday Dec 07, 2025
Sunday Dec 07, 2025
Rolf K. Mills, police reporter for the Minneapolis Morning Tribune, is at the police station for what seems to be a dull Friday night. Suddenly, the desk sergeant gets a phone call from Walt Kramer, the grain inspector. Walt says "I was taking a shortcut back from Cedar Lake across the city dump, when I saw a pair of silk stockings sticking up out of the dump. The thing is, that there were legs in them, a woman's legs". The desk sergeant hangs up the phone and runs into another room. Soon, Detective Peterson comes up to Rolf and asks "Did you say you had a date tonight, Rolf?" He says "Yes, and a deadline". Peterson says "You've got another date now. You and me". Rolf asks "Where?" Peterson says "At the city dump". Rolf says "Very funny. With who?" Peterson says "A corpse, with silk stockings. You coming?" A short while later, the body has been found and examined by a doctor, Rolf says "What a beating she took. Any ideas who she is, Peterson says "No identifying marks. The labels are torn off the clothes". Rolf says "Then, it's safe calling it a murder?" Peterson says "Sure". Rolf says "Say doctor, can you add anything more on the cause of death, beyond the beating, that is?" The doctor says "Yes. This woman has dirt in her mouth and in her throat. That proves that she was alive when she was put here". Rolf says "She was buried alive? Where is the nearest phone? I've got to call the paper!" A few hours later, after the initial story came out, a lady named Mrs. Styles appears at the police station. She said that she saw the story in the paper and thought she knew the woman. Peterson asks Mrs. Styles "Who do you believe the victim is? Mrs. Styles says "Mrs. Sadie Cresley". Peterson asks "What makes you think the murdered woman is your neighbor, ma'am?" She says "I don't know. I just have a feeling. She hasn't been home for days. Neither has her husband. They had a fight. They were always fighting".

Theater Five - Incident at Shadow Valley
Sunday Dec 07, 2025
Sunday Dec 07, 2025
Pop is working behind the counter at his Last Chance Diner near Shadow Valley. He says to Jocko, one of his regular customers "Hope you ain't too fussy, Jocko. Them hash browns got a little burnt tonight. I got a lot on my mind. Ralphie, you know my little grandson, he's been feeling poorly all day. Nelly, my daughter, has been attending to him. Also, the Road Trail people are pulling bus stop from me. They say I got to have two toilets. I ain't finished paying for the first one. Well, here's your coffee. Alright, tomorrow night I'll do better Jocko, give you a real good feed. That'll be 85 cents". Nelly comes in to the diner and says "Good evening, Jocko. Pop, I got to talk to you". Pop asks "Is it Ralphie?: Nelly says "Oh Pop, I don't think he'll make it, not even through the night. If only he wouldn't talk about dying. I can't stand to hear him talking about dying. Maybe the doc can do something". Pop says " I know. Well, go call the doc, Nelly". She says "You don't mind, I mean about the bill". Pop says "When it comes to debt, a couple more pebbles don't make the mountain look any bigger. Take a dime from the cash register". Nelly goes to the payphone and says "Hi Clara, this is Nelly at the Last Chance Diner. Can you get me Doc Landers? No, Ralphie is not good at all tonight. Oh well, I'll call back in a little while". Nelly hangs up and says "Doc Landers ain't in, Pop. Here's the dime, I'm going back to the shack". A police siren is now heard on the highway. Pop asks "What's all that?" Nelly says "It's Doug McLeod. Looks like he's stopping here, Pop. Look I'll be with Ralphie". Doug stops in front of the diner and comes inside. Pop says "Hi Doug". Doug says "Evening, Pop. Pop asks "Why all the siren, Sergeant? Doug says "Accident, twenty miles east. A truck coming this way forced a passenger car off the road". Pop says "Darn shame, anybody hurt?" Doug says "Driver killed, the rest are shook up. It was a big black truck with a sign that said Universal Road Freight". Pop says "Universal Road Freight?" Doug asks "Did it stop here?" Pop says "No sir. Universal Road Freight. I've never heard of it".

Suspense - Where There's a Will
Friday Dec 05, 2025
Friday Dec 05, 2025
A man named Jepson is having a meeting with Charles Ridgeway concerning his gambling debts. Charles says "Now, Mr. Jepson, you really must let me make you a whiskey and soda. I have some excellent scotch". Jepson says "Never mind that Ridgeway, I've come to find out when you can raise the ten thousand pounds you owe me". Charles says "Yes I see. Well Mr. Jepson, ten thousand is a great deal of money". Jepson says "It's what is needed to cover your notes". Charles says "Yes, that's right, but you know, Mr. Jepson, you might just let me write you one more IOU and try again". Jepson says "Your luck's run out, Ridgeway". Charles says "Well, I wasn't much of a gambler anyhow was I? Perhaps it's just as well I've learned my lesson. How long, Mr. Jepson, would you say I have to raise the money?" Jepson says "Four weeks". Charles says "I see, four weeks. And if I should fail to raise the money?" Jepson makes an unspoken gesture toward Ridgeway, regarding the non-payment of the loan. Charles says "I see. well you make yourself very clear, Mr. Jepson, but then perhaps all's not lost. Mrs. Harter, my aunt, has had the foresight to draw up a new will making me her heir. The money was to go to a niece, my cousin Miriam, but now a new will has been drawn up. Aunt Mary finds me much more satisfactory than poor Miriam. The very spirit of solicitude, I am. Forever inquiring about her health, about her poor, weak heart. Four weeks, is that right, Mr. Jepson?" He says "That's right, Ridgeway. Or else". Charles says " I see, four weeks...or else".

I Was a Communist for the FBI - Rich Man, Poor Man
Thursday Dec 04, 2025
Thursday Dec 04, 2025
Matt Cevtic is present at a communist cell meeting that is taking place in the home of cell leader David Bowden. Bowden says "Good news, comrades, delightful news. A plum has been chosen for our exalted cause, a ripe juicy plum. His name? The name of our plum, the irony delights me, simply delights me. His name is Jules Jordan". Someone from the crowd says "The millionaire?". Bowden says "The same. A millionaire with a social conscience. The publisher of that great liberal weekly "Open Thought". Cevtic says "Comrade Bowden". He says "Ah, Comrade Cevtic, you look worried". Cevtic says "Well, this man, this Jules Jordan with his bourgeois conception of liberalism, I don't trust him". Bowden says "Comrade Cevtic, Jordan is obviously a capitalist who fears the inevitable revolution. We've been assigned to put his millions to work for the red master plan. In the past few weeks, I've made it a point to become friendly with Mr. Jordan. Quite friendly, in fact he now comes to me for advice on the editorial policies of his magazine as "one liberal to another", that sort of thing". Cevtic says "You work fast Comrade Bowden". He says "This assignment is my responsibility, Comrade Cevtic. It's success is my success within the party. Failure...." Cevtic says "There can be no failure". Bowden says "Good, good. I need competent, trustworthy assistance. You will help me". Cevtic says "Comrade Bowden, I'm honored". Later that day, Cevtic meets with his FBI contact. He says "I just got a new assignment. Assistant to our cell leader, David Bowden. Our job is to get Jules Jordan into the party". The contact says "That's a new twist, a red millionaire. Why did they pick Jordan?" Cevtic says "His magazine, for one thing. They'd like to print it in red ink". The contact asks "What about Jordan himself?" Cevtic says "He's a perfect patsy. He's young, naive, and worried about doing something good with his inherited money".

Murder Most Foul - Cabin 126
Wednesday Dec 03, 2025
Wednesday Dec 03, 2025
The Durbin Castle Steamship is ninety miles out to sea, off the coast of Africa, on route between Cape Town and South Hampton. Captain Arthur Patey asks his helmsman "What are we making?" Helmsman says "Just under 18 knots, sir". Captain says "Good. What is the temperature?" Helmsman says "81 degrees, sir". Captain says "Not too bad for the tropics". A man walks up to the Captain and says "Murray, sir, night watchman reporting". Captain says "Quiet night here? Murray says "Yes sir, except for one thing. We got a call at 2:58 this morning from one of the first class cabins, number 126, Miss Gibson's cabin". Captain says "Oh yes, pretty girl. What the devil did she want at that time of night?" Murray says "I sent my assistant, Spier, to the cabin. When he opened the door, a man was there". Captain says "Really? Well there is nothing we can do about it, is there? It's not for us to interfere with a passenger's morals". The next morning, the stewardess, Olive, finds cabin 126 unlocked, and Miss Gibson missing. Assuming that she's gone for her bath, Olive tidies up the room, noticing that it seemed a little more disarrayed than usual. Later that morning, Olive noticed that Miss Gibson had still not returned to the room. She asked Bill, the bathroom steward, if he had seen Miss Gibson. He said that he had not. Olive says to Bill "That's funny. She's probably around somewhere, but I'd better report it. It's not like her...." Just then, a voice over the ship's loudspeaker says "Good morning everyone, this is the Captain. One of our passengers, Miss Gay Gibson, appears to be missing. I would be very grateful for any information about her. Anyone who has information or has seen her recently, please come forward".

Romero was already there. Friday says "How about some dinner? Romero says "Well, we got one to check out first. Here's the teletype". Friday reads "Pick up and hold for this department, Alfred Garvey. Wanted for suspicion, forgery, and robbery. This man poses as a fingerprint expert from San Rafael Police Department". Romero says "Here's his mugshot pulled from the record bureau". Friday reads "We're informed that Garvey is registered at the Fair Deal Hotel, Los Angeles. Where's that?" Romero says "Over near First and Broadway". Friday continues to read "Please advise us on his arrest and officers will arrive with warrant. signed' Chief Police Frank Kelly, San Rafael, California". Romero says "Shouldn't take long to pick him up". At that moment, Sergeant John Maxwell walked in to the room. Friday says "Hi, Max. What are you doing around? I thought you took off on vacation". Maxwell says "I just came back to pick up some stuff from my locker. The wife's got the car. You guys going anywhere near North Main and Daly Streets?" Friday says "Yeah, we're going to leave right now". Maxwell says "Oh, okay. Let me grab my coat". They walk to the car, get in, and start down the street. Soon, Friday says "That's the place up ahead, isn't it?" Romero says "Fair Deal, yeah". Friday says "We've got to stop by this hotel a minute, Max. You want to wait here?" Maxwell says "No, I'll come in". After talking to the desk clerk, Friday and Romero learn that Garvey should still be in his room, number 307. Maxwell says he'll stay in the lobby. Friday and Romero make their way up the stairs to the room, but find the door open and the closet cleaned out. Just then, they hear several gunshots. Rushing back to the lobby, the desk clerk says "The guy you were looking for just came down the elevator and shot your friend!"

Randy Stone, reporter for the Chicago Star, is walking in the north side of Chicago looking for a story. At first, he hears a single police siren at some distance away. Then, he hears another, and another. The number of sirens kept increasing to the point that it seem that the entire police force were converging to a single area. Then, one police car separated from the others and came down the street, stopping just a few yards away from him. The officer jumps out of the car and is hurrying to a call box. Randy asks "Hey Officer. what's up? It sounds like every police car in the city is out here." The officer says "I got no time, Mister, read about it in the newspaper tomorrow". Randy says "My name is Stone, Randy Stone of the Chicago Star". The officer asks "Are you a reporter?" Randy says "Yes, mildly, that's the calling". The officer Look, I've got no time to stand here gabbing, so I'll give it to you straight, Gig Sanvers busted loose". Randy says "Sanvers? Great, when and how? The officer says "Read it in your newspaper, Stone. Okay, across the next move, they've got him trapped". The officer gets back in his car to leave. Randy says to himself "Gig Sanvers, a two-time loser, a killer, loose in a city of four million people and every one his enemy". Randy hurried to a phone, checks with the police, and then drives over to the part of Chicago called the Badlands, that strange part of every city, surrounded by the business section, rundown, deteriorated, and filled with tenements and abandoned factories. It was there that the police had thrown a cordon around a boarded-up building. Randy's press pass let him go through and up to the front line. He asks Police Captain Ireland on the scene "Is Sanvers in that building?" The captain says "We got a tip he would be. Sanvers knows this neighborhood like the back of his hand". Randy asks "How did he get away?" The captain says "We haven't got the full report yet, but on his way to the death house, he killed a cop, and made his escape".

Dangerous Assignment - Intercept Dr. Korvell
Tuesday Dec 02, 2025
Tuesday Dec 02, 2025
Steve Mitchell is going into the Commissioner's office as Ruth says "Well, here he is Commissioner". Steve says "Thanks, Ruth. Well, what's the deal Commissioner?" He says "Take a look at this map of Eastern Europe, Steve. This country right here". Steve asks "What about it?" Commissioner says "Politically, it's being torn apart. There are two major parties at odds with each other and a well-organized minority who'd like to keep them at odds". Steve says "Pretty familiar pattern". Commissioner says "Yes, it is, but right now it's vital to Western Europe and to us that this particular country be united into a democratic form of government and there's only one man who can unite that country". Steve says "Don't tell me it's me". Commissioner says "No, it's Dr. Korvell". Steve says "But he's no politician". Commissioner says "That's the point, Steve. Dr. Korvell has no political affiliations. He's that country's leading citizen, a scholar, a scientist, and a man of stature". Steve says "Yeah, he could be just the man for the job". Commissioner says "As you know, he's been living in this country since the war, but now he feels it's time to return to his own country. There's to be a vital meeting of the legislature over there in three days. A meeting that could determine which way the country goes. If Korvell could appear at that meeting, it might turn the trick". Steve asks "So, what do you want me to do?" Commissioner says "Escort the good doctor over there. He's already left, the day before yesterday". Steve says "Well, then I don't get it. Why call me on the deal? What more is to be done?" Commissioner says "I'm coming to that, Steve. Dr Korvell realized that the organized minority would try, at all costs, to prevent him from reaching his destination, so he's traveling incognito. Once he arrived, his plan was to go directly to the house of a friend in the capital of his country. This morning, we found out that this so-called friend is actually a member of the minority. Steve, you've got to intercept Korvell before he reaches that man's house".

Murray says "Well, you should be more careful, Sue. Well, where do you think you're going?" Sue says "On a little trip". Murray says "Looks more like a big trip. You've cleaned out the closet". Sue says "If I want to go away...." Murray says "From me? You wouldn't do that Baby Doll". Sue says "I saw the paper. That man has three broken ribs". Murray says "What man?" Tales of the Texas Rangers - Dead or Alive
Monday Dec 01, 2025
Monday Dec 01, 2025
At exactly 9:13 AM on Wednesday, April 16th, the French Freighter Grande Champe carrying a highly explosive cargo of ammonium nitrate fertilizer blew up in the harbor of Texas City, Texas. It was the first in a chain of explosions as chemical plants, tin smelters, and oil refineries disappeared in blasts and flames. Shortly after 1:00 AM the next morning, the major chain reaction was set off. The explosions rocking the city of Galveston, ten miles across the bay, where excited crowds gathered in the streets watching the raging flame filled sky. A guy selling newspapers says "Extra! extra! Texas City death toll at three hundred. Hundreds more missing. Scores of bodies unidentified". A man named Vance Young and his wife, Lilian, walk up to him. The newspaper guy asks "Paper, mister?" Vance says "Yeah, give me one here". Lilian asks "Where are the names, Vance? Where's the list of the dead?" Vance says "They only got a few of them identified". Lilian asks "Well, is Ralph's name there?" As he looks over the names, Vance says "No, he's all right. A working square like him would be". Lilian says "But he worked at one of the refineries, and they're burning". Vance says "Stop blubbering. You want to attract attention to me?" Lilian says "No, but he is my brother. I got to worry about him too, don't I?" Vance says "Yeah. Come on over here into this doorway. Look at that blaze over there across the bay. What a spot to clean up! Money and jewelry must be laying around the streets just waiting...." Lilian says "Ain't you crazy, there'll be police there, and rangers. You're in enough trouble now". Vance says "If your brother is among the dead, there is nothing you can do for him, but, you can help me".

Stand By for Crime - Subversive Activities
Monday Dec 01, 2025
Monday Dec 01, 2025
Chuck Morgan, radio newscaster in Los Angeles, is looking at a copy of the L.A. Times, when he sees a picture of a man he was familiar with from New York. Chuck remembered seeing him in a New York courtroom. His name at the time had been Ivan Rolinsky, and he was a communist. Chuck remembered hearing a judge sentence Rolinsky to five years imprisonment for subversive activities. Now, the man's name is Jim Loring, and he is running for mayor of Carmichael, a city located up the coast about a hundred miles from Los Angeles. Loring is not only running for mayor, it looks as though he is going to be elected. Chuck tells the owner of the radio station, Pappy Mansfield, about Jim Loring's past. Chuck's secretary, Carole Curtis was listening in. Pappy says "Well, it'd make good story, all right, Chuck, but you're wasting your time. Jim Loring's past is as clean as a whistle". Chuck asks "Oh, and how do you know that, Pappy?" He says "Well, The Loring's are a well-known family in Carmichael. Jim went to war in 1942, and while he was overseas, his folks were killed in an auto accident. When Jim came home in 1945, he was taken in by an aunt and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. Asa Loring". Carole says "So you see, Chuckie Boy, Jim Loring, who's running for mayor, couldn't be Ivan Rowinsky, the Communist". Chuck says "Hmm, that figures. By the way, Pappy, isn't there a war plant in Carmichael?" Pappy says "Well, there's a factory up there producing military goods. Why?" Chuck says "If the mayor of Carmichael happened to be a Communist, he'd be in a fine position to get his hands on the output of that plant, wouldn't he?" Pappy says "Your imagination's getting the better of you again. I've already explained to you that Jim Loring...." Chuck says "I heard you. It makes sense. Isn't it somewhere near Carmichael that the government is doing further research on atomic submarines?" Carole says "Chuck, for heaven's sakes, why don't you give up on this one? There's no evidence that what you're thinking is true". Chuck says "You're right. You and Pappy have sold me. I am going to start my two week vacation tomorrow, and go to Carmichael on my own time".

Broadway is My Beat - The Harry Foster Murder Case
Sunday Nov 30, 2025
Sunday Nov 30, 2025
Detective Danny Clover is called to a particular park bench in Central Park, New York. A crowd of onlookers is forming. Sergeant Muggerman is already on the scene. Muggerman says "Over here, Danny. Right there near the bench". A young boy says "I found the knife. I didn't pick it up". Danny says to Muggerman "Who is the boy?" The boy says "I'm Paul Gilbert. I haven't been home from school yet". Danny says "Well, you'll go home in a squad car, Paul". Muggerman says "I promised him with the siren, Danny". Danny says "With the siren. What happened, Paul? How did the knife get there?" Paul says "I saw the man take it out of his own back and throw it down. Then, he staggered away". Muggerman says "Did I show you this, Danny? All this blood. Wherever he is, he's hurt real bad". Danny turns back to Paul and says "I want you to think for a minute, Paul. What did this man look like?" Paul says "Tall, I guess. Yeah, I guess that's all. He was tall". Danny says "Most grown-ups are tall, aren't they, Paul?" Paul says "All of them, except for midgets". Danny says "One more thing, Paul. Was there anyone with this man? Think hard." Paul says "No, I don't think so". Muggerman says "Well, you told me that there was a...." Paul says "The other man I saw wasn't with him. The other man in the hat just watched him. Then the man in the hat ran away. He wasn't with him". Danny asks "What did the man in the hat look like?" Paul says "He had a hat. That's all I know. I got scared. I ran". Muggerman says "That's right, Danny. Paul ran right into Officer Curcio on the beat. Almost knocked him down. Curcio came back, saw the blood on the bench, the knife, and phoned it in". Danny says "Paul, did you know the man, the man with the knife?" Paul says "No, uh-uh. I usually don't come home from school this way. We had an after-school game over there on the playground". Danny says "Get the squad car, Muggerman, for Paul, with the siren".

Nick Carter, Master Detective - Mind Over Murder
Saturday Nov 29, 2025
Saturday Nov 29, 2025
In Nick Carter's office, Nick and Patsy are interviewing a stranger, a young man who has just called to consult Nick. Nick asks "How did you happen to come here?" The young man says "Well, I asked a policeman where I could find a good detective and he gave me your name". Patsy says "Suppose you tell us what's bothering you". The young man says "Well, three mornings ago, I woke up in a strange bed in a strange apartment. I had no idea where I was, until a young lady told me that it was her apartment". Nick says "Judging by the bandage around your head, you must have had an accident. Was that before, or after you woke up in this strange bed?" The young man says "It must have been before. I don't remember anything about it. The girl from the apartment said me she found me on the steps of her apartment house last Friday night, or rather Saturday morning as she returned from a party. Seeing that I was injured, she managed to get me up to her place and called her doctor. Well, the doctor said my injury wasn't serious, but I had to be quiet for a few days. So, she let me stay there for the night. The next morning, even though I was able to answer her questions, I knew nothing about myself. I had to tell her something, so I invented a name, told her some story about being from out of town, and having a bad fall". Nick asks "What name did you give her?" The young man says "John Powell". Patsy asks "Does that name mean anything to you?" The young man says "No, I just picked it out of the air". Patsy asks "What makes you think you may be a criminal?" The young man says "This" and empties his pockets. Patsy says "Good grief, Nick. Look at all that money". The young man says "Yes, there's over ten thousand dollars there, plus some very expensive jewelry".

Mr. and Mrs. North - Runaway from Murder
Saturday Nov 29, 2025
Saturday Nov 29, 2025
Russell Gordon, president of the Gordon Electrical Appliance Company, is having business and financial difficulties. The main issue is in regards to a business loan he received from the Seaboard National Bank in the amount of 100 thousand dollars. Knowing that he cannot repay the loan by the due date, He called Mr. Greg Schaefer at the bank and asked for a three month extension on the repayment. Russell is siting in his office this morning awaiting the bank's decision. Miss Nichols, Mr. Gordan's secretary, calls him on the intercom and says "Mr. Schaefer of the Seaboard National Bank calling, Mr. Gordon" He says "Oh, yes. Put him on. And would you come in, Miss Nichols?" She says "Yes, sir". Gordon says "Hello, Greg. What's the news? Oh, only 30 days. But, I asked for a three-month extension. I know, but..., Yes, yes, I understand, Greg. I see. Well, thanks for calling". Miss Nichols says "There's something wrong, Mr. Gordon". He says "The bank is giving me only 30 days more on my loan instead of 90. You don't have $100,000 you could lend me, do you, Miss Nichols?" She says "I wish I did, Mr. Gordon. You could have it". He says "Thank you, Marjorie". She asks "What are you going to do?" He says "Oh, I'll raise it somehow". Later that evening, Gordon is discussing the business problems with his wife, Freida. He says "I can sell my collection of rare books for 25 thousand". Freida asks "Then where's the rest of the 100,000 coming from?" Gordon says "From the liquidation of the heavy appliance division, sale of the machinery, inventory. I've already made a deal with American Electric". Freida says "This is almost like starting all over, isn't it?" Gordon says "We can pull through this, if we want to. But, to be honest, I really don't want to".

Philo Vance - The Ivory Murder Case
Saturday Nov 29, 2025
Saturday Nov 29, 2025
Joe Hillary and Tom Duncan are on an ivory hunting expedition in Africa. At the end of a very successful day, they find themselves quite a distance from their base camp. Joe says "Tom. we might as well rest here for a little bit. No sense in trying to make it all the way back to camp tonight". Tom says "Yeah, whatever you say Joe. Funny thing about fate isn't it?" Joe asks "How do you mean?" Tom says "We woke up this morning a couple of guys without any money. We go to sleep tonight millionaires. That ivory we found, there's at least 2 million in it". Joe says "We had to get paid for coming all the way to Africa, didn't we?" Tom says "Not that well. If those natives would just stop with those tom-toms, and their chanting. I wonder what they mean?" Joe says "I hope that they are saying everything is okay". Suddenly, their native African guide, Tonga, appears. Joe asks "Yes, what is it, Tonga?" He says "Natives tell me to ask you a question". Joe says "Go ahead". Tonga says "Natives ask to leave ivory here. It belong here". Joe says "Oh, they do?. You go back and tell them that the ivory belongs to whoever finds it, and we found it. And tell them to cut out those tom-toms". Tonga says "Please, Mr Hillary, Tom-toms mean what they tell me to ask you, to leave ivory here". Joe says "Tell them to cut it out". Tonga says "Tonga tell them, only Tonga not sure other natives listen to him". Tonga leaves, and Tom says "Well, that's that. Now, let's talk about you and me". Joe asks "What about us?" Tom says "Just in case there's any doubt in your mind, Joe, let's understand this. I don't trust you too much". Joe says "That's nice to know". Tom says "We've got the ivory. We'll bring it back and you'll sell it. What do you intend to do about paying me off?" Joe says "Oh, I've thought about that, Tom". He says "That's nice. You know what I'm entitled to, don't you?" Joe says "I certainly do, and I've just decided what you're going to get".

Peter Troy was visited by Miss Suzanne Perot, a French lady that was hosting a fashion show. Miss Perot says "So, you are the adorable Peter Troy, no?" Troy says "No, I mean sure I'm Peter Troy ma'am. Oh and this is my secretary, Julie Summers. Miss Perot says "Ah, you have a headache, Miss Summers?" Julie says "A headache, no. Why?" Miss Perot says "You are frowning so, I thought it must be a headache. You will shake my hand Peter Troy, that is the English way. You do not like kissing the ladies hands in this country". Troy says "Oh, I don't know, I think it's rather a nice idea really. So yeah, sure after all you have to start somewhere". Julie says "Mr. Troy, do you have a headache?" Troy says "Hey, what's that Julie? No, I don't have a headache". Julie says "I think you will before very long". Troy says "Well, Miss Perot, won't you sit down?" She says "Yes, I will. Now, I will give you the business". Troy says "Oh yeah uh...what?" Julie says "If there's one thing I admire, it's frankness". Miss Perot asks "What is going on?" Julie says "Mr. Troy already has a business, Miss Perot, but the number of people who still try to give him another one, you'd be surprised". Miss Perot says "I do not understand. I wish to talk about my girls". Troy says "Your girls? Well, you go right ahead Miss Perot, I'm all ears". Julie says "You can't help the way you look Mr. Troy". He says "Julie... Please continue Miss Perot". She says "It is my fashion show. For this I come all the way from Paris. Ten beautiful girls I have engaged. The day after tomorrow, we have a big showing of the girls from the Paris House of LaPorte, and these girls will wear beautiful jewelry, very valuable. I fear someone may try to steal some of it". Troy says "Oh well, that figures. But you've asked for police protection, of course?" Miss Perot says "No, I could not bear it. Big clumsy policemen standing about in my beautiful salon. It would be like goats in a glass factory". Troy says "Goats in a glass factory?" Julie says "She means, like bulls in a china shop".

Counterspy - The Case of the Infiltrating Agent
Wednesday Nov 26, 2025
Wednesday Nov 26, 2025
David Harding, in the Counterspy Headquarters in Washington, receives an urgent message from the Buenos Aries Embassy that an enemy agent, named Ivor Sanderson, has just booked a flight to northern Mexico. Later, Harding receives a message from the Counterspy field office in Nuevo Laredo that a man answering Ivor Sanderson's description just got off a plane here this morning. Harding sends a message to all southern field offices to be on alert for the next 24 hours. He will personally fly to Laredo, Texas, and will provide specific assignments upon arrival. Meanwhile, an intoxicated tourist from Dallas named Harry is sitting in a bar in Nuevo Laredo, talking to a local girl, he believes, is named Pepita. She says "Harry, you drink too much. We go home". Harry says "Oh, no. No, Pepita. I'm having too much fun. I like Mexico. I don't want to go back to Dallas". Pepita says "You don't go back to Dallas until tomorrow. I mean my home". Harry says "Oh. Why didn't you say so?" Pepita says "Come, you lean on me. I will open the door". They get outside, and Harry says "There's my car". Pepita says "Oh, we don't have to drive to my house". Harry says "Oh, we don't?" Pepita says "No, I live right next door to the saloon". They get into her house, and Harry passes out in an easy chair. Pepita gets his car keys, and gives them to Carl, her partner. She says "It's the big Oldsmobile, right out front, Texas license plate JW360. Carl calls for Mr. Sanderson, and says "We must drive to the car to the garage to put the merchandise inside the tires. The man will wake up in four or five hours. Sanderson says "We are not putting the usual merchandise in the tires this time. We are smuggling something else across the border".

Whitehall 1212 - The Case of Margery Tate
Tuesday Nov 25, 2025
Tuesday Nov 25, 2025
Superintendent Thomas Meredith was unable to accompany Inspector Cecile Daly of the CID when he went down to the Pembridge Court Hotel, Notting Hill, that Friday morning to investigate the reported death of a guest. When Meredith finally arrived there, two and a half hours later, he was glad he hadn't got there before. Inspector Daly told him all about it, though. He says "The guest was found lying face down on the bed, with one arm under her body. Meredith asks "Shot or what?" Daly says "She died of suffocation. The doctor says her face was buried in the pillow. Matter of fact, a good bit of the pillow had been stuffed into her mouth like a gag". Meredith says "You'd think she'd have got herself up". Daly says "She was tied to the bed. Her ankles were tied together with a bath towel. Her head was fastened to the frame of the bed with the belt of her coat". Meredith says "There are blood stains here on the bed. Did you see them?" Daly says "She had been beaten". Meredith asks "With what?" Daly says "From the marks on her back. I imagine it was a riding crop of some sort. They took her over to the Hammersmith Mortuary. You can go and have a look at the marks if you like". Meredith asks "Know who she was?" Daly says "There was a identity card and a ration book in her purse. Her name was Margery Tate". Meredith says "It's murder, of course". Daly says "Well, I don't think it was measles, sir". Meredith asks "You haven't any idea who did it?" Daly says "I think a bloke named Neville George Clovelly King. That's the name this room was booked under. He's had this room booked since yesterday morning. He had a key to the hotel front door". Meredith says "The way they run these places". Daly says "That's spot careless, isn't it? All the staff goes to bed at midnight, leaving the place locked up". Meredith says "So, nobody saw them come in then". Daly says "Not a bloody soul".

Cloak and Dagger - The Trap
Tuesday Nov 25, 2025
Tuesday Nov 25, 2025
Not all of the twelve thousand people working with the Office of Strategic Services parachuted into enemy territory. Some of them stayed in Washington, creating secret codes. Others, like Sergeant Irwin Hazen, sat behind a desk in France and drew maps. Before the war, Irwin Hazen was, of all things, an illustrator of comic books. However, his talent for drawing made him a valued member of the OSS. He is now reporting to the Colonel of his unit regarding his latest assignment. He says "Sergeant Irwin Hazen reporting, sir. Here are those overlay maps you requested, Colonel". The Colonel says "Good, good. Fast work, Sergeant". Irwin says "Thank you, sir". The Colonel says "I'll look them over now. In the meantime, I want you to do something for me. I've just had word that one of our agents, Lieutenant Miller, who was sent ahead for advanced reconnaissance, has returned". Irwin says "Lieutenant Miller? Yes, sir, I know him". Colonel says "He's in that tavern about a mile from the headquarters, getting very drunk. He should have reported immediately. I want you to go down and bring him back to headquarters". Irwin says "Yes, Colonel. Right away, sir". Colonel says "Oh, Hazen, I saw that cartoon you submitted to Yank". Irwin says "Oh?" Colonel says "Very good, very good. Not very flattering of me, though". Irwin says "Uh, no, sir. I'll get Lieutenant Miller for you, Colonel, sir". Irwin quickly made his way to the tavern. Lieutenant Miller was slumped over the bar, swaying back and forth, and he looked very drunk. Irwin asks "Hey, Lieutenant, what's with you? Colonel wants you to report to headquarters right away". Miller says "Oh, is that you, Irwin?" Irwin says "Couldn't this wait till later?" Miller says "No. Couldn't wait. Couldn't make it otherwise. Irwin asks "What are you talking about?" Miller says "Tell the Colonel that Briere is heavily fortified. I saw it myself. There are 80 pieces of 105 millimeter artillery behind the lines. The Germans are digging in. Heavily fortified...." Miller then, falls to the floor. Irwin says "Miller!" The waiter asks "He pass out?" Irwin says "He is dead".

Boston Blackie - The Bus to Valley Junction
Monday Nov 24, 2025
Monday Nov 24, 2025
In the small town of Valley Junction, Silas Gardener's General Store is open for business. Harry Wells, the local bus driver, walks in and says "Howdy, Si". Silas says "Morning Harry. How's that bus of yours? Still all in one piece?" Harry says "Well, far as you can tell, in one look, it's all in one piece. But I wouldn't want to have to pay a dollar for every nut and bolt that fell off between Valley Junction to the main highway". Silas says "Well, you ought to get the company to buy you a new bus, Harry. Drivers in the city get new buses". Harry says "Folks on my route wouldn't know me if I was to turn up with a new bus. How's business?" Silas says "Oh, good. Always good this time of year. Have a store full of people nearly every day from sun up to sunset. Sort of glad it's a little slow now". Harry says "Yeah. You was out taking a little ride near my place yesterday, wasn't you, Si?" Silas says "Come to think of it, I was". Harry says "Yeah. You don't recollect who you saw out in the orchard with me, do you?" Silas say "No, I don't think I do". Harry says "Well, now that's being mighty smart of you, Si". Silas says "Huh? I don't exactly get what you mean?" Harry says "I mean exactly what I said. You're being mighty smart not recollecting who you saw out at my place yesterday". Silas says "Well, you don't remember seeing anyone". Harry says "Yeah. Well, now that's just the thing to remember, if anybody asked you". Because if you remember you did see somebody, and if you know who he was, why there's no telling what will happen to you. You know what I mean? So long, Si". After Harry leaves the store, Si is thinking about what was just said. He picks up the telephone, and says "Operator, this is Si Gardener at the General Store in Valley Junction. Get me the city, will you? I want to talk to a fellow named Boston Blackie".

The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes - The Speckled Band
Monday Nov 24, 2025
Monday Nov 24, 2025
Sherlock Holmes is awakening Dr Watson. Holmes says "Watson, Watson old man". Watson says "Good Heavens, Holmes. It is a quarter past seven. What on earth is going on?" Holmes says "A client, Watson. A client in a considerable state of excitement". Watson asks "But, who? Why is there worry?" Holmes says "The who, is a young lady. As to the why, when people wander about the metropolis at this hour, they have something pressing to communicate. And should it prove an interesting case, my dear fellow, I would not miss it for anything". Watson asks "Then, you've seen her?" Holmes says "Huh, even said good morning to her. Mrs. Hudson even gave us some coffee in the sitting room. She is about thirty years of age, dressed all in black. Pitifully agitated, with restless frightened eyes like some hunted animal". Watson says "Poor soul. It's not just coffee she needs then, but kindness". Holmes introduces Watson and himself to the young lady. Holmes says "You must be cold, traveling at this hour. Come into the main room and draw up to the fire". She says "It is not the cold that makes me shiver, Mr. Holmes" He says "Indeed, what then?" She says "It is fear, Mr. Holmes. It is terror". Holmes says "We mustn't fear Miss...." She says "Stoner. Helen Stoner". Holmes says "I have no doubt that we will soon set matters right. You've come in by train this morning, I see, although, of course, you had a journey before that. I observed the second half of your return ticket in the palm of your left glove, while there are several splatters of mud on your left jacket sleeve, that speaks of time spent along heavy roads sitting next to the driver of a dog cart" Miss Stoner says "I see Mrs. Farintosh was right regarding your abilities". Holmes says "Miss Stoner, please sit down. So, you have come far?" She says "“I started from home before six, reached Leatherhead at twenty past, and came in by the first train to Waterloo. Sir, I can stand this strain no longer; I shall go mad if it continues. I have no one to turn to, save one, who cares for me, and he, poor fellow, can be of little aid".

Rabat says "It is a highly personal matter". Anna says "If you wish an interview with his Excellency, you may submit your request through the usual diplomatic channels". Rabat says "Now listen to me please, the Ambassador is leaving his post here in Thailand to attend the International Conference in London, is he not?" Anna says "Why do you ask?" Rabat says "And from there he expects to travel to his own country, before returning here to Bangkok, is that so?" Anna says "I don't know who you are or what you want, but if you don't leave his Excellency's office at once I will summon the authorities". Rabat says "If I don't talk to the Ambassador, my dear girl, his Excellency will never live to see his native land again". Anna says "Are you insane?" Rabat says "I tell you, I have..." At that moment, the Ambassador walks into the room. Rabat says "Your Excellency, do you speak English, sir? My French is very bad". The Ambassador says "Yes, I speak English". Rabat says "I must see you in private, sir". Anna says "Your Excellency, this man forced his way into the office and demanded an interview. He must be drunk or crazy". Ambassador says "Now, now, calm yourself Anna. What is it you wish, young man?" He says "My name is Rabat, and I have a minor position at the Polish legation here, Your Excellency. Sir, you must be on your guard. I have authentic information that an assassin has been chosen to follow you to London and to make certain you never reach the International Conference alive".

A man saw you do the job". Haddock says "What job? I don't know what you're talking about". Guthrie says "A witness identified you in the line". Grebb says "We've already got his statement. He identified you as the killer". Guthrie says "He'll go on the stand and he'll point you out. First degree. You know what the sentence is". Haddock says "I hate to disappoint you...." Guthrie says "The witness was in the park. He saw you tailing Krug...." Haddock says "I told you, I wasn't tailing nobody". Grebb says "You were picked up on the other side of the park". Haddock says "So what, I was walking". Guthrie says "You really think you're going to beat this?" Haddock says "Look, if I didn't kill anybody, why shouldn't I beat this? Guthrie says "Who paid you to kill Krug?" Haddock says "How many times do I gotta tell you?" Guthrie says "We know who you work for, Haddock". Grebb says "You work for Jack Stefano". Haddock says "I work for nobody". Guthrie says "Stefano's got orders out. Every guy who might give him trouble is supposed to be taken care of". Haddock says "Look fellows, will you forget it, huh? You're not gonna get anywhere with me". Guthrie opens the door and says "Sergeant Quine, take him back down to his cell". Grebb says to Haddock "We got you and we're going to get Stefano, with or without you".

A few days before Christmas, Philip Marlowe, feeling tired of the low pay of his profession, decided to write a story about murder, based upon his personal experiences as a Private Detective. Once the story was complete, he sent it to Kingsby Publications. A few days later, he received a response from a guy named "A. Fromsett" at the company, who wanted Marlowe to visit them to discuss his story. Arriving at the publishers, a young lady says "Oh, come in Mr. Marlowe. You're here about the story you wrote". Marlowe says "Yeah, I got a letter from a guy named A. Fromsett". She says "I'm Fromsett, Adrienne Fromsett to be precise. Tell me something, Mr. Marlowe, have you done much writing?" He says "No". Adrienne says "You do very well for a beginner". Marlowe says "Well, it's based on an authentic case. Do you run this publishing business all by yourself Miss Fromsett?" She says "Oh no, Mr Kingsby runs it. Tell me, are there really detectives like the one in your story who never lie, cheat, or double cross a client?" Marlowe says "Yeah, there're a couple of dopes like that". She says "Good, then you were writing about yourself". Marlowe says "Look, you don't really want to buy my story do you?" Adrienne says "I was about to offer you 200 dollars". Marlowe says "Oh no you weren't. The real reason I'm here is because you want a smooth operator who keeps his mouth shut. When you read my story, you said that's my boy, he's dumb, he's brave, and he's cheap, am I right?" She says "Partly". Marlowe says "Then why all this micky mouse about my story?" Adrienne says "I want you to find Mr. Kingby's wife, without his knowing you're looking for her. She's a vicious woman, a liar...." Marlowe says "I don't want to be nosy, Miss Fromsett, but what makes that any of your business?" She says "I handle all of Mr. Kingsby's affairs. He wants to divorce her and I don't like your manners". Marlowe says "I'm not selling my manners, and I'm not selling my story either. I don't like getting mixed up with a tricky female who wants to dispose of the boss's wife just so she can marry him herself".

George answers the ringing telephone in his office. The voice on the line says "You want a story?" George says "Hold it, will you? Who is this?" The voice says "My name is Jerry Huell. I'm a writer and I have a story". George says "Yeah, well, this is George Valentine and I'm not a publisher". Jerry says "Please listen to me. You've got to meet me right away. Captain Charlie's Neptune Palace, the old waterfront district". George says "The captain's who's what?" Jerry says "I live here. It's an old hotel. I'm collecting material. But this particular story, I'm afraid I don't know how it ends. That's why I need you". George says "Sounds to me like it goes around in a circle". Jerry says "I want to be there when it ends. Don't you understand? That's why I'm calling you instead of the police". George says "The Police? What kind of a story is it?" Jerry says "Well, it concerns a mysterious stranger and a seaman who chews tobacco. And mostly, of course, the parrot". George says "The what?" Jerry says "The parrot, a green and orange parrot". George says "A green and orange parrot?. Now look, friend, if you...." Jerry says "Meet me in fifteen minutes at the foot of Tide Street, please. You don't want anyone else to get their hands on this story, do you?" About fifteen minutes later, George and Brooksie meet Mr. Huell. Brooksie asks "Is it always so foggy down here?" Jerry says "Only in the summer". George says "Here's Captain Charlie's Neptune Palace. It's quite an ornate old place, isn't it?" Jerry says "Oh, the rooms are empty now, or most of them, and half of it is locked off, of course. It tips like a one-legged man, there where the piling underneath is sinking. George and Brooksie soon meet the strange inhabitants of the Neptune Palace and learn about what happens to those that become involved with the parrot.
