Monday Oct 13, 2025
Johnny Dollar is called to Los Angeles to see Mr. Ellis Rasmussen, father of the late Fred Rasmussen. He is met at the airport by the family's chauffeur and drove to the lush, green Holmby Hills section on the west side of the city. The chauffeur stops the car in front of the Rasmussen estate, a large two-story colonial home. As he steps out of the car, Johnny is met by a man with greying hair wearing a swallowtail coat. The man says "Hello, I am Hardy, sir". Johnny says "Hello, Hardy". Hardy says "Mr. Rasmussen is waiting for you. This way, please". They stop in front of a huge panel door. Hardy taps on it once, then pulls on the knob. As they enter, a tall man with a shock of pure white hair, rises from his chair and turns toward them. Hardy says "This is Mr. Dollar, Mr. Rasmussen". Rasmussen says "I want about four fingers of Sour Mash. What do you want?" Johnny says "You took the words right out of my mouth, Mr. Rasmussen". Hardy says "Very good, sir". Johnny says "He's a pretty nice fellow". Rasmussen says "We're all pretty nice fellows around here Mr. Dollar, sit down". Johnny says "Thanks". Rasmussen asks "What are you doing in Los Angeles?" Johnny says "Federal Underwriters of Hartford wrote a blanket policy for all Imperial Rubber Company employees. Your son was an executive with Imperial when he was killed in Malaya last spring. Federal owes his widow 25,000 dollars". Rasmussen says "I don't know where she is, Mr. Dollar". Johnny says "I see". Rasmussen says "I doubt if you do. Let me put it this way. I never met the young lady. Fred married her one night in Elko, Nevada. Two days later, they were on their way to Malaya. They were there for six months when the development station was raided by guerillas one night. Suddenly, I no longer have a son".
