Friday Oct 24, 2025
Friday Oct 24, 2025
George Dillon, a disbarred lawyer, is meeting with Carl Shelby and his girlfriend, Myra. Shelby asks "Would you care for a drink, Dillon?" He says "Don't mind if I do, Mr. Shelby". Shelby says "Myra would you mind...." She asks "Anything for you, Carl?" He says "No, thank you my dear". Dillon says "It's a nice view of the ocean you have, Mr Shelby. There's nothing like a California beach house, I always say". Shelby says "Right now, Dillon, I'm only interested in what you have to say about the business at hand". Dillon says "Yes, I found your man". Shelby asks "You're sure that he can handle this sort of thing?" Dillon says "With the greatest of ease and experience". Myra says "Here's your drink, Dillon". He says "Thank you". Shelby asks "Who is this man?" Dillon says "His name is Roxy Madera. Sound familiar to you Mr. Shelby?" Shelby asks "Oh, he's the one who was released recently from the federal penitentiary?" Dillon says "He's the one. I was Roxy's attorney before the state relieved me of my practice". Myra says "Tell me, Dillon. Is this man, this Roxy Madera, willing to take risks?" Dillon says "Risks that could cost lives. Including his own. Listen, a life to Roxy Madera is no more than grain of sand. Well, Mr. Shelby, what do you say?" Shelby says "I say Roxie Madera is our man, get him". Later, at Roxy and his girlfriend Billie's apartment, Dillon pays a visit to discuss business. Roxy says "You sure took your time getting here". Dillon says "Sorry Roxy, I got held up in traffic". Roxy says "Alright Dillon, let's not waste time. Sit down. And Billie, go into the other room and powder your nose or something". After she leaves, Roxy says "Okay Dillon, what have you got?" Dillon says "Well, I spoke to that certain party...." Roxy says "Just the facts". Dillon says "Alright, the shipments consist of antibiotics, like penicillin. They are being shipped regularly by truck to certain warehouses in this area. From there the drugs are distributed. Some of them shipping overseas to military stations". Roxy says "So, you want some of the loads hijacked?" Dillon says "As many as possible".

Cloak and Dagger - The Frank Baker Story
Friday Oct 24, 2025
Friday Oct 24, 2025
Frank Baker, volunteer for the Office of Strategic Services, is receiving his last minute instructions from an OSS Colonel. He says "Remember, from now on you'll be Friedrich Schmidt, German soldier. You have your military pass, forged signatures, hospital certificates, ration coupons, and permit to travel. You know what to do". Frank says "Yes, Colonel. Carl and I parachute behind the enemy lines in Austria. We radio back information on the strength and location of German troops around Innsbruck". Colonel says "You realize there'll be no help from headquarters, no contact waiting for you below?" Frank says "Well, sir, Carl knows the country and his sister is still living there". Colonel says "I needn't tell you the risk you're taking. Of course, you'll land in American uniforms, so in case you're picked up immediately, you'll be treated as prisoners of war. However, later, if you're caught out of uniform in enemy country...." Frank says "I think I know what to expect, sir". Colonel says "Alright then, just one more thing. The information we're after is vital. The third army is closing in fast and we must know what's ahead for them. I'll expect your first message in ten days". Frank says "You'll have it, sir". Later that night, Frank and Carl are on the plane, above Austria. Carl says "Cigarette, Frank?" He says "Thanks, Carl. Can I ask you something?" Carl says "Yes, what is it?" Frank says "About Liesel, your sister". Carl says "Oh, what about her?" Frank says "You haven't seen her for over five years". Carl says "It's been over six years". Frank says "Well, uh, six years is a long time..." Over the speaker, they hear the pilot say "Running In". Frank says "That's us. Get ready to jump". Carl says "What did you want to ask about Liesel?" Frank says "Oh, nothing. Forget it". The pilot says "Ready, number one. Ready. Jump". Carl jumps and says "I'll see you downstairs". The pilot says "Ready, number two. Good luck, Frank. Go". Frank heard the snap of the parachute as it opened. He looked down, and saw a patch of snow in the valley, spreading wider in the moonlight. He then thought of Carl's sister, and the question he didn't have the courage to ask him.

Whitehall 1212 - The Case of William George Greenley
Friday Oct 24, 2025
Friday Oct 24, 2025
The Chief Constable of Essex telephoned the Criminal Investigation Division from Romford at 9:05 on the morning of Tuesday, September the 27th, asking that officers be sent to Stapleford Abbotts, a village halfway between Romford and Ongar on the London Chelmsford Road. Chief Inspector Quinton Tabset of Scotland Yard, accompanied by Detective Sergeant Philip Wise, was assigned to the case. Tabset and Wise went at once to Stapleford Abbotts. They were shown the body of Police Constable William George Greenley, who had been stationed there. He had been found alongside the road a few miles from the village. At 6:30 that morning, the 27th, the constable explained to Wise and Tabset what had happened. He says "We know it happened sometime after 1:30 AM, Chief Inspector, because I met him at a conference point at that time near Grove House on the road to Ongar, about 600 yards from where the body was found, sir". Tabset says "Go on". Constable says "He had been shot four times, sir. Twice through the head and these other two. They shot the poor chap in each eye". Tabset says "Horrible". Constable says "I hope they drown in their own blood, sir". Tabset says "At least, they'll hang". The Constable says "Bill Greenley and I were kids together, sir". Tabset says "They'll hang". Constable says "He had his pencil in his hand, sir. His notebook was lying on the road near him. He evidently stopped a car and was talking to them". Tabset asks "Are there marks are on the road?" Constable says "I'll show you where, sir. It isn't far. I'd rather like to get out of here". Tabset and Wise followed the Constable along the road to a spot where it had been cut through to a small hill. The banks on either side at the edge of the road shoulders were about 6 feet high. Constable says "That's the place, sir. Here's where they found him, sir. Where the grass is pressed down". Tabset says "There is little blood here". Constable says "Not as much as one would expect, sir. Over there, on the other side. You see there's quite a blood stain on the grass".

The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes - The Man with the Twisted Lip
Thursday Oct 23, 2025
Thursday Oct 23, 2025
At the end of a long and tiring day at his practice, Dr. Watson was contemplating the joys of a good night's sleep, while Mary, his wife, was engaged with her needlework. Suddenly, Kate Whitney, a personal friend of the Watsons, stops by for a visit. Kate says "Please excuse my calling so late, but I need a little help. I didn't know what to do. It's about Isa, my husband. He has not been home for two days. I am so frightened for him". Dr. Watson asks "Mrs. Whitney, has your husband returned to his old habit? Has he taken to opium again?" She answers "Yes". Watson says "I feared he would". Kate says "But he tried, Doctor, and I know he tried to keep it from me. Up until now, his usage would be confined to one day. He would come back twitching and shattered in the evening. But now, he's been away for forty eight hours. What am I to do?" Watson asks her "Which den does he make use of?" She says "It's a place near the docks, on Upper Swandam Lane, called Bar of Gold". Watson says "I will go there alone to search for him. If he is at this address, I will send him home in a cab within two hours". Mary says "Please be careful, John". Watson says "Of course, my dear. I shall be as quick as I can". In an alley near Swandam Lane, was a steep flight of steps leading down to what appeared to be the mouth of a black cave, Watson found the den of which he was in search. He opened the door and made his way into the dark room, which was thick and heavy with opium smoke. The room was filled with heavy wooden berths, like that of an immigrant ship. At the end, there was a small brazier burning charcoal, and a tall, thin old man sitting on a stool staring into the fire. Soon, Watson finds Isa Whitney, and tells him "Your wife has been looking for you for two days. You should be ashamed of yourself". Isa says "I am. Find out what I owe, Watson. I can do nothing for myself". Looking for the manager to settle Isa's debts, Watson walked by the tall, thin old man looking into the fire and felt a sudden tug at his coattails.

Thursday Oct 23, 2025
Thursday Oct 23, 2025
Insurance Investigator John Rodney, has been hunting for a fugitive named Jim Gary for about five years. He is known to be involved in murder and jewelry theft. Rodney calls his employer, Mr. Adams of the National Insurance Company, regularly, reporting on his status in the ongoing search. Rodney is making a call. Adams picks up the phone and says "Adams speaking". Rodney says "Mr. Adams, this is John Rodney". Adams says "Oh, hello Rodney. Where are you calling from?" Rodney says "Terre Haute this time, but I got here too late. Jim Gary worked here all right, but that was three years ago". Adams says "Oh, too bad. Any idea where he went?" Rodney says "It seems he went from here to Birmingham. He must have still had the jewels with him. They never turned up here. I'll phone you again". A few days later, Rodney says "Hello, Mr. Adams, this is Rodney from Birmingham". Adams asks "Any luck?" Rodney says "Well, he's not in Birmingham, but he was six months ago. It seems he was mixed up on a shooting here similar to the killing in Omaha six years ago". Adams asks "Well, where to now, or are you giving up?" Rodney says "I'm never gonna give up, Mr. Adams. I'll find him". Adams asks "How will you know when you do? You don't have a positive identification". Rodney says "Well, I may get it. I just found out that he has a grandmother in Greensboro. If she's still alive, maybe she can tell me something about him. I'll phone you again from there". A few days later, Rodney calls and says "Hello, Mr. Adams, this is Rodney in Greensboro". Adams says "Oh, hello Rodney. Did you find Jim Gary's grandmother?" Rodney says "Yeah, I found her all right but she couldn't tell me much about him. She's old, very feeble, and practically can't see". Adams says "I hope you didn't tell her that her grandson is a wanted fugitive". Rodney says "No, I couldn't. I said I was an old school friend of his. And, we got a break Mr. Adams. She gave me a picture of him". Adams says "A picture! That's the one thing we needed all these years. Good work Rodney". He says "Thanks, but that isn't all. She says the last time she heard about him, he was in New York. And she thinks he is still there".

Wednesday Oct 22, 2025
Hilda Bradley and her husband, Neil Bradley, have been having difficulties in their marriage. Their relationship is now unstable, and has gotten to the point of Neil packing and leaving the home. In her anger, Hilda writes a scathing letter to her father, Judge James T. Tomlins, in Washington, DC. After completing it, she says to herself "That, my fine prancing husband, will fix you". Hilda then calls for her butler, Brooks. He says "Yes, Mrs. Bradley". She says "I want you to mail this. It is airmail, special delivery, and if you hurry you can catch the one o'clock pick up from the mailbox at the corner. It's to Judge Tomlins in Washington, and it's very important. It concerns Mr. Bradley. So, run along. Brooks says "Yes, Mrs. Bradley, I'll hurry. Oh, would you like some ice cream for lunch?" She says "No, I don't care, just hurry with that letter". After Brooks leaves, Hilda calls the post office to determine when the letter will arrive to it's destination. The operator says "I can't guarantee it, but it should arrive there by nine o'clock this evening". Hilda says "Thank you", and hangs up the phone. A few seconds later, the telephone rings. She says "Hello?". Neil says "Hilda, is it still convenient for me to drop in tonight?" Hilda says "I was expecting you. Brooks says the rest of your things are packed. They'll be ready". Neil says "I'd like to see you". After their long talk on the phone, Hilda suddenly has a change of heart. After talking with Neil, she says to herself "Why is it that one moment I love him so much, and the next moment I want to kill him?". She, then remembers the letter. She calls out "Oh Brooks, never mind that letter, Oh, Brooks..." A short while later, Brooks and Hilda Bradley are sitting in her car next to the corner mailbox, hoping to intercept the letter before the postman collects it. She says "This is alright, Brooks, there will be no trouble tomorrow. What time is it?" Brooks says "It's 25 minutes past one o'clock". Hilda says "On the mailbox, it says the pickup time is one o'clock. Could we have possibly missed the mailman?" Brooks says "We were here at 12:45".

Lieutenant Ben Guthrie escorts the witnesses to the viewing area. He says "You can sit right there, just any one of those empty seats. Sergeant Quine, which line are the Yudo Boys in?" Quine says "First line, I think. Let's see, yeah Tommy Young, number one, Ernest Conway, number two, and George Holstamp, number three, Yes, all in the first line". Sergeant Matt Grebbs explains the line-up procedure to the potential witnesses. The police know that each of the three work for Lester Yudo, however the witnesses are all afraid to identify any of them. Lester Yudo has been running the numbers racket, and using these three to intimidate the merchants in Ypsilanti, Michigan. However, this time was different. Mr. Goldberg, cigar store owner at the corner of Lucas and Jefferson, said no to them, and was beaten to death as a result. Feeling discouraged, Lieutenant Ben Guthrie and Sergeant Matt Grebbs decided to pay a visit to Lester Yudo at his place of business, a bar. As they walked in, Lester says "Well, glad to see you boys. Sit down, sit down. Let me get you a drink". Guthrie says "No thanks, Yudo". He says "Alright, what can I do for you?" Guthrie says "We've got three of your boys down in the tank". Lester says "Three of my boys?" Grebbs says "Yeah, Young, Conway, and Holstamp". Guthrie says "We got them booked on a murder rap". Lester says "Well look, Lieutenant, what's this got to do with me?" Guthrie says "One of those boys beat up a man named Goldberg. Beat him up bad. Goldberg died". Lester says "And one of those boys did it?" Guthrie says "That's right". Lester asks "Who says so?" Guthrie says "I do". Lester says "Huh, that isn't much good, now is it Lieutenant? Guthrie says "One of your boys went a little too far this time Yudo. We're going to get him, and we're going to get you".

At the Central Homicide Bureau of the Police Headquarters in a large city, Assistant District Attorney Wallace is speaking with Mr. Wickham. Wallace says "Sit down, Mr. Wickham. My name is David Wallace, Assistant D.A." Wickham says "Well, I would have been here sooner, but they asked me to identify the body. Mrs. Kenet was my secretary". Wallace asks "You're manager of the Bridle Press, is that correct?" Wickham says "Yes, a publishing house, religious and educational textbooks. Mr. Wallace, what happened?" Wallace says "Well, she was strangled sometime late this afternoon". Wickham says "Well, if I can be of any help, any information...." Wallace asks "Have you any?" Wickham says "Perhaps it has no bearing, but Mrs. Kenet's husband returned home today after an absence of two years". Wallace asks "Do you know him?" Wickham says "No, I never met him. I was out of my office most of the day. When I returned, they told me he'd been there, Mr. Kenet, looking for his wife". Wallace asks "Well, wasn't she there?" Wickham says "No, she wasn't. I'd sent Mrs. Kenet to my home to pick up some manuscripts". Wallace asks "Did Mrs. Kenet return to the office?" Wickham says "No, but under the circumstances, we assumed she went straight home with her husband. Perhaps, if you can find Mr. Kenet...." Wallace says "Oh, we found him all right. They've got him in the next room. Let's see what he's told them...." Wallace and Wickham go to the next room, where the Inspector is questioning Mr. Kenet. Inspector says "Alright, Kenet, we go over it once again The two of you are in your wife's car and you deliberately drove it off the bridge. Isn't that right? Oh, come in Wallace". Wallace says "Inspector, this is Mr. Wickham". Inspector says "We'll be through in a minute. Well, Kenet?" He says, "But I told you what happened". Inspector says "After you strangled her, you wanted it to look like an accident, a broken neck in an auto crash, but you knew you could walk away from that kind of an accident, didn't you?" Kenet says "I told you that I killed her in the park, and then I tried to kill myself". Wallace says "That's good enough for me, Inspector. It isn't often they come this easy".

Let George Do It - There Ain't No Justice
Monday Oct 20, 2025
Monday Oct 20, 2025
Miss Brooks, answering the phone for George Valentine, receives a call from a confused little man named Abner. Brooksie says "Hello?" Abner says "I would, but I can't, you see. It's a great ad. I've seen it lots of times. Oh, a great ad, I said to myself. There's a kind of a guy that when a guy's in a pinch can...." Brooksie says "Well, just a minute. Mr. Valentine...." George says "I'll get on the extension, Angel". Abner says "Hello? Hello? I haven't got much time". George says "Yeah, I'm right here. I got it. No time to write, but who are you? What's your problem?" Abner says "Now, this is a real pleasure, sir. If you'll permit me, my name is Abner and I'm in jail". George asks "Your what?" Abner says "Only don't get me wrong. The reason I can't write is because I can't write. You understand?" George says "Wait a minute. You said you were...." Abner says "That's right. I'm in jail. And let me tell you a more unjust thing has never happened to me. There ain't no justice...." Brooksie says " Mr. Abner, slow down a little. I'm trying to write". Abner says "It's important, that's all. There wouldn't be time to write either, I guess, for that matter. But the main thing is it's important. That's what I've got to make you understand, see? You get me?" George says "Oh, sure. You make it so easy". Abner says "Yeah, well, I'm kind of excited. You see, the jail burned down". George says "Oh, yeah. And you burned down with it." Abner says "Now, hold on. I mean the jail over in Melody. That's where I'm calling from". Brooksie says "Melody? Over in the valley?" Abner says "Yes, sir. That's the one. And a beautiful little town it is for tarantulas. But that old jail, let me tell you, was the biggest eye sore...." George says "Hold it, hold it, will you? Now, say something sensible or hang up". Abner says "But I am. I mean, just because I can't write. Now, listen, the fire was last night. They moved us out, that's all. Now we're locked up in the sheriff's office. That's how I could get to the phone". George says "Ah, clear as a bell". Abner says "Listen to me. I got out of the fire, understand? Only one of the guys in the big cell, he didn't. He's dead. And if I tell what I know about it, I'll be dead too".

The driver asks him "Mister, you sure this is the place you want?" Merritt says "It's 1504 Avenue L isn't it?" Driver says "Oh it's the house number you gave me. I only meant, uh, well a gent like you in this kind of neighborhood? Well, I'm sorry I said ...." Merritt says "That's all right. Not all a man's clients can afford Park Avenue". Merritt pays the driver, and says "Well, here you are. Keep the change". Driver says "Oh, thank you mister, thanks a lot". Merritt makes his way to the front door and rings the doorbell. Edna says "Yeah, who is it?" He says "Mr. Merritt, Walter Merritt. I spoke with you on the phone". Edna opens the door and says "I wasn't sure it was you". Merritt says "Who did you expect?" Edna says "A bill collector, process server, a lawyer...." Merritt says "I'm a lawyer". She says "Come in, this way. Alright, grab yourself a chair. You drink rye?" He says "Not this time of morning, you go ahead". She says "I can use one. Last night was a bit rugged, and then hearing from you how Alex kicked off and all. Poor Alex, that was a shock to me all right". Merritt says "Yes, it must have been". Edna asks "Heart disease you said?" Merritt says "That's right, inoperative". She says "Poor Alex. But I don't guess you came over here to exchange condolences". Merritt says "No". She asks "For what, then?" He says "According to my information, you were still married to the late Mr. Alexander in 1937. He didn't obtain a divorce until some four years later. You weren't represented in that action were you?" She says "No, some character sent me a letter saying we were split. I didn't receive it for about six months". Merritt says "You knew he remarried since that time?" She says "I heard somewhere. Yeah, I also heard he made himself a bundle of money". Merritt says "It's quite a bundle". She says "Well, he can't take it with him". Merritt says "No, he can't. That's why I'm here".

Escape - Violent Night
Sunday Oct 19, 2025
Sunday Oct 19, 2025
Barry O'Grady, plantation owner in the Caribbean Islands, is suddenly awakened from his sleep by an unfamiliar noise outside his bungalow. He quickly becomes wide awake. It's a trick he learned around the back countries of the Caribbean, out of necessity. He didn't move, or make a sound. He just stared into the darkness and listened. Again, he hears a noise. He says to himself "Someone is on the veranda". He slowly slid off his cot, reached for his pistol on the table, and stood up. He moves quietly across the room and stops next to the shutters. A feminine voice says "Senor O'Grady". He asks "Who is it?" She says "Pepita. It is Pepita". Barry says "Pepita?" She says "I am come to warn you of a terrible danger". Barry asks "Are you alone?" She says "Si". Barry says "Alright, wait a second". Barry opens the shutters and asks "What's wrong? What's the matter?" Pepita says "Look, toward the village. Towards Monte Miguel". Barry says "What? Fire. What's burning?" Pepita says "The estacion of the police, the Federalista Army barracks, and other places. It is a revolution, Senor". Barry asks "Revolution? Who is it? Who's behind it?" Pepita says "Alacran. He has come out of the jungle again. One thousand men are following him. And now more from the village. He has guns, trucks, cars, and radios. He has called himself Governor of the district". Barry says "Governor? He won't last 48 hours". Pepita says "Everyone say it is revolution all over the country. You must leave your plantation and go quickly". Barry asks "Pepita, you think he still remembers?" She says "Alacran will never forget. Not ever. Not before one of you is dead". Barry says "Yeah, maybe you're right. Thanks, Pepita. Thanks for everything".

Casey, Crime Photographer - The Camera Bug
Saturday Oct 18, 2025
Saturday Oct 18, 2025
Mid-afternoon, in the photographic department of the Morning Express, Casey sits at his battered desk, wearing the scowl of a man who began his day with a dull razor and cold coffee. The door opens and a young man enters. He asks "Excuse me, is Mr. Casey in?" Casey says "Yeah, that's me". The young man says "My name's Forester, Alan Forester. I've heard a lot about you". Casey says "Yeah, I know. I'm on all the sucker lists. What are you selling?" Forester says "Oh, nothing. That is, well, you see, I'm a photographer". Casey laughs, and says "Sometimes I think every guy in the world is a camera bug. Are you looking for a job?" Forester says "Yeah". Casey says "See the city editor. His name's Burke. Four floors above". Forester says "Well, I've already seen Mr. Burke and he says there aren't any vacancies here. I've been to all the other papers too. I thought you might advise me how to get a start". Casey asks "How old are you?" Forester says "Twenty-one". Casey asks "You got a job now?" Forester says "I work in a camera supply store. I know a lot about taking pictures, honest I do. And well, my wife and I decided that it's time for me to break into the line I've always wanted". Casey says "You've got a wife and a job with regular hours?" Forester says "Yeah". Casey says "Oh, boy. My advice is to forget it. You're out at all hours. You can risk your hide to get a good shot and the city desk may stick it on page ten. This is a dog's life, kid. Keep out of it". Forester says "Yeah, but you get around and you see things". Casey says "Well, okay, camera bug. Here's the only way I know how to break in. You put in about twelve hours a day on the streets with your eyes open and your camera ready. Occasionally, you'll get a news picture you can sell. If you're lucky, you may get a shot that you can trade to the city editor for a steady job. That's all I can tell you". Forester says "Oh, thanks a million, Mr. Casey. I'll do exactly as you say".

In the study of an old mansion in midtown New York, a man about 50 years old sits at an old-fashioned oak desk. He is Hiram Stevens, a wealthy inventor, and he is speaking into the telephone. He says "Hello there, Fitch. The connection was broken. I'll go back to where I was. No, I didn't misunderstand you, I know exactly what I want to do. I know what you mean. Just follow out my orders, that's all you have to do. Alright then come right out here. Alright, Fitch, I'll be waiting for you. Hiram hangs up the phone and says "Yes, that'll fix him. Suddenly, Hiram hears a strange sound, and says "What's that? Hey, stop it, stop it, oh..." Three gunshots are heard. As he lay dying, Hiram says "You murdered me". A few seconds later, Dick Stevens, Hiram's nephew, is knocking on the door to the study. He says "Uncle Hiram, Uncle Hiram, is anything wrong? I can't open the door!" Dick's wife, Tina asks "What's the matter, Dick?" He says "I heard shots coming from Uncle Hiram's study! Now, I can't get in and he doesn't answer". Tina says "Well, let's go inside". Dick says "How? He's evidently locked the door. Tina says "Oh, here's a chair. Get up on it and look through the transom!" Dick says "Oh, I'd forgotten the transom". He climbs up and says "Tina! Uncle Hiram is slumped over his desk. He's committed suicide! Tina says "Suicide? Let me get up there too, Dick". He says "No, it's horrible. His head is almost blown off". Tina says "Come down from that chair and try to break the door in. We must get in there. If you can't do it, I'll run out and call the gardener". Dick says "No, don't call anybody. I'll ring the police".

The Adventures of Philip Marlowe - The Promise to Pay
Friday Oct 17, 2025
Friday Oct 17, 2025
Philip was making chicken cacciatore. Everything was ready for the pan, when, about 7:15 PM, his telephone rang. It was Garfield Randall, a former client who, at the age of 32, was currently setting the Los Angeles business world on its ear. Garfield says "Say, Marlowe, did you see the article about me in this morning's paper?" Marlowe says "Young man will probably be next head of Continental Land and Trust?" Garfield says "Yes, that's it". Marlowe says "Chairman of the Board, isn't it, Gar?" He said 'Yes, the job I've been after for two years". Marlowe says "So?" Garfield says "Well, it's a job that'll go to somebody else at noon tomorrow, Phil. Unless you can get me out of a nasty mess I'm in". Marlowe asks "What's her name?" Garfield says "Terri D... How did you know it was a woman, Phil?" Marlowe says "It's a trade secret. What do you want me to do?" Garfield says "Well, come over here to my place, 91 Laurel Canyon, immediately. I'll explain then. You can make it, can't you, Phil? I mean, now, right away?" Marlowe says "Yeah, I guess so. Right away, Gar". After Marlowe arrives, Garfield says "Oh, come in, Marlowe, quickly. I'm due there at 8 o'clock, and it's almost that now". Marlowe says "A small point, Gar, but just where is there?" Garfield says "Terri Dodger's cottage over in the valley, 3847 Sunset Drive. I'm expected because the lady wants 20,000 dollars to keep her mouth shut". Marlowe asks "About what?" Garfield says "The fact that a few days ago, an innocent evening with some new friends ended up with me gambling and losing 1,000 dollars at Paul Naylor's Club on Lancashire Boulevard, also in the valley, at 3100 North. I didn't have the cash on me, so he took my IOU" Marlowe asks "Your marker would interest who in particular?" Garfield says "Only the entire board of directors of Continental Land and Trust. They feel their executives should be above that sort of thing, even once in a while". Marlowe says "And this Terri Dodge, can she prove that you lost 1,000 dollars gambling?" Garfield says "Well, according to this message here, yes. It came a few minutes before I called you, together with my picture, which she returned, frame and all".

The Whistler - Death Comes at Midnight
Friday Oct 17, 2025
Friday Oct 17, 2025
John Prentice, a wealthy manufacturer, and his wife Clara, are asleep at midnight, when John suddenly yells "No, no, no. I don't want to die. Get away. Get away". His wife Clara says "John, John. Wake up", John awakens and asks "Where is he?" Clara says "Where's who?" John says "That man". Clara says "Oh, you've been having a nightmare, John". He says "Huh? Oh, good heavens, Clara. It was awful. I dreamed there was a man in this room and he stood right over me. He said I was going to die. I was going to be murdered within 48 hours". Later, that evening, the Prentices, along with their grown daughter Eva, and her fiancé Dwight Cooper, are planning to attend a lecture. Clara and Eva are in the living room awaiting Dwight's arrival. The doorbell rings, and Eva says "There's Dwight now, Mother. I'll go to the door". Clara says "Wait a minute, Eva. You'd better make sure who it is before you open the door". Eva says "Mother, are you still worrying about that dream Daddy had last night?" She says "Well, I can't help being nervous about it". Eva says "Of course it's Dwight. We're expecting him, aren't we?" Eva opens the door and Dwight steps in and says "Hello, darling. How come you're answering the door yourself? Maid's night out?" Eva says "We haven't got a maid. She went to work in a war plant". Dwight says "Well, good for her. Good evening, Mrs. Prentice". Clara says "Good evening, Dwight". Eva says "You see, Mother, it wasn't a big bad wolf after all". Clara says "Not this time. But we'd better be careful, Eva". Dwight asks "What's this about a big bad wolf?" Eva says "It seems that Mother believes in dreams, and last night Dad had one that was really a honey. Daddy! Dwight's here, so hurry up". John says "I'll be there in just a minute". Suddenly, the telephone rings. Eva says "I'll get it. Hello?" The voice on the line says "Is Mr. Prentice there?" Eva says "He's busy right now. Could I take a message?" The voice says "Yeah, tell him he better come to the phone, whether he's busy or not, if he wants to save his life". Eva says "What?" The voice says "This is a matter of life and death".

Johnny Brogman is walking up and down the sidewalk, keeping a close eye on the bank across the street. A lady steps in front of him and says "Got a match, kid?" Johnny says "Huh? Oh, I don't know. Here, now beat it". She says "Thanks. Keep your motor running, that's it. You nervous?" Johnny says "What are you talking about? Who are you? Scram sister". She says "The first bank's always the hardest, kid. I've been watching you case that one across the street. Good luck, baby face". Johnny walks across the street and goes inside. He walks up to a teller and says "Get him up. Hand over that money, this is stick up!" The teller says "Alright, alright, don't you..." Johnny says "Quick, or I'll blow your brains out". As Johnny grabs the money, the teller trips the alarm. Johnny fires a couple of shots, and runs out the door. That lady is behind the wheel of his car. She says "Get in the car, kid, quick". He says "Hey, what the....?" She says "Get in, and take it easy with that rod. I'm driving, see, kid, wherever you want to go, I'm driving". A minute or two later, she says "Well, we're losing them at 80 MPH. You picked a good car for a hot one". Johnny says "Go down Highway 43". She says "Don't be dumb, we'll go my way. I know these Colorado roads like a book. What's wrong, they get you?" Johnny says "No, keep going, I'm all right. I imagine things". She asks "Including that blood on your leg?" Johnny says "I'm all right, just keep going". She says "Okay, we've lost them. How much money?" Johnny says "Seven hundred". She says "Chicken feed, punk stuff". Johnny says "Punk stuff, huh? Who the devil are you running me around? This was my job". She says "I'm cutting myself in". Johnny says "Oh, yeah?" She says "Put away the gun. You're no killer, it's not in your face. Your eyes are too wide open". Johnny asks "Who are you, what's your angle, what do you want?" She says "The name's Julie. I'm driving you to a saw bones first, to take care of your leg. Then, I've got other plans". Johnny asks "What other plans?" Julie says "Build you up, make you a big shot. You see, fella, I've been outside a little while, but I'm coming back in now, with you".

The Man Called X - Rendezvous with Death
Thursday Oct 16, 2025
Thursday Oct 16, 2025
The Chief says to Ken "A few minutes before midnight, in a small telegraph cable office in Rangoon, Burma, Lal Raul gave a hand written cable to the clerk and then walked out into the blackness of the night. A few seconds later, someone then shot and killed that clerk in the office. Lal Raul is now missing, along with the original cable he had written to you. That's the story, Ken. Luckily, the Rangoon police were able to make out the message from the impression left by Lal's pencil on the pad of message blanks. Here's a copy of it". Ken says "Thanks, Chief". Ken reads the message "The shadow from the north spreads swiftly over this land. For the welfare of all our peoples, I pray that you will come at once to Rangoon. Signed, Lal Raul". Ken asks "Oh, Chief. You remember Lal Raul?" Chief says "Sure. He worked with the bureau when the Japs were in Burma. He practically ran the underground resistance there, single-handed". Ken says "Yep. Nothing meant as much to him as his country's freedom". Chief says "Yes, I know, Ken. But what about this cable?" Ken says "The United States has slapped an embargo on strategic war materials from Asia, such as rubber, tin, and antimony. So, what's been happening? We get reports of ten cords of crude rubber turning up in Budapest. A thousand tons of tin are dumped at a Baltic port. Borneo oil turns up in Sophia". Chief says "I know, Ken. I know. It's obvious we've been giving priorities to somebody who's been selling us out, rerouting strategic war materials and shipping them behind the Iron Curtain". Ken asks "Well, what have we been doing about it?" Chief says "You know, the bureau's got men in every ECA country in Europe working on it". Ken says "Sure, but we don't have any in Burma. Look at the map and see what lies north of Burma. Lal Raul tries to warn me about the shadow coming from the north. Then, he disappears".

Richard Diamond, Private Detective - Fifty Thousand Dollar Diamond Heist
Wednesday Oct 15, 2025
Wednesday Oct 15, 2025
After learning from Helen about the police commissioner's house being robbed of fifty thousand dollars worth of diamonds and his gardener being murdered, a man walks into Richard's office and says "Is this the Diamond Detective Agency?" Richard says "Yes, just like it says on the door, come in and close it gently. Sit down, Mr..." The man says "Burton, Phineas Burton". Richard asks "What can I do for you, Mr. Burton?" He says "Well, I want to hire you if it's agreeable". Richard says "For a hundred dollars a day in expenses, I'm pretty agreeable". Burton says "Well, that's fine. I have a package I want you to deliver to a party in Philadelphia. Now, here's three hundred dollars. There will be two hundred more for you after you make safe delivery of the package". Richard asks "Why do you want to pay me for five days when the trip to Philly and back can be done in a few hours?" Burton says "Well, Mr. Diamond, I simply want you to drop everything else and take this job immediately. That is my reason for the added payment". Richard says "Oh, all right. I'll take your money. Just as soon as you tell me what's in the package, who it goes to and why it's so important that I take it personally". Burton says "Why, I can't tell you that". Richard says "Okay, it's your problem". Burton asks "Do you have to know?" Richard says "Of course". Burton says "Oh, very well. A Mr. Elliott will meet you at the Philadelphia Station information desk at two o'clock today. I will wire him your description and he will make the contact. As for the package, it contains some very valuable papers which Mr. Elliott is afraid his wife will try to intercept". Richard says "I see". Burton says "He commissioned me to find the best man I could to bring the package to him. You'll have to leave immediately. Mr. Elliott is very anxious to get the package. You call me at the Aster when you return and I'll send over the rest of the money. Good day". Richard says "It may be at that."

Barrie Craig, Confidential Investigator - Scream for Murder
Wednesday Oct 15, 2025
Wednesday Oct 15, 2025
Barrie Craig first met the ex-boxer called "Killer" Best in the upscale Cabana Adora restaurant. Barrie was there to celebrate the birthday of Lieutenant Trev Rogers from the Homicide Division. Trev says "Hey, this food is alright". Barrie says "Tell me that again when you see the check". Trev says "Well, how many birthdays does a man have?" Barrie says "One a year, the rumor is". Trev says "This place is crawling with celebrities". Barrie says "Yeah, I see there's Marshmallow Midas over there, the hot lips trumpet player. Trav says "I thought he was dead". Barrie says "His agent dug him up. A forty week contract came along. Over there, getting nicely potted, is Killer Best". Trev says "Welterweight contender". Barrie says "Light Heavyweight ex-contender. He had his nose rebuilt and hung up his gloves". Trev says "He married into society. An educated guy for a fighter". Barrie says "He read a couple of books". Trev laughs. Barrie then says" Uh oh, Trev". He asks "What?" Barrie says "Look at the Killer change colors, from rosy red to green". Trev says "He's gagging, gasping for breath". Killer falls to the floor. Barrie says "He's not gasping anymore, Trev, he's conked out". Later, they saw Killer Best at the Southmore Hospital. He was no longer green in the face. He was blue. Barrie and Trev were at his bedside. Trev says "You were poisoned, Killer". He said "Poisoned?" Trev says "That's a proven fact. I had the sedimentation in your glass sent to chemical analysis. Somebody loaded your drink". Killer asks "If it was poison, why am I alive now talking to you?" Trev says "An excellent question and I've asked it too. There are a couple of likely theories on that. One, you have a certain immunity to a poison of this type, or two, you hadn't taken enough of it to be fatal".

Rocky Stark and his wife Kim are discussing their dire financial situation at breakfast. Kim says "You're in one of your down modes again. Some things aren't all that bad with us". Rocky says "Sure, living in one room in a condemned tenement, me with a crummy night watchman job that pays peanuts, no future, and no sign even of a future, and you can say things aren't all that bad?" Kim says "We've got each other. In fact, you in prison two years and all. Well, to me it's everything Rocky". He says "Oh Kim, baby, don't get me wrong. Those two years behind bars, I'm thinking of you, and how much Manny Revell owes me. So, I get out and go to see him at the Golden Calf, and what did he say? I'm afraid you are out. Then he really lays it on me. He's got a new partner, that two bit punk, Johnny Mallory". Kim says "Rocky sweetheart, forget it. What's the sense of going over it again and again". Rocky says "I can't forget it, I thought we were running a legit night spot, and behind my back, he's got a loan shark operation going. He comes to me and says, I'm a three-time loser. You take the bath for me and I'll make it up to you. Sure, I took the bath alright and I'm still drowning, and you along with me. That's what drives me crazy. I'm alone in that warehouse all night, thinking what you deserve to have. If you hadn't been fool enough to marry me...." Kim says "I married you because I love you. Things are going to work out. They're working out already. You've got a job, and you were afraid you never would. It's a step towards something better. A friend promised you it would be". Rocky says "Don't get me wrong, Kim. I've got a lot of respect for my brother Frank. He's gone far. He's a city councilman and only 33 years old". A few seconds later, there is a knock at their door. Rocky asks "Who could that be? He walks over and opens it. Two men are standing there, and one of them asks "Are you Rocky Stark?" He says "Yeah". The first man says "I'm Lieutenant Chambers, and this is Detective Rollins". Rocky asks "What do you want?" Chambers says "You're under arrest". Rocky asks "For what?" Chambers says "Suspicion of murder". Rocky asks "Who's murder?" Chambers says "A guy named Johnny Mallory".

The Adventures of Rocky Jordan - Pattern for Revenge
Monday Oct 13, 2025
Monday Oct 13, 2025
It was getting late, but business in Rocky's Tambourine Cafe is still booming. Rocky steps over to help behind the bar when he sees her come in the front door. She was young, pretty, and about twenty two or twenty three years old, wearing a brown suit with hat and gloves to match. She glances around nervously, then sees what she wants and heads for a back table where a guy about her age is finishing up his fifth double bourbon. Right away, a big argument starts and Rocky moves toward the table. Rocky asks "Anything I can do, lady?' She says "I'm most sorry, Monsieur. Please Jacques, we must go, the gentleman will help you". Jacques says "I do not need help, I know what I must do". Rocky asks "What is he talking about?" She says "He does not know what he's saying. If you would to assist him to a taxi". Rocky says "Sure, you're all right Jacques, everything's all right, here we go". As Rocky is helping him out the door, Jacques is saying "Do not touch me, let me go". Then, Jacques passes out. She says "Jacques, please". Rocky says "He can't hear you, lady. He's had one too many and passed out. There's a cot back in back in my office, we'll put him there for a while". She asks "Oh are you sure he will be all right?" Rocky says "Sure, all he needs is some sleep. You just run along, I'll let you know when he feels better". She says "Very well, Monsieur, I am Roxanne Beloit. Jacques is my husband. I will be in our room at the Hotel Royale. You will call then?" Rocky says "Sure, just don't worry". Roxanne says "Thank you. Thank you so much". Rocky and a couple of his waiters carry Jacques and lay him down on the cot. As Rocky starts back toward his bar, his phone starts ringing. Rocky answers it and says "Tambourine, Jordan speaking". Rocky hears a sinister laugh on the line. The voice says "It has been a long time, a very long time. Has it not, Jordan? Time is running out. Start counting the hours and minutes..."

Your Truly, Johnny Dollar - The Rasmussen Matter
Monday Oct 13, 2025
Monday Oct 13, 2025
Johnny Dollar is called to Los Angeles to see Mr. Ellis Rasmussen, father of the late Fred Rasmussen. He is met at the airport by the family's chauffeur and drove to the lush, green Holmby Hills section on the west side of the city. The chauffeur stops the car in front of the Rasmussen estate, a large two-story colonial home. As he steps out of the car, Johnny is met by a man with greying hair wearing a swallowtail coat. The man says "Hello, I am Hardy, sir". Johnny says "Hello, Hardy". Hardy says "Mr. Rasmussen is waiting for you. This way, please". They stop in front of a huge panel door. Hardy taps on it once, then pulls on the knob. As they enter, a tall man with a shock of pure white hair, rises from his chair and turns toward them. Hardy says "This is Mr. Dollar, Mr. Rasmussen". Rasmussen says "I want about four fingers of Sour Mash. What do you want?" Johnny says "You took the words right out of my mouth, Mr. Rasmussen". Hardy says "Very good, sir". Johnny says "He's a pretty nice fellow". Rasmussen says "We're all pretty nice fellows around here Mr. Dollar, sit down". Johnny says "Thanks". Rasmussen asks "What are you doing in Los Angeles?" Johnny says "Federal Underwriters of Hartford wrote a blanket policy for all Imperial Rubber Company employees. Your son was an executive with Imperial when he was killed in Malaya last spring. Federal owes his widow 25,000 dollars". Rasmussen says "I don't know where she is, Mr. Dollar". Johnny says "I see". Rasmussen says "I doubt if you do. Let me put it this way. I never met the young lady. Fred married her one night in Elko, Nevada. Two days later, they were on their way to Malaya. They were there for six months when the development station was raided by guerillas one night. Suddenly, I no longer have a son".

Howard Martin, a wealthy industrialist, is awakened at 1:30 AM from his sleep by the sound of his daughter, Connie, screaming "Daddy, help me!" He asks "What's the matter?" She says "Bob! He's dead Daddy, he's dead!" Martin says "Dead? What happened to him? Connie, get a hold of yourself". Connie says "I'm frightened Daddy. There was a man with the bandana over his face". Martin asks "Where Connie, where?" Connie says "We were at the old road near the lake. We were parked there, listening to the music on the car radio, when all of a sudden.... oh, it was horrible". Martin says "Sit down. Sit down while I call the police. Then, you've got to have a doctor to get something for your nerves". Connie says "He tried to hold us up. Bob had a gun in the car, and they fought for it". Martin picks up his phone and says "Operator, get me the police. I want to report a murder". Connie says "Oh, Daddy!" and suddenly passes out. Martin calls out for one of his employees "Walters, Lee, somebody, wake up!" Later, after the police arrived, District Attorney Garrett and Officer Harrington are in the library. Harrington says "The butler says we can wait here, Chief. The doctor is still in with a girl. She had a mighty bad shock". Garrett asks "Did she tell you where the killing took place, Harrington?" He says "Yeah, one of the old roads down by the lake, over the state park. I've got three squads beating around the lake roads now. They'll call us as soon as they find the body". Garrett asks "What time is it?" Harrington says "It's almost 5:00 AM. It will be getting light in half an hour". Garrett says "If the girl can't talk to us soon, we'd better get over to the lake with the men. Oh, here's the girl's father now". Martin says "How are you Mr. Garrett? I'm sorry to keep you waiting". Garrett says "I understand, Mr. Martin. May we see your daughter now?" Martin says "I'm afraid not. The doctor put her under sedation. She must have absolute rest for a few hours". Garrett says "Well, we better come back later then. Martin says "Thank you. I think that would be best".

Mr. Keen, Tracer of Lost Persons - The Engaged Girl Murder Case
Sunday Oct 12, 2025
Sunday Oct 12, 2025
On a wealthy, fashionable estate in Connecticut, a number of people are riding across the property on horseback. But two of them, Herbert Langley and his fiancé Audrey Stafford, have fallen behind the others. Herbert says "Better hurry, Audrey. The others are getting ahead of us". Audrey says "Herbert, wait. Let's walk the horses a bit. I want to talk to you". Herbert asks "What's the matter, darling? You look concerned about something". Audrey says "I am concerned about your sister, Martha. I don't think she wants you to marry me". Herbert says "Nonsense, Martha's very fond of you". Audrey says "She pretends to be, in front of you, but I believe she hates me". Herbert says "Now Audrey, don't you think you're being oversensitive?" Audrey says "Herbert, I know how much you love your sister and I didn't imagine you'd believe me, but it's true and I just can't...." Suddenly, they both hear the sound of a dog howling. Herbert says "That sounds like one of our dogs. It is. It's Sultan, my sister's dog. There he is, Audrey, near that clearing. Come on, let's ride over there". After a few seconds, Herbert says "Sultan, what's the matter, boy?" Audrey says "Herbert, look!" He says "It's my sister, Martha, lying in the thicket! Hold my horse while I dismount, Audrey". She asks "What's happened, Herbert? Has she been hurt?" Herbert says "Audrey, she's been struck on the head. Martha's dead!" Later, after the police start their investigation, Mr. Keen and Mike Clancy are called to the scene. They are told that someone must have struck Martha on top of a head with a heavy club and killed her instantly. Mr. Keen asks Herbert "Did this occur while you and your guests were out riding, Mr. Langley?" Herbert says "Yes". Mr. Keen asks "Was your sister Martha part of the group on horseback?" Herbert says "Yes, I thought she'd gone on ahead with the others". Mike Clancy says "Well, hitting a horseback rider on the head with a club when you stand on the ground, is not an easy trick. Somebody on the horse must have followed the girl and struck her from the saddle". Mr. Keen says "My partner, Mike Clancy has a good point there, Mr. Langley.

Peggy says "Gosh, Joe, it's so wonderful, you're home! I am so happy, I don't know what to say". Joe says "I feel pretty good myself". Peggy says "Now, you sit down over there and I'm going to fix you something to eat". Joe says "Wait a minute, food can wait. I've got some things to show you. This is for you, genuine French perfume". Peggy says "Oh, that's wonderful". Joe says "Look, here's something for Eddie, one of those fancy Heidelberg Steins. Peggy says "Oh, that's beautiful, Joe". He asks "By the way, where is that husband of yours?" Peggy says "Well, he is sleeping. I'll call him now". Joe says "Here, take a look at the rest of this junk. Here's a Nazi flag, and some German medals, and here is an honest-to-goodness German Luger. I took it from the owner personally". Peggy asks "How?" Joe says "Well, it's a long story". Peggy says "Oh, there's Eddie now, he's awake". Joe says "Hi Eddie". Eddie says "Oh, hello Joe. Welcome home kid. Oh, Peg, where did you put my brown suit?" She says "It's in the hall closet. Eddie, you talk to Joe for a minute now, I want to go out and fix us something to eat". Eddie says "Yeah. Well then, you look good kid". Joe says "Thanks". Eddie asks "What's all this stuff?" Joe says "Souvenirs, presents, junk. Oh, yeah, here's something for you Eddie, from Heidelberg". Eddie says "Oh, thank you. Hey, what's with the gun?" Joe says "That's a German Luger". Eddie says "Yeah? That's a good-looking job. Do you mind if I look at it?" Joe says "No, go ahead". Eddie says "Hey, this is okay Joe. Yeah look, I don't want to sound ungrateful, but could I maybe swap with you? The Lugar for the beer mug? I'll throw in a little cash on the side". Joe says "I'm afraid not Eddie". Eddie says "Okay, come on, let's go eat.

Saturday Oct 11, 2025
Saturday Oct 11, 2025
Two men named Mac and Louis were riding in a car which was pulling to a stop in front of a house in East Baltimore. Mac says "Okay, tell me about it later. Dump the car. Get rid of the car and we'll talk about it". Mac walks into the house and says "Kitty". She says "Alright, I'm here". Mac says "Well come in here, will you?" Kitty walks in and says "I was putting up my hair. Did you have any trouble, Mac?" He says "Not with the job. Stuck a gun on him and took the dough. That jerk Louis almost messed up everything". Mac shows Kitty the money. Kitty says "Is that it? How much?" Mac says "I haven't had time to count it yet, about three thousand, I guess. Kitty says "Then, I can have that new coat". Mac says "You're gonna have nothing". Kitty says "Oh Honey, you promised me, you said...." Mac says "Get your hands off me". Kitty says "I knew it. I knew you were lying". Mac says "Okay, so you knew it". Kitty says "Mac, if you don't give her up I swear I'm going to fix her so you'll never take another look. I know her, I know who she is". Mac says "There's no her. Leave me alone about it". Kitty says "Oh you lie about that too. Louis said the two of you...." Mac says "Listen, forget about what Louis said. He don't know the right time of day. I went in and heisted the joint. All he had to do was sit around behind the wheel. He couldn't even do that right. Don't listen to him". Kitty says "She's a blonde, isn't she? You're always a sucker for blondes". Mac says "No blonde. Forget about it". Kitty says "You're playing around with some washed out blonde and you expect me to keep my mouth shut?" Mac says "Yes, or pack up and get out. Go on pack up, who's stopping you". Kitty says "If you make a good score next time, can I have a coat?" Mac says "Maybe". Kitty says "Okay, that's a promise". Mac says "I said maybe. Now go finish your hair, you look like a slob".

Jeff Regan, Investigator - The Lonesome Lady
Friday Oct 10, 2025
Friday Oct 10, 2025
Jeff Regan walks into Anthony J. Lyon's office holding the original typewritten memo given to him from Melody, Mr. Lyon's secretary. Lyon asks Regan "Ever heard of a guy named John Arenzo?" Regan says "Nope". Lyon asks "How about a doctor named Maurice Wade, or a French dame named Marie Rochelle Portier?" Regan says "Nope. Should I?" Lyon says "Maybe. I don't know yet. It's all routine stuff on the American Insurance Company contract. They want us to do a little work for them. Their claim man came in about an hour ago all excited about Arenzo. He kicked off early this morning". Regan says "I can't very well meet him". Lyon says "There's a time and a place for wise cracks and this isn't it. Arenzo kicks off, and the American Insurance Company is gonna have to kick in with thirty five thousand dollars to his beneficiary, and that's Marie Rochelle Portier. She is no relation. A girlfriend I guess". Regan says "It's almost a bank buster for AIC. So, you want me to see her?". Lyon says "No, it's a bit ticklish of it turns out to be legitimate. Now you better look at the other angles before you see her. If AIC has to pay off to that dame, we might just as well say goodbye to their business. They can stand much treatment like that". Regan asks "You mean you want me to find a way for them to get out of it?" Lyon says "I didn't say that. If it's legitimate they'll pay". Regan says "That's nice". Lyon says "I want you to find out is how a guy carrying thirty five thousand dollars worth of life insurance winds up croaked in a hotel on Main Street with two dimes and three pennies sitting on the dresser". Regan says "It could happen". Lyon says "Sure it could happen, but you find out why it could happen. The man is worth twenty three cents alive, and thirty five thousand dollars dead".

The Epic Casebook - Crossed is the Telephone Line
Friday Oct 10, 2025
Friday Oct 10, 2025
The quiet, peaceful, if somewhat bleak, legal atmosphere of Middle Temple, is the location where the victim of a brutal murder was found. Her name was Marjorie Heathcliff and she was employed as a secretary at the firm. Inspector Carr of Scotland Yard is called to investigate. Arriving at the scene, Carr says "You're Sergeant Berry? He says "Yes sir, Bow Street Police. I've taken statements from the man who found the body and the caretaker". Carr asks "Where are they?" Berry says "In that office over there, sir". Carr says "According to operations, the man's name is Kramer and the cleaner is a Mr. Newman". Berry says "That's right, sir". Carr says "Present him with my compliments and tell him that I won't be a moment. Dr. McPherson and I will take a look at the body". Upon seeing the corpse, Dr McPherson says "Horrible. You know, inspector, I've been associating with violent crime for more years than I care to remember. But a sight like this, a young woman, in her prime of life, still makes my blood boil". The body was lying on the floor of what looked like a neat and tidy office, but there was nothing tidy about the corpse. The horror of the crime that was done to her, was there expressed on her face. Her eyes seemed to be popping out of her head. Her jaw sat down from an open mouth. Her lips blue. The color of her skin was an ashen white. All unmistakable signs of strangulation. Carr asks the doctor "What's your theory?" Dr. McPherson says "Well, judging from the position of the body, it looks as though she was walking to the front office when somebody attacked her from behind. You see here, Inspector, she was killed with either a piece of string or a length of cord or something". Carr says "The place been searched. Have you found anything?" Dr. McPherson says "No, not a thing as yet. We'll take the body back to morgue with us. We may find something in her fingernails". Carr says "Alright, you do that, Mac. I'll have a word with this Mr. Kramer".

Mrs. Leon Jacks is sitting at the telephone table in her home, talking to the Prison Warden. She says "But Warden, you don't understand. He says Mrs. Jacks, I can't just act on your say. You've left it too late. I'd like to help you...." She says "Try to understand. I've called the Governor, but I can't get him. This letter proves that my husband didn't commit the murder. Why can't I make you see? My husband would never have been found guilty if we could have produced this letter at the trial". Warden says "Mrs. Jacks, we always have these telephone calls before an execution. I know how you feel. I'm terribly sorry for you but there's nothing I can do. You didn't produce this letter at the trial...." Mrs. Jacks says "I know we didn't produce it, that's what I'm telling you. I found it tonight quite by accident between the lining and the covering of my overnight bag. If we could have produced it at the trial, my husband would never have been.... well, the case would have been dismissed. Can't you understand that you're executing an innocent man?" Warden says "But Mrs. Jacks, I tell you it's not in my power. You tell me one half of an hour before an execution and start talking about some letter you found. I just can't do it, Mrs. Jacks. It's something that's out of my hands". Mrs. Jacks says "Oh you're so stupid, I tell you this letter changes everything. At least you can delay the execution for twenty four hours until you've investigated. Warden says "Mrs. Jacks, believe me I can't do anything for him". She asks "Well then, who can? There must be somebody". Warden says "The only man in New York state who can stay an execution is the Governor". Mrs. Jacks says "But, I tell you, I called him. He's out of town, the Lieutenant Governor is out of town, everyone is out of town". Warden asks "Mrs. Jacks, who was the Appeal Judge?" She says "Judge McLean". Warden says "If you can get Judge McLean to phone me here at the prison, I'll delay the execution for twenty four hours".

The Adventures of Sam Spade - The Lazarus Caper
Wednesday Oct 08, 2025
Wednesday Oct 08, 2025
Timothy R Lazarus called Sam Spade's office at approximately 11:30 AM. Lazarus says "This this may sound like a poor sort of jest, Mr. Spade, but my name is Lazarus and I want you to bring me back from the dead". Sam says "Well, sounds interesting. Why did you die, when did you die, and how did you die?" Lazarus says "I was declared dead by the Appellate Court of the State of California, August 28th, last year by reason of seven years absence". Sam asks "Who took it to court?" Lazarus says "My wife, Emma". Sam asks "Insurance?" Lazarus says "Yes my wife and I agreed between ourselves to ensure my life in the amount of 100,000 dollars that she would collect on legal presumption of death after my disappearance and continued absence for seven years. That's the law Mr. Spade". Sam says "Yeah, it's been tried a lot of times. What went wrong in your case? Did your wife double cross you?" Lazarus says "If that's your attitude, I'm afraid I've come to the wrong man". Sam says "Uh-huh, you're still in love with her. Well, that makes it tough. You know they'll nail her for perjury if you prove you're still alive". Lazarus says "That's why I didn't go to the police. Even though we'd planned the deception together, she had reason to believe that I was actually dead". Sam says "Suppose you cover the whole thing from the beginning, Mr. Lazarus". He says "Yes, I married her back in 1940, and for a while we were happy. Then, she became restless". Sam says "You mean you were not able to support her in the manner to which she was accustomed. She was young, lovely, and you wanted her to have wanted her to have nice things, but on your meager salary, it was impossible". Lazarus says "Oh, I know it's an old story, but life is like that". Sam says "Well, you said it". Lazarus says "Yeah, well there you are".

The New Adventures of Nero Wolfe - The Hasty Will
Tuesday Oct 07, 2025
Tuesday Oct 07, 2025
Mr. John Blake, President of the Plymouth Building and Loan, arrives at the door to Mr. Wolfe's office. Wolfe says "Archie, answer the door". Blake says "Good evening. I'm John Blake". Wolfe says "Oh, yes. Come in, Mr. Blake. Archie, show Mr. Blake in and close the door". Blake says "Mr. Wolfe, I have a little business for you. Now, before you say anything, I know you're not a lawyer". Wolfe says "I'm not a member of the bar, let us say, Mr. Blake". Blake says "Of course". Archie asks "What kind of business, Mr. Blake?" He says "I have here a short will, which I have typewritten myself. I haven't signed it yet. Also, I have here a sealed envelope containing a letter, which I want you to be prepared to deliver to the addressee". Wolfe says "A will and a letter. Very well. Mr. Blake, you have the best attorneys in the city, and this is most assuredly the business of attorney". Blake says "Perhaps, but in this particular instance, I wanted an individual who had no interest in me nor previous knowledge of my affairs". Wolfe says "I see". Blake says "And when I leave here, I want you to forget the whole thing for the time being". Wolfe says "Indeed". Blake says "You have said it. Here's the will. You may read it". Archie reads the will out loud. "To my daughter, Anita Blake, I do hereby bequeath all my property, personal and real, including the portrait painting of her mother, my dear deceased wife, Marcia Blake. This will supersedes any and all instruments previously drawn". Wolfe says "So, simple enough, isn't it?" Blake says "That's all. Now, the pen, please, and I'll sign it. Now then, you sign as witness, Mr. Goodwin. You retain the will, Mr. Wolfe, and the envelope here which is addressed to Hilary Blake, my brother, who is now living in this city". Wolfe says "Your brother?" Blake says "He's just recently returned from twenty-five years in Australia. Though Hilary has written me several times, I have not favored him. We've been estranged these many years. Over, well, a certain unpleasant situation which this enclosed letter will clear up".

Box 13 - Death is no Joke
Tuesday Oct 07, 2025
Tuesday Oct 07, 2025
Dan Holiday receives a letter in Box 13 from an old friend named Alex Trendler. The letter read "Dear Dan, Knowing your Box 13 angle, I hope what I have to offer is intriguing enough to tempt you. At least, I think it can be interesting. As a matter of fact, and this thing has got to the point now where it's becoming downright vicious, and scares me a little. What the thing is, I'll tell you when and if I see you, if you can drag yourself away from town for a few days, consider this letter an invitation to join me at the country home of Bernard Trendler, my cousin. Enclosed are the directions for getting there. I'll meet you at the train station. As ever, Alex". Later, at the station, Alex says "Hey, Dan" Dan says "Alex, how are you?" Alex says "Dan Holiday, so you're still alive" Dan says "Why not, it's a good idea". Alex asks "Is this your luggage?" Dan says "Oh yeah, that's it". Alex says "Good, my car is just around the other side of the depot, this way". Dan asks "Am I supposed to ask what your letter meant, or do I wait until you get ready to tell me?" Alex says "Wait until we get into the car. That's it, the blue convertible". As they travel down the road, and talk about family, Dan notices a look on Alex's face and asks "What's on your mind, Alex? You're worried about something". Alex says "Yeah, I don't know whether I am or not, Dan. Look, maybe asking you to stick an oar in this was... well, presuming upon our friendship". Dan says "That's what friendships are for". Alex says "Well, up to a point". Dan says "Okay let's get to the point". Alex says "Well, it's practical jokes. I knew you'd look blank at that". Dan asks "What's the angle?" Alex says "Just practical jokes. Ruth and I are guests at Bernard Trendler's, he's my cousin. You ever heard of him?" Dan says "Oh yes, he showed up not too long ago to claim a fortune, didn't he?" Alex says "Yes, that's right. He ran away from home when he was 17. He was gone 15 years. Recently his father, that's my uncle, died and left the entire Trendler fortune to him. If he hadn't been found, it would have been divided among the rest of us.

Slate and Saylor are speaking to a man named Johnston over dinner at Shannon's Place in Havana. Slate says "One thing I don't understand, Johnston". He says "Please tell me. I'll try to explain". Slate says "Why are we sitting here? It just seems to me, well talking about this... Shannon's place is pretty public" Johnston says "It's known as reverse cloak and dagger in the trade, Mr. Shannon, as far as any of your customers are concerned, we're just sitting here eating cheesecake. It's fine cheesecake, Miss Duvall" She says "Thanks". Johnston says "Now, shall we go on?" Slate says "I don't think there's anything to go on about. It's just a matter of whether Saylor wants to help you or not". Johnston says "Sinclair is a clever man, like all foreign agents have to be. We can't have him know that intelligence is on to him, on to what his plans are, why he's in Havana. It embarrasses me to appeal to your patriotism, Miss Duvall, but whatever I have to do to convince you..." Saylor says "All I have to do is go to this party, show an ankle, and bear a shoulder to Mr. Sinclair. Is that it?" Johnston says "And convince him to drive you to this address in St. Thomas. I'll meet you there". Slate says "Let me get this straight. A man suddenly disappears from the States, a man named Faulkner. A guy loaded with secrets about nuclear physics. You think he's here in Havana and he's going to contact a foreign agent named Sinclair, right?" Johnston says "Right. Of course, we'd just love to pick up Faulkner and take him back, but we don't know where he is. Sinclair, we do. And Miss Duvall is going to bring him to us. I've gotten her name on the party's guest list". Saylor asks "Am I going, Slate?" He says "That's a question. She's got a chance to wear a strapless and she says, am I going, Slate? More cheesecake, Mr. Johnston?"

Jeff Lewis, piano player in The Rusty Gates Band, is arriving home at four o'clock in the morning after a show. As he walks in, his wife Claire asks "Is that you, Jeff? He says "Yeah, I thought you'd be asleep, Claire". She says "How can I sleep? You realize what time it is?" He says "Yeah, it's four o'clock". She asks "Where have you been? You got off at two o'clock". Jeff says "I went out for coffee with Rusty". Claire says "And I suppose you two were alone". He says "Oh look Claire, do we have to start that? I'm tired". She says "You're tired? Do you ever think of me sitting here until all hours of the night, worrying myself sick, wondering what's happened to you?" Jeff says "Oh, now you're being ridiculous. Where are my pajamas?" Claire says "Oh I'm ridiculous? I don't know why you bother coming home at all". Jeff says "I sometimes wonder myself". Claire says "Then, why do you?" Jeff says "Well, if you want to know....". Jeff stops for a few seconds and says "Look Honey, please, let's not fight. You know how I feel about you, but every night it's the same thing, over and over again". Claire says "I'm...I'm sorry Jeff. I don't mean to act like this, I just can't help myself. I love you so much I can't see straight". Jeff says "I love you too Honey". Claire says "You're a darling to put up with me". Jeff says "Come on, forget it". Claire says "Make you some coffee?" Jeff says "Yeah, that sounds like a good idea. Maybe you can make a sandwich too". Claire says "I thought you ate with Rusty. When you came in you said you were off with him". Jeff says "I was". Claire says "Then how come you're so hungry?" Jeff says "All I said was that I...." Claire asks "Was Rita there too?" Jeff says "Rita?". Claire says "Oh, haven't you met Rusty's wife? I i thought you two were old friends, after all she's been singing with the band for three years". Jeff says "Now, look...." Claire says "Don't think you're fooling me. I know what's going on". Jeff says "You're out of your mind". Claire says "Well, I'll say one thing for you Mr. Lewis, you were real clever but you're not gonna get away with it, understand? I'll kill you first!" Jeff says "Oh, that does it". As he turns to leave, Claire says "Jeff, where are you going? I didn't mean it Jeff honey, please".

Sergeant Rushton pays a visit to Chief Superintendent Lawton's office. Lawton asks "You want to see me?" Rushton says "Sir, we're collecting for Inspector Chew's retirement present and we thought you'd like to contribute". Lawton asks "Who got this up?" Rushton says "I did, Sir". Lawton says "You put me in a damned embarrassing position. The senior officers and myself have had our own collection round". Rushton asks "Just the senior officers, Sir?, that's not usual." Lawton says "Yes, I know it's not usual, Sergeant. The situation itself is not usual. We didn't think anyone else would bother, particularly the other ranks, and Inspector Chew is not exactly popular is he?” At that moment, Chew walks in and says "Did I hear my name mentioned?" Lawton says "Ah, Chew, come in, come in. The Sergeant and I were just saying your retirement is next week". Chew says "Happily counting the days until the end of next week, much to everyone's delight, no doubt". Lawton says "In your capacity as Chief Training Officer for the division, what is the subject of your lecture to the detective trainees? Chew says "The Waverton Kidnapping". Lawton asks "Is that wise?" Chew says "You can learn more from a failure than you can from a success". In the classroom, Chew says "Alright gentlemen thank you, simmer down play time's over. My name is Inspector Chew. So, you want to be detectives, then you'd all better listen to me. I've forgotten more about detection than you'll ever know". One student raises his hand. Chew says "Yes?" The student says "Collins, sir" Chew says "Yes, Collins?" He says "May I ask a question, Sir?" Chew says "If you must". Collins asks "Are you the same inspector to who caught the Hammersmith Bullion Gang in the 50's, Sir?" Chew says "Yes, that was one of mine, a long time ago. Have any of you heard about the Waverton Kidnapping?" One student says "It was never solved, was it, Sir?" Chew says "No, it was also one of my cases, the last one in fact. They wouldn't let me handle anymore after that".

Todd Gaynor, an advertising account executive, rushes to the offices of Lamont Lingerie, for an interview with Miss Beulah Lamont. As the meeting begins, Mr. Eugene Talcum, joins the interview. Miss Lamont says "Just in time, Eugene. Mr. Gaynor, I thought our general manager should be present at this discussion". Todd says "Yeah sure, but I'm afraid Mr. Talcum and I don't agree on methods". Eugene says "That is hardly surprising. Surely, as Miss Lamont knows, I have always disapproved of the distasteful modern methods of advertising". Todd says "Yeah, so what do we get? No impact. Now Miss Lamont, how would you like to make a hundred thousand dollars in increased sales?" She says "Naturally, I'd like it very much, but how?" Todd says "Your product is good, but your merchandising stinks. Lingerie is a glamorous product, and you've got to glamorize its sales angle". Eugene says "but not vulgarize it, Mr. Gaynor". Todd says "Depends upon how much you want to make money". Miss Lamont asks "You have a scheme in mind, Mr. Gaynor?" Todd says "Yes, give each set of lingerie you produce in a different style, a different name. Have an opening show like the dress designers and plug the show in your advertising. Let's take a look at this picture". Miss Lamont says "Miss Marilee Maytime. She's very attractive for a blonde, don't you think so Eugene?" He says "I'm afraid I consider her a common type". Todd says "Well, nine men out of ten wish that that type were more common. Merilee Maytime is an up and coming starlet. Her first film is not too good apparently, so she can use all the publicity she can get. There shouldn't be much difficulty in getting her to act as a model for your showing". Miss Lamont likes Todd Gaynor's plan so much, that he hires him, on a conditional basis, for the position of Advertising Manager of Lamont Lingerie, at a good salary and expense account. As Todd prepares for his opening show, trouble soon begins when he learns that Marilee Maytime's boyfriend is Duke Reinhardt, a dangerous racketeer.

Saturday Oct 04, 2025
Saturday Oct 04, 2025
It is early morning in August, 1921. In the Office of Homicide Detail in Los Angeles, Detectives Hamilton and Rico idly thumb through reports in an effort to pass the hours away until the dawn shift is over. Rico says "Remember the guy that was going around busting people over the head and then running?" Hamilton says "We got a line on him, but I guess he got wise. He just quit appearing". Rico says "Funny. Never did make much sense to me anyway. Can never tell her what these nuts are liable to do". Hamilton says "Well, I'd almost be glad to have another one turn up right now. This dawn grind gets me down. What time you make it?" Rico says "They'll be getting along. Yep. 4:30 AM" Hamilton says "Well, won't be long before the boys will be coming in. Then watch my smoke, bacon and eggs, and a great big helping and a shut eye". The phone starts ringing. Rico says "I'll get it. Homicide, Rico". The voice on the line says "Homer Bomar speaking. I just found a body out on the Ninth Street bridge. This guy's got three holes in him made by high power bullets. It struck me that you might be interested". Rico says "Okay, Bomar. Stick right there. We'll be out in a minute". Hamilton asks "Got something?" Rico says "Some guy stopped a barrage of lead off the Ninth Street bridge. Better take a run out and look him over". Hamilton says "I was afraid something would happen to spoil my breakfast". At the scene, Hamilton asks "Are you Bomar? He says "That's right". Hamilton says "Hamilton is my name. This is Detective Rico. Where's this fellow you called about?" Bomar says "Over there in the gutter. I hadn't moved him. Just made sure he was dead". Rico says "That shouldn't be hard. Hey, he really got it. I know this guy. It's Tony Morelli" Hamilton asks "What's his claim to fame?" Rico says "He had a record. We pulled him in a couple times for larceny and lately we picked him up on suspicion of bootlegging. He's got friends though and we haven't been able to pin anything on him". Hamilton says "Looks as though his friends decided to fix things up". Rico says "Yeah, it's a racket killing alright".

Aubrey Maddock, the Assistant City Editor of the Hartford Daily Current is sitting at his desk typing out a story and thinking of how quiet things are at the newspaper offices, when suddenly, a frantic young woman named Miss Lucy Wellington comes rushing in to his office and asks "Are you a reporter?" Aubrey says "Well, yes but..." Lucy says "I've just got to talk to you. I've got to tell you about it. Aubrey asks "Tell me about what?" She says "It's as if I did it with my own hands, but I didn't mean to. Honestly, I didn't". He asks "Didn't mean to do what? Hey look, take it easy". She says "I told the police, but they didn't believe me. He says "Relax, now, suppose you start from the beginning and tell me what's on your mind". She asks "Would you really listen?" He says "That's what I'm here for". She says "Okay, my father had been visiting me for a long time, and I have a tiny apartment. He was always rehearsing Shakespeare. Maybe that's what started everything. I hated it. He used to be an actor and he never got over it. I asked him "Dad, won't you ever forget you were an actor?" He said "Were an actor? My dear, you forget yourself". I said "Do I?" He says "Lucy, from your tone of voice, I judge that I have overstayed my visit with you". Lucy says "Dad, I don't mean to be cruel, but I guess you have in a way. I can't ever have my friends over. You're always here, quoting things at them or telling them about the parts you've played. It's just not fair". Dad says "I see". I said "Oh, Dad, I don't mean to hurt you. It's the last thing I want to do. When I was in Windsor last week, I stopped in to see that Mrs. Taylor for you. She runs a home in Windsor for the infirm". Dad says "Surely, you don't pretend to put me in that class". I said "That's just what she calls her home. For one thousand dollars, she takes care of you completely, gives you room and board from the day you get there until...." Dad says "Until they ring down the final curtain. Is that it?" I said "Well, yes. Dad, it would be nice for you. You'd have a nice room of your own, and I know that you would have company and be taken care of.

Late at night, Joshua Benson, an intelligence agent, accompanied by Miss Nancy Jones, is loudly knocking on the entrance door to the lobby of his French apartment. Benson says "Roberto, open the door. Roberto, wake up and let us in. Three Russian spies are after us!" Nancy says "Mr. Benson, you'll wake up everybody in St. Clair". He says "I'm only trying to wake up that old relic, Roberto. Confound these French apartment houses locking up tight at night. Roberto! For all he knows, three Russian spies might be after us". Nancy says "That would be exciting". Benson says "Ah, here he is now". Roberto opens the door and says "It is you, Mr. Benson. I should have known". Benson says "You should have been awake. I have a good mind to tell the manager you were sleeping on the job again". Roberto says "I am the manager. I will report myself to myself. Please do come in". Benson says "Let us enter, Miss Jones. The portals are open at last". Nancy says "Well, what a fascinating old place". Benson says "It's just an old chateau that Roberto bought cheap and remodeled into an apartment house. The only good thing about it is the view, straight out over the Mediterranean from a hundred foot cliff. That's what I pay my rent for, the view". Roberto says "Speaking of the rent monsieur...." Benson says "We will speak of it later. Miss Jones, you seem amused". Nancy says "You know, Mr. Benson, I haven't the faintest idea when you're being serious and when you're not. Not even though we've been together all day. I really didn't dream an intelligence agent would have a sense of humor". Benson says "Intelligence agent? Please do not honor me with fancy words. I am a businessman. Roberto, tell the young lady what business I'm in". Roberto says "Monsieur Benson is in the import export business. He import and exports intelligence. He is a spy. There are many spies on the Riviera, but monsieur is our favorite.

A young man named Rich Fowler is hitchhiking along the highway, when a friendly driver in a convertible stops and asks "Want a ride, young fellow?" Rich says "You bet". The driver says "Well, hop in". The driver introduced himself as J. Stewart Beldon. Rich thought he looked to be about 45 years old, but had no grey in his hair. He was also wearing a very nice camel hair coat. Beldon asks him "What's your name, son?" He says "Rich Fowler". Beldon asks "Are you married?" Rich says "No, I have enough trouble feeding myself". Beldon laughs and says "I said the same thing years ago. You'll change your mind with it". Beldon passes a car on the highway and says "9B-1863, a dud". Rich asks "What?" Beldon says "Oh, don't you ever play license plate poker?" Rich says "I never heard of it". Beldon says "It's just like regular poker, except instead of drawing cards, you draw license plates. Now, I drew that hand. The next car we see will be your hand. Hey, here comes one. As the car comes closer, Beldon says "4J-3134. You got two pair, threes and fours. You beat me". Rich says "Hey, that's a good game. What are the stakes?" Beldon says "Shall we say a hundred thousand dollars a hand?" Rich says "Oh sure!" They both have a good laugh. Later on down the road, when they both got hungry, Beldon stops at a fancy restaurant and picked up the check for both of them. Walking back to the car, Rich says "Boy, what a meal". Beldon says "I got to quit eating like that. My clothes are getting tight. Especially this coat". Rich says "Hey, that coat sure is a beauty". Beldon says "Oh, say, I've got an idea. Why don't you try it on?" Rich says "Oh, no, Mr. Beldon. I didn't mean it". Beldon says "Go ahead". Rich tries the coat on and it's a perfect fit. Beldon says "Son, you just got yourself a coat". Farther down the highway, Rich was thinking how lucky he was, and turned to thank Mr. Beldon again, when he notices a change. Beldon no longer seems to be the smiling host. Suddenly, while driving through some treacherous curves, Beldon threw open his door, twisted the wheel, says "So long, Sonny" and jumps clear. The car hurtles into space, with Rich alone in it!

A Case for Dr. Morelle - Act of Violence
Thursday Oct 02, 2025
Thursday Oct 02, 2025
Dr. Morelle and Miss Frayle are traveling on the road to visit Professor Stenberg in Lower Ashton. Miss Frayle says " What a lonely road, Dr. Morelle. It's difficult to realize we're only thirty miles from London". Dr. Morelle says "which from my point of view lends it an added attraction". Miss Frayle says "I always think that Essex is a bit cut off. Are you slowing the car?" Dr. Morelle says "I feel positive that I'm following the directions given to me by Professor Stenberg, but I'm not certain that he gave me the right ones to follow. Professor Stenberg is a trifle absent-minded, while I have reason to remember this locality from a case with which I was concerned". Miss Frayle asks "What was that, doctor?" Morelle says "A rather sorted affair, which wouldn't interest you in the slightest. But, I recall that there was a less devious road than this to Lower Ashton". Miss Frayle says "Oh, there there's a garage ahead. How about asking there?" Morelle stops at the garage, and Miss Frayle says "I'll ask this man. Are we right for Lower Ashton, please?" The man says "Lower Ashton? Oh, you're going the long way round". Miss Frayle asks "What's the matter?" The man says "I, well, that is...." Morelle says "I somehow thought there was a shorter route". The man says "That's right, sir. Yes. Take the second turn on the right, and that will cut off three miles". Miss Frayle says "Oh, you were right, Dr. Morelle, thank you". She turns to the man and says "I'm sorry to have bothered". The man asks "Anywhere in particular you want in Lower Ashton?" Miss Frayle says "Professor Stenberg's house. Perhaps you know it". The man says "With the second right, you can't miss it". Morelle says "Thank you". The man says "Good afternoon, Miss. Good afternoon, doctor". As Morelle pulls the car onto the road again, Miss Frayle says "It was funny, wasn't it?" Morelle says "What, my dear Miss Frayle?" She says "Well, that young man, the sudden look on his face, as if he'd seen a ghost. I believe it had something to do with you".

Night Beat - The Slasher
Wednesday Oct 01, 2025
Wednesday Oct 01, 2025
Randy Stone, of the Chicago Star Newspaper, was out making his rounds, looking for a story. So far, he came up with nothing, but a few shreds of the latest scandal. When he turned on to Harding Street, there was a story for him ready made. However, it was one that he was sorry to have to report. A frightened woman was lying on the sidewalk. The shoulder of her dress is ripped open and there is a red stain growing on her side. He walks up to the edge of the crowd standing there and pushes his way through. Randy says "I'm from the Press, Charlie". He says "Oh, hello Randy". He asks "What happened here, Charlie"? He said "She was waiting for a taxi. There were three or four people with her before she..." The victim says "He cut me with a knife. He just slashed me". Charlie says "Try to lie quietly lady. It'll be better". Charlie says to Randy "Now you know. It's the 14th case like this in three weeks". Randy says "Yeah, I know about him. They call him The Slasher". Like a good newspaper man, Randy gets as much information as he can, and then he phones it in. Whoever did it, moved into the darkness so fast nobody could get a good look at him, including the police. Feeling disgusted by the whole thing, Randy goes into Mike Crenshaw's Place for something cold to take the hot dry taste out of his mouth. Mike, behind the bar, says "I'd like to get my hands on that screw ball". Randy says "Well, nobody knows what he looks like, where he comes from, or where he goes". Mike says "Very bad. very bad indeed. Here, let me put a head on your drink". Randy says "Thank you. Mike, tell me, where did you get those new murals on the walls?" Mike says "We had them done last week by a guy named Rick Bennett, who works at the Hofbrau. The place looks like a magazine cover, huh?" Randy says "That's good looking art, for a bar". Mike says "We let him pay off his tab that way". Randy asks "What's the matter with the face on that girl. The one on the right?" Mike says "I noticed that myself. Maybe he messed up, but everything else looks really good". Randy didn't tell Mike what he was thinking, but it looked like a scar. Why would a guy paint a scar on a beautiful woman's face?

The Mysterious Traveler - Death Has a Thousand Faces
Wednesday Oct 01, 2025
Wednesday Oct 01, 2025
At the police headquarters of an eastern metropolis, Horus Riker, a patrol officer for the State Prison Commission, is seated at his desk, which, at the moment, is completely covered with gift packages. As Horus, a small, mild-mannered man in his late 40s, starts to open some of the gifts, there's a knock at his office door. Horus says "Come in. Oh, hello, Captain". The Captain says "Hello, Horus. Well, I see none of the boys forgot you. Twenty five years with the State Prison Commission. That's a long time". Horus says "Yes. I never knew I had so many friends. Well, look at all these gifts". Captain says "Well, here's another one, Horus. This is from me and the other boys in the homicide squad". Horus says "Oh, I don't know how to thank you and the others, Captain. You've all been so kind". Captain says "Ah, nonsense, Horus. You know how we all feel about you". Horus says "I'm really a very lucky man, Captain. I have a job I like, fine friends, and a wonderful wife". Captain asks "So, you and Millie are hitting it off okay, huh?" Horus says "Of course. I told you it would work out all right, even if I am twenty years older than Millie". The Captain says "Well, I'm glad to hear I was wrong. Here, let me help you open your gifts". Horus says "Thanks Captain" The Captain says "Looks as though half these gifts are boxes of cigars. I'm afraid you'll have to take up smoking, Horus" He says "I guess you're right. Well, this present doesn't seem to be cigars. It sounds like a clock". Captain says "A clock?". Horus says "Yes, I can hear ticking inside. There doesn't seem to be a card with it. Well, I'll unwrap it. The card is probably inside". Captain says "Wait just a minute. Let me see that package. Yes, there's a ticking inside, alright. It has cheap wrapping paper, no store label or return address. Why should anyone send you a wound up clock?" Horus says "Well, maybe they just wound it up to make sure it works". The Captain says "I don't like the looks of this". He picks up the phone and says "Mac? This is Captain Ross calling from Riker's office. Get the bomb disposal squad over here on the double. It's an emergency!"

Dragnet - The Big Watch
Tuesday Sep 30, 2025
Tuesday Sep 30, 2025
Detective Sergeants Joe Friday and Ben Romero were working the night watch out of Robbery Detail. It was 1:45 AM when they arrived at the Highland Park Division Booking desk with a suspect. Friday says "Hi Shepard". He says "Oh, Hi Friday and Ben. What brings you out here?" Ben says "We've got one to book, Shep. You want to do the honor?" He says "Okay. Just a minute. Let me get a new form". The suspect tells Shepard his name, address, and his age. Friday provides the location of arrest, the time of the arrest, and the charge. Shepard says "Let's check your property". Friday says "All right, Jackson. Everything out of your pockets. Put them on the desk". As Jackson empties his pockets. Ben says "Your watch, and that ring, too". An itemized list is made of all his possessions. He is then given a copy of the list. As Jackson is being led to the cell, Friday says "Wait a minute, you got nothing else to say, huh, Jackson?" He says "I told you all I'm gonna tell you". Friday says "Six robberies, six assaults, three attempted murders. It's a tough rap to stand alone. What about your pals?" Jackson says "You got my story". Friday says "Okay, take him". About that time, the Chief of Detectives, Thad Brown walks in. He asks "Do any good with Jackson?" Ben says "Not much, he's got a story and sticking to it". Brown says "Well, let's go in this office for a moment". Ben says "Good idea. My feet are killing me". Brown says "Gang of cheap hoods, armed to the teeth, slugging, shooting their way around town, coming from all directions". Friday says "We got it fairly well narrowed down. Nine out of the ten jobs they pulled, they operated either in San Pedro, the central area, or Hollenbeck. Ben says "The hold up men dress as army enlisted men. They steal a car, offer rides to officers, slug them, rob them, and shoot them. Same thing, ten times over". Friday asks "Has the army checked their personnel out at the fort?" Brown says "We're keeping tabs on them as close as possible. I don't think it's the work of any actual enlisted men".

Crime and Peter Chambers - Abigail Chrisenberry
Tuesday Sep 30, 2025
Tuesday Sep 30, 2025
Peter Chambers sits down on a barstool at a big beautiful nightclub called The Peacock Room. The bartender comes over and asks him "What will it be, Mac?" Peter says "Milk". The bartender says "Milk?" Peter says "You heard me, Pal" Bartender says "Yes, Sir. Milk it is". Down at the other end of the bar sits a very attractive blonde-haired lady, who also happens to have a glass of milk in front of her. The attractive lady gets off her stool and comes toward Peter, and asks "Are you Peter Chambers?" He says "That's me, lady. Doing a workout in the latest bottle-fed formula". She says "I want to talk to you. Somewhere alone". Peter says "No objections to that". She says "My place. The Hotel Baldwin, Suite 518". Peter says "Good enough. We go now?" She says "No, I'll go first. You come there in about five minutes". Peter says "Oh, real mystery-like, huh? Well, I suppose that's the kind of business I'm in. One slight, unimportant bit of information. What's your name?" She says "Abigail Christenberry. See you later, then". About five minutes later, Peter is with her at the Hotel Baldwin, Suite 518. She asks "Will you have a drink, Mr. Peter Chambers?" He says "I will, Miss Abigail Christenberry. Only if it's milk, I'll pass". After a few sips of scotch and soda, she suddenly says "I've changed my mind, Mr. Chambers. He asks "About what?" She says "About retaining you. There's no longer any need of your service". Peter says "Fired before you get hired. Everything happens to the private eye". She gives Peter a one hundred dollar bill for his trouble, and he goes back to his office. Later, his friend from the police department, Detective Lieutenant Louis Parker, stops by. Parker asks "You know a dame by name Abigail Christenberry?" Peter says "Oh, not as well as I'd like to". Parker says "Well, you ain't gonna". Peter says "Why not?" Parker says "She's dead". Peter says "Dead? Abigail Christenberry is dead?" Parker says "And my boy, they've got you tagged for it."

Sunday Sep 28, 2025
Sunday Sep 28, 2025
It is 11:30 on the night of May 22nd, 1947. The Stockholm Ranch, located in the middle of Carson County, Texas was darkened for the night, when the occupants were awakened by the barking of their dog. Florence says "Jim, wake up" Jim says "Huh? What's the matter Flo?" She asks "You here Jeep bark?" He says "Oh, kind of. I was half asleep". Flo says "It's funny, he barked and then shut up real fast". Jim says "He might have took off after something". Flo says "He kept on barking then..." Jim says "Be quiet for a second". Flo says "I don't hear him anymore". Jim starts to get up, and Flo asks "What are you going to do?" Jim says "I'm going to have a look-see. It ain't like Jeep to bark at nothing, then shut up". Flo says "Jim...Jim!" He asks "What's the matter? She says "Jim, somebody came in the house!" He says "Oh you probably just heard the kid tossing in his sleep". Flo says "No, I got a funny feeling!" Jim says "Alright, I'll put on a light and have a look". Flo says "I'm coming along. I want to go and see if...." At that moment, Flo starts screaming "No!.. No!" Lawkins says "The place is just like it was, Jace, except for the bodies". Pearson says "Kind of a mess, isn't it Sheriff. All three of them in their night clothes, you said". Lawkins says "Yeah. This is Jim and Flo's bedroom". Pearson says "Bed clothes mussed up. Whoever did the killing woke them up". Lawkins says "Might have been the dog that woke them up. Found him dead a piece from the house". Pearson said "It's funny that Jim Stockholm didn't have a gun with him". Lawkins says "Yeah, if he thought someone was prowling around outside, he would have grabbed his gun".

Dangerous Assignment - The Football Play
Sunday Sep 28, 2025
Sunday Sep 28, 2025
As Steve Mitchell walks into the commissioner's office, he says "Ruth says you want to see me". He says "I do Steve, your plane to Indochina leaves in an hour". Steve says "Indochina? Look, can't you send me to some nice peaceful place sometime?" The Commissioner says "You'd probably die of boredom". Steve says "Or shock. Well, okay. What's the deal?" Commissioner says "Think back three months ago today, Steve". He says "Three months ago, yeah, she was a redhead what about her?" Commissioner says "No, I'm talking about Paul Sarvage. Remember him?" Steve says "Sarvage, sure, one of our government clerks who was discharged three months ago on suspicion of being connected with a spy ring in this country. What about him?" Commissioner says "At the time, Sarvage claimed he was innocent. Last night we found out Sarvage was right. One of those witnesses in the case suddenly felt like talking. He arranged a secret meeting with one of our agents, but on the way to that meeting he was shot. He lived just long enough to tell us that he and the other witnesses have been paid to say what they did. The whole case against Sarvage was a frame". Steve says "This is a great time to be finding that out who framed Sarvage, and why?" Commissioner says "You remember at the time, Sarvage claimed he had complete information about the spy organization in this country. He was framed to discredit him and shut his mouth". Steve says "I still don't see where I.... hey wait a minute. You said I was flying to Indochina. You mean that's where Sarvage is now?" Commissioner says "Here, take a look at this European newspaper picture showing prisoners of the guerrillas in Indochina". Steve says "Hey, one of those prisoners looks like Sarvage". Commissioner says "We think it is, Steve. We know he went to Indochina and signed up with the French to fight the guerrillas. Now he's in their prison camp. You must get him out of there before they realize he has information that is vital to us. You've got your assignment, Steve. Good luck".

The Adventures of the Falcon - The Case of the Mighty Muscle
Sunday Sep 28, 2025
Sunday Sep 28, 2025
It's early Sunday morning and the streets of Manhattan are deserted, except for a broad shouldered young man named Al Compton who strolls down East Eighty Sixth Street and heads for home. But unknown to Mr. Compton, he has company. Twenty feet behind him is a tall, lean gent who matches him step for step, and only after Compton has gone two blocks is he aware of his shadows. Compton turns around and says "Alright, friend, what's the idea?" Eddie, the man following him, asks "Speaking to me?" Compton says "Yes, why are you tailing me?" Eddie says "Tailing you? Now why would I want to do a thing like that?" Compton says "That's what I want to know". Eddie says "You're imagining things, Compton". He says "Yeah? How come you know my name?" Eddie says "You're a celebrity. Everybody knows Ken Brady and the fellow he's grooming to follow in his footsteps, why it's one of the big success stories of our time". Compton says "Who do you think you're kidding?" Eddie says "Alright Compton, I'll put it to you straight. You going right home?" Compton asks "Why?" Eddie says "A friend of mine wants to talk to you". Compton asks "Who?" Eddie says "Nick Daniels". Compton asks "What does Daniels want with me?" Eddie says "Oh? Then you're quits with the boss?" Compton says "Maybe". Eddie says "You know that Daniels ain't no two-bit operator?" Compton says "I know his territory is Indianapolis, what's he doing in New York?" Eddie says "That's what he wants to talk to you about. I got a car around the corner". Compton says "I'm sorry, I never take rides with strangers". Eddie says "Look, Compton, as far as I'm concerned, you can keep on walking and Heaven bless you. But Daniels told me to bring you to his place, so you see the position that puts me in". Compton says "That's your tough luck". As Eddie hits him with a blackjack, he says "Oh no friend, it's yours.

Broadway is My Beat - The Frank Dunn Murder Case
Saturday Sep 27, 2025
Saturday Sep 27, 2025
Detective Danny Clover is assigned to investigate a homicide at an exclusive apartment hotel, while the street is busy with the sights and sounds of the carnival. Danny was summoned by Mr. Tracy, the hotel manager. They are both in a guest room, looking at a body of a man sprawled across the silk sheets of his bed, now bloody from a bullet wound. Because blood like that can stain the reputation of an exclusive hotel, Mr. Tracy makes a suggestion. He says "This can be, can be..." Danny says "What, Mr. Tracy, what can it be?" He says "Handled discreetly, of course. You can do that. You have the power, the know-how, to keep it out of the papers". Danny asks "Anything else?" Mr. Tracy says "Nothing more I can think of at the moment". Danny says "That's good. Now you can do something for me". Tracy says "Understand me, Mr. Clover. Managing this place is all consuming. I spent years at school, here and abroad, learning the ins and outs of the profession, the values..." Danny says "With all that education, maybe you can spell out for me the murdered man's name". Tracy says "The fellow on our bed was once Frank Dunn, a bartender, of all things. A rather crude chap, I thought". Danny says "But genteel enough to pay the tab in this slick joint of yours". Tracy says "They do bartenders like Dunn well at the Trade Winds, I hear". Danny asks "The club on West 52nd?" Tracy says "I wouldn't know where the place was". Danny says "Tell me more about Dunn". Tracy says "Well, he appealed to the female of the species, shall we say. They called on him constantly, at all hours". Danny asks "Did he get a call tonight?" Tracy says "Well, that's difficult to say, but do you not detect the faint odor of a lingering perfume?"

Stand By for Crime - Eddie Flores Frame-up
Saturday Sep 27, 2025
Saturday Sep 27, 2025
Earlier in the week, a young couple parked up on Mulholland Drive in Los Angeles had been found murdered. A police car had happened along about five minutes after the tragedy and found a man standing over the slashed bodies with one hand on the door of the car. The young man was identified as Eddie Flores, a parolee. The officers reported that Flores seemed dazed when they approached him, but he snapped out of it when they accused him of the crime. Flores slugged one of the cops, and managed to evade the other. He escaped by jumping over a steep embankment and disappearing into the brush. By Wednesday of that week, Eddie Flores still had not been taken into custody. On Thursday morning, Newscaster Chuck Morgan arrived at his office around 11 o'clock. His secretary, Miss Carole Curtis, was waiting for him with a concerned look on her face. Carole says "Right now, there's a female waiting to see you in the outer office. Chuck asks "Who is she?" Carole says "Well, hold on to your hat. She's Eddie Flores's girlfriend". Chuck says "His girlfriend? Come on, what are we waiting for?" Carole says "Chuck, wait, she's a nice little thing and I..." Chuck says "The nicer the better. A direct quote from Eddie Flores's girlfriend will help my seven o'clock broadcast". Carole says "But Chuck, if you'll only listen...." He says "Hello, I'm Chuck Morgan. I understand you know where Eddie Flores is hiding out". Carole says "Chuck, I didn't say that". He asks "Anything you care to say, Miss..." The girlfriend says "Constance. Emily Constance is the name, Mr. Morgan. And to answer your first question, yes, I do know where Eddie's hiding out and I'll be glad to tell you". Chuck says "You will?" Carole says "Emily, before you say any more, let me tell you about this man". Emily says "You won't have to, Miss Curtis. Thank you just the same. I know a lot about Mr. Morgan. I never miss one of his broadcasts. I know he's fair and honest and tries to help people like Eddie who's falsely accused of something he didn't do".

Nick Carter, Master Detective - Murder Goes to College
Thursday Sep 25, 2025
Thursday Sep 25, 2025
Nick Carter and his assistant Pasty Bowen are in Nick's car racing toward Mount Albin's College for Girls in response to a hurried phone call from the dean of the school. Patsy says "But if this girl killed herself, Nick, what are you supposed to do? When a girl kills herself, there's no criminal to catch". Nick says "If it was suicide, Dean Margaret Collingwood wants me to find the reason for it". Patsy says "Oh, isn't that a little out of your line?" Nick says "Well, yes, it is, Patsy, but she's an old friend of mine, so I said I'd do it". Patsy asks "But why does she care why the girl killed herself?" Nick says "Oh, she thinks that if some of the parents felt that the girl disliked the school enough to kill herself to get out of it, they'll take their own daughters out of Mount Albin's in droves. The school will be ruined". Patsy asks "How did she die?" Nick says "The dean said she found a box of sleeping capsules on the table beside the girl's bed, together with an empty water glass. She thought they might be the cause". Soon after arriving at the college, Nick is interviewing Margaret. He asks "Have you notified the police yet, Margaret?" She says "Why, no. I wanted you to look things over first, Nick". He says "I see. Who found the body?". Margaret says "When Miss Jordan failed to appear for breakfast, one of the maids was sent to see if she needed help or if she were ill. When no one answered the maid's knock, why of course she came back to me". Nick asks "Then you found her?" Margaret says "Yes, I found her dead".

Under Arrest - Van Gogh's Paris Road
Thursday Sep 25, 2025
Thursday Sep 25, 2025
Captain Jim Scott picks up the ringing telephone in his office and says "Captain Scott speaking". The voice on the line says "Captain Scott, this is the special guard at the Blake Art Gallery. I want to see you about the alarm you hooked up on the Van Gogh painting we are exhibiting". Scott asks "What's the trouble?" The voice says "I'd rather not say on the phone. It's very important". Scott says "Alright, Lieutenant Gavin and I will be right over here". The voice says "No Captain, come alone if you don't want to cause any unnecessary murder". Scott started to ring Lieutenant Gavin, but something about the voice told him that he'd better appear to comply with the instructions. As Scott drove out toward Stanchion Boulevard, he felt like laughing. Nothing exhibited in this city had ever been as well guarded as that painting. Van Gogh's painting, "The Paris Road" was on tour of the US as a goodwill gesture from a country whose goodwill we wanted. That's why the gallery had a special guard. That's also why we'd installed an electrical shocker alarm which could only be controlled from the police station. When he arrived at the art gallery, Captain Scott goes inside, and asks "You're the guard here?" He says "That's right, Captain Scott. Is there something I can do for you?" Scott asks "What was that phone call about?" The guard says "Phone call? What phone call?" Scott says "Look, I'm a tired man. Did you call police headquarters about ten minutes ago?" The guard says "No, I haven't called anyone". Suddenly, the art gallery phone starts ringing. The guard picks it up and says "Blake Art Gallery. Yes, he's here. It's for you Captain". Scott says "Hello?" The voice on the line says "Police Captain Scott, I'm glad you saw fit to do as I said". Scott asks "Who is this?" The voice says "That really doesn't matter. What does matter is that there are people in that room with you. Innocent spectators who might get hurt if you don't do exactly as I say".

Mr. and Mrs. North - Masquerade
Thursday Sep 25, 2025
Thursday Sep 25, 2025
Pam and Jerry North are at Muldoon's, a small cafe on Bleeker Street. Jerry asks "How about another cocktail before we eat, darling?" Pam says "No, let's order". Jerry says "Okay. Waiter, menu, please" Pam says "Oh, my, this is a wonderful place. I never get tired of it, do you?" Jerry says "Nope". Pam says "I remember the first time I ever came here. I was in college then". Suddenly, Pam sees someone that she previously knew. Jerry asks "What's the matter, dear?" Pam says "It is him". Jerry asks "Who?". Pam says "Jeff Williams". Jerry says "Jeff Williams?" Pam says "The man sitting over there at the table nearest the bar. See him? The one with the mousy little blonde". Jerry says "Yeah, I see him. But who is he?" Pam says "I knew him in college. Oh. Excuse me a minute, Jerry. I'll be right back.". Pam goes over to his table and says "Jeff Williams, of all people. What a surprise". He says "I beg your pardon?" Pam says "Oh, you don't remember me. I'm Pam North. Only my name was Saunders in college". He says "Saunders? College?" Pam says "Modern European history. Professor Blair's class". He says "I'm afraid this is a mistake. Apparently you have me confused with someone else. My name is Vincent Wayne, and this is my wife". Pam says "But... but this is impossible". He asks "Do you think I'm lying to you, Mrs... I don't believe I caught your name". Pam says "North". He says "As far as I know, Mrs. North, I've never seen you before in my life". Pam says "Well, I... I'm sorry. Excuse me". Pam goes back to her table and says "Jerry, let's get out of here". Jerry says "Get out? Why?" Pam says "Never mind. I want to go, right now". Jerry says "But darling, we haven't eaten. What's the matter?" Pam says "Well, that wasn't Jeff Williams". Jerry says "Oh, so that's it. And you're embarrassed". Pam says "No, I'm not embarrassed. I just can't understand why he'd lie, that's all". Jerry says "Lie?". Pam says "Yes, that man is Jeff Williams".

The Adventures of Frank Race - The Adventure of the Silent Tongue
Wednesday Sep 24, 2025
Wednesday Sep 24, 2025
Frank Race and his friend, Mark Donovan, are in the state penitentiary visiting an inmate on death row. As they are walking behind the silent guard, Mark says "Tell me something, Race. How come they're letting you see this inmate Marty Quinn? Aren't they going to execute him tomorrow night?" Frank says "Yes, It's in the nature of a last request. Apparently Quinn has no family and no friends who would risk a visit". Mark says "No, but he still has the two million bucks from that armored car stick up. A lot of good it'll do him now". Frank says "He's kept it well hidden though. The police haven't found a trace. Neither has the insurance company". Mark asks "Did they send you in to pump the guy before he goes?" Frank says "No, Marty Quinn sent for me himself. He knows I've been on the case". Mark asks "Do you think he will tell you where the loot is?". Frank says "No. I'm afraid he has something else on his mind". The guard says "Here we are. Your friend will have to wait out here, Mr. Race". Frank says "Grab a seat on the bench, Mark". The guard says "I'll have to frisk you, Mr. Race, prison regulations". Frank says "Certainly, I'm not armed". Guard says "Alright, come on. Here's the cell, Mr. Race. The warden said you can have three minutes. You're not to touch the prisoner and nothing is to pass between you". Frank says "I understand". Marty says "Hello, Race. You look uncomfortable, have a seat". Frank says "Time is short, Marty. Better get to the point. You want to tell me where the money is?" Marty says "I told you once before. I don't know anything about any money. I ask you to come up because I think you're a guy I can trust. Can I?" Frank says "If it's a legitimate request, the answer is yes". Marty says "Alright, Marty Quinn ain't my real name. I'll begin there. This might surprise you, but I used to be on the square. I had a business once. A grocery store in Cold Springs on the Hudson. I've got a mother and two daughters still living. The girls are grown up now. They ain't seen me or heard from me since they were kids. They don't know nothing about me". Frank says "Fortunately, for them". Marty says "I'm glad you said that because I want to keep it that way".

Walk Softly, Peter Troy - The Haunted Harridan
Wednesday Sep 24, 2025
Wednesday Sep 24, 2025
Julie, Peter Troy's secretary, has a luncheon date with this old school friend, a real doll named Toni Mailing. Toni blows down her ear about the troubles of having a witch for an aunt. Toni says "I'm worried about Aunt Harriet, Julie, I really am". Julie says "I can't see what the problem is, Toni, I mean I know your aunt has always been, well a bit odd, but I don't mean that I'm currently...." Toni says "I know what you mean. You don't have to apologize about that. Anybody would take her for a witch". Julie says "Well, witches have been a little out of fashion lately, but at least she doesn't frighten you". Toni says "She used to when I was a child, and that creepy old house of hers, oh it still gives me the willies, even in daylight". Julie says "I suppose she wouldn't leave it for the world". Toni says "No, she's always said she'd only leave that house to die". Julie says "Oh well, it's her house. If she likes...." Toni says "That's what worries me, Julie. Lately she says she's been getting messages telling her she must get out". Julie says "Messages? You mean somebody's trying to force her out?" Toni says "No, not that kind of message, you know, mystic messages". Julie says "What, spooks?" Toni says "Yes, writing on the wall she says". What does she mean?" Toni says "I don't know, but she's very upset about it. The last time I was up there she was saying she'd have to go if the messages keep coming and, of course, she's convinced she'll die if she ever does leave". Julie says "Oh poor thing. I suppose she spent so many years getting messages from the other side, as she calls it, that she's probably given to imagining all kinds of things now". Toni says "I don't know, but I'd like to help her. Oh Julie! Look it's two o'clock. I have to fly! My boss will murder me for being back late from lunch!" Later, back at Troy's office, Julie says "Pete, how would you like to spend a night in a haunted house?" Peter says "Oh, that would be swell, in....a what?"

I Was a Communist for the FBI - The Sleeper
Tuesday Sep 23, 2025
Tuesday Sep 23, 2025
At first, Matt Cvetic thinks it's a trick to put him on edge and at a disadvantage for whatever's going to happen. Then, he realizes that comrade Revson is really worried. Deeply puzzled, he stands looking out the window holding that official looking paper in his hand. He's worried about it, but Matt sees that Revson is also memorizing it. He turns to Matt and says "Comrade Cvetic, I have an assignment for you from the highest source". Matt asks "The Kremlin, in person?" Revson says "Cvetic, you know Shepherd Ryker of course". Matt says "That loud communist baiter? Revson says "Shepherd Ryker is an extremely dangerous man. His work in Washington is strategic and his personal campaign against the party is embarrassing". Matt says "It's time we did something about him too. Revson says "We are about to do something now. Mrs. Ryker lives in this city, a charming woman reportedly". Matt asks "What has she got to do with it?" Revson says "She is one of us". Matt says "Mrs. Shepard Ryker is a communist? She can't be. It just isn't in the books". Revson says "But it is. She joined the party ten years ago. She's attractive and young. Actually too attractive for the ordinary work of the party. We assigned her to return to her usual life, to forget she was a member of the party, until we could call upon her for special duties. These orders are it". Matt asks "We are calling her back to active service?" Revson says "You will make an appointment with Mrs. Ryker, and acquaint her with her assignment. She is to use her influence with her husband to make him cease his attacks on the Communist Party". Matt says "Suppose she says no to the proposition on Shepherd Ryker". Revson says "We will entertain no alternative".

Philo Vance - The Cardinal Murder Case
Tuesday Sep 23, 2025
Tuesday Sep 23, 2025
Tony Cardinal, ex-racket boss, is talking to his butler, James, about what he should wear for his date this evening. Tony asks "James, what color tie do I wear with this?" James says "With a double breasted blue suit, Mr. Cardinal, I would suggest this one, a maroon tie with blue figures. Tony says "Maroon, that means red. I always thought that was some kind of a dope". James laughs a little and says "That word is moron, sir". Tony says "Well, I got this thing on. How's it look?" James says "Oh, precisely correct sir, precisely". Tony says "You know, sometimes I can't get over it. Me, Tony Cardinale, ex-racket boss, with a dozen English cut suits and an English butler. You know, this is really living ain't it?" James says "Why I imagine so, sir". Just then, the telephone rings. James answers it and says "Mr. Cardinal's residence". The voice on the line says "Is Mr. Cardinal at home? This is Miss DeLeo speaking". James says "Just a moment, Miss DeLeo". Tony picks up the phone and says "Hello, Honey". She says "Tony, I'm glad you waited for my call. I was delayed a bit. I'd like to go for a drive tonight, if you don't mind". Tony says "Who minds, we'll go driving forever if that's what you want. I'm buying a new car this afternoon. I'll get it, and pick you up at about 7 o'clock. Bye". Tony says "What a dame, Jamesy. She was the one who was here last night". James says "Yes sir. Wasn't she the one who seemed so concerned about some individual who disliked you intensely sir?" Tony says "Yeah, she meant Al Bailey. He's a skunk and who cares whether a skunk likes you or not as long as you keep out of his way". Meanwhile, on the outskirts of town, Al Bailey is talking to a guy named Mike who works for him. Bailey says "Now, do you know what you have to do?" Mike says "Yeah, I think so, I walk over to the car, start it up, drive past here, where you're standing, and start shooting". Bailey says "That's right, but you start shooting at that target on the other side of the road. Yeah, we're a million miles from nowhere out here and nobody will see or hear us".

Monday Sep 22, 2025
On the afternoon of September the 5th, Charles Franklin, president of the Franklin Nylon Company, a small but vital subcontract firm supplying materials to parachute manufacturers, is alone in his office dictating to a mechanical recorder. He says "And that, Mr. Harding is the entire story. I had no rest since this horrible thing happened. I'm no better than a traitor and a murderer. I do not ask for forgiveness. I deserve none". He stops the recording, gets up and walks to his door of his office and opens it. Miss Brewster, his secretary, says "Yes, Mr. Franklin?" He says "Will you please come right in, Miss Brewster?" She comes into his office, and he says "I want you to see that this recording is delivered to the local Counterspy field office". She says "Counterspy? Yes, immediately". Franklin says "That will be all, Miss Brewster". She says "Mr. Franklin, please don't think I'm speaking out of turn, but you haven't been yourself lately. And well, I've been worried about you". He says "You don't have to worry about me anymore, Miss Brewster. I'll be all right soon. All right. Now, please see that the recording is delivered". She says "Yes, sir. I will". Miss Brewster walks out of his office and suddenly a gunshot is heard. She runs back in and says "Oh, Mr. Franklin!..Mr. Franklin!...She runs to the door and says "Ann, call the police right away! Mr. Franklin has just shot himself!

Sixteen months after the Easter Blitz of 1941, the work of clearing out bombed out areas of London was still progressing. On the 12th of July 1942, the Scotland Yard information room received an urgent call from Police Constable John Dunn of the Kensington district. A patrol car in which Chief Inspector Purcell was riding was dispatched to the scene. a partially destroyed Baptist Chapel. Purcell was directed to the spot by PC Dunn, who was on point duty at the road intersection. Dunn says "Right over there, sir. Where you see the men standing. They found something, sir, the men working here". Purcell says "Right, thank you. Morning boys, what have you found?" One of the workers asks "Who are you, mate?" Purcell says "I'm Chief Inspector Purcell, of Scotland Yard. What's up?" The worker says "Down, sir. Down there in that old burial vault". Purcell asks "But, what is it?" The worker says "A skeleton, sir. He's dead". Another worker says "Hop down and charge in, Sean, with your torch". Sean gets into the vault and says "You see, sir, here he is". Purcell says "Stand to one side, will you?" Sean says "He's under this stone slab, sir. See?" Purcell says "I see him. Well, what's so strange about a skeleton in a burial vault?" Sean says "There ain't been anybody in there since 1934, sir. I was in that gang that moved the old corpses out of here in 1934. We didn't leave a one". Sean sneezes, and Purcell says "Bless you". Sean says "It's the Quick Lime down here, sir". Purcell asks "Quick lime? How did Quick Lime get down there? Sean says "You're the detective, mister. We just work here".

Mark and Julia Manning were the kind of happy go-lucky husband and wife who knew everyone and went everywhere. Early one evening, they were in their apartment in Midtown New York, getting ready to go to the theater, when suddenly, there is a knock at the door. Julia opens it, and a man says "Greetings and salutations, I have something for Mr. Mark Manning. Is he at home?" Julia says "He certainly is". The man says "Splendid, and would you be Mrs. Manning?" She says "I would". The man says "My name is Faraway, of Faraway Business Counselors and Managers Deluxe". Mark asks "Who is it Julia?" She says "It's for you, Mark. His name's Faraway". Mark says "Hello Mr. Faraway, however, right now we're in a hurry. If you'd like to make an appointment, meet me, say at 2 o'clock next winter". Faraway says "I have a mission to accomplish tonight. Here's a paper for you". Mark asks "A summons?". Faraway says "Take it and be surprised. It's a deed to the Locust Club, that grand that magnificent bistro at the river's edge where New York and Westchester meet. It's all yours my boy". Julia says "Mark is he kidding?" Mark says "I don't get this, Julia. It's a deed made out to me by Lou Barton". Julia asks "Who's he?" Faraway says "He's your husband's angel, Mrs. Manning, the man who never forgets a service". Mark says "Mr. Faraway, there must be some mistake I never heard of the guy". Faraway says "Please, sir. Mr. Barton is my client". Mark says "Sorry, but what did I do for him?" Faraway says "Let your mind go back six years to a certain episode in Pittsburgh". Mark says "I wasn't in Pittsburgh six years ago". Faraway says "Modesty, my boy, the purest of all virtues and you have it abundantly. Well, I have fulfilled my mission of goodwill, now I must say goodbye". As Faraway leaves, Julia says "Of all the nutty things to happen. What do you make of it?" Mark says "A gag, Julia. Somebody's having a a lot of fun".

Mike Slade is sitting in the lobby of Normand Lodge in Switzerland when a new guest arrives. Slade could tell he was a fellow American, and probably a member of the diplomatic mission at Berne. At the front desk, the guest asks "You have a reservation for me?" The clerk asks "The name, monsieur?" He says "Frederick Haywood". The clerk says "One moment, monsieur". Slade was sitting in the lobby close to the front desk so that he could hear the names of the new arrivals. Haywood asks the clerk "Well, do you have the reservation or not?" The clerk says "Yes, here it is, monsieur. The reservation was made yesterday from Berne. The room is being prepared now, sir". Haywood says "Let me know when it's ready. I'll be in the bar". Slade followed him into the bar, and found him at a table by the window looking out over the mountains and down into the green valley where Switzerland became France, Nazi occupied France. Slade says "Welcome to Normand, Mr. Haywood". He asks "Who are you?" Slade says "My name is Mike Slade. I couldn't help overhearing your name at the front desk". Haywood asks "You're an American?" Slade says "That's right. You mind if I sit down? Thanks. Up here to do a little skiing, I suppose?" Haywood says "Perhaps". Slade asks "Planning to stay long?" Haywood says "That depends on a number of things, none of which are your business". Slade says "Relax, Mr. Haywood. I'm not on the enemy's side. In fact, I'm not on anybody's side. I'm just a plain, ordinary, private citizen". Haywood says "Oh, and what are you doing in Switzerland?" Slade told him the whole sad story of how he shipped out of San Francisco when he was 15, how he'd jumped ship in Shanghai, how he'd spent the next 25 years gambling his way around the world until he hit it big on a roulette wheel in Paris for a million francs. Slade says "However, a week after I won it, the Germans marched into Paris and my money wasn't worth a thin dime. I got away and landed up here at Normand and have been waiting ever since". Haywood asks "Waiting for what?" Slade says "Why, for someone to win this war, of course".

Boston Blackie - The Derailed Gold Train
Saturday Sep 20, 2025
Saturday Sep 20, 2025
Bob and Tom, locomotive engineers and employees of the company that owns Metropolitan Flyer Express, are on the train as it speeds through Danville, Illinois. Bob asks "Is that you, Tom?" He says "Yeah, Bob". Tom asks "Are we on time?" Bob says "Yeah, we just high-balled through Danville". Tom says "Oh, we're coming to that bad curve, huh?" Bob says "It's not the curve that's bad, Tom. It's the grid crossing just around it that I don't like. Hope they make an underpass out of it pretty soon. Where have you been?" Tom says "Back in the baggage car, and I've never seen so many armed guards in my life. What are we carrying?" Bob says "Gold, and plenty of it. We go nonstop from the capital all the way to the city". Tom says "Gold, huh. Well, I guess if we were back in the days of Jesse James we'd be worried about being stopped. Hey, Bob, we are coming to that crossing". Bob says "Yeah, and then that crossing". As the train travels through the dangerous curve, Tom says "Hey Bob, look. There's a car stopped on the crossing!" Bob says "Yeah, I see it!" Tom asks "Can we stop in time?" Bob says "No, we couldn't see it after coming around that curve! We're going to hit that car, and we're going to hit it hard! Hold on Tom!" A terrible crash is heard. The next day, Blackie is talking to Mary on the phone. He says "Hello Mary, this is Blackie". Mary says "Oh hello Blackie. Are you back in town?" He says "No Mary, I'm not. I'm still down here in Danville at the train station". Mary asks "When are you coming back?" Blackie says "Well, that's why I called you Mary. I've just finished my business here, but there's not another train out of here for six hours, so I won't see you until late tonight". As he finishes up his phone call, he soon learns of the previous day's events concerning the Metropolitan Flyer Express.

The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes - The Boscombe Valley Mystery
Friday Sep 19, 2025
Friday Sep 19, 2025
Dr. Watson and his wife, Mary, are having breakfast when they are interrupted by a telegram. Mary, noticing his behavior upon reading it, asks "Well John, what did Mr. Holmes have to say?" Watson asks "How on earth did you know this is from Holmes?" Mary says "A telegram from a patient would have you rushing from the room at once. Why else would he wire you if he didn't want you to rush off somewhere for an investigation?" Watson reads the telegram aloud "Have you a couple of days to spare? I have just been wired for from the west of England. Will be glad if you could come with me. Air and scenery perfect. I leave Paddington by the 11:15 train". Mary says "Well, Dr. Anstruther could stand in for you. He owes you a favor. You have been looking a little pale lately. You certainly could do with a change, or have you suddenly lost interest in Mr. Holmes and his cases?" Watson says "I should be ungrateful if I were not, seeing what I gained through one of them". Mary asks "Well?" Watson says "I'll go and pack. I have only half an hour." Later, on the train, Mr. Holmes says "It's really very good of you to come, Watson". He says "It's very good of you to ask me". Holmes says "It makes a considerable difference to me having someone I can thoroughly rely on". Watson says "Thank you. So, what's the case?" Holmes says "The Boscombe Valley Tragedy, they are calling it. It seems to be one of those simple cases that seem so extremely difficult. The more featureless and commonplace a crime is, the more difficult it is to bring it home". Watson asks "So, there are no leads?" Holmes says "On the contrary, they have established a very serious case against the son of a murdered man". Watson says "It's a murder then". Holmes says "Yes Watson, it's a murder".

Elliot Preston begins his new job as private secretary to Mr. Archibald Mitchell, president of the Intercontinental Banking Corporation. While attending to his duties, the telephone rings. Preston picks up the phone and says "Mr. Mitchell's office. Uh, just one moment, please" He turns to Mr. Mitchell and says "Sir?" Mitchell asks "Well, what is it, Preston?" He says "There's Mr. Richards outside to see you in regard to the Watson matter". Mitchell says "Tell him to take that up with Granville. I can't be bothered". Preston returns to the phone and says "Ask Mr. Richards to see Mr. Granville, please. No, he's in conference right now. Oh, incidentally, I see that Mr. Richards hasn't made an appointment. His name isn't listed in my book. Now, make certain that no one disturbs Mr. Mitchell unless he's made a previous appointment. Yes, and please pass that information on to the other girls in the office". Preston hangs up the phone. Mitchell says "Well, I see you're already taking charge of the office, in spite of the fact that you've only been with me for six hours". Preston says "Six hours and twenty minutes, sir. If I'm to get any discipline out of the office staff, it's essential that I show my authority, with your permission, of course". Mitchell says "That's all right with me. It's why I hired you. To keep things moving around here and relieve me of unessential details". Preston says "I hope I'll fill your requirements, sir". The phone rings again. Preston picks it up and says "Mr. Mitchell's office. Oh, just one moment". He turns to Mr. Mitchell and says "It's Mrs. Mitchell, sir". Mitchell says "Oh, Barbara, send her right in. Well, you're in luck, Preston. You're going to meet the most wonderful and the most beautiful woman you've ever seen in your life". Preston agreed. So much, in fact, that in one's years time, his relationship with Mrs. Barbara Mitchell changed completely.

In an old-fashioned office building in New York City, on a sultry summer afternoon, Detective Lieutenant Reeves is making a routine visit. He walks into an office and says "Good afternoon. It says on the door Bradford Gault, Private Investigator. You're his secretary?" She says "Yes, I'm Kathleen. May I help you?" He says "I'm Lieutenant Reeves of the Police Department. Yes, you can help me. If you know anything, I want to know" She says "Well, I wouldn't know anything you couldn't find out by asking Mr. Gault. He'll be back in a minute". Reeves says "Nice quality, loyalty. How long have you been working for Mr. Gault?" She says "Several weeks". Reeves asks "What do you know about him?" She says "I like him". Reeves asks "Does he keep you busy?" She says "I sharpen pencils, do the typing, answer the phone, and mind my own business". Gault walks in and says "Well, look who's here. Hello, Reeves. He says "Hello, Gault. What are you working on these days?" Gault says "My income tax. Why?" Reeves says "Nothing special. Last time I called on you, you were on 6th Avenue. Why didn't you tell me you were moving your office over here?" Gault says "Why should I? I notified the commissioner of licenses". Reeves says "But you didn't notify me. I like to know these things, too. I've taken a professional and personal interest in you. I promised my friends in San Francisco to see that you didn't get into mischief. You're an impulsive youth, you know". Gault says "Look, I got a fast shuffle out west. All I'm asking is a fair chance to work up a legitimate business. I'm playing this by the book, and I won't even trip over a comma". Reeves says "I hope not. Okay, Gault. I'll see you around, I guess". Kathleen says "It's nearly 6 o'clock, Mr. Gault. I'll leave, too, if there's nothing else." He says "There is something else. Would you mind having dinner with me?" She asks "Is this part of the job?" He says "It is tonight".

Lieutenant Ben Guthrie escorts Mr. Beckham, a possible witness, to the viewing area of the police line-up. Beckham identifies the third man in the row, Tom Pearson, as the person he witnessed climbing down the fire escape outside his apartment. Guthrie says "Sergeant Grebb, hold number three for interrogation. Later, in the interrogation room, Guthrie and Sergeant Quine are present with Pearson. Guthrie asks "Well, figure out where you were yesterday afternoon?" Pearson says "I told you. I was watching the chess players in Jackson Park". Guthrie says "We showed your pictures around over there this afternoon. It's funny nobody remembered seeing you". Pearson says "It's real funny because that's where I was". Guthrie asks "You like chess, huh? Pearson says "I got interested". Sergeant Quine asks "How does a bishop move?" Guthrie asks "Yeah, how does a bishop move on a chessboard?" Pearson says " I just watch. I don't know the rules". Guthrie asks "Well, doesn't it get pretty dull if you don't know what's going on?" Pearson says "I got nothing else to do. It's a nice day, so I watch some old duffers playing chess. You're going to throw me in jail for that?" Quine says "You were identified in the line. The man who identified you said you were climbing down a fire escape". Pearson says "I told you I was in the park watching a chess game". Guthrie asks "You know Michael Hunter?" Pearson says "Yeah". Guthrie asks "Do you know someone killed him? Pearson says "No, but I can't say I'm unhappy about it." Quine asks "You were booked back in 47 for assaulting Michael Hunter. Is that right?" Pearson says "That's right. He kept bothering my kid sister".

George and Brooksie are in a bar named Joe's Oasis waiting to meet Mr. M.J. King. However, the time is getting late and Joe the owner and bartender is wanting to close up the place. Joe asks "Why don't you want a drink? Oh, never mind, never mind. Use up the stools. Keeps the leather in condition. Here, eat up the pretzels, there for nothing. Stale too". George says "Look, we're just sitting here, friend. You don't really mind, do you?" Joe says "Well, I was just gonna lock up when you walked in. Library's closed, I guess". George says "Look, we're waiting for somebody. We'll buy something pretty soon. Chin up". Joe says "Why? In Joe's Oasis, it rains inside. Have some flat champagne". Brooksie says "Business can't be so bad if you sell champagne". Joe says "A couple was in here just before you. They were happy, rich, and showing off. It's that kind of a neighborhood. Everybody wants something big and gets it and goes someplace else". Brooksie says "To you life is pretty complex too, isn't it?" Joes says "Look around you, lady. It's the only business I had tonight". George says "Well, don't shoot yourself, friend. We'll take some coffee". Joe says "Big sale, I'm out of the red. What this bar needs is a television set. Only I haven't got the money yet". Just then, the telephone starts ringing. George says "Never mind, Joe. I'll get it". He picks up the phone and says "Hello. Joe's Oasis". A lady's voice on the other end says "I want to speak to Mr. Marlin King". George says "King? Brooks, give me that letter. Hurry, please. Is that M.J. King?" The lady says "I called his club. Yes, yes, of course. Marlin. I called his club. They said he was there at the Oasis". George says "Oh, I'm sorry. No, he's not. I'm here to meet him myself. Yeah, that's right. My name's George Valentine. Look, can I take a message? Or do you want him to call you?" The lady says "Oh. No, tell him I'll write him. Tell him not to get in touch with me. I'll write him. I'm leaving. I can't wait for him". George says "Hey, slow down, will you? Who are you? She says "Tell him. He won't understand, but tell him something's happened and I have to leave. Cynthia. My name's Cynthia".

In the course of sixty five adventurous years, Philip O'Donnell spent a good portion of this time in jail for swindles of various kinds. He was a handsome man with an ability to falsely display solid character and respectability. His hunting grounds for the swindles were the commuting trains to and from large cities. Meanwhile, at the home of Stanley and Hazel Teller, a letter is received by special delivery. Hazel signs for it at their front door. Stanley asks "What was it, dear? She says "A special delivery letter for you. Who do you know in Pittsburgh?" He says "Nobody". She says "It's from the Federal Steel Company. Is that one of your clients? Maybe they want to buy some advertising". Upon opening the letter, Stanley says "It's a check for a dollar and 72 cents, from the office of the Vice President of the Federal Steel Company". Hazel asks "Whatever for, Stanley? Tell me what it is all about". He says "Well, it happened four days ago on 5:20 train. This nice looking old man sat next to me. When the conductor came around, the old man had lost his ticket and his wallet, so I offered to pay his fare". Hazel asks "Is that all?" Stanley says "That's all. Of course, I didn't realize that he was an executive at Federal Steel. He also said that he's going to be in the city on the 19th and he would be pleased if we could have dinner with him and go to the theater in appreciation of my kindness". A few weeks later, Philip O'Donnell, having entertained his victims at the theater several times and sent numerous small presents to the wife, eventually allowed himself to be invited to their home for occasional dinners. At one of the dinners, he asks Stanley "Do you invest at all in the stock market?" Stanley says "A little now and then". O'Donnell says "I'm going to tell you something, but I must ask you to keep it in the strictest confidence. Federal Steel will shortly announce a new issue of common stock. It will be offered for ten dollars a share. Now, I can buy some of that stock for you at seven dollars before the issue is made public".

Edward Dudding, Britain's leading expert on Medieval life and superstition, pays a visit to Alfred Smythe, secretary of the National Science Association. Smythe says "Blast it all, Dudding. I almost wish you hadn't been so brutally honest in your report on that Carswell paper". Dudding asks "Why, what's the trouble?" Smythe says "Oh, he's such a frightful fellow. He's raising a terrible row". Dudding asks "You mean Carswell himself?" Smythe says "Yes, it's bad enough a vicious charlatan like that calling himself a scientist, but now he's taking all his vindictiveness out on me". Dudding says "Well, sorry old chap, it's really me he would like to get at". Smythe says "As a matter of fact, that's just what his last letter was about. He wants to know what supposed authority wrote the report rejecting his paper". Dudding says "You didn't give him my name". Smythe says "Heavens, no. As a matter of fact, Dunning, I haven't and I won't and for a very special reason. Call it silly, call it crazy, call it what you will, but I have an uncanny feeling about that man, Carswell. Do you know anything about him?" Dudding says "Nothing. I've never seen him. I only know that he wrote a paper called the Truth of Alchemy. It was hopeless". Smythe asks "Precisely, and why was it hopeless?" Dudding says "Well, besides being abominably written, it was supposed to prove that alchemy, black magic and such rot actually exist. I think the man really believes it". Smythe says "Undoubtedly he does, and that's what I mean. He lives in an isolated old house in Warwickshire. He's rarely seen elsewhere and in his whole career he's written only two things, this paper and the history of witchcraft, published ten years ago".

Mrs. Oliver pays a visit to Inspector Caswell at Scotland Yard to report her missing daughter. Caswell says "I understand, Mrs. Oliver. Perhaps your daughter thought she would let you know, but didn't after all". Mrs. Oliver says "I wish I could believe that, Inspector, but I can't. Daisy was so determined when she left that night". Caswell says "And since she went to the train, you've heard nothing". Mrs. Oliver says "I wired Ron. I never liked him. Something, I don't know, I thought my Daisy would do better for herself than a chicken farmer. Anyway, I wired, asked him if Daisy was there. This is his reply". She hands the message to Caswell. He reads "Thought Daisy coming Saturday, not Friday. Went to meet her, not there. Letter follows, Ron Smith". Caswell asks Mrs. Oliver "This was last Saturday?" She says "Yes. I wired on Monday, then this answer came back the same day. The letter came in yesterday, Wednesday". Mrs. Oliver gives the letter to Caswell, he reads "Dear Mrs. Oliver, you do not know how shocked I am. Daisy missing since Friday afternoon. This is really terrible. She wrote, asking me to meet her Saturday". A short while later, Inspector Caswell travels to Locksborough and Sussex, the nearest town to Ron Smith's chicken farm, the railway terminal for the area. He turned first to that prime source of all rural information, the local pub. Caswell says "Evening, landlord. A pint of beer, please" Landlord says "Yes, sir. Of course". A familiar newspaper reporter walks up to Caswell and asks "Haven't I seen you some place before, my good man?" Caswell says "What? Oh, Jack Sheen. You have seen me some place before. You're not down here on business?" Sheen says "I am, and so are you. Do you think the girl is dead, Caswell?"

Shortly after four o'clock at the Blue Note Cafe, a huge middle-aged man named Big Ben Flack, enters the bar, orders a beer, and empties his glass in one gulp. He tosses a buck to Ethelbert, the bartender, and starts out. Before he reaches the door, it opens and Casey and Anne are coming in. Casey says "Well, hello, Ben". He says "Hello, Casey. How are you, Miss Williams?" She says "Fine, Mr. Flack". Casey asks "What are you doing on this side of the river, Ben?" He says "Oh, I cross the bridge occasionally on slumming trips to see how the other half lives. I'm a little pressed for time, Casey, so don't take any wooden nickels". Casey says "Yeah, I'll try not to. So long". Flack says "Nice to see you, Miss Williams. So long". She says "So long, Mr. Flack". Casey says "Hi, Ethelbert". He says "Hello. Say, you two know that big guy who just went out? Casey says "Sure, don't you know him?" Ethelbert says "No, but I'd like him to come in often. He'd just give me a buck for a 15-cent beer. His face is awful familiar, Casey, but I...." Casey says "Well, you've seen his pictures in the papers hundreds of times, pal. That's Big Ben Flack. Yeah, the boss of Hook Ridge. He runs almost everything on the other side of the river. Ethelbert says "Oh, sure. I get him now. What's he doing over here?" Casey says "He probably came over to get a breath of clean air. The stench of his political machine must get too high for even Ben once in a while". Ethelbert says "I hear Flack ain't so active in his organization as he used to be. They say a smart lawyer named Lockhart gives most of the orders now". Casey says "Yeah, well, you can gamble that any orders Lockhart gives are those that he gets from Ben. The big guy has that Hook Ridge section in his pocket, and he's gonna keep it there until he dies or goes to jail". Anne says "Well, there's not much chance of his going to jail. He can get away with murder. And he's gotten away with it, too".

It is eight o'clock in the morning, and in the bustling city most people are up and about their business. However, the attractive apartment of Eric Belden is ominously quiet as Lettie Stone, the daily cleaning woman, enters. As she moves toward the bedroom door, she says "That's funny, Mr. Belden is always up at this hour. He's usually finished with breakfast too and on his way to the studio. I don't see any breakfast dishes. The bedroom door is closed and the key is on the outside. That is strange". Lettie knocks on the bedroom door and says "Mr. Belden? Mr. Belden, are you in there?" Lettie says to herself "I better open the door and see. He might be sick". She slowly opens the door, and looks into the room. She says "Oh...Oh heavens! He has been shot! He's dead!" Just then, Miss Katie walks in and asks "What is the matter?" Lettie says "Oh, Miss Katie, where did you come from?" Katie says "I just walked into the apartment. You left the front door open Lettie. What's the trouble?" Lettie says "Eric, he's dead, Miss Katie!" She says "Oh poor Eric. I knew he'd been depressed lately, but what a horrible thing to do, to kill himself that way". Lettie asks "You think he did it himself, Miss Katie? I better call the police". Katie says "Go ahead and call them, Lettie, but I tell you it's suicide!" A little while later, Mr. Chameleon and Detective Sergeant Dave Arnold are at the scene. While Mr. Chameleon is looking at the body, he says "Dave, look at this. The position of the gun was placed here too carefully. This wasn't suicide, it was murder!"

The Adventures of Philip Marlowe - The Heat Wave
Wednesday Sep 10, 2025
Wednesday Sep 10, 2025
Spring was only three weeks old but the sun bore down on Los Angeles with the middle of the summer vengeance. At noon it was 102 degrees in the shade. Marlowe tried to make sense from the words of a telegram he just received from one Karen Driscoll Jr. no less, of Knob Hill San Francisco. It told him to go to the Palace Theatre, a burlesque house on Main Street, and watch the performance of the featured dancer. Then, get backstage and take a close look at her face. After that, meet the seven o'clock plane from San Francisco and report what I'd seen to Miss Driscoll Jr. It was a strange request coming from Knob Hill but the enclosed $50 money order wasn't kidding, so he perspired his way down to the Palace Theatre. There instead of the usual 30 beautiful girls sign over the marquee was a 50-foot gold banner that screamed "The Heat Wave, Who is She?". The showcase cards that led to the box office were all a circle of question marks that centered a woman wearing a strange gold mask and little else. Marlowe bought a ticket and went inside just in time for the tail end of the matinee, a baggy pants comedian was just winding up a south of the border routine as he sat down. The comedian says "I was kidding, but there was Manuel, my brother, Manuel Labor. He was the laziest man in Mexico. Yeah, I'm telling you he got a job shooting bulls for the government. He shot 800 bulls a day. Yeah that made him the biggest bull shooter in all of Mexico". Next, came a guy in a yellow shirt that stepped into the spotlight with his arms raised. He said "Ladies and gentlemen, you're now privileged to witness one of the most unusual and breathtaking spectacles ever presented on any stage. In a moment you will see her, the woman of mystery, performing exotic rites to the pagan sun god of the Incas. Exactly as they were performed 3,000 years ago in the temples of the Andes, but who is she who is this woman and who knows what secrets lie behind her mask of gold. The Palace Theater presents the most marvelous, the beautiful, but dazzling, the mysterious Heat Wave!"

The Whistler - An Eye for an Eye
Wednesday Sep 10, 2025
Wednesday Sep 10, 2025
Just before dawn, a small seagoing yacht with a crew of four and a passenger list of five puts out from the Honolulu Yacht Basin and heads southwest into the open sea. This is the yacht of Dr. Paul Durant, scientist and marine biologist, for many years a resident of the islands. Dr. Durant is already in the ward room as one by one his guests arrive for breakfast. Dr. Durant says "Keep your course there due southwest, Captain. The captain says "Due southwest? This summer weather is treacherous". Durant says "Due southwest. I'll tell you when to put about". Captain says "Yes, Doctor. Just as you say". Professor Mallory says "Morning, Doctor". Durant says "Oh, come in, Professor Mallory. Breakfast in a few minutes". Mallory says "I've been on deck for some time, Doctor. I can't understand it. We seem to have lost sight of land". Durant says "Have we? Fog, perhaps". Mallory says "No, no sign of fog. I thought we were going to cruise around the island". Durant says "Oh, well, it gets too rough when you stay close to shore". Mallory asks "Does it?" Miss Ona Raymond says "Good morning, everybody. Where on earth are we? I don't see land anyplace. What goes? I have a feeling we're miles out to sea". Durant says "I ordered the ship out to deeper water so we could do a bit of hunting". Ona asks "Hunting?" Durant says "Hunting for a nice school of big fish. A lot of killers out here now. We should be able to catch one of them". Miss Karen Somerset says "Good morning. Doctor, I'd like to ask you a question". Durant says "Yes, I'm sure I know what it is and I'm sure I can answer it. Why are we so far out to sea? Well, Karen, it's because I want to...." Hal Norton suddenly appears and says "Doc, I want to talk to you". Durant says "Come in, Hal. I know what you want to ask me. Karen just asked me the same question, so I'll answer you both at the same time. Well, this happens to be the season for catching the big ones. The killers, we call them. So, I decided to put out a way in order to get a crack at one of them". Hal asks "Killers?" Durant says "Yes. Apparently you're not a fisherman, Hal, but I'm sure you'll find it interesting.

Gil and Jackie are the owners of a summer health resort, however, they are currently having difficulties with money. They are hoping to secure a loan from one of their guests, Mr. Burroughs, but Jackie had doubts they would be able to do so. Early one morning, Jackie sees Gil in their room and says "Good morning, Gil. You're up early". Gil says "Not very. I didn't get to bed at all". Jackie says "Oh, and that means..." Gil says "Never mind, honey". Jackie says "Never mind what? So Burroughs wouldn't lend us the $2,500. We'll get it somehow. Maybe there's another way besides borrowing from Peter to pay Paul" Gil says "What are you talking about? I got it out of him". Jackie says "Gil, all this? $2,500? Well, you certainly don't act very happy about it. I could have sworn you didn't get...." Gil says "Let's get down to breakfast. I'm hungry". Jackie says "But Gil, the whole $2,500?" Gil says "That's what I said". Jackie asks "In cash? You mean that he carries that much around?" Gil says "He was going to deposit it Monday morning. Now, look, why the questions? We've got the dough now. Forget it". Jackie asks "Is he still here?" Gil says "No, he left". Jackie asks "On the 8 o'clock train? Had you drive him down?" Gil says "Jackie, for Pete's sake. No. Not the 8. He took the milk train". She asks "How do you know?" He says "I left him at the station". She asks "Oh, with the secretary, with Marsh?" He says "No, no. By himself". She says "Gil, what aren't you telling me? Did you have words over that loan?" He asks "What put that in your head?" She says "Well, if there wasn't any friction, why did he pick up and leave at that ungodly hour alone?" He says "Oh, who knows? Anyway, it's over. Forget it. I'm going downstairs".

The Man Called X - A Ruby for Pearl
Tuesday Sep 09, 2025
Tuesday Sep 09, 2025
Ken Thurston accidentally meets Pagon and his date, Miss Martin, at a New York supper club. A seemingly ordinary incident without the slightest hint of the strange and dangerous things to follow. Ken says "How do you do, Miss Martin?" She says "Oh likewise, Mr. Thurston, only why don't you just call me Pearl. Everybody does, don't they Pagon?" He says "That's right, Mr. Thurston, of course it's all right with me you understand". Ken says "Pardon me, Miss Martin, I've been admiring that pin you're wearing. It's very unusual". Pearl says "Ain't it so, with all them different colored jewels in it". Pagon says "I just gave her that this evening, Mr. Thurston, two hundred simoleons. Nothing but best for Pearl". Ken says "Two hundred bucks, eh?. Miss Martin, I'll give you two hundred and fifty for it right now. Do you want to sell it?" Pagon says "Mr. Thurston" Pearl says "Gee whiz, I mean, well gosh, it's got a kind of sentimental value and all. Well, I just couldn't possibly... gosh, let me get it unpinned". Dagon says "Pearl!". Ken says "Here you are, five fifty dollar bills". Pearl says "Pagon told me about you and him going on secret missions, but he didn't say nothing about you being such a heavy spender". Ken says "Well, as a matter of fact, I came in here to look for Pagon. We've got to leave right away, on a secret mission". Pearl says "Oh ain't that the way it is, just when the party gets started". Pagon says "But Mr. Thurston...." Ken says "Come on, Pagon. Happy to have met you Miss Martin". Pearl says "Likewise, if you're ever around this way again...." Pagon says "Oh Mr. Thurston, I was just kidding her. I only paid ten bucks for that thing. I can get you a hundred like that. Ken says "You better buy them, Pagon, you will never get a real ruby any cheaper. Offhand, I'd say that's worth about a hundred thousand dollars".

Richard Diamond, Private Detective - The Bill Kirby Murder Case
Monday Sep 08, 2025
Monday Sep 08, 2025
Richard for was just about to leave his office to return Helen's baby picture, when a nice, older lady stops by his office. She asks "Are you Mr. Diamond?" He says "Yes, but I'm afraid you'll have to come back. I've got to take care of something this morning". She says "Oh, please. I don't know where to go". Richard says "Oh, now wait a minute. Something's really wrong, isn't it? I've got enough time to listen". She says "Oh, thank you". Richard asks "Who recommended me?" She says "My son. Oh, I've heard about you for several years. My name's Mrs. Lenoir Kirby". Richard says "How do you do, Mrs. Kirby? How does your son know me?" Mrs. Kirby says "He doesn't know you well, only by reputation. He was a private detective also". Richard says "Kirby?... Bill Kirby?" She says "Yes". Richard says "Wow. Now, tell me what's worrying you, Mrs. Kirby". She says "Bill has been acting strangely for the last month or so". He asks "What exactly do you mean by strangely?" She says "Well, he's changed. He's begun to act nervous and irritable. When his sister Gloria or I would try to find out what was wrong, he'd get angry. He got steadily worse. And then one morning, Gloria went into his room. He was asleep, so she started to hang up his trousers. When she turned them upside down, a lot of money dropped on the floor". Richard asks "What do you mean, a lot of money?" Mrs. Kirby says "Well, Gloria said there must have been several thousand dollars, mostly hundred dollar bills". Richard asks "Did he have another source of income?" She says "Oh, no. At least nothing I know of. Gloria, then started to put the money back in Bill's trousers, and he woke up. They had a terrible argument. The next day, Bill packed his clothes, left the house, and got a small apartment, but continued to help with our bills. Three days ago, Bill came over to the house. I could tell he was terribly worried about something. He gave me a package, told me to hide it until he came for it and not to open it. After that, he completely disappeared”.

Barrie Craig, Confidential Investigator - The Thirteenth Guest
Monday Sep 08, 2025
Monday Sep 08, 2025
Barrie is invited to an fancy, exclusive dinner party by a man named Badger Boris, the type of guy that is frequently the subject of high society newspaper columns. Boris presents Barrie's invitation personally. He says "Mr. Craig, you will of course be paid handsomely". Barrie says "Paid yet for coming to your big blowouts. Now I'm really overwhelmed". Boris says "Then you agree to come?" Barrie says "After you give me the other inducements". Boris says "Well, there will be fine foods there, I've ordered two hundred pounds of buffalo steak". Barrie says "What do i wash it down with?" Boris says "A special beverage that I had flown here from Istanbul". Barrie asks "What's for dessert?" Boris says "Raisin cake, a plebeian touch to offset the noxious effects of a too rich repast". Barrie asks "How prosperous will I be going home in the early AM?" Boris says "Your fee will be one thousand dollars". Barrie asks "Money flown in from Istanbul? Boris says "Oh no, American money". Barrie says "I'm your slave. Sketch out the requirements of my assignment". Boris says "Now, I'm giving an intimate costume party for certain selected friends. A masquerade, you understand? You perhaps read about other famous parties I've given in the past?" Barrie says "Who hasn't? Your parties generally make the front pages, and the police plotter. Your parties, they always break up in bloody brawls". Boris says "You are unfortunately accurate. You will circulate with the guests and when you sense that any of them are becoming too disputatious, too heated up, you will then exercise a tranquilizing influence". Barrie asks "Exactly, what do I do there?" Boris says "Well, a blow shrewdly delivered to the stomach, say where the damage cannot be seen. i don't want a lawsuit against me". Barrie asks "Where do I put the horizontal guest after I stiffen it?" Boris says "I have an emergency room set aside. You'll find bandages, smelling salt, and restoratives in it". Barrie says "Now, that's my job, a bouncer with kid gloves". Boris says "And a tuxedo. You must wear a tuxedo and a mask."

Leonard Foster, shipping clerk, won the leading role in the Shakespearean play to be given by the local community theater. He normally spent his lunch hour out walking with a girl or in a corner of the parking lot playing softball. However, lately he's been spending his lunch sitting in the office and memorizing his part in the play. While he is reciting his lines, the office phone rings. Leonard answers it. A lady on the line says "Hello, who is this?" He says "This is Leonard Foster". She says "This is Mrs. Rutledge. Is Mr. Rutledge about?" Leonard says "No Ma'am. Mr. Rutledge and the plant manager have gone off to lunch". She says "Oh, have they? Now Leonard, this is vital, did they drive off in Mr. Rutledge's station wagon?" Leonard says "No ma'am, they went by company limo". Mrs. Rutledge says "Oh, then I'm saved. Mr. Rutledge's station wagon is still in the parking lot". Leonard says "Oh, yes ma'am. I can see it just outside the window". Mrs. Rutledge asks "Do you drive?" Leonard says "Oh yes, Mrs. Rutledge". She says "Well, I'm just off Exit 11 at De Polisar Antiques. I just bought this absolutely, divinely authentic Louis Catto commode and I must get it home at once. Now, you're no more than five minutes away from Exit 11. We can have the thing home in ten minutes and you can be back at the office ten minutes after that. What do you say?" Leonard says "Well ma'am, I ...." Mrs. Rutledge says "Oh, the keys. Mr. Rutledge keeps a spare set in the upper right hand drawer of his desk. Leonard, please hurry I shan't draw a relaxed breath until we bring it home safely". Mrs. Rutledge hung up the phone before Leonard could say anything else. He said to himself "Well, she's the boss's wife". He retrieved the keys and made his way down to the Rutledge station wagon. As he turned the key in the ignition, a terrible explosion is heard.

The Lives of Harry Lime - The Hand of Glory
Sunday Sep 07, 2025
Sunday Sep 07, 2025
After being chased through the streets of Paris, Harry wanted very much to get out of Paris and France altogether. He was grateful to be on a boat crossing the channel to England. He wanted to quietly remain in England and look like just another bum. His arm was in a sling and he was feeling kind of faint, when he felt someone touch his arm. He turned to see a girl with wide gray eyes and dark lashes that spilled over her cheeks. She says "Excuse me. I've been watching you. Are you all right?" Harry says "Oh yes, I'm okay, thanks". She says "You don't look like it. Why don't you go downstairs?" Harry says "No thanks, I like the air". She says "It's so calm today, you can't be seasick. Your arm painful? I see you've got it in the sling. Are you sure there's nothing I can get you?" Harry says "No really, thanks, you're very kind but I'm all right". She asks "Are you in pain with that arm?" Harry says "It's not too good, but I'll be okay. Don't you worry about me". She says "Well, at least, sit down one of these chairs and let me find a steward and order you a drink or some tea. Oh please, let me do something for you. You really look all in". Harry didn't know how it was, but he felt better by her being around. Harry told her he had been involved in some tricky business negotiations and how the anxiety of it had made him exhausted. She says "What you need is a few weeks rest without any worries, without anybody chasing after you". Harry says "Chasing after? Oh yes, business associates you mean". She says "Life is so full of worries these days for everyone. You ought to come and stay in the village where I live. It's sleepy and quiet. Nothing ever happens there". Harry says "That sounds perfect. It will just suit me. What is your name?" She says "Helen".

Friday Sep 05, 2025
Friday Sep 05, 2025
Business at the Cafe Tambourine had slowed down, so Rocky decides to try some entertainment to increase the number of patrons at his place. A lady named Mousine Duvall came in asking for a job as a singer. All she asked for was a week's tryout and a little salary advance to keep her going. So, he hired her. It worked out well for the first three nights. On the fourth night, Rocky was in his office at about 10 o'clock, listening to the jingle of his cash register up front when it all started. He heard Mousine yell "What are you doing? Just who you think you are interrupting my song and grabbing me like a common woman of the street?" Rocky went to the door and could see Mousine screaming at a big, swarthy guy. Rocky walks up and asks "What's this all about?" The big guy asks "Who are you?" Rocky says "Jordan. I run this place. I don't go in for having my entertainers roughed up". The big guy says "Okay, Jordan my name is Ralph Garnett. I was only looking for a certain girl. I thought this might be the one. So, when she came by my table, I just reached up to turn her around. She slipped and fell into my lap". Mousine says "Fell? It is not so, Rocky. He pulled me". Rocky says "Alright, I'll handle it, Mousine". Ralph says "I didn't mean to cause this much of an incident". Rocky says "Try a different approach next time". Ralph says "Look Jordan, when I find the woman I want, there aren't gonna be any polite words wasted between us". Rocky asks "Did you ever see this guy before, Mousine?" She says "Never in my life, Rocky". He says "Alright, Garnett, suppose you blow". Ralph says "Okay, we're playing in your park. I'd like to meet you on my home ground sometime". Rocky says “I'll work you into my schedule".

Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar - The Life at Stake Matter
Friday Sep 05, 2025
Friday Sep 05, 2025
Johnny had just finished an investigation when he receives a call from Bill Ferguson at Continental Insurance and Trust. Bill says "I'm glad I caught you before you left Los Angeles. Johnny says "Oh, I was just about to check out of my hotel here in Beverly Hills and grab the morning flight back east". Bill says "Well, don't. Do you remember Alvin Peabody Cartwright?" Johnny asks "Cartwright? That wild old character who lives up in Lakewood a few miles north of Hartford?" Bill says "That's the one. Batty as they come and worth a lot of money". Johnny says "Yeah, you can say that again. That robbery I cleared up for him last winter. Bill, he insisted on giving me a small bonus for it, 3,000 bucks". Bill says "Wow!". Johnny says "Yeah. So, if Mr. Alvin Peabody Cartwright is calling for my services, I am ready, willing, and able". Bill says "Well, he is, Johnny. He says it's tremendously important that you contact him at once". Johnny says "All right, then I'll finish my packing and grab the plane". Bill says "No. He's out there on the coast. He has a little, or at least he calls it little, place right there in Beverly Hills at 10321 North Roxbury Drive". Johnny asks "Did he tell you what it's all about?" Bill says "Only that it's very important he sees you right away. When you consider how many attempts have been made on his life over the years...." Johnny says "Yeah, I know". Bill says "And Johnny, don't forget that Cartwright is a pretty important client of ours. If anything should happen to him...." Johnny says "I see what you mean. Okay, Bill. I'll be in touch".

Thursday Sep 04, 2025
Thursday Sep 04, 2025
Late one night in a cultivated field in the farm area of the county, Harry Trent and Slim Ferryman are stealing alfalfa from Mullin's farm. Trent asks "How many more bales we got to load, Slim?" He says "Oh, fifteen or twenty left, that's all". Trent says "Well, this will be the last truck load then". Slim says "Yeah, the sooner you get off the place with it, the better". Trent says "Mullen is sure going to be surprised when he gets a look at this field tomorrow". Slim asks "What do we get for this stuff?" Trent says "The market is about thirty dollars a ton. We'll clear almost two hundred dollars apiece. Not as much as we could make stealing livestock". Slim says "Sure, steal livestock and get sent to the pen. Maybe there ain't as much money in alfalfa, but it ain't marked either. Nobody can say it ain't yours once you get in the clear with it" Trent asks "Suppose Mullen suspects you had something to do with this?" Slim says "Me? His old army buddy? Not a chance. Besides, he saw me take a sleeping pill before we turned in tonight, at least he thinks he saw me take it. Give me the pitchfork. Now push these bales back away from the tailgate". Trent says "Slim, ssshh, I heard something moving over by the rack. Maybe it's Mullin, maybe he...." Slim says "Keep quiet". Mullin says "Who's out in this field? You better answer me. I can see the outline of your truck". Trent says "We better run for it". Slim says "No, he woke up. He must know I'm not in the house". Mullin asks "Who are you? Talk up, fast". Trent says "It's me Mullen, Harry Trent". Mullin asks "What's the matter, Trent? You lost or something? Your farm's on the other side of that fence. What are you doing in my field in the middle of the night with a truck full of my alfalfa?"

Mr. Keen, Tracer of Lost Persons - The Forgotten Cave Murder Case
Thursday Sep 04, 2025
Thursday Sep 04, 2025
In the dark, damp recesses of a cave located deep in an oceanside cliff on Long Island, Two men, Jim and Ed, are using small electric flashlights to find their way over the slippery rocks, going deeper inside the tomb-like cave. Ed says "Take it easy, Jim. These rocks are covered with slime". Jim says "Yeah, let's have another look at that map. Well, we can't be far from what we're after". Ed says "Look, the cave breaks into two passages right ahead of us, and the map doesn't say which one to take". Jim says "Well, maybe they come together again farther up. I tell you what, I'll take the left passage and you take the right. Ed says "No, listen, Jim, let's get out of here. I'm afraid. Jim says "Oh, forget it. We may be a hundred yards away from a million dollars, and I'm seeing it through. I'm going into this part of the cave on the left". Ed says "Jim, I'm going back. I'm not staying in this cave another half...". Suddenly, Ed hears Jim yell. Ed says "Jim! what happened? Did you fall? Oh! There's a knife in his back. He's dead!" Later, Ed goes to see Mr. Keen in his office. He says "I must see Mr. Keen right away". Mike Clancy says "Take it easy, young fellow. What's got you so excited? I'm Mike Clancy, Mr. Keen's partner". Ed says "Please let me see Mr. Keen immediately. Either I'm mad or there's been a murder". Mr. Keen says "I overheard what this young man said, Mike. Come in, will you? Let's hear about it". Ed says "My name is Ed Johnson, Mr. Keen. And I'll never rest until I find who murdered my friend, Jim Ramsey. And got away with his body, besides..." Mr. Keen asks "Got away with his body, Mr. Johnson? Well, that sounds strange. Are you sure your friend was murdered?" Ed says "Mr. Keen, the local police thought I was a crank. They wouldn't believe my story. That's why I came here".

Gang Busters - The Case of the Temperate Thief
Wednesday Sep 03, 2025
Wednesday Sep 03, 2025
In a tiny neighborhood cleaning and pressing shop in the Yorkville district of the city of New York, an attractive, but over-dressed blonde named Stella sat at the counter thumbing through the pages of a magazine. A few steps away, the proprietor of the store, George, labored at a pressing machine trying to finish up his day's work. Stella says "George...George!" He asks "What?" Stella asks "Finished yet?" George says "Not yet, soon". A few seconds later, Stella says "George". He says "For crying out loud, Stella. Will you let me get finished up?" Stella says "You don't seem to realize you got a wife that likes to go out and enjoy herself a little". George says "Go out enjoy yourself. Who cares? Just let me get finished up here, that's all". Stella says "George, give it up, will you? There's at least five or six mobs crying for a guy with your talent". George says "Now, let's not start that again, Stella". She says "Except, in any one of them, you can take over. In one deal you'd make more than you make pressing pants in two years". George says "Can't you get it through your head? There's no such thing as one deal. One deal leads to another and another, until I wake up one day and find myself hooked again. So let me live a little bit". Stella says "Live? You call this living? How long can you exist taking in 20 or 30 dollars a day, especially when you got to support your mother out of it and everything". George says "Look let's not start the arguments about my mother". Stella says "And what about your brother Sonny? Why doesn't he contribute a little bit to her support too?" George says "Don't ask me what Sonny does or what he doesn't do. I only know what I do". Stella says "With Sonny, the dough is rolling in. He's throwing it around like water and you're just struggling along. George, you got a reputation in the rackets. Talk to Sonny. He's always got some deal cooking".

Wednesday Sep 03, 2025
Wednesday Sep 03, 2025
It is dinnertime in the home of the John and Emma Fulton, who live near a small city in upstate New York. Emma is in the dining room waiting for her husband to come home from work. John walks in and says "Emma, sorry I'm late". Emma says "Oh, that's all right, the food is still hot. Here, let me take your coat. You look tired". John says "I am. These meetings every night are beginning to get me down. So, do you know what I've been thinking? Maybe we ought to get away for a little vacation when these meetings are over". Emma says "Oh, that sounds wonderful. Would this be another business trip?" John says "Oh, no, Emma, just the two of us". Emma says "Oh, wonderful". She suddenly remembers something and says "Oh my goodness". John asks "What's the matter?" Emma says "That man who called while you were out last night, you know, the Connecticut call". John says "Oh, Mr. Parker". Emma says "Yes, I forgot all about him. He came here about an hour ago and he's waiting for you in the den". John says "Parker, I can't seem to place him". Emma says "He said he's an old friend". John says "Well, I'll go see him. I'll be back in a minute". John walks into the den and says "Hello". Mr. Parker says "Hello, John. I'm Leonard Parker. Remember me?" John says "Well, I don't mean to be rude Mr. Parker, but, I'm afraid I don't". Parker says "And after all we went through". John says "Mr. Parker, you're obviously enjoying this, but I afraid I'll have to be getting back to my dinner". Parker says "Hey, wait a minute. You aren't very hospitable to an old bunk mate after 21 years". John says "Oh, I remember now". Parker says "You don't seem very happy to see me". John asks "Why did you come here?" Parker says "Take it easy, John, I didn't come here to blow any whistles". John says "I wouldn't if I were you. When I escaped from that road gang, you were with me, remember?"

The Epic Casebook - The Final Chapter
Wednesday Sep 03, 2025
Wednesday Sep 03, 2025
At the time when Sergeant Jackson found the body laying in the gutter, it appeared to be just a shabbily dressed corpse. Inspector Carr says "Shine your torch on him, will you Jackson? This is no tramp. Look at his hands and fingernails. Take us close enough to look at the face. Wait, I've seen this face before. Alright, let's take a look at the back of the head". To an experienced member of the Murder Squad, the lethal blow was an all too familiar sight. The matted hair, the trickle of blood staining the collar, but something was not familiar in an investigation of this sort. Despite the congealing blood and the gaping wound, Inspector Carr was astonished at the way the man's hair had been cut. It was much longer than was the prevailing fashion and it appeared as though the barber had exercised considerable care. Inspector Carr says "Look at the man's well-kept hands and manicured fingernails, despite having on an ill-fitting suit, cheap shoes, and shirt. Something doesn't gel, Jackson. It's almost as though he's in fancy dress". Jackson asks "An actor, do you think, sir?" Carr says "Could be. Alright, Jackson, get the police ambulance to take him over to the mortuary. I don't think we'll have much difficulty in identifying the body". However, Inspector Carr was not correct about the identification. There were no record of his fingerprints. Neither the shirt, nor suit helped him. The clothes had been mass-produced. Finally, it was decided to publish the man's picture. That produced immediate results.

Jeff Regan, Investigator - The Lawyer and the Lady
Sunday Aug 31, 2025
Sunday Aug 31, 2025
Regan is in Anthony J. Lyon's office. Lyon says "I have a check from our new client. His name's Kramer, and he's a big lawyer". Regan asks "Do we need one again?" Lyon says "He wants to see you". Regan asks "What about?" Lyon says "He'll tell you, then you can tell me. I want you to be nice to him. He's a big man. His office is in the Park Central Building. Abercrombie, Kramer, and Schmitt is the name of the office. It's an important legal firm in the city". Regan asks "What's the job?" Lyon says "I told you he'd give you all of it". Regan says "Look, the last time I waited for a client to talk, he died". Lyon says "Look here, the kind of dough he pays, you could do janitor work for him and not ask questions". Regan says "You never learn". Lyon says "This is a certified check. It came by special messenger. He's waiting for you now" Regan asks "What else?" Lyon says "The message said he wanted all this done confidentially. No police, you understand". Regan says "You'd kidnap your own mother for cash, and then you'd starve to death charging yourself ransom". Lyon says "I'm gonna be patient with you, Regan". He says "This is another rotten deal". Lyon says "These big legal outfits can't afford to be dishonest". Regan says "You've been making a living doing it". Lyon says "Kramer's got a legitimate practice, I checked. I assure you I pay your salary and I take things as I see them". Regan says "Well, you need stronger glasses".

Two years after his plane had permanently won the Schneider Cup Trophy for England, Reginald J. Mitchell seemed unable to interest himself in anything but his garden. The competition for the Schneider Cup officially ended in 1931, so there were no more races to win and no more record-breaking planes to build. Being an aircraft designer, R.J. Mitchell "Mitch" became tired and worn out by the constant battle he had fought to get his ideas and designs across to potential benefactors. Mitch's wife, Diana, and his best friend, Flight Commander Jeffrey Crisp, conspired to take Mitch on a holiday in Germany. While there, they visited the Richtofen Club in Berlin, and met Dr. Powell Messerschmitt. He asks "Have you enjoyed your stay in Germany?" Mitch says "Very much indeed, thank you. We've only been here a week, but we're looking forward to another five". Messerschmitt says "If I can help you to see anything special, Herr Mitchell..." Mitch says "Oh thanks. I have already visited one of your gliding clubs". Messerschmitt says "Gliders? Oh yeah, they have their uses. You think we make only gliders, but why?" Mitchell says "I don't want to be tactless, but..." Messerschmitt says "The Versailles treaty?" Mitch says "Well I suppose so, yes" Messerschmitt says "The Versailles treaty is dead. It is history, and like history, it is all over. What is important is what you do in the future. We are now preparing to make history. The Germans have had enough of being underdogs. Under Hitler, we shall be overlords". From that point, Mitch and Jeffrey knew they must forget about their holiday, and get back to England as soon as possible.

The Adventures of Sam Spade - The Dry Martini Caper
Sunday Aug 31, 2025
Sunday Aug 31, 2025
Gordon Martini, chairman of the board of the Martini Trading Company, had recently been the victim of an attempted kidnapping. He had received some injuries during the ordeal, and spent some time in the hospital. Upon leaving, he calls Sam Spade to meet him at his home located at 1000 Marina Boulevard. After Sam arrives, Martini decides that the best place to discuss his business with Sam would be in his limousine on his way to work. As they walk toward it, Martini sees his chauffeur appearing to be asleep in the back seat. He asks Sam "Can you drive a car?" Sam indicates that he can. Martini opens the car door and sees that the person is not his chauffeur, but a stranger with a gun. Shots are fired and Martini gets hit. As he goes down, Sam is under his 300lbs. of dead weight. By the time Sam rolled Martini off of him and got up, the gunman jumped out of the limousine and into a gray sedan that was double parked. Sam was only able to get part of the sedan's license plate. A crowd starts gathering around the scene. Soon, Gordon's wife Netta appears. She says "It's my fault. I called Ernie from our apartment window and asked him to come upstairs. I wanted him to return some lingerie that was the wrong color". Sam asks "Who's Ernie?" Netta says "He's our chauffeur. I was looking for the exchange slip when we heard the shots. Is he dead this time?" Sam says "Yeah, don't go to pieces". Netta says "Poor Gordon, he had so many enemies. He didn't drink well, you know, people dropped us like flies". Sam says "Well, they certainly dropped your husband".

The New Adventures of Nero Wolfe - The Malevolent Medic
Friday Aug 29, 2025
Friday Aug 29, 2025
Mr. Hal Horton of United Industries, pays a visit to Mr. Wolfe's office. Wolfe says "Well, I discouraged your visit here when you called earlier, Mr. Horton. However, I do have a sort of curiosity about the operation of so-called big business. May I offer you a glass of beer, and hear an explanation of the rise and fall of this morning's stock market?". Horton says "You don't think I've come here socially, do you? I wish to engage your services, but...." Wolfe says "Not available". Horton asks "You're a detective, aren't you?" Wolfe says "I specialize in cases that interest me". Horton says "I've just gotten here. I haven't told my story. I don't believe you even know who I am". Wolfe says "Oh, yes, we do. We do indeed. A millionaire". Horton asks "Did I offend you by speaking of a fee?" Wolfe says "No, on the contrary. It is that portion of your conversation which interested me most. Now, Mr. Horton, what have you done, sir?" Horton says "What have I done?" Wolfe says "One doesn't have to be a detective to recognize you're in trouble, Mr. Horton". He says "Look, Mr. Wolfe, I have done nothing. But, I've got a question that I've got to have answered. I need facts. They tell me you're the man who can give them to me". Archie says "If Nero Wolfe can't get them for you, they're not facts. They're fantasies, Mr. Horton". Horton says "My story's involved". Wolfe says "But the gist of it is, your beautiful wife, Leslie, a former model, died last week. The death certificate indicated a heart attack, but you are suggesting it was murder". Horton asks "How did you know?" Wolfe says "Never mind how I came to my conclusions, how did you come to yours?" Horton says "Leslie had been going to a doctor Benjamin Sloan. She'd been upset. He was giving her vitamin B shots, she told me". Wolfe says "You doubt that was true". Horton says "Dr. Sloan informed me after she died in his office, there'd been a heart condition from the beginning. Well, I don't believe it. Leslie was a very emotional girl. She'd have been quite frightened of a heart ailment. She would have told me about it." Wolfe says "Maybe she didn't comprehend its seriousness". Horton says "Dr. Sloan did".

Dan Holiday receives a letter in his Box 13 that reads "I need your help. I dare not go to the police for reasons I will explain when you see me. Please come to my office in the Security Building. Signed, Douglas McIntosh". Susie says "McIntosh, that's a Scottish name isn't it? Wonder what he wants?" Dan says "Well, if this man is the same Macintosh I looked up, he's building that new tunnel under the river". Susie says "Gee, maybe he wants you to be a hedgehog". Dan says "No Susie, they're called sandhogs. Well, I think I'll see what Mr. McIntosh has on his mind. I'll be at the Security Building, Susie". Dan arrived at the building and was shown into McIntosh's office. McIntosh says "So, you're the man, huh?" Dan says "I'm the man". McIntosh says "Alright, you call me Mac. What's your name Holiday?" He says "Call me Dan". Mac says "Alright, now Dan, I am in trouble". Dan says "Trouble gets around, fast. Mac says "Look here, I'll tell you quick. I'm a contractor. I bid on this new tunnel, got the bid, and posted my bond to finish the tunnel on time". Dan says "So far, everything's clear. What now?" Mac says "Then, I'm not going to finish in time". Dan asks "Well, why not?" Mac says "Now we get to the point, and a sharp point". Dan says "You say you're running into trouble?". Mac says "Aye, sabotage". Dan asks "Why don't you call the police?" Mac says "I can't man, it'd be publicity, unfavorable. I can't risk it". Dan asks "Oh, what's my problem?" Mac says "Find out who's doing this to me". Dan asks "You suspect someone of doing it?" Mac says "Oh look man, accidents like we've been having don't just happen. They're made to happen".

Hal Dixon and his partner, Fanny Lane, are in Havana and staying at Shannon's Hotel. Slate is out with Fanny, showing her the town, while Saylor is stuck in the Hotel Lobby with Dixon and his unfunny jokes. Four hours later, Saylor says "Well, roll out the carpet. Here comes Lover Boy now". Slate says "You should have come with us, Saylor. Fanny's a lot of girl. We had a ball". Dixon asks "Where's my partner Shannon? Slate says "She's in her room. I took her by way of the balcony. The moon shines brighter there. You don't mind, do you Dixon?" He says "No, no, not a bit. Maybe Fanny can build it into a lair for the act". Slate says "Hey look Dixon, all we did was look at the sights". The next morning, Dixon comes to Fanny's room. He says "Fanny. It's Hal, Fanny. Come on, open up". Fanny says "Okay, what do you want? Dixon says "Tell me something, honey. You like Havana? Sure you do". Fanny asks "What are you talking about?" Dixon says "The first time I saw you, I knew about you. You were with Tommy Carpa, and he's in the clink right here in Havana, because, well, you pull a bank job in the locality, you get caught, you get the clink in the locality. That's why you were so anxious to come to Havana, Fanny". She says "Listen to me, Hal..." Dixon says "I'm sure it was. The dough Tommy robbed never turned up. You know where it is because Tommy told you. All that dough for us. For you and me, baby". Fanny says "Take your hands off me. Now, get out of here. Get out". Dixon hits her, and says "No. You don't talk to me like that. Never like that". Dixon waits for a few seconds, and says "Fanny, get up, baby. You hit your head on that bad old pipe, Fanny, huh? Come on, come on, get up. Hey, hey, baby. You're not going to get up, are you? Never. Well, we'll just have to put you someplace, baby. An alley? Sure. An alley. You went out with a guy named Shannon last night and you never got home. Shannon left you in an alley".

Pursuit - Pursuit on the Night Ferry
Thursday Aug 28, 2025
Thursday Aug 28, 2025
Scotland Yard had received word from an informer that the Night Ferry Express Train was to be held up on its run. At what time and exactly where was not known. So, Inspector Peter Black, his assistant Moffatt, Railroad Inspector George Hobson, as well as ten other men were making the journey in the hope of intercepting any attack. They had boarded the Night Ferry Express at 9:00 PM from the Victoria Station. There would be no halts until Dover, at which point the train would be run aboard the ferry and transported across the English Channel to Dunkirk. From there it would continue through to Paris. Trouble was expected somewhere between their present point and the final destination. After listening to some French passengers complaining about the food in the dining car, Hobson says "What's the time, Black?" Black says "It is 10 o'clock". Hobson says "I wouldn't mind a bite to eat myself". Black says "You'll have to wait until Dover for that. It's only 40 minutes". Hobson says "Well, if something's going to happen, I hope it's before the channel". Black asks "Do you get seasick, Hobson?" He says "Violently, don't talk about it". Black says "I won't. Look, hang on here will you? I'm going to see how Moffatt's getting on". After a few seconds, Moffett says "Hello, Sir". Black asks "Everything quiet, Moffatt?" He says "Nothing doing up here, Sir". Black says "Right. Well unless they're planning to stop the train when we get over to France, I don't think that I...." Moffatt says "Look out, there's a light up ahead. Something is on the rails, I think". Black says "Alright, you jump for it the second the train stops, Moffatt, and have your gun ready".

John Somersham and his wife Gwen are sound asleep at their home. Suddenly, Gwen says "John, wake up. Someone's at the door". John says "What...what is it?" Gwen says "John I'm frightened. There's someone at the front door". John asks "What's the time? It's 17 minutes past 2 the middle of the night". Gwen says "Someone's knocking at the front door, listen" After a few seconds of silence, Gwen says "There was someone, John. It woke me up". John says "You imagined it. Now, I'd like to get some sleep". The doorbell starts ringing. John says "I hear it. Who can it be at this time of night". Gwen asks "What are you going to do?" John says "I'm going to see who it is. What do you think you're doing?" Gwen says "I'm coming with you". John says "You're not. You're staying there. If there's any trouble, lock yourself in the bedroom and phone for the police". John goes to the front door and asks "Who's there?" A voice on the other side of the door says "Police". John says "Police, just a moment". Gwen, who followed him to the door says "There's been an accident, I know it". As he opens the door, John says "I told you to stay up there, Gwen". Two men are at the front door. One of them says "Mr. John Somersham?" John says "Yes, that's me. What is it?" The man says "We're police officers, sir, can we come in?" John asks "Why?" He says "It's a bad news I'm afraid. It's about your son". Gwen says "About our son? Why?" John says "Don't get excited, Gwen, they've obviously come to the wrong address. Our son is fast asleep upstairs. Officer asks "You're quite sure he's upstairs?" John says "Quite sure". John says "Gwen, will you look in Simon's room?" She goes into his room and finds it empty. John looks at the officer and says "What is your name?" The officer says "Garwood, sir". John says "What has happened to our son?" Garwood says "He's safe and he's well and if you do exactly what we say you'll have him back again tomorrow". John says "You're not police officers, are you?"

Dutch Schneider, owner of the Belvedere Club, is sitting behind his mahogany desk when his intercom light starts flashing on and off with the appropriate sound effects. He answers it and asks "O'Neill, what's going on out there?" O'Neill says "Just what you think, Dutch. It's a raid. Dutch asks "Are they doing any damage?" O'Neill says "Can't you hear it?" Dutch says "No". O'Neill says "Take my word for it, they're playing awful rough". Dutch says "I'm glad they're having fun. Who's in charge?" Just then, a police officer walks into Dutch's office and says "I am, Mr. Schneider". Dutch says "Never mind, O'Neill". The officer asks "Did you want to see me?" Dutch say "Yes, officer. What is your name?" Officer says "Brooks, Lieutenant Sidney Brooks". Dutch asks "Why wasn't I notified of this raid? Your boys must have done at least a hundred thousand dollars worth of damage". Brooks says "Oh, easy". Dutch asks "Do you know who's going to pay for it? You". Brooks says "On my salary? Don't be silly". Dutch turns on the intercom and says "O'Neill, get me Arthur Hall on the phone". Brooks says "Oh now I get it. Is Arthur Hall your lawyer?" Dutch says "That's right". Brooks says "This is the funniest thing I've heard yet. So, he clipped you too, huh? I'm surprised at you Dutch". Dutch asks "What are you talking about?" Brooks says "I'll bet Arthur sold you a bill of goods that he could keep us out of your hair if you paid off to him". Dutch says "Well". Brooks says "Well, he was kidding you. Arthur Hall has as much influence in Chicago as my brother-in-law, and even with me on the force he can't get himself arrested".

Whitney Kent, jet pilot and war hero, was pleased to be back, standing in the sunlight with the sight, sound, and smell of aircraft all around. He could see the lean lethal lines of the F-92k, Kent Aircraft's jet fighter beside me. He could also see the lean lovely lines of Sue Pearson, Kent Aircraft secretary, that is, his father's secretary, and he is Kent Aircraft. As the pilot Hank Jordan lit the torch and the twin jets build up, Sue Pearson turned to Whitney and asks "What are you going to do now that you're back, Whitney?" He says "I've made a resolution to get to know some of the people who work here better, you know, see as much of them as possible". Sue says "Lose that look in your eyes when you say that, Whitney. You make me feel like a bargain in the slave market". Whitney asks "What's going on here this morning? Is this is a test flight?" Sue says "In a way. He's moving. He's off the ground. There he goes". Whitney says "You sound awfully tense, Sue, for a routine test flight". Sue says "It's not a routine job. Where have you been the last six months, Whitney? Haven't you been reading the papers?" Whitney says "I've been too busy selling that fighter, remember? I come home with orders for the factory's entire output for the next two years. Not bad effort, huh?" Sue says "Not bad, just wasted". Whitney says "What?" Sue says "Didn't you know that all F-92ks have been grounded for the last six months". Whitney says "Grounded?" Sue asks "Didn't your father tell you? The air force took delivery of a dozen. Five crashed in one week. Five men were killed". Whitney asks "What went wrong with them?" Sue says "No one knows".

On a little farm in the Great Central Valley of Oregon, Mrs. Slater is busily preparing her son, Dale, for a journey. She says "There now, there's socks, shirts, and toothbrush. That's about everything". Dale says "Thank you, Mother. I sure was nice of you to get me those things brand new". She says "Well, you'll want good durable clothes when you get to Los Angeles. Dale says "It's getting late. I've got to get started". Mrs. Slater says "Now, wait a minute, I almost forgot, these have to go in the bag". Dale says "Blankets? Now what the devil do I need with blankets in Los Angeles?" She says "Well, you never can tell what the weather will be Dale and I don't want you to catch a cold. Now, don't you believe all you read about the warm sun and the palm trees. I hear the nights down there can be downright chilly. There you are, now you are all packed". Dale says "Alright, I've got to get going". She says "Well, goodbye son". Dale says "Goodbye Mother, I'll send for you just as soon as I can get a job". She says "And don't you forget to write to me every day". Dale says "I won't. Goodbye". She says "Goodbye son". Dale Slater, Carpenter's helper, sets out for a new life in the Southland. True to his promise, he writes his mother every day. On June 15th, 1931, Dale's letter reads "The job opportunities in Los Angeles are scarce, but I am going to Boulder City on June 16th. with a man who knows several of the foremen there. He says that he can get jobs for both of us". That was the last letter Mrs. Slater received.

As Kenneth McCormick, reporter for the Detroit Free Press Newspaper, is looking at a violent murder scene in the living room of a bungalow in the suburbs of Highland Park, Captain Walsh, Highland Park Detective, enters the room and introduces himself. Walsh says "You're the guy that got the Pulitzer Prize a few years ago". McCormick says "Oh, you have a good memory Captain. What's the dead man's name?" Walsh says "George F. Redway, age 69, worked in The Candy Factory" McCormick says "Looks like he took quite a beating. What did he die of?" Walsh says "Broken ribs, probably punctured his lungs. Death occurred around midnight last night, and was reported early this morning. Anything else you want to know?" McCormick says "Well, I'd like to get an interview with his family". Walsh says "You can't, he hasn't got any. One of the neighbors found his body". McCormick says "I see. What do you think the motive was? Robbery?" Walsh says "What else? Look at the joint". McCormick says "Someone sure took it apart, but this bungalow, Captain, the furnishings, the way it's kept. What I mean is, it doesn't look like the old guy had much to be robbed of". Walsh says "Somebody must have thought he had". McCormick asks "What about all these muddy tracks on the floor?" Walsh says "Who knows. Anyone could have made them, even Redway himself. Ah, I hate this kind of case". McCormick says "You know why? Because the motive is too broad, too impersonal. Any one of five thousand bums or hoodlums could have bust in, beaten up the occupant, ransacked the joint, and cleared out."

Theater Five - The Fix
Saturday Aug 23, 2025
Saturday Aug 23, 2025
A desperate young man that calls himself "Duke" is hiding outside Doctor Rand's office, trying to avoid a police officer, and waiting for the last patient to leave, so that he can visit the doctor. When the officer was near the corner, the light in the Doctor's office went. Duke knew it was time to make his move. He runs across the street and meets the doctor at the office door. He says "Doctor Rand? I'd like to see you for a couple of minutes and talk to you". Doctor Rand says "I don't believe I know you, do I?" Duke says "No". Doctor says "Well, of course that's not important, but it's very late and I was...." Duke says "I know, Doc, but it's an emergency. If I can't talk to you, I don't know what I'll do. I swear I don't." Doctor says "Oh, all right. Come on in. Let me get the lights. In here, into my office. Now, what seems to be the trouble?" Duke says "Doc, I need a fix. I'm not kidding around. I'm giving it to you straight. I'm on the stuff and need help, you dig?". Doctor says "Yes, I think so, but what on Earth brought you here to me?" Duke says "I was just taking a chance, Doc, but I had to do it. You see, I lost my connection. They picked him up a couple of days ago, and I haven't able to score, get what I need since". Doctor says "But I still don't understand". Duke says "I told you. I took a chance. I live near here and you're the only Doc around here at night. I waited until I saw your light go out. That meant that there was no one else here with you". Doctor says "I see, and I'm sorry because I'm afraid you've made a mistake. You see, I'm not that kind of a doctor. I'm a psychiatrist".
