Suspense - Night on Red Mountain
Friday Aug 22, 2025
Friday Aug 22, 2025
A man named Battalia pulls his car into a service station named Walt's Summit Service, about 32 miles south of Victorville, California. He stops his car near the gas pumps, and honks his horn. Walt Parsons, owner, says "I'm sorry, sir. I didn't hear you drive in. You can't hear much of anything when the wind starts blowing". Battalia says "Fill her up. You better check the oil and water, too. You got any hot coffee inside?" Walt says "Yeah, hot and black". Battalia says "That's for me. Must be close to zero". Walt says "It's not that bad, It's down to around 20 degrees, but it will drop tonight though. Radio says we might get a blizzard". Battalia says "And they call this sunny California". Walt says "Well, we're more than 5,000 feet here. It's 6,500 feet at the top of the pass, up the road a piece". Battalia says "Yeah, I know. I just came over it". Walt asks "You heading north?" Battalia says "Yeah, Vegas. How far is it from here?" Walt says "It's 260 miles from Victorville, and Victorville is 32 miles from here. What's the matter? Are you lost?" Battalia asks "What makes you think so?" Walt says US Highway 66 is a direct route. Not many cars come across Red Mountain in the winter". Battalia asks "Say, ain't I seen you someplace before?" Walt says "No, not unless you've been through here before". Battalia says "Ain't never. You come from back east?" Walt says "Never been. I come from up north, Yreka". Battalia says "Funny. If you'd take that mustache off, you'd be a ringer for a kid I once knew back in Jersey City named Joey Perino. Funny. Yeah, look-alikes. You run into them sometime". Walt says "Sure". Battalia says "Without that mustache, I'd swear you would be..." Walt says "Mistaken". Battalia says "Yeah. Well, um, where do I find the coffee?" Walt says "Right inside. Sally will take care of you".

Mr. Richard Wilson arrives at Dr. Morelle's office for his scheduled appointment. Miss Frayle says "This is Mr. Wilson, Dr. Morelle". Morelle says "Good morning". Wilson says "Good morning, doctor". Morelle says "Thank you, Miss Frayle. Sit down, Mr. Wilson" Wilson says "Thank you. It's very good of you to see me so quickly". Morelle says "You have my assistant, Miss Frayle, to thank". Wilson says "It was her I spoke to yesterday on the phone and made the appointment". Morelle says "A somewhat impressionable young woman, inclined to be influenced by an appeal to the emotions". Wilson says "Well, I did make it sound rather urgent". Morelle says "A matter of life and death was Miss Frayle's description. You see, it was upon her insistence that it was a case of such urgency that I agreed to see you". Wilson says "I'm very grateful to Miss Frayle. If I did sound so worked up, well, it could be a matter of life and death". Morelle asks "For whom, Mr. Wilson? For you?" Wilson says "No, Dr. Morelle. It's my mother. I'm afraid that I'm going to murder her". Morelle says "Try to relax, Mr. Wilson. Let me reassure you that it isn't altogether unusual for children to wish their parents dead and sometimes to the extent that they become horrified that they may transform the thought into action". Wilson says "I'm not a child, Dr. Morelle". He says "Quite, there are few adults who are not inhibited by some hangover of childhood influences".

Randy has the night off and a date with the little blonde at the information desk. He talked her into going dancing with him, and is supposed to pick her up at 9:00 PM. It was currently 8:30 PM and he is still trying to find a flower shop to buy her a corsage for the evening. He walked to the edge of skid row, and finally found a florist shop in the center of a shabby office building. Randy looks through the window and sees a grey-haired old lady pinning a boutonnière on the lapel of a chunky fellow in a shiny blue serge suit. As Randy came through the door, the fellow spun around like he was expecting the worst. The grey-haired lady says "Will you hold still so I can get this flower in place?" The chunky fellow says "I'm sorry Mrs. Donleven, I'm expecting somebody and I thought maybe this fellow might be the one". Mrs. Donleven says "Alright, now you just stay quiet. I'll be with you in a moment, sir". Randy says "Alright, there's no hurry. No hurry at all there". Mrs. Donleven says "Now, isn't that beautiful. My husband set it aside especially for you". The chunky fellow says "Tell your husband thanks. No matter how punk I feel, if I get a fresh flower in my lapel, that picks me up better than a shot of raw gin. How much do I owe you?" She says "Fifty cents". While handing her the coins, he accidentally drops them. She says "Oh, I'll pick it up. You seem upset tonight. This person you're going to meet must be quite important". He says "Yeah, sure is. He's the man who's going to put me out of my misery. Tell your husband next time I need a flower, he better make it a nice white lily".

The Mysterious Traveler - I Won't Die Alone
Thursday Aug 21, 2025
Thursday Aug 21, 2025
Two young men are speeding along in a car on a lonely West Virginia road at 70 miles per hour. There's a tense look on the face of the driver, Steven Martin, as he takes the curves on the road without slowing down. His companion, Chuck Williams, nervously wipes the perspiration from his face. He turns and watches the road behind fearfully now and then, glancing at Steve for reassurance. Steven says "Turn on the radio, Chuck. Let's see if they got an alarm out yet". Chuck says "Yeah. Okay. What do you think our chances are Steve?" He says "Hard to say. It all depends on how fast the cops spread the word". On the radio, Steve and Chuck hear "The two men robbed the Third National Bank of Lewisburg of over a quarter of a million dollars shortly before closing time. Word has just been received that the two bank robbers are now driving east on Highway 6B towards the Allegany Mountains. Steve says "That's not good". The radio announcement continues "State Police Car 9, take up position at junction of Highway 11A and River Road. State Police Car 10, take up position at junction of Highway 3 and Highway 6B. That is all. Stand by for further orders". Chuck says "Steve, Highway 6B, we're on it. You got to turn back. We're headed for a trap". Steve says "Take it easy, will you? There's still a chance. Twenty miles ahead, there's a small dirt road that'll detour us right around them". Chuck says "Twenty miles? We'll never make it. Isn't there any other road we can turn off on?" Steve says "No, I was born in these parts. I know every inch of the country". Chuck says "Steve, let's ditch the car and cut toward the mountains on foot". Steve says "Are you crazy? It's 40 miles to the mountains. We'd never make it walking. We've got to keep driving. It's our only chance".

Detective Sergeants Joe Friday and Ben Romero were working the night watch out of the Los Angeles Police Homicide Division. At 5:35 PM, they got out of their car and walked toward the scene of the crime, The Loupos Cafe. One or more persons shot up the cafe using a machine gun. Romero says "Look at that, Joe. Took out the whole front of the place". As they walked inside, another officer was there named Shelton, from the Hollywood Division. Shelton says "My partner Taylor and I picked up the call in our car. Nobody was hurt". Romero asks "What's the story?" Just then, Captain Elliot appears at the scene. Elliot looks at the damage, and says "Not much of it left". Friday says "Shelton here was in the cruiser, he can fill us in". Shelton says "The intended victim was Gus Valentine. He's over there with Taylor, my partner. According to Valentine, he stopped in the restaurant here for a drink. He was in there about 15 minutes, came out to hail a cab, and this car came around the corner, from down there, Sunset and Clayton. They whipped by close to the curb and opened up". Elliot says "There's a laundry there on one side of the place and a dry cleaning joint on the other side". Shelton says "Yes sir, it's a miracle, but nobody was hit". Friday asks "Did you get anything on the car?" Shelton says "Nothing, so far. It happened so fast, nobody got a good look at it". Romero asks "How about Valentine? Does he have any ideas?" Shelton says "I don't know. Taylor's getting the information". Elliot asks "Did anyone see anything? Any witnesses?" Shelton says "Yes sir, a couple, a newsboy, Tim Benson, and a lady in the dry cleaning place, Agnes Rebar. Neither of them got a license number".

Wednesday Aug 20, 2025

It was 10:00 PM when Detective Sergeants Friday, Romero, and Captain Elliot walked out of the murder room at the Ferndale Sanitarium and went down to the end of the hall, the emergency room. A doctor and a nurse were attending to Miss Stallings, who was present in the room when Valentine was shot. The doctor asks "Where are the bullets that were removed from Miss Stallings?" The nurse says "Right on this table, doctor". The doctor says "There they are, Captain Elliott". Elliot says "Thank you. Romero, you want to mark them for evidence?" Romero says "All right". Friday says "Doctor, I wonder if it'd be all right if we asked Miss Stallings a few questions". Doctor says "I think so. She's still in a bad state of shock, if you'll be as brief as possible. Miss Stallings, these men are police officers. This is Captain Elliott, this is Sergeant Friday, am I right?" Friday says "That's right, this is my partner, Sergeant Romero. You were in the room when Gus Valentine was shot?" Miss Stallings says "Yes, I saw it". Elliot asks "Did you get a look at the men that did the shooting?" She says "I don't remember". Elliot asks "Can you describe them?" She says "I don't know". Elliot asks "Are you sure you're feeling up to talking now?" She says "I don't know". Romero asks "Do you have any idea who the men were?" She says "No". Romero says "Maybe we can talk to you later". Miss Stallings says "I don't care what you do!, do you hear me?" The doctor says "She has nervous shock". Romero says "We didn't mean to upset her". Doctor says "You didn't. I thought maybe she might be able to help you a little, but I guess not. Better make it sometime tomorrow morning. She'll be all right then".

Dangerous Assignment - Memory Chain Equation
Tuesday Aug 19, 2025
Tuesday Aug 19, 2025
Steve walks into the Commissioner's office. Ruth says "Well, here he is Commissioner. I have your plane ticket at my desk when you're ready, Steve" Steve says "Okay, Ruth. Well, where am I going this time, Commissioner?" He says "To Munich. Your plane leaves in one hour. You'll be looking for the memory chain". Steve asks "Memory chain? I hope it is no relation to the daisy chain". Commissioner says "Seriously, Steve, this is the toughest proposition we've ever been up against. it's a skillfully organized pipeline through which vital information has been leaking out of this country to Eastern Europe. There are no documents involved. It's all done by a system of runners. Each runner memorizes the information and passes it on to the next one by word of mouth and right now a vital chemical equation is somewhere along that pipeline". Steve asks "Any idea how far along the chain it is by now?" Commissioner says "Yes, we caught up with the first runner in Lisbon, but two days too late. He'd already passed the message on. We then traced runner number two to Paris, but we were six hours too late there". Steve says "It sounds like we're running a poor second all along the line". Commissioner says "Yes and I'm sending you over there to come in first for a change. We now have reason to believe that the next transfer point is Munich and we have a tip that a woman named Eva Schaefer may be one of the runners. One of our agents is in Munich now, Kurt Allison. Steve get over there, work with him, and do anything you need to keep that equation from getting through. You've got your assignment. Good luck.

He picks up the deck, turns to the tall blonde-haired young man on his left, and asks "How many, Summers?" He says "I'll take two". Bannister says "Two it is". He turns to the next player and asks "Cress, how many?" Cress says "I'll play these". Banister says "Pat hand, huh? How about you, Freytag?" Freytag says "I have to think about this". Suddenly, the poker players hear a knock at the door. Banister asks "Yes, who is it?" Someone from the hall answers "Bellboy". Banister says "Alright, come in. Well, Freytag, made up your mind?" Freytag says "Yeah, I think I take one card". Banister says "Alright, there you are. Now you, son, you can put the beer down. What....say, you're not a bellboy". He says "What do you know, I guess I'm not". Cress says "Look, he's got a gun". The gunman says "That's right, Bright Eyes. Now, everybody sit tight, except Fatso. You, Fatso, get up, walk over to the wall, and face it. That's right. We do this one at a time. Now you, Blondie". Summers gets up and goes to the wall. Gunman says "Now you, Bright Eyes". Cress says "Okay, only be careful with that gun". Gunman says "Yeah sure. Well, Baldy, that leaves you. Come on get moving". Freytag says "Alright, only first I do this!" Freytag tries to attack the gunman, but gets himself knocked out. Gunman says "Alright, hold it fellows. Stay right where you are. Baldy made a little mistake that's all. He's sleeping it off. I better clear up this table so you fellows can have some more room". Gunman grabs all the money and says "Alright, fellows, now you can get back to your game. Only, I think this time it's going to be penny ante".

A few minutes later, Chuck and Carole reach the studio. Chuck pulls his car into the into a loading zone to let Carol out. He suddenly sees Pappy Mansfield, owner of the radio station, coming out of the building, looking concerned. Pappy says "Hey Chuck, wait a minute". Chuck says "Hi Pappy, what's wrong?" Pappy says "Get out to North Hollywood as fast as you can. There's been a murder. Police Lieutenant Bill Meggs is positive it's your mystery criminal". Pappy gave them the address to a two-story house on Cling Street. It was late afternoon when Chuck and Carole arrived. There were two squad cars in front of the house. The officer on guard at the front door waved them inside. They went up a flight of stairs and found Lieutenant Meggs in a room at the end of the hall. Meggs says "Hi Chuck, Hello Carole. Thought you two would be along soon". Chuck says "It's finally happened". Meggs says "Yep. This one's as bad as the others". Chuck asks "Well, what makes you so sure it's the work of the mystery criminal?" Meggs says "Same deal. No clues, nothing to go on". Chuck asks "Any fingerprints?" Meggs says "None at all".

He says "Thank you". Danny says "What's on your mind?" Dean says "I'm 46 years old, Mr. Clover. I live at 903 Hillcrest Road in Queens. Once, when I was six and a half, I stole a peppermint stick. I got caught. Well, I mean, I gave myself up to my mother". Danny says "Go on, Mr. Dean". He says "I wanted to draw a parallel. Two days ago, I stole 20,000 dollars". Danny asks "And you're giving yourself up to me?" Dean says "Well, it was for my wife. You understand that, don't you?" Danny says "Just that you stole 20,000. That's all". Dean says "Well, here's my wife, Marcia's photograph. She's going on 43 now. Not very attractive anymore. I know that. She looks like what she is, after 20 years of me, a bank teller". Danny asks "You stole the money from the bank?" Dean says "Well, I stole 20,000 from the Charles Street National Bank where I worked because I was told I could have Marcia back for that amount of money". Danny asks "Are you trying to tell me that Marcia was kidnapped?" Dean says "Yeah, don't you see?" Danny says "All right. Go on". Dean says "Well, about nine o'clock yesterday, I got a phone call. A man said Marcia wouldn't be hurt if I took the money to that summer resort, Far Rockaway, register at the Idlewild Arms, put the money in the bottom bureau drawer, and leave. I did it, but they lied to me. Marcia hasn't come home. They've done something to her". Danny says "Tartaglia, Nothing to the newspapers about this. I'll get this picture of Mrs. Dean on the wires and then go up to Far Rockaway". Tartaglia says "Okay, Danny". Dean asks "What happens to me, Mr. Clover?" Danny says "Just what you expected, you go to jail".

You know out on the edge of town". Sheriff says "Yes, I know. What's the matter?" Jed says "Well, I stopped in here a while back to deliver the Parsons their milk, like I always do, and when I got here I found his wife Laura tied up to a chair. I asked her what had happened. She couldn't talk much, but she said something about a man killing her husband and tying her up. I looked for him and sure enough, I found him. Mr. Parsons is dead. He was shot through the head. You better get out here right away!" Sheriff says "Mr. Parsons has been murdered?" Jed says "Yeah sheriff, and Laura Parsons is in pretty bad shape. You better hurry up!" Sheriff says "Alright, Jed, I'll be right over soon as I can. Now, don't touch a thing and don't let nobody else touch anything". Jed says "I won't". Nick wakes up and says "Hey, what's all that about Walt?" Sheriff says "Oh, I woke you up didn't I? I'm sorry. Well, to be honest, I ain't sorry because I had to wake you up, anyhow". Nick says "So early in the morning? It can't be more than 6:00 o'clock". Sheriff says "It's a quarter to 6:00, but murderers don't care what time it is". Nick says "Murderer? Don't tell me somebody killed somebody way up here in the country?" Sheriff says "Yes, darn it. It's the first time in my sixteen years of being Sheriff, I ever had a murder in this county. I'm sure glad you're here, Nick".

What did you have in mind?" Mrs. Mollison says "A luggage shop, Mr. Hale, smart and expensive". Dave says "Yes. What is your address Mrs. Mollison?" She says "Twenty one, Courtney Road. Previously, I was thinking of a smart shop with dresses, suits, coats, and accessories. i had a shop of that kind in Seattle". Dave says "Yes, I had that impression when you came in. That seemed to be more your style than luggage". Mrs. Mollison says "I'd take that as a compliment, Mr. Hale. Oh, have you the time?" Dave says "It's 11:45". Mrs. Mollison says "Oh dear, I'll be late for my next appointment. Could we meet again Mr. Hale? He says "Why, it would be a pleasure, Mrs. Mollison". She says "May I telephone you in the next day or so? He says "Anytime, Mrs. Mollison". After she leaves, Dave says "Oh, Mrs. Mollison". He phones his secretary and says "Miss Sherman, the lady who just left my office...oh, gone so quickly. That's too bad, she left her handbag on my desk". Dave says "I know it seems odd, Captain Scott, but open the handbag". Scott opens it and says "Oh, I see". Dave says "She didn't come back right away, so I opened it to look for her address, and that's what I found". Scott says "A .25 caliber automatic".

Lorenz says "I'm calling long distance, my friend. Words are expensive". Connors says "Okay, Lorenz". Lorenz says "Do you have a pencil handy? Take this down. It's a grey convertible, 1953 model. New York license plate 24S373. You can learn the name of the owner from the motor vehicle bureau or whatever it's called in New York City". Connors says "Yeah, that'll be easy". Lorenz says "You'll find our prize in the left front wheel. Understand?" Connor says "The left front wheel, okay". Lorenz says "Car should be in New York within the next 48 hours, a young couple driving. They went through customs here at the border two days ago". Connors asks "No trouble?" Lorenz says "Why should there be trouble? They seemed like such respectable people". A couple of days later, Jerry and Pam North arrive home from their three week vacation. While they are getting the luggage out of their car, a man walks up to them and says his name is Connors, and he is a new tenant in their apartment building. He says he is getting acquainted with the neighborhood. Connors says "I'm from out of town, you know, and I can't get used to this New York parking situation. Where do you park your car?" Pam says "Well, Jerry usually keeps ours on that street behind the building". Jerry says "There's usually a space or two there. Connors says "Oh, that's good to know. Thanks, Mr. North". Lydia Laverton is speaking with her uncle the 10th Baron Elderly. He says "Well, I don't know. Yeah, I suppose we'll have to do something". Lydia says "You should sell out, Uncle, that's what". Baron says "Sell the estate? You can't be serious?" Lydia says "Of course I'm serious. You could get a couple of hundred thousand for this place, and live in comfort for the rest of your life". Baron says "Live in comfort? What's that got to do with it? We're talking about the Elderly Estate. This land's been in my family for three hundred years". Lydia says "Yes, it's beginning to look like it, Uncle, a run down, scruffy old place. Baron says "Of course, it's run down. It's difficult keep up like we did in the old days. Heaven knows I'm doing what I can to make ends meet". Lydia says "But it isn't enough is it?". Baron says "What do you expect me to do? I opened the castle to tourists who tramp in and out five days a week for three a head". Lydia says "Oh, I know you don't like having the public crawling all over the place". Baron says "It's better than your other suggestion, selling the estate. No, I can't do that. Never do that" Lydia says "No, instead you'll run yourself broke trying to make ends meet, then you'll die and the estate will have to be sold to pay debts". Baron says "Don't say that. No, the place will never be sold, never". Lydia asks "Alright then, what are you going to do?" Baron says "I suppose I could put a soda fountain in the stables". Lydia says "It wouldn't make any difference to the tourist trade". Baron says "Can you think of anything?" Lydia says "I was turning over one idea in my mind, it's a little unorthodox, but it might work". Baron says "Oh, don't just stand there girl. Let's have it".

Frank says "We're losing altitude, we'll be on the ground shortly". Mark says "I hope the weather is nicer down there than it is up here. It's been a very bumpy ride. Why did we have to come to this place, anyhow?" Frank says "To see if we can persuade an embezzler to part with 300,000 dollars in exchange for his freedom". Mark says "300 G's? So why didn't they just get in touch with the cops down here and have them latch on to the guy?" Frank says "The company figures he might give up the money if I can convince him of the error of his ways, and promise that no charges will be pressed". Mark asks "Look, who is the guy? What makes them so sure he's down here?" Frank says "His name is David Bellamy, and he's a passenger on the S.S. Kermit bound for Peru. According to the timetable, the Kermit figures to be in port at Kalan, waiting to go through the locks to the Pacific". Mark asks "You know anything about this Bellamy character?" Frank says "Yes. He used to be a radio actor and a master of dialects. Then he got in trouble and spent some time in prison. While he was there, he learned accounting". Mark says "Brother, must have learned plenty to be able to juggle 300 grand. Hey look, if he learned accounting while he was locked up, what did they lock him up for in the first place?" Wednesday Aug 13, 2025
Wednesday Aug 13, 2025
Comrade Revchinco has party work for Matt Cvetic. Revchinco says "Comrade Cvetic, you know of course about the organization known as the American Rally for Peace and Tolerance". Cvetic says "The ARPT, yes, something for us to infiltrate I take it". Revchinco says "My dear Cvetic, do you pretend not to know that the ARPT has been a Communist front for five years?" Cvetic says "I'm not pretending anything, I just didn't know it". Revchinco says "Strange, the FBI knows it". Cvetic says "The FBI?" Revchinco says "At least, the ARPT is suspected of being a party front". Cvetic says "Well, that's something else then. Nothing I can do about it, is there?" Revchinco says "You will think of something to re-establish confidence in the American Rally for Peace and Tolerance before it's too late". Cvetic says "That's a pretty big order, coming cold like this". Revchinco says "Two hundred and eighty local members of ARPT will cooperate in any workable plan to, whitewash them". Cvetic says "Hasn't the Kremlin a plan? Why are we the patsy?" Revchinco says "Five o'clock comrade Cvetic". He asks "What about five o'clock?" Revchinco says "I will be waiting here for you to discuss your plan". Cvetic, steaming, left the meeting quietly. He goes out to find a good, safe pay station and telephones his FBI contact. A meeting is set up at a little cafe. Cvetic tells his contact about ARPT and his assignment. The contact says "We always wanted to be dead sure that the ARPT was really a red front. We are sure now, thanks to you. That's a big service. Now as to your assignment, do you have any ideas for Revchinco at five o'clock?" Matt says "Blank. Nothing".

Wednesday Aug 13, 2025
Wednesday Aug 13, 2025
A racket boss, Ricky, is waiting for one of his soldiers, Harry, to report on Peter White. When Harry appears, Ricky says "I've been waiting for you, Harry, come on in. What is going on?" Harry says "Boss, that extortion we got with Peter White is off". Ricky says "I'm listening". Harry says "He's hot as a two bit pistol. I just trailed the guy, White, like you told me to. So, there I am trailing him and where do you think he goes?" Ricky says "How would I know?" Harry says "He goes right to the office of Philo Vance". Ricky says "Philo Vance the private investigator?" Harry says "Well, there couldn't be two guys with that name, and Vance is one guy I don't want to mess with. He's too smart for us, you know that". Ricky says "Sure he's smart, Harry, but I've had this racket plan for too long to let any one guy spoil it. We're going through with it, Vance or no Vance". Harry says "Well, if this guy white has hired Vance, you still think you can put the heat on him?" Ricky says "That's right. That's what I think". Harry says "Oh, but Boss, we're putting our head in a sling, we can't grab Peter White with Vance around". Ricky says "That's just the point, Harry. You and I will see that Vance isn't around".

Counterspy - The Case of the Insidious Impersonation
Tuesday Aug 12, 2025
Tuesday Aug 12, 2025
Counterspy Agent David Harding is receiving a message from Agent Ferguson in Washington. Ferguson says "Urgent, reference Confidential File R33X". Harding says "Go ahead, Ferguson". Ferguson says "The State Department requests that you personally meet the ocean liner S.S. Tregania, which is scheduled to arrive at 10:00 A.M. in New York, Pier 33". Harding says "All right Ferguson, notify the party's concerned that I'll board the Tregania at the Ambrose lighthouse". Ferguson says "Yes sir, will do". Harding then makes another call to Agent Peters. He says "Peters, notify Spalding that I'm putting him in charge of our present operation here on the west coast until you and I get back. Now, after you talk to Spaulding, call the airport and order the jet to be ready for a take-off within an hour. We're making an emergency flight to New York, Peters. I'll give you the details on the way". Later, while on the flight, Peters asks "Well, Mr. Harding, how about those details?" Harding says "Peters, we are flying to New York in regards to Confidential File R33X. That's the code number for a special mission to Washington by Mr. Ramon Sierra". Peters asks "The Philippine Statesman?". Harding says "Yes, Mr. Sierra and his aide, Colonel Manuel Quinto are scheduled to arrive in New York tomorrow morning". Peters says "I don't get it, David, why New York?" Harding says "Well, Mr. Sierra is ostensibly taking a long ocean voyage for his health". Peter asks "Is this a cover-up for his business here?" Harding says "Exactly, very careful plans were made not to arouse the suspicions of espionage agents in the Philippines. The secret conference in Washington will deal with a defense plan for the islands in case of a surprise attack, like what happened in Korea".

It is addressed to Criminal Investigation Department, New Scotland Yard, and sent from a man named Crittenden, living at Aston Clinton in Buckinghamshire. While the Inspector was glancing over it, a visitor was announced. He came in and laid a three day old copy of the Morning Telegraph newspaper on the Inspector's desk. The visitor asks "Are you Inspector Rockeed?" He answers "Yes". The visitor says "My name is Norman Ramsey, formerly of Blackpool, but now a resident in Shepherd's Bush. I've been carrying this paper around for three days". Rockeed asks "Why?" Ramsey says "This article here". Ramsey points to the article. Rockeed reads "Highgate tragedy, bride drowns in bath". He looks at Mr. Ramsey and asks "What about it Mr. Ramsey?" Ramsey says "I've come here because I was a witness to a very similar case two years ago". Rockeed asks "Where, sir?" Ramsey says "In Blackpool, where I formerly lived. A bride drowned in her bath just two days after her wedding". Rockeed asks "What was her name?" Ramsey says "Her name was Brown". Rockeed says "I see. Well, Mr. Ramsey you are to be commended for bringing this to our attention. That was also her husband's name, I assume". Ramsey says "Stanley Brown was his name". Rockeed asks "What happened to him? Do you remember?" Ramsey says "I don't know. He went away the day his wife was buried, in rather a hurry I thought". Rockeed asks "Are you making an accusation Mr. Ramsey?" Ramsey says "I'm just telling you what I know about an extraordinary coincidence". Rockeed asks "Did you know the wife's maiden name?" Ramsey says "I believe it was Crittenden".

Monday Aug 11, 2025
Reporter Joe Cathcart and the Police Lieutenant Halloran are looking at a once attractive blonde, in her early 30s, that is now on a slab in the city morgue. Halloran says "Yep, there you are. The unidentified body picked up off Pier 23, at the end of of Greenwich Street, at 3 P.M. yesterday. The Medical Examiner thinks she hit the water Tuesday night around 8 o'clock". Joe says "Okay Lieutenant, suicide?" Halloran says "And what else?" Joe says "I'm asking". Halloran says "If we decide different we'll let you know". Joe says "What's the matter? Wife overcook your eggs?" Halloran says "Just forget about the circulation buildup, that's all. I don't want to read any headlines about the police being baffled in the death of a mystery beauty. It's a suicide. Dame got to moping and jumped in the bay. We've had twelve just like her so far this year. Par for the course is twenty, so we'll have eight more between now and Christmas. No mystery threats now or dark foreigners or anonymous phone calls to your city desk". Joe says "Lieutenant Halloran, you have a nasty, suspicious mind". Halloran says "Why shouldn't I? What's Walter Dunn's top staff man doing on a routine suicide like this one? Right after I spend all morning with a little finishing school job, answering a million and one questions". Joe says "Hey, wait a minute. What finishing school job?" Halloran says "Tweed suit, horn rim specs, hair in a bun, you know her, Joe. I thought she was your leg man". Joe says "I don't know her, and my leg man is me. What's her name?" Halloran says "You got me. Ask Walter. He sent her". Joe says "Okay, thanks Halloran". Halloran says "And write it honest will you? Just this once".

Early in the evening, Peter Woods, a young lawyer, had time to kill before his appointment with Hilda Ryan, his fiancé, so he took a walk along Madison Avenue which was practically deserted. He stopped to window browse outside a bookshop. Just as he was getting interested in some of the titles, he was joined by a couple. The guy says "What you stopping here for Dixie?" She says "Maybe I like books". He says "Maybe you don't. Maybe you're just stalling for time, huh?" She says "Oh Steve, let go my arm. You are hurting me". Steve says "Am I? Then, let's get moving. Now you don't really mean that do you baby?" Peter says "Excuse me mister, I don't like to break into a love scene". Steve says "Well then, don't pal". Peter says "Take your hand off her". Steve says "Okay, Sir Galahad, now I'll give it to you". Dixie says "Steve don't. Oh...you knocked him out, with one punch". Peter says "Yeah, maybe I'm stronger than I thought". Dixie says "What is your name?" He says "I'm Peter Woods". Dixie says "Oh, Peter darling, how can I thank you? If it had not been for you I would have been...." Just then, a police officer walks up. Peter says "You're just in time officer. This girl was being molested". The officer says "Yeah, by whom?" Peter says "That man down there....." The officer asks "What man down where, buddy?" Peter says "Why, he's disappeared. He was just lying there, officer". The officer says "Let me smell your breath". Peter says "I'm not drunk. Ask this lady she'll tell you what happened". Dixie says "You bet I will, officer, this man Peter Woods, he tried to kill me".

Sunday Aug 10, 2025
Sunday Aug 10, 2025
The note is given to the baker's delivery boy, Henri. He drives the dilapidated old truck through those majestic iron gates of the Chateau Breton, 12 miles south of Paris. Henri circled the huge house and came to a stop at the servant's entrance. Celeste's personal maid, Muriel, answers the door. A message for Celeste is given to her. Muriel then begins that long climb up to Celeste's room. Three flights of marble stairs and then down the carpeted corridor to the fourth door on the right hand side. As Muriel approached her door, Celeste was reading. It was her way of passing time while she waited for some word from Paul Blanchard. Muriel knocked on her door. Upon entering, Muriel says "A message, mademoiselle". Celeste asks "Who is it from?". Muriel says "I do not know. It was delivered by the boy that drives the baker's truck. Celeste says "Give it to me". She looks at the note, and says "Oh, this handwriting. It is from Paul. My Paul is here in Paris. He is waiting for me in the cafe in Montparnasse. I was afraid he was dead". During this time, Martin Ingalls sat in a dingy little room in the back of the Cafe de Trois Chars, drinking cognac, and waiting. About an hour later, Celeste comes into the room, and says "Paul, oh my Paul!. Martin stood up and says "Mademoiselle Breton?" She says "Oh, you are not Paul". Martin says "No". She asks "Where is he?" Martin says "Mademoiselle, I was a friend of Paul Blanchard". Celeste asks "But, where is he? Where is Paul? Answer me". Martin says "Very well. Paul is dead".

She says "The second one to the left". Harry says "It's a mink, isn't it?" Janet says "Yes, can you get that one for me?" Harry says "Sure I can, easy". Janet says "But, it costs ten thousand dollars, if that's the one they showed in the ad". Harry asks "Well, is it the one in the ad?" Janet says "Yes, I'm sure it is". Harry says "Okay baby, then I'll get it for you". Janet asks "But, how Harry?" Harry says "I'll show you how". Janet asks "When, now?" Harry says "No, it may take a couple of days. Yeah, it took me longer than that to get fur coats before". Janet says "But, that was in other cities darling. Maybe things are different here". Harry says "Maybe, but I'm the same and my plan is the same". Janet says "Yes, darling I know". Harry says "Okay then, as long as you know. All we need to get that coat is two thousand dollars, a rainy day, and Boston Blackie". A few days later, Harry and Janet are in the store. Harry says "Okay Janet, let's get moving. She asks "You got the coat, Harry, the mink?" Harry says "What do you think I was doing while you were paying two thousand for that Persian lamb?" She asks "Where is it Harry?". He says "Right here on my arm, under the rain coat. Yeah, we're getting soaked. Hey, taxi". A taxi stops and they get into the back seat. Harry says "Western Hotel, driver. Yeah, we'll go to my place for a while until we dry out".

The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes - A Case of Identity
Saturday Aug 09, 2025
Saturday Aug 09, 2025
Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson are sitting on either side of the fire in his lodgings at Baker Street discussing criminal psychology and deduction. Holmes explains to Watson, the more complicated and interesting crimes are usually the seemingly insignificant, everyday incidents that escape the public’s notice. Holmes says “The bigger the crime, the more obvious, as a rule, is the motive”. Watson, not fully convinced, listens as his friend expounds upon the importance of small, overlooked details for the key to a mystery. During their conversation, Holmes and Watson are visited by a young woman named Mary Sutherland, who is in need of help in finding a missing person. Miss Sutherland explains to Holmes that her stepfather, Mr. James Windibank, disapproves of her seeking help, but she is desperate to find Mr. Hosmer Angel. She and Angel first met a ball, then later became romantic. Miss Sutherland explains "Angel is a soft-spoken, shy gentleman. Due to his very sensitive eyes, he wears sunglasses and comes out only at night". After her stepfather left for France, Angel approached Miss Sutherland with a marriage proposal, which she accepted. However, on the day of the wedding, he disappears.

Rodney has received a message that his Aunt Victoria is gravely ill. He and his wife, Celia are driving to his aunt's home. Celia says "You're driving too fast, Rodney". He says "We mustn't be late". Celia asks "You really think your aunt is dying?" Rodney says "The message was urgent, Celia. Aunt Victoria has been ill for a long time". Celia says "She'll live forever that one, when you're that rich you never die". Rodney says "Now Celia, we mustn't be disrespectful towards Aunt Vicki. Remember, I'm her favorite nephew”. Celia says "She's also got a favorite niece". Rodney says "Don't worry about my cousin Imogene. She doesn't stand a chance". Celia says "In the will?" Rodney says "Yes". Celia asks "What makes you so sure?" Rodney says "Aunt Victoria never approved of the man Imogene married, Carl Pepper". Celia says "Well, I don't blame her. He's certainly crude". Rodney says "And revolting". Celia says "So's your cousin, Imogene, for that matter". Rodney says "She's an utter mess". Celia asks "How did you get mixed up with relatives like that, Rodney? He says "I had no choice my dear, they were born to me, so to speak". Celia asks "How much money does your Aunt Victoria have?" Rodney says "I dare say, it may amount to a million or so and it's all in cash. Victoria doesn't believe in investments, and I'm not so sure she believes in banks".

Friday Aug 08, 2025
Friday Aug 08, 2025
It is late at night in the deserted waterfront of a large southern city. Two guys named Blackie and Polty are following another man down to a warehouse. Blackie says "He takes 190 bucks from me in a card game, and then says he don't want to play no more. You told us he was your cousin, Polty. What kind of a guy is this?" Polty says "I don't know Blackie. He just got into the country today, besides he's sick. You could see how sick he was". Blackie says "Not too sick to take my hundred and ninety". Polty says "Blackie, there he is. He's behind those trucks there". Blackie says "I want my money back, Polty". He says "All right, come on let's get it". Two shots are then heard. The next day, Paul Cleaver, the local coroner, calls his boss, Dr. Clinton Reed, about some strange results from the autopsy of a homicide victim. Dr. Reed agrees to come down to the morgue to take a look. He says "You better hold everybody there that had any contact with the body, just in case". Shortly, Dr. Reed arrives at the morgue and asks Cleaver "When did they bring the body in?" Cleaver says "About two hours ago. I did the autopsy right away". Reed asks "Besides you, how many others handled the body?" Cleaver says "About a dozen. They're down the hall waiting". Dr. Reed takes a look through microscope, and says "It's pure culture. Cleaver, keep away from the body, and have it cremated. I want everything that's touched him either buried or sterilized". Cleaver says "Oh, they sent over the serum, the streptomycin just before you got here". Reed says "Good, we'll take a shot, then get to work on the men down the hall, two cc's each. Cleaver, not a word about what it really is. I'm gonna call the mayor let's hope he can see me right away".

Thursday Aug 07, 2025
Thursday Aug 07, 2025
Lieutenant Ben Guthrie sees Sergeant Charlie Quine on the way to the nightly line-up. Guthrie has not brought a witness to the viewing area. He is just there to observe. Quine asks "What's the latest on the Bromell Case?" Guthrie says "Nothing new. He goes to trial tomorrow". Quine says "Okay, see you later. I'm going to the office. Later, during the line-up procedure, Quine comes back to talk to Guthrie. He says "Can I tell you something, Ben?" Guthrie says "Yeah". Quine says "We'd better go outside". Both step into the hallway. Quine says "Lillian Jacobs have just killed". Guthrie says "What?" Quine says "They're bringing her in now". Guthrie says "Well, what's the rest?" Quine says "Walter wants to see you" Guthrie says "Okay, tell me about it on the way up". Quine says "Nothing much to tell. Some guy got her going into her apartment. He must have used a rifle. There are no leads". Guthrie says "Nuts!" Quine says "Yeah, that throws the whole Bromell case right out the window". Guthrie says "I was worried about something like this". Quine says "Well, we had two men with her. There were three shots. They didn't even see where the shots came from. Could have been from a building, or a car. They just didn't see it". Guthrie asks "You got men covering the area?" Quine says "Been covering it for the last twenty minutes". Guthrie says "They won't find anything." Quine says "You worked pretty hard on this one. Lilian's statement isn't enough for the trial". Guthrie says "Huh? No. I wanted Leo Bromell for the Jacob's killing for the last three years. I finally get him and lose my only witness".

In the town of Broomeville, Fred Brewster is working at his gas station, when a big sedan slams on the brakes and stops near the gas pumps. The driver yells out of the car window "Hey, what is this joint called, Broomeville?" Fred says "Yes, this is Broomeville. The way your headed is Timber Corners". The driver hits the gas pedal, gets back on the road, and almost causes a wreck. Fred yells "Hey, look out! Holy smoke, mister, where do you think you're going? Just cause you drive a fancy sedan from the city". Being Halloween night, Fred's cousin Mervin Brewster, owner of the local broom factory, expects a few visitors stopping by his home. Soon, his doorbell rings. Mervin says "Hey, I know, I heard your car. Heard it drive up. I'm coming. Shoes now, where to put those? All right, all right, just a minute. Wonder who it could be? Don't go away, just take a minute. Well, a big sedan. Whose car is that for gosh..." Two gunshots rang out. A short while later, the police and a few of the townspeople are at the scene. Mervin's wife, Dora Brewster says "But why? Why? Everyone loved my husband, they did". Fred says "From the city it was, Lieutenant Riley. A big black sedan. Didn't catch license, but it was the same car they saw drive away from the house here". Dora says "They loved Mervin. Everyone did. I just came home and there he was, lying there dead by the door".

In the city of Detroit, at a joint called The Four Deuces, Dave Reynolds is talking to a dame named Vera, when the police enter. Dave quickly hands Vera his wallet and says "Listen to me, quick take this wallet and put it in your purse. Keep it for me till you see me again. I'll explain to you then". Vera says "Not a chance Mister. If you're in trouble...." Dave says "There's 100 bucks in this for you". She says "Give me the wallet". Dave says "You don't know me, if anyone asks questions". A police officer comes over to their table and says "Hello, Davey. Your name's Dave Reynolds isn't it?" Dave says "No, you got the wrong party. The officer says "What's his name, Miss?" Vera says "I don't know. Never laid eyes on this character before tonight". Officer says "You're wanted down at headquarters, Davey. Come along with me". Dave says "For what? My name isn't Reynolds. You haven't got to anything on me". Officer says "We'll see about that. I'll ask you once more nicely to come along". Dave says "Okay, I'm coming". This "arrest" was part of a trap planned by the FBI for the roundup of a million dollar syndicate dealing in smuggled gems. Gold taken out of the U.S. was being converted in the European market for reinvestment in diamonds, which were in demand here for industrial purposes and as a hedge against fluctuating values. FBI Agent Dave Reynolds is posing as a small time hoodlum.

Escape - This Side of Nowhere
Tuesday Aug 05, 2025
Tuesday Aug 05, 2025
Pilot Deke Gannett owns an old Stinson airplane and makes his living by giving his customers a short plane ride, for three dollars each. There wasn't much business in Missouri, but he had better luck in Kansas. He visited a couple of smaller towns where a plane is still a fancy contraption. About 50 miles east of Wichita, he landed his plane in a grass field outside the town of Willing, hoping a day or so here, would provide enough to buy a new tire for the right wheel. Deke sees a farmer standing nearby and says "Hello there. Is this your field?" Farmer says "Say, that was pretty. Coming down out of the sky like that, I've seen you from a long way". Deke says "You like planes, huh?" Farmer says "Sure do. Yep, this is my field". Deke says "Well, look, I'd like to make a deal with you. I'll be here for a couple of days. Let me keep the plane here and I'll give you five bucks". Farmer says "Well...." Deke says "And a free ride". Farmer says "Mister, you got a deal. My name is Bill Maydew, let's shake on it." Deke put up posters in the town, and by 6 o'clock that night he made 36 dollars. He put the plane in Maydew's barn and asked him "Is there any place I can stay tonight?" Bill says "See that flying red horse sign over there? Across the street is Maydew's Willing Hotel. Deke say "Yours, huh?" Bill says "It ain't fancy, but it is restful. Got a city woman staying there, down from Kansas City". After dinner that night, Deke meets the lady from Kansas City, Miss Phyllis Naylor. She hires Deke to fly her to Wichita in the morning. Once they are up in the air, she says "How much would you want to fly me to Mexico?"

Tuesday Aug 05, 2025
On the morning of May the 20th, Wallace Bennett and John Linkman walked along the platform at Newcastle Station to board their train. Wallace says "I tell you John, my firm regards me most highly". John asks "In what way?" Wallace says "Well as you know, they allow me to travel with the colliery (coal mine business) wages each Friday from the bank in Newcastle to our office at Alnmouth". John says "That's a very responsible task. Come my friend, admit the truth. They really don't allow you to travel unescorted, with so much money in that black leather bag?" Wallace says "Oh yes they do. No guards whatsoever. You see they place great trust in me". John says "They do indeed". Wallace says "Mark my words, I'm in line for a colliery managership one day". John says "And you deserve it my dear chap". Wallace says "Yes, it'll be a fine reward for 20 years work". As they continue to walk along the platform, Wallace greets a man that is with a neighboring colliery (coal mine business) named Collins. Wallace says "Come on, John. This is our carriage". As they climb aboard, John says "It seems to be empty. Splendid, we can have good talk on our journey to Alnmouth". There were small station stops along the line. At Morpeth, the train took up water. A few people got out to stretch their legs. Others passed through the barrier and gave up their tickets. Among them was a man in a grey overcoat. The ticket clerk says "Oh, sir, your tickets are onward to Alnmouth. The man says "Yes, I've changed my mind. I'm getting off here, thank you".

Casey, Crime Photographer - Bright New Star
Monday Aug 04, 2025
Monday Aug 04, 2025
Late in the afternoon, the auditorium of a metropolitan theater is empty and its half-lighted stage is bare, except for several dozen folding chairs and a few tables that have been used for a rehearsal. In the center of the stage stands a smiling young woman surrounded by newspaper reporters and photographers. Among them, Anne Williams and Casey. After several pictures are taken, Annie says "Say, you photographers get out of the way and give us reporters a chance". Casey says "Annie, you can take over as far as I'm concerned. I've wasted enough good press film on this publicity buildup". Annie asks "You think she's pretty?" Casey says "Sure, but I think she'd double-cross her own mother in order to get what she wants". Annie says "Well, if she's half as good as the rave notices she got on the out-of-town tryouts, she'll be the biggest smash we've had for a long time". Casey says "Yeah. Well, go get your interview. I'll have a gab with Hartley Owens". Annie says "I'm glad he's finally got what seems an assured success in this play". Casey says "Yeah, so am I. He must have been down to his last half a shoestring when he got his mitts on this comedy". Annie says "Well, I'll get over to this bright new star and hear her success story. I'll join you after". About a minute later, Casey pats a visit to Mr. Owens. Hartley says "It was nice of all you newspaper boys and girls to come here today and give me this break". Casey says "You made sure we'd give you this break". Hartley says "You mean the insurance story?" Casey says "It's an old publicity gag, Mr. Owens, but it always works. When we got the release about you insuring your new star for a quarter of a million bucks, well, it made good copy".

Monday Aug 04, 2025
Monday Aug 04, 2025
In New York City, after one o'clock in the morning, the doorbell to Helen Casey's west side apartment is ringing. As she slips on her robe, she says to herself "Who can that be? Perhaps I shouldn't go to the door, but, it might be something important". She opens her door slightly and says "Yes, who is it? What do you want?" At first, she sees no one. She opens the door wider and says "Why, there's no one out here. They must have gone". Then, she says "Oh, it's you! I want to explain. I've been wanting to explain to you!" Suddenly a loud scream is heard. An hour later, Cyrus Allen, a pawnbroker, living in his business on the east side, is awakened by someone pounding on his front door. He says "All right, I'm coming. Merciful Heavens, what sort of hour is this to get a man out of his bed? Can't they see the place is closed? He opens the door and says "Yes, you! What are you doing here? You've never come here before! I've been wanting to explain to you. If you just give me a chance to explain to you, oh no! Again, a loud yell is heard. At central headquarters, the following morning, Mr. Chameleon is talking with the Commissioner of Police. He says "It is very strange, Commissioner, that this woman, Helen Casey, who lived in a swanky apartment on the west side, was killed in the same manner as Cyrus Allen, a pawnbroker on the east side".

You say it was almost ten minutes after you returned home that you first discovered your husband, Christopher's body". She says "Yes, Inspector Thorne. I thought he was working and I didn't want to disturb him". Thorne asks "Well then, why did you go into the room ten minutes later?" Betsy says "Lunch was ready. There it is on the table. I suppose I should have put the food away. Nothing seems to matter now". Thorne asks "Will you take Sergeant Muggins and me to the scene of the murder of Mrs. Hudson?" She says "Yes, if it will help you, Inspector". He asks her "Where were you before you returned home, Mrs. Hudson?" She says "Shopping, buying fall clothes. The packages are right there on the hall table, Inspector. This is Chris's study. He always worked here". Thorne says "I know this isn't easy for you, Mrs. Hudson". Muggins says "Wow, this room looks like a cyclone hit it chief". Thorne says "It sure does, Sergeant. Desk drawers turned upside down, books pulled out of the shelves". Muggins says "Chief, the murderer turned the room inside out, but he didn't go through the dead man's pockets. He must have found what he was looking for".

The Lives of Harry Line - Dark Enchantress
Sunday Aug 03, 2025
Sunday Aug 03, 2025
Harry Lime is in the city of Algiers, in North Africa, visiting the Barbary Queen, a place where the tourists definitely aren't invited. There, he meets his old friend, Tutor, who is the owner of the establishment. Tutor says "Welcome back to the Casbah, Harry. I've been saving your favorite table here for, how long is it?" Harry says "Oh, too long, Tutor. I see the Barbary Queen hasn't changed. Same sights, same smells. Haven't your customers gone home since my last visit?" Tutor says "Please, Mon Ami. It's not so much like the old days anymore. The Barbary Queen is becoming almost dull". Just then, a big fight breaks out between other patrons, and Tutor has to break it up. He says "All right, the fight is finished. The trouble is over". Harry says "It appears the trouble is just beginning". A lady standing nearby says "That depends on what you call trouble. May I join you?" Harry says "Certainly". She says "You haven't been to the Barbary Queen before?" Harry says "Not recently, not since you joined the staff". Tutor walks over and says "Ah, my dear Magda, I'm glad you discovered my friend. This is Harry Lyme. You treat him good. He's a fine man". Magda says "I shall do my best". Tutor says "Now, I'll send over two drinks on the house". Magda says "You're friends with Tutor, and you're an American. Few Americans ever come here, and none of them are friends with Tutor". Harry says "Oh, we aren't exactly the best of friends, Tutor and I, but we've been partners in a couple of deals" Magda says "Oh, so that's it. I knew you must be valuable to him".

The Adventures of Philip Marlowe - The Last Laugh
Friday Aug 01, 2025
Friday Aug 01, 2025
Marlowe had spent a week wading through moldy beer joints and cheap hotels looking for a missing dancer, who was eventually found dead in a coal cellar. After that, he decides he needed to take a long, easy weekend someplace where the surf meets the sand, say, Ensenada. Without so much as a second thought, Marlowe throws some clothes in a bag, phones the Riviera Pacifico for reservations, and charges out the door, where he runs head on into a funny man with a studious face coming in. The man says "Oh, I'm awfully sorry. Why, why, you're Philip Marlowe". Marlowe says "Yeah, I know". The man says "My name is Darwin. I represent the law firm that handles the interests of Julius Spangler". Marlowe says "Did you say Julius Spangler? Now listen, I had a run-in with that screwball Spangler less than a month ago. A man was knocked down a flight of stairs, I got shot at, and the house was set on fire. Julius called it a practical joke and laughed himself silly. Goodbye, Mr. Darwin". Darwin says "Hey, but that sort of thing is all over now, Mr. Marlowe. Mr. Spangler is dead. He died last week in Brazil, the result of a hunting accident, and he has named you in his will". Marlowe says "He's named me? You mean I....". Darwin says "Precisely. You're one of Mr. Spangler's heirs. I shall read the will tonight at eight o'clock in his home on Catalina Island. I trust you'll be present". Marlowe says "Not on your life. It's me for Ensenada and nothing's gonna stop me". Darwin says "There are only five other heirs, and the estate runs well over 500,000 dollars". Marlowe says "Oh?". Darwin says "Almost any way you split that much up, Mr. Marlowe, it comes out something more substantial than a weekend at Ensenada".

The Whistler - Hired Alibi
Friday Aug 01, 2025
Friday Aug 01, 2025
The dry desert heat seemed to add to the pressure and anguish to the man in the swiftly moving automobile. Paul Burns' trip to Los Angeles had proved useless. He was forced to drive back and face his wife, Edith, tell her that he had failed. If only there was a way out, somehow. On the lonely highway, Paul sees a young man hitchhiking, and slows down. The young man says "Hey, how about a lift?" Paul says "Huh? Oh, sure". Young man says "Thanks, friend. How far are you going? Paul says "I'm going through Flagstaff, then 50 miles north". Young man says "I'll get out at Flagstaff". Paul says "Okay". He was glad to have someone to talk to on the long trip. As Paul drove on, he begin to speculate about the young man, wondering if he haven't seen him somewhere before. A few more miles down the road, and Paul begins to remember him. Paul becomes tense with excitement. He says to himself "If it is true, it can change a lot of things. Yes, it can, but I've got to be sure". The young man asks "Is something wrong?" Paul says "No. I just noticed I'm out of cigarettes. I thought I'd pull in at that cafe up ahead. Would you mind running in for me?". The young man says "Hey, look, you sure you're not just tired of my company, maybe?" Paul says "Of course not. Here, and get a pack for yourself". Young man says "Thanks, I'll do that". Paul waits nervously until he disappears into the little roadside cafe. Paul then immediately turns around and picks up the newspaper on the back seat. The young man's picture stares up at him from a newspaper dated earlier in the week. Paul says "He is Joe Norbella. My hitchhiking friend is wanted by the Los Angeles Police for killing a theater manager during a holdup!"

Albert Perry is waiting for his wife, Elspeth, at Luigi's Restaurant. Luigi asks "Mr. Perry, you ordered dinner now? Albert says "No, not yet, Luigi. I'm still waiting for my wife. She's late for some reason". Luigi says "Yes, I can see. You wait for two hours and look what you do to the table cloth, Mr. Perry, writing all over it like that. The laundry, she complain, is hard to get out" Albert says "I'm sorry, Luigi. Bring me a glass of Chianti, will you?" He says "Yes, Mr. Perry". Elspeth arrives and says "Oh, Albert, I'm sorry I'm late. My poor star, darling. I've kept you waiting. Have you ordered yet?" Albert says "Just a glass of wine". Elspeth says "One glass? Luigi, bring a whole bottle. We're celebrating, darling". Albert asks "Celebrating what?" Elspeth says "I got the part. What do you think of that, my sweet?" Albert says "Sure, that's great news, but why did it take this long?" Elspeth says "Well, you know how Lee Hamill likes to talk". Luigi says "The Chianti, Mr. Perry". Elspeth says "Chianti? It should be champagne". Albert says "You know as well as I do, we can't even afford this". She says "Oh, but we can. I'll be getting five hundred dollars a week. Think of that. Oh, darling, I didn't tell you. I think there's a part for you, the part of Tony. He's just your type. When I see Lee tomorrow, I'll talk to him about it". Albert says "No, save your breath. I saw him last week. She says "You did? You didn't tell me". He says "Lee said there was nothing for me in the play. Nothing". She says "Oh, but that was last week, darling. Now he may feel different, especially if I ask him. I'll turn on the fatal charm". He says "Why, you'll do nothing of the kind, not with that wolf".

Thursday Jul 31, 2025
Thursday Jul 31, 2025
In a hotel room in Paris, Ken Thurston (X), a U.S. Intelligence agent, is meeting with his is supervisor, Chief of the U.S. Intelligence Agency. The purpose of this meeting is to determine the best strategy to combat the millions of dollars in counterfeit United States currency pouring into France and Italy. The Chief says "No sir, Ken the whole thing's a frame up and it's too dangerous. You ought to know that". Ken says "Maybe so, Chief, but what else do have to work on? After ten days over here, we haven't been able to turn up a lead. This may be that lead. I know Vonstein, the counterfieter, and I know his work. He made the page on which these bills are being printed. There's no question about it now". Chief says "That still doesn't mean you've got to accept his invitation to Switzerland and get yourself killed". Ken says "No, it's just that I think he's conceited enough to believe he can get me up there and convince me he's really going straight". Chief says "Well, you know he might be, at that. The Swiss authorities didn't find a thing when they raided him. He never has any visitors, and never goes anywhere himself. Maybe he has retired". Ken says "Do you want to bet?" Chief says "If he is the brain behind this counterfeiting, then how's he doing it? Ken says "That is exactly what I'm going to Balgach in Switzerland to find out".

Richard Diamond, Private Detective - The Van Dyke Seance Case
Wednesday Jul 30, 2025
Wednesday Jul 30, 2025
Richard is visited by Miss Nancy Van Dyke at his office. She says "I'm worried about my aunt, Mr. Diamond. Lately she's been seeing a man who calls himself Dr. Langley". Richard asks "Are you of the Long Island Van Dykes?" She says "Well, we used to live on Long Island, and yes, we are quite wealthy". Richard asks "You think this Dr. Langley is after your aunt's money, is that it?" She says "Yes. He's been taking her to see a clairvoyant, and she claims that he produced her dead mother and that she talked with her. My aunt says that this apparition, or whatever it is, warned her of impending danger". Richard asks "What's the medium's name?" Nancy says "He calls himself Professor Leonardo". Richard says "What else did the ghost have to say?" Nancy says "Well, she said, or it said, to trust Dr. Langley, and that's exactly what my aunt started to do. She even consults him on matters of business. He's completely sold her on this phony Professor Leonardo, and unless I miss my guess, he's got a wandering eye for her jewelry collection. She had it out, and she was showing it to him last evening". Richard asks "What do you want me to do?" Nancy says "I want you to prove that this Dr. Langley and the Professor are charlatans. If you can do that, please report it to my aunt. Then, stop by my place at 741 Madison Avenue, and I'll pay you the rest of your fee".

Lila wants to do some shopping for a new hat, so she gets ready to leave. Barry escorts her down to the street, making sure everything looks normal. She says "It is such as nice day, and the shops are not very far, could we just walk?" Barrie says "It is safer if we take my car". As they get into his car, Lila says "I don't know exactly what you think you're protecting me from". Barrie says "I don't either. Your husband wasn't very generous with his information, however, he was generous with his money, so I'm trying to earn it. Where's the hat shop?" Lila suddenly sees something that catches her eye in another shop. She says "Oh wait, that red bathing suit in Madame Fleur's shop window. Stop here, I want to try it on". Barrie parks the car and they enter the shop. Madame Fleur says "Good morning, Madame. What can I show you? Lila says "That bathing suit you have in the window". Madame Fleur, while retrieving one to try on, says "Ah, Madame has magnificent taste", then, shows her to the dressing room. Fifteen minutes pass, and Barrie says "She's been in there quite a while. Would you mind hurrying her up?" Madame Fleur goes to check on her. She comes back and tells Barrie "The dressing room door is locked, and she doe not answer". They both go into the dressing room, calling out to her. Barrie says "I'm going to break the door down". After doing so, Lila is nowhere to be found.

Commercial flight 801 to New York has been in the air for about two hours. The plane's origin was the airport of a small, politically struggling South American country. Over the airplane telephone system, Scotty, the co-pilot, calls Head Flight Attendant Angie Parsons, telling her to quickly come to the cockpit and bring the flight manifest. Angie says "What's wrong, Scotty?" He says "Please don't ask questions, just hurry. We are in big trouble, and don't forget that manifest". When she arrives, Deacon, the pilot, says "Take over, Scotty, I'll brief Angie. Do you know any of the passengers on this ship?" Angie says "Well, a couple of people I recognize, regulars, guys I've met on other flights, salesmen, you know". Deacon says "Good, we'll check them off in a minute. First, let's concentrate on our Senor Ramirez and the group in first class. Angie says "Yes sir, there are four. They're in seats A1 through A4". Deacon says "Ramirez is Senor Simeon Aguilar, the new Presidente of the troubled Republic we took off from two hours ago. The rest of the guys are his security guards". Angie asks "But why would the president of a country travel on a commercial airline?" Deacon says "They've got internal problems in that little country. However, he's not our main concern. I just got a security flash from control that we may be carrying a mad bomber, or assassin. A guy who could be ready to, not only to blow himself up, but Presidente Aguilar, and the rest of us as well”.

He says "Did you hear about the Johnson payroll robbery last week down in New York?" Johnny says "I read about it but there weren't too many details". Pat says "They got 100,000 dollars, and the payroll was insured by one of the companies we represent". Johnny asks "How many were in on the robbery?" Pat says "We're not sure, but there were several. One of them was fatally wounded". Johnny asks "Was he able to talk before he died?" Pat says "Yeah, just enough to tell us that the plan was to split up after the robbery, then meet in another city to divide the loot". Johnny says "You think it's out in California". Pat says "We also think one of the crooks may be trying to double cross the others". Johnny says "Hiding out from them, maybe?" Pat says "That's the general idea. We got a call from Los Angeles this morning from a fellow who wouldn't give his name, but he claimed he could give us a lead on the one who has the dough, for a price of course. So, you are to meet him in Los Angeles and find out what he knows. Johnny says "Alright, how do I contact this man?" Pat says "He will contact you at the Hotel Nestor".

Tuesday Jul 29, 2025
Tuesday Jul 29, 2025
The Cafe Tambourine had a busy Saturday night. At about 11 o'clock the next morning, Rocky collected all of the receipts and sat down at a table, next to a fan, to count the proceeds. He had just finished when there was a knock at the door. Rocky shoved the money bag under the counter as he threw the latch on the door. He opened it to see an old acquaintance, Matt Gallagher. Rocky says "What wind blew you in, Matt?" He says "A good wind it was that lead to the sight of you again. Let's see, where was it? Calcutta, Frisco, Singapore". Rocky says "Oh, don't make me remember". Matt says "Yeah, thinking of that time we had with a Sultan's daughter in Istanbul. Rocky says "Sure, yeah, by the way, how much money did I loan you to get out of town?" Matt says "Bygones Rocky, bygones. Come now, set me up with a nip, will you?" Rocky says "Sure, I'll just add it to your bill". Matt says "Yeah, that's an idea and bring around the bottle, we'll be drinking to old times". Rocky says "Yeah, just leave a little for the cash customers". Matt says "A toast, to Francie Bey. As lovely as a lady that ever set her feet on the streets of Cairo". Rocky asks "This Francie, she's here?" Matt says "At the Shadrach Hotel, pining her heart out for me. We're going to be settling down. That's what I wanted to talk about with you today" Rocky says "Okay, how much?" Matt says "Well, the fact of the matter is that I will be needing a little money". Rocky says "I wondered when you would get around to it". Matt says "But you don't understand, lad. I'm cutting you in". Rocky says "On what?" Matt says "How would you like to own the Suez Canal?"

One of the men says "We need some gas". Wade says "Sorry, I've already locked the pumps. There's an all-night place about two blocks up. It's a big truck stop, you can't miss it." The first man says to the second "Did you hear that Fred?" Fred says "Yeah Vinnie, I heard it. The man don't want to wait on us, Fred". Wade says "I didn't say that. I said I was closed". Fred says "He's laughing at us, Vinnie. He thinks it's funny that he don't want to wait on us". Wade says "There's no point in getting out of the car. I'm not going to wait on you". Vinnie says "Hear that, Fred? He's a real nasty guy". Fred says "Yeah, no wonder his wife don't like him". Wade says "What's that supposed to mean?" Vinnie says "You know, Fred, this guy ain't very bright". Fred says "Yeah, maybe his wife never told him. Maybe she didn't want to hurt his feelings". Wade says "What are you guys up to?" Suddenly, they grab Wade and force him back into the station. He says "If this is a stick-up, you guys are out of luck. All the money is in the safe and the day man has the keys". Vinnie says "He thinks it's a hold-up, Fred". Fred says "I don't know why, Vinnie. You got a nice, honest face". Vinnie says "No, it's like his wife said. He's a dope. Wade says "What is this, some kind of a gag Estelle is pulling?" Fred says "Oh, no Mr. Wade, it's not a gag. Did you think it was a gag when she took out the insurance policy on you last year?"

He says his name is Lafarge, and it's a matter of life and death". Mr. Keen says "I'll see him at once, Mike". Mike says "Right, sir". Mike proceeds to bring Lafarge into the office. Mr. Keen asks "You wanted to see me?" The man says "Mr. Keen, my name is Lafarge, Monsieur Jean Lafarge. I am grateful that you consented to see me. The situation cannot wait". Mr. Keen asks "What was it you wanted to see me about, Mr. Lafarge?" He says "Murder, Monsieur. Last night, a woman named Edna Corring was killed in her home here in New York" Mr. Keen says "Edna Corring? Seems to me I've heard that name before". Lafarge says "She was a very wealthy and beautiful woman, Monsieur Keen, much in the news". Mike says "I didn't read about her murder in the papers this morning". Lafarge says "It was kept from the papers, Monsieur Clancy. The police believe they will have a better chance to catch the killer if there is no publicity at the moment".

Will asks "Angie, don't you know anything except church music? She says "I learned it when I was a child and I've never learned nothing since". Will says "Well, you ain't a child now". Angela says "My husband's liked my playing, both of them". Will says "Is that what killed them?" She says "Will Heinze, I'm never going to invite you back for another evening". Will says "Don't then". Angela says "Will, I baked a chocolate cake this afternoon". He says "Well, let's have some". She says "You know, I baked every day for both my husbands". He says "Look Angie, you're not hooking me for number three, so if you're going to make hints, good night". She says "Will, what's wrong with us getting married? Is there something about me you don't like?" He says "No Angie, it ain't that, it's my father. There would be nobody to look after him". Suddenly, the doorbell rang. Will says "You got more company?" She says "No". He says "Go see who it is". Angela opens the front door. She says "Oh, it's Mr. Heinze. Will, your father is here. Won't you come in? I was just about to serve chocolate cake". He says "I need to speak to Will". Angela goes to the kitchen and Mr. Heinze sits down next to Will. He says "Will, there were two policemen around the house looking for you. They said the hardware store was broken into and you did it. Did you?" Will says "Well.....yeah". Mr. Heinze says "How many times have I told you not to break into anything, unless I say so.

Clara says "Jed, you Jed, wake up I said". Jed says "Huh? What is it Clara, time to eat? Clara says "Nope". Jed says "Then, leave me be". Clara says "Just a minute, I want to talk to you". Jed says "Now what?" Clara says "I am getting sick to death about what's going on around here. 365 days a year you eat, sleep, then you get up and eat again. He says "Now, don't go starting that again". She says "I tell you I'm sick to death of it. When are you going to get to work? He says "I already told you. I don't like work". She says "Well we need to eat and we need clothes. Working is the only way to get them things". He says "What makes you think that? She says "you got some other way?" He says "Maybe I have". She says "Like what?" He says "Clara, a man don't make no real money working with his hands. He gets it out up here, his head, thinking". She says "That leaves you out then". He says "Now, let me talk. All the time that you've been yapping and nagging at me around here, I've been thinking. Thinking real hard, and I got a way to make me some big money. More than you ever seen in your whole life. Now you just listen to me. Here's what I'm aiming to do". Later that afternoon, a young high school girl is walking down the street in a nearby town. Near the corner, a battered old car pulls up close to her.

The Epic Casebook - The Waters of Death
Saturday Jul 26, 2025
Saturday Jul 26, 2025
Mr. Patrick Scott had just began his holiday when he checked in at the Marlo Cove Hotel. The Marlo Cove area was known for it's popularity as a beautiful vacation and tourist spot. The next day, after tea, he decided to take a walk up to the top of the Marlo Cliffs to see the Bay and the surrounding areas. Once he was near the summit, he found a pay telescope which offered magnificent close-up views of the Marlo Bay. Looking out, he noticed their were no boats in the bay, except for one small dinghy with a single fisherman. Scott believed he recognized the fisherman as Steven Manoring, another guest in the hotel. Scott continued enjoying the views from the telescope, then turned his attention back to the dinghy. He noticed that the boat was still visible, but there was no sight of Manoring. Thinking that he might be in need of assistance, or possibly rescue, Scott hurried down to the jetty, and luckily Mr. Hayes was there with his boat. Scott jumped in and they went after him. Hays said "Did you say he fell out of the boat? He might have drowned by now". Scott says "I can see the dinghy, but I can't see any sign of Mannering". A few seconds later Scott says "There he is, grab his coat". They brought him back to the shore, thinking that they were taking part in a rescue operation as a result of an accident. They did not expect to find Steven Manoring dead, nor that his death was caused by a blunt instrument and not by drowning.

Melody says "That's no attitude, here he is". Mr. Lyon says "Regan, I got a job for you to do". Jeff says "You can tell me all about it tomorrow morning. So long". Lyon says "Now wait a minute. It's got to be taken care of now, tonight". Jeff says "Look, I worked hard all day. I'm tired, get somebody else". Lyon says "I told him you'd be there in 15 minutes. Now, take this down. His office is in the Taft Building, right by your place. He's an attorney named Collins Knight". Jeff says "Collins Knight? What rock did you look under for him?" Lyon says "Now, don't be smart, just because the guy serves little time once". Jeff says "And gets himself disbarred, re-entered, and tied up with every piece of gambling from here to Reno". Lyon says "I'm not interested in who they are or what they've done, as long as they can pay the bills. Collins Knight is the one who can do it, so hop over there and find out what's what. And call me if you run into any trouble". Regan goes to see Collins Knight. He says "Regan, I asked you to come here because I want you to find Big Ed Kitteridge for me. He's been missing for three days, according to his wife. Jeff says "From pictures I've seen of Big Ed he'd be a hard man to miss". Collins says "Yeah, I figured the same way, but, being gone for three days. I think someone's either cooled him off or he's on the lamb".

At the Connecticut State Prison, it was a rainy, depressing night. It was a night set aside for an execution. In the warden's office, two men wait, and count the passing minutes, the Warden, and the Prison Chaplin. Both are trying to forget what lies ahead. The Chaplin says "It's still raining, Warden". Warden says "Yeah, it would have to go and rain tonight". Chaplin says "It's a little past 11 o'clock. We haven't very much longer". Warden says "Oh, thank God....sorry, Chaplin. I guess I'm getting too old for this sort of thing. The necktie party didn't used to bother me so much, but this one is giving me the blue devils". Chaplin says "It's not a pleasant duty, even with the worst of them". Warden says "No. Chaplin, was he quiet when you left him?" He says "Yes, he was perfectly calm. I believe he'll stay that way to the end". Warden asks "When you were with him in his cell, did he talk?" Chaplin says "Oh yes, he talked very freely". Warden asks "What about?" Chaplin says "Almost everything". Warden asks "Did he talk about himself?" Chaplin says "He talked about almost everything, except himself". Warden says "That still seems to be the one thing he won't talk about, that's what's got my goat. He's been like that ever since he came in four months ago, watching tonight come closer, and closer, and still refusing to tell us who he really is". Chaplin says "I'm afraid he intends to go on that way, trying to make us believe his name is James Dyke". Warden says "That isn't his name anymore than it's mine. He's just trying to shield somebody, that's all. What time is it?"

I looked around for something to help me get my bearings and there was a street sign that read "O'Farrell". It stuck in my mind, so I gave it to your secretary when she asked for my name". Sam asks "What's your real name?" She says "I don't know. I don't know who I am, where I came from, or where I'm going Mr. Spade". Sam says "A lot of people suffer from temporary loss of memory. Most of them recover, but amnesia is a sickness and I am not a doctor". She says "Oh, then you won't try to help me?" Sam says "Well, I can give you the name of a good doctor. There's also Missing Persons at the police department". She says "I'd rather not contact the police, I might be wanted for some crime. I want to find out who I am for myself". Sam says "What do you think I can do for you?" She says "You might save my life". Sam says "From what?" She says "I'll try to tell you exactly how it happened. First, I looked at my watch, it was 3 minutes past 10. The cable car stopped at the corner, a man got on, and he sat down beside me. He caught hold of my arm, and I tried to pull away. He acted as if I were...." Sam says "I think I know what you mean. Did you find out who he was?" She says "No, I was too frightened to speak". Sam asks "What did he say?" She says "He sort of growled it out of the side of his mouth, but it sounded as if he said Mr. Lathrup wants to see you".

Archie says "Mr. Wolf begs to be excused at the last moment. He was unable to attend". She says "Well, I'm glad you could come". Archie says "You're not disappointed?" Mrs. Collins says "No, I don't think so, but I am rather upset. I'm afraid, Mr. Goodwin, for my life. That's why I called Mr. Wolf. Oh, you may leave your hat and coat there Mr. Goodwin". Archie says "Please call me Archie, Mrs. Goodwin". She says "Yes, and please call me Janie. Oh, and by the way, Archie, I think it would be best if I say you're an old beau of mine". Archie says "From where?" Janie says "In Hollywood. When I went to Hollywood High School and you went to USC". Archie says "Okay, but don't expect me to remember much about it". Janie says "I'll be flattered if you remember anything about it. Now, I want you to keep your eyes and ears open. Observe everything tonight. Okay, let's join the party.

Dan says "Let's take a chance" and tells the visitor to "Come in". Susie asks "Who are you mister?" The man says "My name is George Flit. I'm a detective". Dan says "A detective, huh?" Susie says "Why he isn't any bigger than me" Flit says "But I have nerves of steel and the heart of a lion". Dan says "Oh, I see, and what brings you here, Mr. Flit?" He says "Well, why don't you open the envelope I put in Box 13?" Dan opens it and says "There's nothing written on the paper inside. How about that Flit?" He says "See how clever I am? I put that envelope in Box 13 as bait. Yes, I knew it would lead me to the person who put the ad in the Star Times newspaper. Dan says "Very clever Mr. Flit. Now that you have discovered me, what do you need? Flit says "Mr. Holiday, I'd say you're just the man for the job. I'd handle it myself, only I'm so tiny. Besides I've done mostly divorce work. Just the right height for key holes". Dan says "What about the job?" Flit says "Well, Mr. Gilbert Bolton sent me 50 dollars just to attend a party tonight. I'll split with you if you'll go to the affair in my place". Dan says "What's the catch?" Flit says "Oh, there's really no catch. The only thing Mr. Bolton said was there might be a little, um, bloodshed".

The next two coin flips end up as heads. Slate says "We'll start in the morning Whit, about six o'clock. Whit says "Oh that's swell. I'll see you then. I don't think I'll be able to sleep. Jarvis says "It's all right, forget it. I found him". Ford says "You want me Sergeant?" Jarvis says "I want to know where the hell have you been? We've had the search parties out". Ford says "I popped home for a few minutes. I wanted to see how my wife was". Jarvis says "Ah, you pregnant fathers, and it wasn't a few minutes it was over an hour". Ford says "Sorry sergeant, here have a cigar in anticipation of the happy event. I should have told you I was going. I kept getting this nagging feeling something was going to go wrong". Jarvis says "Well, something has gone wrong. There was a break in at Lord Crombie's. The superintendent's been asking where the hell you were, and, oh, there's a bloke waiting to see you in your office". Ford says "At 1:00 in the morning? Who is he?" Jarvis says "His name's Marlo". Ford says "Never heard of him. Who's covering the Crombie robbery?" Jarvis says "Well as you weren't here, his lordship had to be satisfied with a mere Detective Sergeant. I sent Young Clark". Ford says "Oh well, for a sergeant he's capable". Jarvis says "And he doesn't sneak home every 5 minutes to see his wife. The superintendent wants you to phone him right away". Ford says "I'll do it from my office. What did you say this bloke's name was?" Jarvis says "Marlo, and, by the way, he said he was a clairvoyant".

Salesman says "That's not much money, but perhaps I can find something". Young man says "How about that old coupe over there?" Salesman says "Well, I could let you have it for 175 dollars". Young man says "No, a hundred flat, and that's my price". Salesman says "Wait a minute. I'll speak to the boss and see what he says. Look the car over and I'll be right back". The salesman returns and says "Good news, the boss says it is okay for a hundred dollars. Come over to the office and we can make out the papers". Salesman asks "Do you have the money with you?" Young man says "No. I got a cashier's check from the Neutral Bank in Chicago for 150 dollars. I thought I could pay for the car and 50 dollars back". Salesman says "Let me see that check. The boss is kind of funny about checks". Young man says "There you go. The Neutral Bank is the biggest bank in Chicago. It is as good as gold". Salesman says "Well, I'm sure it will be alright. Endorse it and I'll get you the pink slip". Salesman looks at his signature and says "Edward Fells, Chicago, Illinois. Thanks a lot, Mr. Fells, here's the pink slip." Of course, a few days later, the salesman calls the police department about the bad check.

Russell Wilson's story for the Des Moines Tribune began two hundred miles south in Kansas City. A young man named Freddie Bell is getting restless and feeling the need to travel. He tells his mother "I'm through hanging around the house, being a burden to you. I'm 21 years old. I can't just sit around and watch you work". His mother says "You can stay home, there are plenty of jobs". Freddie says "Not my kind of jobs. I want to be rich and famous. I want to own a big car, a big house, and to make sure you never have to work again, Ma". Mother says "I wish your father was alive and here to advise you. I can only say I believe you are making a terrible mistake". Freddie says "I've got to go out and seek my fortune". Mother says "If that's what you really want, I won't stand in your way". Freddie borrows 20 dollars from his mother, and begins his journey by jumping on a freight train heading toward Des Moines, Iowa. There, he meets a hobo riding the rails nicknamed "Idaho". Waking up the next morning, Freddie says "It will be daylight in an hour, Idaho. When does this train get to Des Moines?" Idaho says "This is the high ball express, kid. We are hitting the outskirts of Des Moines now. Once we hit the freight yards, it will slow down and we can get off. After that, I'll take you to the Hobo Jungle, and introduce you to some of the other bulls riding in this territory".

Suddenly, the weather changes to thunder and rain. Kay says "Now, we'll have to find a place for the night". Larry says "I wish I had stayed on the main highway, this road will turn into a mud hole in five minutes". Soon, their car is stuck in the mud. Kay says "Now, what?" Larry says "We stay here until the rain stops". After a few seconds, Larry says "What is that shining in the woods?" Kay says "It looks like a house". Larry says "We might as well take a chance. Come on honey, let's make a run for it". As they run toward the light, Larry says "It's a house all right!" Kay says "It looks like an old colonial mansion!" As they finally make it to the house, Larry says "What does that sign say?" Kay says "Ye Olde Sunnyside Inn". She then says "Look, there are horses over there, with strange looking saddles".

Ken says "Chris, did you hear the show Sunday? Chris says "I don't like to listen to the show". Ken says "Well, you missed a good one. I put some zip into that closing scene and I want you to hear it. I don't know, Chris, I don't make you come to rehearsals, and you don't have to sit in the control booth all day. The least you can do is listen to the show at home". Ken plays the show for Chris with the new ending. When its complete, Chris says "Why did you change it? What was wrong with the ending the way it was?" Ken says "Because it was wordy and repetitious. It didn't tell the story. Chris says "For two years now, I've turned out a murder a week for you, week in and week out. Every time I turn in a decent script, you chop the heart out of it". Ken says "Your contract's up next week, Chris. You've got only one more script to do. Now, write it and get out!" Chris says "You will get better than a script, you'll get everything you deserve. I'm going to show you what a real murder sounds like, even if I have to kill you to do it!"

Walking into the office, Steve Mitchell says "Good morning, Commissioner. Ruth said you wanted to see me". The Commissioner says "Steve, last night three men landed in Miami by plane. They were picked up in a limousine. The local police chased them, and the car crashed killing all three men". Steve asks "So, what's all this got to do with us, Commissioner?" He says "One of those men was a well-known foreign agent". Steve says "I see. How about the other two?" Commissioner says "A check was made on their identities, both of them". Steve says "Oh, you mean they were carrying phony identification papers?" Commissioner says "No, the papers were legitimate enough, but they didn't belong to the men who were carrying them. We believe those papers were stolen from U.S. citizens who are traveling abroad, and in each case those citizens were traveling alone and unattached". Steve says "I would bet that those U.S. citizens are dead right now". Commissioner says "Exactly, Steve it looks like we're up against a clever ambitious scheme to get foreign agents into the States. We have to work fast, as we don't know how many times they've pulled this trick so far, but we must keep them from continuing. Get down to Miami, Steve, and backtrack their operation until you find out who's behind it. Then, smash it once and for all".

Monday Jul 14, 2025
There is a killer at large in the city of Los Angeles, with no apparent motive or reason. The press dubbed him "The Sniper". He used a rifle to pick off his victims from dark alleys or upstairs windows or even automobiles. Five murders were credited to him without the police getting a clue as to his identity. Then, he started warning his victims, He'd make a phone call to someone and say, "You're next", and hang up. The police gave the warned victim protection, but the sniper knew that they could not assign a couple of cops to standing guard over a man forever. One day, while Chuck Morgan and his secretary, Carol Curtis, are discussing the day's events, the radio station phone rings. Carol answers it, and says "Chuck, its the sniper, and he wants to talk to you!" Chuck talks to him for a few seconds, then hangs up the phone. Carol asks "What did he say?" Chuck says "He only said two words...you're next".

Max says "When you look at me, you see a completely rehabilitated, practically a new man type of man. You see that, huh?" Danny says "The cure did you good, Max, you look fine". Max says "Look, I don't need compliments, I got trouble. This morning a no-good from way back came into here. You know what he wanted me to do? He said he's got pounds of the stuff" Danny says "Narcotics?" Max says "Yeah, on account of once in the dead past I was known as an addict of the stuff. He comes to me and wants me to distribute for him" Danny says "Who was he?" Max says "I don't remember his name". Just then, a customer comes in to Max's store. He says "Just a second, Danny". Max walks toward the customer and says "Is there something I can do for you?" The customer pulls out a pistol. Max yells "Danny, it's the no-good from way back!" The customer shoots Max, then starts firing toward Danny!

Saturday Jul 12, 2025
Nick and Patsy are driving home a girl whom had a little too much fun at a party. Nick asks "Where does she live, Patsy? She says "In the Greybar Apartments, Nick. It's the one with a big lily pool in the court". Nick says "Oh, that one. She would live in a place like that. All show and nothing else, just like Sally". Patsy says "I wish you wouldn't talk that way about her, Nick. She used to be one of my best friends years ago. She's just had a lot of trouble recently. She drinks to make herself forget her husband divorced her about a year ago, and she's been alone ever since". Nick says "It's funny you standing up for her Patsy, usually you'd be the first to condemn anyone who drinks and plays around the way she does". Patsy says "All right, Nick, think what you like, just as long as we get her home so I can put her to bed". Sally wakes up and says "Who's going to bed? The evening's young yet. Let's go somewhere". Nick says "The only place you're going, young lady, is home to bed". Nick pulls the car into the front entrance of her apartments. Patsy says "I'll get out to help her". Sally says "I can take care of myself". Sally takes a few steps and Patsy says "Oh I better go after her, she'll fall in the lily pool if she's not careful". Suddenly, Sally lets out a loud scream and says "There's a dead man in the pool!"

Ruth says "I warn you, I have a gun". He says "I don't want to harm you". She says "You've broken in here. Don't Move!" The man says "Oh, you really do have a gun. I think you're afraid. Why would a woman like you have a gun unless you were afraid?". She says "I tell you I'm not afraid". He says "That gun says you are, now give it to me". She says "You're an intruder here. Get out! Please get out! He says "No!". Suddenly, two shots are heard. Ruth picks up the phone and says "Operator, please connect me to the police headquarters.

While the North's are peacefully asleep in their Greenwich Village apartment, an older man named Lenny and a young one named Frankie are working feverishly in a warehouse on the East Side just before dawn. Frankie holds a flashlight, while Lenny applies a large metal bar to the hinges of a heavy black safe. He says "It's coming kid, she'll be popping open in a minute". Frankie says "Need any help? Lenny says "No, I can make it all by myself. There she goes". Frankie says "It won't take much longer will it?" Lenny says "Take it easy kid, you can't rush this kind of a job. Put some of those tools away if you want to keep your hands busy. I'll be through in about ten seconds". Frankie starts looking nervous. Lenny says "What's the matter, kid?" Frankie says "I thought I heard somebody coming. Lenny says "Quit being so jumpy, that was me". Frankie says "No it wasn't, it's the night watchman, he's coming". Lenny says "Wait, dowse the light. Get over by that door and smack him when he comes in". The night watchman says "Who is in there? Come on, answer me. If there is anybody in here I'm going to....oh!" Frankie knocks him out. Lenny says "Okay, kid, now we got to work fast".

After 20 years as a bank guard, George Blake, suddenly found himself arrested for complicity in a robbery. Inspector Caswell is continuing to question him at the police station. Blake says "What do you want me for now? I've told you all I know. Caswell says "You haven't told us anything that makes sense. Now you say you're innocent of having anything to do with a bank robbery. Blake says "That's right". Caswell says "Yet you were seen to level your pistol at one of the robbers at Point Blank Range without firing". Blake says "I told you my gun jammed". Caswell says "Blake, our armory examined that pistol of yours very closely. There's absolutely nothing wrong with it. It simply couldn't have jammed". Blake says "It did, I tell you". Caswell says "Were you afraid you might kill him? Was it the thought of killing another man that stopped you?" Blake says "I have nothing more to say". Caswell says "You shouldn't be ashamed of not wanting to shoot a man down. No decent person likes to do that. You've never been in that situation before, have you?" Blake says "I was a bank guard, it was my job to shoot if necessary". Caswell says "Exactly, so what stopped you? If it wasn't for fear of killing another man, then it must have been something else".

The man says "Yeah, what do you want?" Rocky says "Somebody wants to hire a chauffeur". The man says "A chauffeur? Take a look around this neighborhood, mister. Who do you think has money for a chauffeur? These people don't even have money for food". Rocky says "Look, all I know is the agency got a call for a chauffeur. The address is 159 Houston Street, sixth floor". The man says "I'm the janitor for this building. Look at how many floors are". Rocky says "Maybe they meant the fifth floor. I better go up". The man says "Go ahead, and let me know if you get the job". The janitor starts laughing. Rocky walks into the building and goes up four flights of stairs. He soon sees a guy who says "Hey Buddy, do you have change for a buck?" Rocky says "Sure, here you go". The guy takes the change. Rocky says "Hey, how about the buck?" I Was a Communist for the FBI - Rhapsody in Red
Thursday Jul 10, 2025
Thursday Jul 10, 2025
Matt Cvetic is a music lover, but only because the Communist Party says he is. Comrade Kafka has assigned him to love music. Kafka asks "Nervous Comrade Cvetic?" Matt says "No, just annoyed. I don't like this new assignment. Comrade Porcini may be a great violinist, but the last man in the world to care whether or not he is permitted to enter the United States is me". Kafka says "You care now, don't you comrade? Matt says "No". Kafka says "Yes, you do because you're a music lover, and all the other lovers of pure music here in America will refuse to let politics deprive you of Porcini's genius". Matt says "It won't work Kafka, Porcini was active as a communist in Europe. The American government will never approve his application for a visa". Kafka says "He's announced that he quit the party". Matt says "Do you think they'll believe that?" Kafka says "Perhaps, nevertheless this foolish government the Americans are so proud of is actually delusion. It can be twisted, bent, even broken by organized pressure. You, comrade, are to organize that pressure". Matt asks "How?" Kafka says "Cultural groups adore Porcini's music. You'll send out pamphlets, write letters, run advertisements, make speeches, hold rallies, all with one theme. Music knows no politics".

Philo Vance - The White Willow Murder Case
Thursday Jul 10, 2025
Thursday Jul 10, 2025
Mr. Stuart Ames, a stock market advisor, is in his office when one of his clients, Mr. Leroy, pays a visit. He says "I want to talk to you, Ames". Ames says "Oh, it's you Mr. Leroy. How are you?" Leroy says "I'll let you know in a little while, as soon as I close this door so we can have some privacy. Three months ago you urged me to buy 10,000 shares of White Willow Refineries". Ames says "I wouldn't say I urged you, I pointed out that the company was in good financial shape and had excellent possibilities. A merger was planned, and if it had gone through the shares would have been split, two for one". Leroy says "Yes, I know that's what you told me, but there was no merger and the stock is off 15 points from what I paid for it. You knew White Willow was a dog stock when you put me in it. I've lost 150,000, all the money I had in the world". Ames says "Oh, look here Mr. Leroy, you can't be blaming me for that". Leroy says "I mortgaged everything I own and went into debt to buy that stock. I'm broke Ames. If I sold that stock now, I couldn't get enough money to pay my debts". Ames says "I'm really sorry, Mr. Leroy, but there isn't anything I can possibly do about it". Leroy says "Well, there's something I can do about it. You don't think I'm going to take a loss like that lying down do you? Oh no, somebody's gonna take it lying down, but it won't be me".

The security at this entrance is in good shape". The Corporal says "Thank you sir". Taylor says "There's another sentry at the south gate isn't there? We'll see how alert he is when we come upon him from the rear". Suddenly, a muffled gunshot is heard. Taylor says "Nice work, Lieutenant. He is out like a light. Whitehall 1212 - The Case of Thomas Applebee
Tuesday Jul 08, 2025
Tuesday Jul 08, 2025
When Thomas Applebee married Alma Farnestock in Canada, he was 70 years old. Alma was 39. They had both been married before. Her first husband was dead and Thomas had divorced his first wife to marry the attractive middle-aged widow. The affair had been a nine-day scandal in their Canadian home. They had shortly moved to Bournemouth, near Southampton to start their new life. Thomas was described as a bitter old man who only paid attention to his money and his bottle. Alma was pretty and had no children. It seemed that half the men Bournemouth were in love with her. When Thomas Applebee died at the age of 75 of a broken skull, there was very little sympathy for him, but much for his wife Alma, until she spoke to a sergeant of the Bournemouth Police who had been summoned by Doctor Owen Trelawney, the attending physician. Alma told the sergeant "I did it. I tell you I did it. Tell the coroner I did. That's all i have to say". The sergeant says "Madam, do you know what you're saying in the presence of witnesses?" She said "Certainly, I know what I'm saying. I killed him. I hit him on his head with a mallet".

Mike says "I can't make it at 10:00. I have a sack full of habeas corpus writs to take to court this morning. The earliest I can make it would be at noon". Drake says "Alright, noon at the reservoir. Don't fail me Mike, and watch yourself". Jill asks "What does the District Attorney want to talk to you about Mike?" He says "Oh it’s probably about his upcoming election". Jill says "That wouldn't worry you. Mike, there are rumors about calling the Grand Jury into session. Is that why you've been so tense for the last three days?" Mike says "Yes, Jill, it's the talk about the Grand Jury." Jill says "The District Attorney wouldn't be meeting you secretly if it wasn't more than just...talk". Mike says "I'm afraid so". Jill asks "Why afraid, Mike? What do you have to fear from the Grand Jury?" Mike says "Nothing, from them". Jill says "Then, who?" Mike says "Jill, I've held off telling you this because I've always known how much you how very much you've hated my being a criminal lawyer. I have essentially become a mouthpiece for every petty grifter and mobster in this area. As a result, I know too much".

Hal says "There's not much I can do about it, is there?" She says "Would you mind if we left the door open just a little bit?" He says "Alright, what's your name?" She says "Myra Keats, don't look so hard, you've never met me before". He says "I wasn't exactly looking at your eyes, honey. Who sent you here?" Myra says "I work for the Lawless Detective Agency. The boss's name happens to be Sam Lawless". Hal says "All right, Myra, what's this all about?" She says "I want the diamonds you stole from Randy's Jewelry Store, a half million dollar's worth". Hal says "Look, I just finished a five year stretch, and I've been out for three weeks". There were only three fascist officials left in town and all of them were down in the village square hanging from a scaffold. Roberto had accomplished his task. He had been sent to Italy to help Guido Gordoni and his partisans wipe out fascists, but as he sat in the tavern that night with Rosa, Guido's sister, he was thinking about his home in Vermont. He had earned a few days furlough before his next assignment. After a while, Guido comes into the tavern. Roberto says "Well, where have you been Guido?" Guido says "I have been looking for the fat fascist pig, Alberto Pelizo". Roberto says "Pelizo, the big shipyard owner? Why would he be in Storza?" Guido says "He's got a summer villa just above town. I thought he might be hiding out there. I took some of the boys up but the place was empty. I've got to find him tonight". Roberto says "Why tonight?" Guido says "Roberto, didn't you notice? There's still room for one more on the scaffold in the square".

Faraday says "Yeah, now I'm going home to get a good night's sleep". Rawlings says "Hey, you sure earned it today, Inspector". Faraday says "Well, I guess it was the evidence we collected that's going to send Bill Thayer to prison. Yeah, we did a good job. I'm proud of the department". He says "Thanks Inspector". Faraday says "Good night Rawlings, I'll see you in the morning". He says "Hey Inspector, wait a minute, you aren't walking home are you?" Faraday says "Yeah, I think I will. The air will do me good". Rawlings says "Maybe so Inspector, but don't you think you'd better take a couple of the boys with you? Thayer said he'd have his pals take care of you, and you know what that means". Faraday says "If I worried about the threats I got from every guy I worked on I wouldn't have time to do my job". Rawlings says "But,Thayer's got a lot of friends". Faraday says "So what. His threat doesn't mean a thing, and neither does he. Good night".

However, by the end of this morning's breakfast, Gilbert would be contemplating murder. As he sat down at the table, he says "Good morning, Lavinia. Breakfast ready? I'm a bit late today, sorry". She says "Sit down Gilbert. I have something I need to tell you". He says "Would you pour me some tea, please?" She says "The tea can wait". He says "What's the matter with you, Lavinia? Are you upset?" She says "You'll find out why in just a moment, if you'll let me speak". He says "What's wrong, my dear?" She says "I'm leaving you. I'm going away and getting a divorce. When you return from work this afternoon, I shall be gone". Gilbert says "But why? What have I done? We've only been married three months. Lavinia, you said that you loved me". She says "I was wrong. I don't want to be melodramatic about this, but I'll be as honest as I can. When I married you, I thought this is what I wanted, a West End flat, a husband who adored me, and provided me with a fairly decent existence. However, I was mistaken. I want more than this, Gilbert. I've met another man who's very rich, and I'm going to marry him as soon as I get my divorce from you.

I've seen your name downstairs. You're a private eye, huh?" Marlowe says "That's right". Moose says "I'd like you to look for somebody". Marlowe says "I'm closing up. Come around tomorrow and we'll talk about it". Moose grabs Marlowe by the arm and says "I think we should do it now". Marlowe says "Let go of me you big ape". Moose says "I don't mean to do nothing. Here, I'll give you some dough. You come with me". Marlowe says "Okay, I'll come with you". Marlowe and Moose got into a cab, and arrived at a place called Florian's. Marlowe thought the place looked like trouble, but it didn't really matter to him because of the forty bucks Moose gave him. Moose says "They changed this place a lot. There used to be a stage and some booths, lattice work and pink flowers. The girl, she was cute like a bug's ear, a redhead. It's been eight years since I seen her, and for six years she didn't write, but she'll have a reason". Marlowe says "Yeah, she'll have a reason. What did she do here, sing?" Moose says "Yeah, let's you and me have a drink. Hey Jack, some whiskey". The bartender says "Hey Boss, he's here again".

Let George Do It - Nothing But the Truth
Thursday Jul 03, 2025
Thursday Jul 03, 2025
George Valentine receives a letter from a man calling himself Tioga Tom. He describes himself as the last honest man in the West. His letter reads "Have you ever heard of the castle I live in out by the desert? If so, you know what these railroad tickets are for. Come see me, but you don't know anything else, understand? The trouble with you fellows is that you jump on conclusions, and think nobody else is smart but you. If you think I need help, then you're crazier than the people in Texas Junction, and I ain't spit in their direction since the WPA. But, I do need a might of assistance regarding the arrest of a culprit. I'm a man everybody tries to pester on account of how rich they think I struck it, but me I like my privacy and I aim to maintain it. P.S. The culprit I make reference to is the one who stole or made disappear or killed my dog. The only botheration is, it was my seeing eye dog".

Well, it looks like you and Mr. Mortinoy got different books friend". Angelo says "I paid 500, more than 500 I paid". Nick says "So what about the interest, did you pay that too? Angelo says "No, I say what's on my mind! Mortinoy is nothing but a crook! I should've gone to a bank, or a legitimate loan company. I do nothing but pay and pay! There is no end to it! She says "You're not a part of this town, this street. I can trust you" He says "Well, I reckon you can ma'am. What you want I should do?" She says "Get a cab here for me and then ride with me to Union Terminal". He says "Well I'd be glad to but why?" She says "All I can tell you is some men are looking for me and if I'm found I may be killed".

Then, you suddenly decide that you have to come here this afternoon. Father, are you listening to me?" The Judge says "I've seen that man before". Barbara says "Which man do you mean?" Judge says "Barbara, come into this room quickly. I don't want him to see me. I'll pretend to look at this antique wooden box". Barbara says "But father, the sign there says do not touch. All these things are very valuable". Judge says "Never mind the sign. I'm going to look at this box, then I will have a little talk with the head of this museum, Miss Priscilla Ames. Yes, incidentally, this box is a work of art. Come and look at it, Barbara". Suddenly, a gunshot is heard. Barbara says "Oh good heavens, he is dead, he is dead!"

She says "Are you too big for fifty bucks?" Pat says "No. It must be a pretty geranium at those prices". She says "Some people love nature Mr. Novak. Go to the stand and tell them you want the plant, then take it straight to the address I gave you. It's important, don't let it out of your hands". Pat says "For fifty bucks, I'll act like we're married".

Marsha Winters, wife of wealthy banker Arnold Winters, is standing in front of the refrigerator in her large kitchen. As she opens the refrigerator door, she says to herself "This refrigerator needs defrosting again. Oh, my friends would laugh seeing me, of all people, the glamorous young wife of old moneybags Arnold Winters doing kitchen work". Emily, Marsha's sister-in-law, walks into the kitchen and says "Marsha, I came here for a showdown with you. I'm your husband's sister, and you are his wife". Marsha says "Oh, nothing for us to quarrel about there Emily, we are practically sisters". Emily says "Sisters? Forget that, we are both infatuated with the same man". Marsha says "What do you mean by that?" Emily says "You know what I mean Marsha. I am warning you to leave my fiancé Eric Stevenson alone!" Marsha says "All right, you asked for it. Eric Stevenson is not your man. He's mine. Mine, I tell you, and we have plans that don't take you into account" Emily says "You're married to my brother! I'll tell him the whole thing!" Marsha says "I can wrap him around my finger. He won't believe you!" Emily says "Listen Marsha, you will put Eric Stevenson out of your life or I'll kill you!"

Marlowe is in the middle of a strange dream, when his telephone rang. He picks it up. It is Dave Pryor, owner of the corner coffee shop. He says "Marlowe, this is Dave. Betty's gone. She's in trouble. You've got to help me, Marlowe. You've got to come over to my apartment, right away!" Marlowe says "Dave, it's one o'clock in the morning, and I'm in bed. You know I don't get in the middle of family quarrels". Dave says "It's not like that. Phil, believe me, I'm scared for her. Phil, please come over to the apartment. It's at 2000 Beechwood, It's a matter of life and death". Marlowe says "Okay, okay. I'll be there in ten minutes. When he arrives, Dave says "Marlowe, Marlowe, I thought you'd never get here. Look, somebody fired a shot through the door and when I got back with the aspirin, Betty was gone!" Marlowe says "All right, wait a minute, Dave. Hold it. I'm not even awake yet. Look, sit down. Take it from the top, slowly". Dave says "Yeah, okay. Maybe it started this morning at the coffee joint when a fancy guy came in and talked to Betty".

Lee Ryan is on the train from Chicago heading toward the West Coast. Feeling a little bored and impatient, he decided that the club car might help pass the time. Once there, Lee found a familiar face that he had known casually over a number of years, a talkative newspaper reporter who seemed to know many things about many people. The reporter says to Lee "You picked a good train. You can continue to follow my boy there, Jeff Larkin. I have to get off this train at the next stop, because, according to my newspaper, there's no story here". Lee says "Larkin? That name sounds familiar". Reporter says "Yeah, he looks that way too. He's sitting right over there with that girl". Lee says "Oh, she's not bad". Reporter says "Oh, she is just like all the rest, hanging around him thinking he's going to get that money". Lee says "What money?" Reporter says "Oh, you didn't recognize him. He's an ex-con now, but I knew him when he was a big man. He'd plan the robberies and his partner, Noisy Nevins, would pull them off. Their last job was a 100,000 dollar bank job. Larkin got careless, and he got five years". Lee asks "Who got the 100,000?" Reporter says "It disappeared, so did Nevins".
